Friday, the 15th of May, 1657.

Vassall's Claims.

Mr. Fowell reports from the Committee, to whom the Petition of Mr. Samuell Vassall was referred, the Resolutions of the said Committee.

The Question being put, That this House doth agree with the Committee, that the Sum of Two thousand Five hundred Ninety-one Pounds Seventeen Shillings Sixpence, due to Mr. Vassall, which was formerly placed by the Long Parliament upon the Excise, be placed there again, and the Interest due, and to be due, for the same; and the same to be paid and continued, until the said Two thousand Five hundred Niuety-one Pounds Seventeen Shillings and Six-pence be paid:

The House was divided.

The Yeas went forth.

Mr. Fowell, Tellers for the Yeas: 60.
Mr. Brisco, With the Yeas,
Colonel Clerk, Tellers for the Noes: 67.
Captain Baines, With the Noes,

So it passed in the Negative.

Resolved, That there is a Debt of Two thousand Five hundred Ninety-one Pounds Seventeen Shillings and Sixpence, due to Mr. Vassall from the Commonwealth.

Resolved, That it be presented to his Highness, as the Desire of the Parliament, that Care be taken for the speedy Payment of this Sum of Money, with the Use thereof, to Mr. Vassall.

Resolved, That the Debate upon the Residue of this Report be adjourned till this Day Sevennight.

Resolved, That the Lord Lambert, and the Lord Strickland, be desired to present the former Vote, concerning Mr. Vassall to his Highness.

Grant to Bastwick.

Resolved, That the Bill, on Behalf of Mrs. Bastwick, be read the Second time on Tuesday next.

Protector's Answer.

The House, according to former Order, resumed the Debate upon the Answer of his Highness the Lord Protector to the Petition and Advice.

Resolved, That this Debate be adjourned till Tuesday Morning, at Eight of the Clock; and nothing to intervene.

Resolved, That Committees have Leave to sit in the mean time, notwithstanding the Adjournment of the House.

Resolved, That the House be adjourned till Tuesday Morning, Eight of the Clock.

And the House adjourned itself accordingly.
