Monday, the 8th of August, 1653.

Stowell's Estate.

COLONEL Rous reports from the Committee for Petitions, The humble Petition of several Purchasers of the late Estate of Sir John Stowell, on the Behalf of themselves, and other Purchasers of the same Estate; and the several Votes of Parliament of the 24th of February 1652: Which were now read.

Resolved, That this Business be taken into Consideration on Friday next.

Comm ro for Articles.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee for Petions, to take Care that there be good Council for the Commonwealth to attend the Commissioners for Articles.

Irish Army Arrears.

Colonel Cromwell reports from the Committee for the Affairs of Ireland, A Bill, intituled, An Additional Act for stating and determining the Accounts of the Officers and Soldiers of the Army in Ireland: Which was this Day read the First and Second time.

And the Question being put, For ingrossing the same;

It passed in the Negative.

And the Act was, upon the Question, passed: And ordered to be printed and published.

Naval Rewards- Victory over Dutch.

Mr. Moyer reports from the Council of State,

THAT it be humbly reported to the Parliament, from this Council, that Two Gold Chains, to the Value of Three hundred Pounds apiece, may be made and given to General Blake and General Monck, as a Mark of Favour from the Parliament, and a Token of their good Acceptance of the eminent Services performed by them against the Dutch:

And that a Chain, to the Value of One hundred Pounds, may be made and given to Vice-Admiral Penn; and one of the same Value to Rear-Admiral Lawson; upon the same Consideration:

That it be also humbly presented to the Parliament, That the Four Flag-Officers have Chains given them, of Forty Pounds a piece: And that, if the Parliament shall so please, the former Sum of Nine hundred and Sixty Pounds be made up Two thousand Pounds, to be given in Medals amongst the Officers of the Fleet, as a Mark of the Parliament's Favour, and good Acceptance of their Service, in such manner as the Commissioners of the Admiralty, by Advice with the Generals of the Fleet, shall think fit.

Recruiting Army.

Mr. Strickland reports from the Council of State,

THAT it be humbly reported to the Parliament, that in regard of the pressing Occasions for the sending of Land Soldiers to the Service of the Fleet, that the Regiments of Sir Wm. Constables, Colonel Ingoldsby, Colonel Goff, and Colonel Pryde, may be recruited to the Number of One thousand Men in each Regiment; and that they may be so continued for the Space of Three Months.

Resolved, That this House doth concur with the Council of State therein.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of the Army, and that they be authorized, to take the said Recruits of these several Regiments into the Establishment; and to take Care for the Payment of them for Three Months, accordingly.

Registering Marriages.

Colonel Blunt reports from the Committee of the Law, A Bill touching Marriages, and the Registering thereof; and also of Births and Burials: Which was this Day read the First and Second time: And, upon the Question, committed to a Grand Committee.

Resolved, That the House be resolved into a Grand Committee To-morrow Morning at Eight of the Clock, to sit upon this Bill.

Naval Rewards.

Ordered, That the Resolutions of this House this Day, be communicated to the Generals, and other Officers of the Navy, by the Commissioners for ordering and managing the Affairs of the Admiralty and Navy.

Lenthall's Petition.

The humble Petition of Sir John Lenthall Knight, was this Day read.

Resolved, That the Committee for Prison and Prisoners have Power to commit any Person who shall not attend them, being sent for by their Order; the said Committee forthwith, upon such Commitment, acquainting the House therewith.

Army Arrears.

Colonel Clerk reports from the Committee of the Army:

THE said Committee, finding, That several Officers and Soldiers, who served in the late Wars in Scotland, before the 20th of October 1651, are not satisfied their Arrears due unto them for that Service, do therefore humbly offer to the Consideration of the Parliament, if they think fit, that the present Committee for the Army may be authorized and directed to proceed in the Satisfaction of the Remainder of the said Arrears, and making Allowance to the several Persons yet unsatisfied the same, out of the Monies appointed for that Use, according to the Agreement made between the late Committee for the Army, and the Officers of the Army, and the several Rules and Directions in that Behalf given by the late Parliament: And that the said present Committee for the Army may be also impowered to recover and defalk, and cause to be repaid to Sir John Wollaston Knight, and the rest of the Treasurers at War, all such Sums of Money, as, upon Examination of the Accompts of Monies paid to any Persons for and . . lieu of the said Arrears, either for themselves, or for any other, for whom they were intrusted or appointed to receive such Monies, shall appear to have been paid unto them over and above the Proportions and Sums of Money, which they ought to have received for or in lieu of those Arrears: And that the Warrants and Orders of the said Committee for the Army, to all or any the Purposes aforesaid, may be, by the said Treasurers at War, and all others, observed and obeyed, accordingly.

Thanksgiving Day.

Resolved, That a Day be set apart for a solemn Thanksgiving to Almighty God, for his great Mercy in the late Successes vouchsafed unto the Navy of this Commonwealth against the Dutch: And that Declaration be prepared to invite the People of God in this Nation, to join in the Observation thereof.

Resolved, Thursday Fortnight, being the 25th Day of August instant, shall be the Day.

Resolved, That the Parliament do, on that Day, meet in Margarett's Church Westminster, for the Purpose aforesaid.

Resolved, That there be Two Persons desired to perform the Exercise of that Day.

Resolved, That Mr. Cradock, and Mr. Owen, be desired to perform the publick Exercises of that Day of Thanksgiving, at the Place aforesaid.

Ordered, That Colonel Cromwell do give Doctor Owen Notice thereof.

Ordered, That Captain Howard do give Mr. Cradock Notice thereof.

Resolved, That Mr. Sadler, Colonel Sidenham, and Sir Charles Wolseley, do prepare a Declaration to be published for that Purpose; and report the same to the House.

Resolved, That Mr. Cradock shall have Liberty to preach in Margarett's Church every Lord's Day in the Forenoon; and that he be desired to preach there, accordingly.
