MIDDLESEX. Inq. taken at Stratford on Saturday the feast of St. James, 23 Edward III.
[Stebenhithe.] A capital messuage, 15a. arable, 5a. meadow and 3s. 4d. rent held of the bishop of London, service not specified.
He died on Saturday the eve of Whitsunday last. Margaret, countess of Kent, his sister, aged 40 years and more, is his heir.

BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Stivyngton, Saturday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 23 Edward III.
Stivyngton. The manor (full extent given) held of the king in chief by service of two knights’ fees. The extent includes a fulling mill which stands vacant through the pestilence, 12a. wood called Sarlefryth, 4a. wood called Wodecroft, an enclosed park, a plot of several pasture in Pabenhammor, 6a. meadow and a water-mill at Pabenham, 29l. 16 1/2d. rent of free tenants and bondmen at Stivyngton and Pabenham, 6s. 8d. yearly farm of a fishery from a holm (aque de uno holmo) and 13s. 4d. payable to the king on le Hokeday for view.
He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick.
He died on 31 May, 23 Edward III. Heir as above.
Endorsed with the names of the attorneys appointed by Blanche, late the wife of the said Thomas, to receive her dower.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Carlisle, 18 June, 23 Edward III.
Lydell. The castle and manor (extent given), including a fishery in the river Esk, held jointly with Blanche his wife, who survives, to them and the heirs of the said Thomas, by the king’s licence granted in 19 Edward II, of the king in chief by homage and fealty and by service of rendering yearly at the exchequer of Carlisle 56s. for cornage and by suit at the county of Cumberland every month.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

Merton. The manor (extent given), including a farm called ‘Brustergild’ rendering 3s. yearly, held jointly as above by licence granted in 19 Edward II, of the king in chief as of the lands late of Robert de Clyfford, in the king’s hand by reason of the minority of the said Robert’s heir, by homage and fealty and by service of rendering yearly at the castle of Appelby 8s. 6d. for cornage.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

Two parts of the manor held of the king in chief by homage and fealty only; and the third part held of the abbot of Peterborough by service of 2s. yearly (extent given), including the fishery of the moat (fossati), 163a. meadow in Crannemore and other parcels, a fishery in the (in ripa de) Weland, a profit of pasture for strangers’ (extraneorum) cattle on the marsh of Depyng worth 10l. yearly, a profit of selling turf and a profit of cheminage over Catebrigge and before the gates of the priory of Depyng.

YORK. Inq. taken at Kirkeby Moresheved, Wednesday after SS. Peter and Paul, 23 Edward III.
John Wake, his father, was sometime seised of the manors of Cotyngham, Wyveton, Kirkeby Moresheved, Aton and Hemelyngton; which he surrendered into the hands of King Edward I with all the liberties, fees, advowsons of churches &c. thereto belonging, together with the reversions of the manor of Buttercrambe, which Walter bishop of Coventry and Lichfield held for his life by the demise of the said John, and of the manors of Middelton and Cropton which Letitia Wake held in dower of the inheritance of the said John. And the said king granted the aforesaid manors and reversions to the said John and Joan, his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John, by charter dated 5 January, 27 Edward I.
Kirkeby Moresheved. The manor (full extent given) including ruinous houses, an orchard called ‘le Orteyerd,’ a park with deer with pasturage in divers places called ‘les Hagges,’ pastures called ‘le Hallecote’ and ‘le Snapcote,’ meadow in places called ‘le Westeng,’ Stokeng, Alduswra, Apeltreflat, Roundacre, Bulfordsty, Southflat in ‘le Silkeng’ and Northflat in ‘le Silkeng,’ Holker, ‘le Silkenghede,’ Mosyheved and Scareheved, Slogheved and Atte Brockedwyth, le Tunge, Kichynbusk and Gillyngmoreleyes, a pasture called ‘les Scues,’ a market every Wednesday, a yearly fair, water-mills at Farndale, Gillyngmore and Brauncedale, and rent of free tenants at Fadmore. The manor is charged time out of mind by the ancestors of the said Thomas Wake with 26s. 8d. yearly to the prioress and convent of Keldholm, and with tithe of the water-mill, worth 13s. 4d. yearly, to the vicar of the church of Kirkeby. The manor and its members of Farndale, Gillyngmore, Brauncedale and Fadmore are held of Sir John de Moubray by homage and fealty and by service of a knight’s fee and a half.
Cropton and Middelton. The manors together with certain tenements in Hartoft pertaining thereto (extents given), including meadows in ‘le Southeng,’ ‘le Northeng’ and Lenedyeng, are held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. The manor of Cropton is charged, time out of mind, by the ancestors of the said Thomas Wake with 21s. 8d. yearly to the earl of Lancaster and his heirs, to be paid at the castle of Pikeryng for wapentake fines and with 100s. yearly to the abbot of Byland (Bella Landa); and ten tofts and ten bovates of land in the manor of Middelton are similarly charged with 100s. yearly to Henry de Boys and his heirs.
Aton. The manor (extent give), including pastures called ‘Coull’ and ‘le Holmes’ and little woods called ‘Clyverigg’ and ‘le Burgh,’ whereof the capital messuage and 14 bovates of land are held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee; and the residue of the manor is held of John Darcy, as of the right of his wife, daughter and heir of Nicholas de Menyl, by knight’s service and by rendering to the said John and his wife for wapentake fines 3s. yearly.
Hemelyngton [or Emelyngton]. The manor (extent given), including a ruinous messuage and the herbage of ‘le Moryleyes,’ is held of Ralph de Nevill by knight’s service.
The said John Wake and Joan his wife, Walter, bishop of Coventry, and Letitia died long ago.
The said Thomas held no other manors, lands &c. in the county except the manors of Cotyngham, Wyveton, Buttercrambe and Langeton, with their members and appurtenances, which are not extended here because the jurors have no knowledge of the value of them.

YORK. Inq. taken at Cotyngham, Monday the octave of SS. Peter and Paul, 23 Edward III (much defaced).
He held to himself and the heirs of his body the manors of Cotyngham, Wyveton and Buttercrambe, with their members and appurtenances, in the form contained in the preceding inquisition, viz.:—
Cotyngham. The manor (extent given), including a ruinous capital messuage, lands, rents &c. … worth 8l. 6s. 8d. and not more on account of the pestilence, a park with deer and a ferry at Stonferry …
Wyveton. The manor (extent given) (illegible).
Buttercrambe. The manor (extent given) (illegible).
Langeton. He was sometime seised of the manor of Langeton (extent given), which by his charter he granted to Henry de Lancastre, earl of Leicester, Stephen de Swynnerton and Henry Pycot, together with the knights’ fees, advowsons of churches &c. thereto belonging; who granted the same to the said Thomas and Blanche his wife and the heirs of Thomas; and Blanche continued her estate therein until Thomas’s death, and still survives. The manor is held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a knight’s fee.
The manors of Cotyngham with its members and Wyveton are held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a barony and finding a mounted esquire, fitly armed, to carry the king’s hauberk (loricam) in the Welsh war at his own charges for forty days if there should be war in Wales.
The manor of Buttercrambe, with its member of Scrayngham and other appurtenances, is held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a knight’s fee.
He held no other lands &c. in the county, except the manors of Kirkeby Moresheved, Cropton and Middelton, Aton and Hemelyngton, with their members, which are not extended here because the jurors have no knowledge of the value of them.

SUSSEX. Inq. (fn. 3) made at Woppyngthorn, 18 March, 23 Edward III.
Chyntynge by Seford. A capital messuage, 50a. arable, two tenants in bondage, rendering 13s. 3d. yearly whose works are worth 3s., and a court worth 12d. yearly held for life of the right of Joan his wife, deceased, of the king in chief by service of finding two parts of a hobelar in Wales for 40 days at his own costs.
Neal (Nigellus) Bouet, son of the said William and Joan, aged 20 years fourteen days before the Purification last, is heir of William and Joan.
Combes. 14a. arable and 11a. marsh held by the law of England of the inheritance of the aforesaid Joan of John de Moubray as parcel of the manor of Aplesham.
Neal Bouet is his heir.
Horsham. Tenements called Notham, viz. a capital messuage, 150a. sterile arable on the Weald, 40s. rents and a court worth 12d. yearly in the parish of Horsham, similarly held of the same John by knight’s service, amount not known.

Stenyngg. A messuage and two carucates of land held for life of the gift of Richard Fesour, chaplain, and William son of William Lychepole, by a fine in the king’s court, with remainder to Neal his son and Margaret his wife and the heirs of their bodies, held of John de Mombray by service of a knight’s fee.
Sele. A messuage, 180a. land, 10a. meadow and 50a. wood, whereof the said William Bouet and Joan his wife held jointly of the gift of Richard le Fesour to them for their lives, with remainder as above. These tenements are parcel of the tenements in Woppyngthorn in Stenyngg and are held of John de Mombray by service as above as parcel of Woppyngthorn (sic. No previous mention of Woppyngthorn).
She held no other lands in the county.
