  • 2. John Islip, abbot of Westminster 1500–32, when he died. He was born on 10 June 1464, entered the religious life 21 March 1480; first mass in the year Michaelmas 1485–6; prior 1498–1500 (Pearce, pp 167–8). See also DNB.
  • 3. Among deaths for 1497 (361). John Barker was admitted as a monk of Westminster Abbey in the year Michaelmas 1479–80; first mass 1487–8; died in 1495–6 (Pearce, p 168). Barbara Harvey has calculated that the date of his death occurred in the calendar year 1496 owing to the time he spent in the monastic infirmary (Westminster Abbey Muniments 19474) and his entry on BR indicates that he died on or after Ascension Day (12 May) in that year.

  • 5. Parish clerk of St Giles Cripplegate; junior master 1507 (457) and senior master 1519 (590). There are two earlier individuals named John Lincoln on BR, one of whom was a 'subclerk' (?to his father) when admitted in 1461 (64).
  • 6. Among deaths for 1516 (568). A Henry Woodcock (Wodecok), citizen and writer of court hand, left a will of 8 January 1515, proved 22 February 1516 requesting burial in the church of St Benet Sherehog if he died in London (PROB 11/18, f. 102r).
  • 7. Among deaths for 1500 (386). Probably the Richard Hayward (Hewarde), citizen and barber, who requested burial at St Mary Woolnoth where he was lately a parishioner by his will of 30 March, proved 16 June, 1500 (PROB 11/12, f. 45v). His late wife Elizabeth is mentioned as having been buried there and an Elizabeth Hayward is noted among both admissions and deaths for 1494 (337, 338).
  • 8. Thomas Eyre, who requested burial in the churchyard of St Stephen's Coleman Street, left a ring with the image of the Trinity carved on it to the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 9 June, proved 9 July, 1493 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 56r).
  • 9. Marmaduke Huby, abbot of Fountains, is attested there in 1494 and 1516 (VCH Yorkshire, III, 138).
  • 10. Presumably the Henry Hudson who was vicar of St Dunstan in the West 1492–7, when he died (Hennessy, p 137). Probate of his will was granted 27 April 1497 (Guildhall MS 9168/1, ff. 30v, 37v).

  • 12. Among deaths for 1516 (565). Richard Dodd asked to be buried in the porch of St Lawrence Jewry. He left a copy of St Bonaventura's work De Vita Christi and 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 28 November, proved 13/14 December, 1515 (Darlington, London Consistory Court Wills, 22).
  • 13. Among deaths for 1514 (514). Wilcox was a chantry priest of St Mary Woolnoth where he requested burial in the south aisle by his will of 14 February, proved 31 March, 1514 (Guildhall MS 9531/9, f. 208v).
  • 14. Probably the Thomas Ely, monk of Westminster Abbey, who celebrated his first mass there in the year Michaelmas 1478–9 and died in 1503–4 (Pearce, p 164) although his death is not recorded on BR.
  • 15. Perhaps the Thomas Spicer who was parish clerk of St Antholin on 27 December 1517 when he appears as a witness to the will of Robert Dowse, priest of that church (Darlington, London Consistory Court Wills, 52).
  • 16. John Law was parish clerk of St Mary at Hill and junior master in 1508 (469); he appears among the deaths for 1514 (547). Law is noted in the churchwardens' accounts of the above church from 1501–10 (Baillie, Biographical Notes).

A Helen Maxe was admitted with William below (344).
  • 24. Among deaths (as Jacnett) for 1506 (454). Presumably the Thomas Jakenet, citizen and grocer, who requested burial in the church of St Benet Sherehog by his will of 22 February, proved 6 April, 1506 (PROB 11/15, f 39r). His wife Margaret is mentioned there and a Margaret Jakenet (Iakonet) was admitted with Thomas in 1495 below (344).
  • 25. Among deaths for 1520 (610). Presumably the Robert Penson, citizen and skinner, who requested burial in the north aisle of St Stephen Walbrook where his late wife Winifred was buried by his will of 10 October 1519, proved 23 February 1520 (PROB 11/19, f. 201r). Winifred is an uncommon Christian name in London at this time and a Winifred Penson is among admissions for 1496 (353) and deaths for 1505 (443).

Presumably this or the other John Harris entered below is the parish clerk of St Mary Aldermanbury who requested burial in the churchyard there with his late wife and children by his will of 25 March, proved 5 July, 1494 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 76v). He is most probably the parish clerk among admissions for 1477 (142), rather than the master for 1454. The current wife and executrix of the Aldermanbury clerk, Emmott, is mentioned in his will and an Emmott Harris is among the clerks' wives admitted in 1495 (342).
  • 33. The reference here to the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist (24 June) relates to the election of the sheriffs on this day. They are the sheriffs whose year of office had begun on 24 June 1495.
  • 34. Probably the Edward Kirby, canon of St Bartholomew's Priory Smithfield, who proceeded acolyte, subdeacon and deacon in 1491–2 and was ordained priest on 19 December 1495, when he is incorrectly named as Edmund (Davis, 10669).
  • 35. Among deaths for 1506 (452). Appleby was rector of St John the Baptist Walbrook 1487–1505, when he died (Hennessy, p 304). He was admitted to the Skinners' Corpus Christi fraternity, which held its services there, in 1488 (Guildhall MS 31693, ff. 16v, 18r).
  • 36. Among deaths for 1499 (375). A Dominus Thomas Sellers (Selaris) of All Hallows Barking died on 20 August 1498 (Guildhall MS 9168/1, f. 81v).
  • 37. Among deaths for 1516 (565). Robert Everard was vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields 1487–1516, when he died (Hennessy, p 294).
  • 38. Presumably the William Hunt who was parish clerk of St Alphage London Wall and junior master in 1496 (482); among deaths for 1514 (547).
  • 39. There are a number of references to an individual or individuals named William Dobney around this time. One was parish clerk of St Dunstan in the East in the years 1498–1500 and is noted in the churchwardens' accounts there (Baillie, Biographical Notes). There was also a gentleman of the Chapel Royal of this name by 1509 who was still in post at Michaelmas 1525, being present at the Field of Cloth of Gold in 1520 (Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians). While it is possible that they are the same individual, as Baillie supposes, it is more likely that they are distinct.
  • 40. Kisby, Royal Household Chapel, Appendix 1, identifies him with the John Fisher who was a gentleman of the Chapel Royal between 1503 and 1547, whose will was dated March 1547 (Calendar of Patent Rolls 1548–1549, pp 171–2) but the name is common and this can be no more than a possibility.
  • 41. Among deaths for 1502 (410). A Thomas Bromfield (Bromfeld), citizen, requested burial before the morrow mass altar in St Dunstan in the West by his will of 26 July 1500, proved 22 June 1502 (PROB 11/13, f. 104r). The senior master for 1496 was parish clerk of St Dunstan in the West and may have attracted members to the fraternity from his own parish since the number of admissions for this year is large. See Christie p 42 on occasions when high numbers of admissions may be linked to such 'parochial' recruitment.
  • 42. Death not recorded on BR. Possibly the Thomas Brooke (Broke) the elder, citizen and draper, who requested burial in the church of St Michael Comhill and mentioned his wife Alice in his will of 29 September, proved 14 October, 1525 (PROB 11/21, f. 292r). An Alice Brooke (Broke) was admitted below (353).
  • 43. Possibly Richard Pynson the printer, who requested burial in the churchyard of St Clement Danes next to his late wife and established a chantry within St Dunstan in the West for a year after his death by his will of 18 November 1529, proved 18 February 1530 (PROB 11/23, f. 118r). Another possible 'parochial' recruit by the senior master for this year as parish clerk of St Dunstan. A Joan Pynson was admitted with Richard below (353).

  • 48. Perhaps the John Smith, parish clerk of London, with lands at Chipping Lambourn, Berks. He was a recently arrived parishioner of St Faith 'where I am nowe parish- ioner.' His wife Annabel is named in his will of 7 February, proved 10 February, 1496 (PROB 11/10, f. 234v).
