By his will of 28 January, proved 5 March, 1518, Andrew Tenwinter requested burial within St Anne's chapel at St Bride's where he established a chantry for himself and other members of his family for seven years (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 74r). His wife Margaret, mentioned there, is among deaths for 1520 (611).
  • 2. Among deaths for 1514 (547). Apparently the Thomas Smith (Smyth) of St Andrew Undershaft whose will was exhibited on 5 June 1513 when his widow Agnes was granted administration (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 86v).
  • 3. Anchorite.
  • 4. Death not recorded on BR. Perhaps the John Cross MA, of Lancashire, who was a fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford 1482–5 and rector of St Nicholas Shambles 1489–1517. He was dead by July in the latter year (Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 5. A William Hale was a chorister at St George's Chapel Windsor between 29 July 1474 and 23 August 1479 and is recorded there on the treasurer's roll (xv, 34.55) and in the attendance book (v.B.2). See Roger Bowers' list of Windsor personnel deposited at St George's Chapel Archives, Windsor.
  • 6. Parish clerk of St Andrew Hubbard and senior master in 1512 (520). He appears in the churchwardens' accounts there from 1506–12. Baillie, Biographical Notes, identifies him with the Robert Collins who was parish clerk of St Margaret Pattens in 1518–9 but this is far from certain.
  • 7. Probably the Leonard Patrick who was an occasional musical performer at St Mary at Hill as the name is uncommon. He is noted in the churchwardens' accounts there for 1496–7 and 1500–1. See Baillie. Biographical Notes.
  • 8. Among deaths for 1500 (386). Probably the William Redy, citizen and mercer, of St Antholin, who requested burial close to his father's grave at St Leonard Shoreditch by his will of 15 March [1500], proved [1500] (PROB 11/12, f. 63v). His wife is named there as Elizabeth and an Elizabeth Redy is among admissions below (307).
  • 9. Death not recorded on BR. This Robert Lytton might be either (i) the Sir Robert Lytton of Knebworth, Herts, who also held property in London, and in whose will of 11 April, proved 25 July, 1505, he requested burial in the church of the Black- friars at Ludgate (PROB 11/14, f 274r) or (ii) the Robert Lytton, gentleman, who requested burial in the church or churchyard of St Andrew, Holborn by his will of 19 October 1510, proved 30 January 1511 (PROB 11/16, f. 276r).
  • 10. Among deaths for 1502 (410). Probably the John Templeman, citizen and salter, of St Nicholas Shambles, whose will of 15 June, was proved 9 July, 1501 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 245r). His wife Margaret is mentioned there and a Margaret Templeman was admitted with John below (307).
  • 11. Among deaths for 1491 (314). Perhaps the Thomas Holt who requested burial in the church of St Andrew Undershaft. Only the probate of his will is recorded on 2 August 1490 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 6r) which mentions his wife Agnes. An Agnes Holt was admitted with Thomas below (307).
  • 12. Among deaths (as David Chapman) for 1504 (431). Perhaps the citizen and leath- erseller of this name who requested burial in the church of St Olave, Southwark 'ny unto the place ther wher I am wont to sit' by his will of 11 February, proved 19 February, 1504 (PROB 11/14, f. 21r). This mentions his wife Alice and an Alice Chapman is among admissions for 1487 and deaths for 1504 (281, 432).
  • 13. Among deaths for 1493 (431). Lawrence Giles (Gilys/Gilis), parishioner of St Botolph Aldgate and 'beerbrewer', requested burial in the church of Holy Trinity, Minories and left 6s 8d for the support of the parish clerks' fraternity if members prayed for his soul and attended his obsequies (PROB 11/9, f. 91v).
  • 14. Among deaths for 1520 (611). Wife of Andrew Tenwinter, master (303). After acting as an executor of his will in 1518, she herself requested burial in the church- yard of St Bride by her will of 21 April, proved 8 May, 1520 (Guildhall MS 9171 9, f. 149v).

  • 18. A John Merrick (Meryk), citizen and tallowchandler, of St Thomas the Martyr Southwark, left a will of 8 November, proved 6 December, 1489 (PROB 11/8, f. 237r).

  • 20. Henry Medwall of Southwark, born on or about 8 September 1461, King's scholar at Eton, where he was admitted in 1475, vacating to become scholar of King's College Cambridge 1480–3; BCL 1491–2. Although listed among the priests and a chaplain and notary to Cardinal Morton, Archbishop of Canterbury, he never proceeded beyond the diaconate to which he was ordained on 18 September 1490. He held the sinecure rectory of Balinghem, Pale of Calais, 1492–1501. See Emden, BRUC to 1500 and AH Nelson The Plays of Henry Medwall (1980). He is claimed as the author of the first secular plays in England, performed in the Great Hall at Lambeth Palace. Son of John Medwall, parish clerk of St Margaret Southwark (16) whose death is recorded below (314).
  • 21. Admitted with Joan Bullsdon (312). A Thomas Bullsdon, recently deceased, of St Botolph Aldgate and his widow Joan are recorded in 1513 (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 100v).
  • 22. Among deaths for 1505 (442). Probably the John Bramston who requested burial in the chapel of St John the Baptist within St Mary Matfellon by his will of 1 September, proved 27 September, 1504 (PROB 11/14, f. 133v). His wife Joan is mentioned there and a Joan Bramston is among admissions for 1493 (330) and deaths for 1505 (443), if the name 'Bramstoio' under the latter is a scribal error for Bramston.

  • 24. This group of three names consists of parish or choir clerks.
  • 25. Christian name omitted.
  • 26. A mercer, son of William Cantelowe, Kt and alderman (Beaven, II, 9; Thrupp, p 328). He requested burial with his father in the church of St Mary Magdalen Milk Street and bequeathed 13s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 5 November, proved 20 December, 1490 (PROB 11/8, f. 210v).
  • 27. Presumably the William Mane, monk of Westminster Abbey (first mass in the year Michaelmas 1481–2, treasurer 1488–92, prior 1501–28) who died on 4 May 1528 (Pearce, p 166).

  • 29. A Thomas Clerk is noted at St Andrew Hubbard in 1504 (Mc Murray, Index) but 'clerk' may be used as a descriptive term rather than as a surname in the church- wardens' accounts for the parish.

  • 31. Among deaths for 1496 (354). A John Hanson, baker, of St Martin in the Fields, left a will of 22 October 1492, proved 7 October 1495 (PROB 11/10, f. 203r).
  • 32. Among deaths (as Magister Stowell) for 1506 (454). John Stowell was master of the Windsor stonemasons 1452–61, mason at Westminster Abbey from 1468 and King's master mason from 1483. He audited the accounts of St Margaret Westmin- ster as 'Master Robert Stowell Esquyer' in 1490, 1492 and 1504 and was a warden of the Assumption guild in Westminster. Administration of his will of 13 November, was granted to his widow Joan on 28 November, 1505 (Westminster City Archives: Peculiar Court of West- minster, Register Wyks f. 21r).
  • 33. Among deaths for 1502 (410). A John Hebson (Ebson), parishioner of St Margaret Southwark, requested burial in the church of the Greyfriars, London by his will of 18 April, proved 25 April, 1502 (PROB 11/13, f. 76v).
  • 34. Among deaths for 1519 (600). Probably the Thomas Blissett of St Stephen Coleman Street, who requested burial in the parish charnel before the image of the resurrection. He left a will of 29 December 1518, proved 14 January 1519 (Guild- hall MS 9171/9, f. 105v). His wife Joan is named there and a Joan Blissett was admitted below (321).

  • 36. Robert Billesdon, Kt, alderman 1471–92, mayor 1483, knighted 1485 and died 1492 (Beaven, II, 14). He was the son of Alexander Billesdon, of Queniborough, Leics (Thrupp, p 324). By his will of 20 June 1491, proved 1492, he requested burial in the chancel of St Augustine Watling Street and left 13s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul (PROB 11/9, f. 228r).
  • 37. Probably the Joan Snodenham, wife of Richard Snodenham, citizen and barber, and relict of William Chapman and John Jacob of West Ham, Essex, who requested burial in the churchyard of St Botolph Aldersgate by her will of 25 June, proved 16 September, 1491 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 24v).
  • 38. Among deaths for 1501 (393). A Master William Wheatley (Whetley) was collated as prebendary of Pancratius in St Paul's on 1 June 1494 (Fasti, p 55).
  • 39. Among deaths for 1510 (504). John Chauntrell BD, BCnL, was rector of St Peter Cheap 1492–1509, but was dead by November 1509 (Emden, BRUC to 1500). By his will of 18 July 1509, proved 20 January 1510, he requested burial in St Paul's churchyard and left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity (PROB 11/16, f. 182r).
  • 40. Probably the William Brewood who was a monk of Westminster Abbey where he was admitted in the year Michaelmas 1465–6, cellarer 1484–96, 1500–1, treas- urer 1499–1501 and died 1514–5 (Pearce, p 160), but his death is not recorded on BR.
  • 41. Perhaps the John Ashley, monk of Westminster Abbey, where he was admitted in the year Michaelmas 1482–3 and died in 1522–3 (Pearce, p 169).
  • 42. John Reculver, prior of St Mary Overy, Southwark from August 1491 until he died or resigned in 1499. See M Carlin, Medieval Southwark (1996), p 286.
  • 43. A Richard Conway was a gentleman of Lady Margaret Beaufort's chapel in 1503–4 (Kisby, Royal Household Chapel, Appendix 5).
  • 44. A Robert Mitchelson (Mychelson) is noted as a lay clerk at St George's Windsor from 21 December 1492 until Michaelmas 1504 (St George's Chapel Windsor Archives: treasurer's rolls xv.34.66 and 71; Bodleian Library MS Berkshire Rolls 4 and 5). Compositions by him appear in the Eton choir book. The name is not uncommon however. The will of a Robert Mitchelson (Michelson) of St Peter le Poer was renounced in 1509 (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f.11r).
  • 45. Junior master in 1510, when he was parish clerk of St Peter Cornhill (496), although apparently resident in the neighbouring parish of St Martin Outwich where he is noted in the churchwardens' accounts as a debtor from 1509–12. By 1534 Ody was a vicar choral of St Paul's and had acquired some distinction as a church musician. His will of 28 October 1537, proved 6 February [1538] (Guildhall MS 25626/1, f. 6v) mentions his wife Joan who was admitted when he was master (500). See Baillie, Biographical Notes.
  • 46. Hugh Mitton (Myton), parish clerk of St Michael Comhill, junior master in 1502 (398) and senior master in 1509 (482). Among deaths for 1512 (526).
  • 47. It is not clear what distinguished these 'contributing clerks' from the rest.
  • 48. Among deaths for 1509 (493). He may be the Master John Barkby who was a grammar school master at St Bartholomew's Hospital in 1476 and at St Paul's in 1493 and 1502–3 (Christianson, Directory of London Stationers). Christianson however, conflates this individual with the stationer of the parish of St Sepulchre, whose will was apparently proved in 1504 (Guildhall MS 9168/2, f. 1v) and who cannot therefore be the individual on BR.
  • 49. Probably the John Watt, citizen and grocer, who requested burial in the chapel of St Mary Magdalen within St Leonard Shoreditch and left 6s 8d to the maintenance of the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 8 June, proved 27 June, 1521 (PROB 11/20, f. 85r).
  • 50. John Matthew, citizen and baker, who requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Michael Wood Street and left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity and £40 to the Jesus guild at St Paul's by his will of 10 February, proved 9 April, 1524 (Guildhall MS 9171/10, f. 36r). Dr Elizabeth New has identified him as the warden of the Jesus guild 1515–6 who was active in its affairs 1515–23. His wife Kathenne, mentioned in his will, was admitted with him above (330).
  • 51. Among deaths for 1494 (338). A John Campion, fishmonger, of St Mary Magdalen Old Fish Street left a will of 18 October, proved 31 October, 1493 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 64r).
  • 52. Among deaths for 1517 (578). Alice Hampton, of Holywell, Middlesex, widow of William Hampton, Kt and alderman, who died in 1482. By her will of 13 May 1514, proved 4 October 1516, she requested burial in the conventual church of St John the Baptist there (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 5v).

  • 54. Among deaths for 1505 if the 'Bramstoio' there is a scribal error for Bramston (443). Joan was apparently the wife of John Bramston, among admissions for 1491 and deaths for 1505 (311, 442). They are probably identifiable with the John Bram- ston, parishioner of St Mary Matfellon, whose will of 1 September, proved 27 September, 1504 mentions his wife Joan (PROB 11/14, f. 133v). She, a widow remaining resident in the same parish, left a will proved 13 January 1505 (Guildhall MS 9168/2, f. 46v).

  • 56. Perhaps the John Wells who was rector of St Nicholas Acon 1472–93 (Hennessy, pp 194, lxxxi). He requested burial in the Queen's Chapel of St Katherine by the Tower in his will of 17 April 1493, proved later that month (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 52v).
  • 57. Rector of St George, Botolph Lane, 1474–92 (Hennessy, pp 109, lxviii). He requested burial in the processional way there and left 20d to his parish clerk Robert Hewster by his will of 10 July, proved 26 July, 1492 (PROB 11/9, f. 66v).
  • 58. Probably the John Reynold, citizen and mercer, of St Pancras who left 8d to the parish clerk there for singing at his funeral and ringing the church bell by his will of 27 July, proved 21 August, 1492 (PROB 11/9, f. 96r).
  • 59. Probably the Lawrence Holt, citizen and barber, who requested burial in the churchyard of St Matthew Friday Street by his will of 12 September, proved 7 November, 1493 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 42v). His wife Alice is mentioned there and an Alice Holt (Holte) is among admissions for 1493 (330).
  • 60. Widow of William Taylor, Kt, alderman 1458–83 and four times master of the Grocers (Beaven, 11, 11; Thrupp, p 368). She is mentioned in his will of 25 July 1483 (no probate) as his second wife (PROB 11/7, f. 79v).
  • 61. Elizabeth Stockton, widow of John Stockton, alderman (157), married Gerard Caniziani, mercer, after John's death in 1473 (Thrupp, p 368).
  • 62. Katherine, widow of Richard West, 7th Baron de la Warr, who died in 1476. She was the daughter of Sir Robert Hungerford. The dowager Lady de la Warr died on 12 May 1493 (GEC Complete Peerage).
