  • 12. Among deaths for 1464 (94). Sacrist of St Paul's and prebendary of Oxgate 1427–49 (resigned); rector of St Botolph Billingsgate from 1444. For his ecclesiastical career see Hennessy, pp 42, 107 and xlii and Fasti, p 53. By his will of 4 June 1462, proved 9 March 1465 (PROB 11/5, f. 59v) he left 13s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul and and 20s to the Pappey fraternity.   • 14. A Robert Kent BCL, of New College, Oxford, who served as proctor in 1432 and 1449 was also a proctor in the Court of Arches and attested a document in the house of a canon of St Paul's in 1450 (Emden, BRUO to 1500).

Fellow of Pembroke Hall, Cambridge (admitted 1436); rector of All Hallows the Great 1448–59 (vacated); joined the Charterhouse at Sheen 1459; later joined the Bridgettines; confessor-general at Syon by 1472 (Emden, BRUC to 1500). VCH Middlesex, I, 190 gives his death in 1488 according to the Syon Martiloge (contra Emden).
  • 21. Probably the priest who was elected Master of the Hospital of St Augustine Pappey in 1482–3 (VCH London, I, 550).
  • 22. Among deaths for 1458 (54). John Scott was rector of St Michael Bassishaw and wished to be buried in the choir of his church, before his stall there. He left a bequest of 20d to his parish clerk Robert Welwick (Welwyk) (44, 130) by his will of 22 May, proved 16 June, 1458 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 248v).
  • 23. There are several priests named John Penbroke or Pembroke attested in London at this time. He is probably identifiable with the chaplain of St Nicholas Shambles noted on the lay subsidy roll for 1436 (Thrupp, p 387). He seems also to be identifiable with the John Penbroke, chaplain of the same church, who left a will of 5 February 1467, proved 21 September 1468 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 27v) in which he asked to be buried in the Lady chapel there. Penbroke appears among deaths for 1469 (including entries for 1468) (123). Possibly identical with the John Penbroke who was a chaplain at St John Zachary in 1459, when he was noted in the will of Thomas Randolph, another chaplain there (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 288r).
  • 24. Among deaths for 1456 (48). Rector of St Botolph, Bishopsgate (which he exchanged in 1433) and rector of St Mildred Poultry 1435–54, when he resigned (Hennessy, pp 111, 285); prebendary of Portpool in St Paul's 1427–47 (Fasti, p 57). By his will of 13 December 1455 (no probate) Saxton left 6s 8d to the common box of the parish clerks' fraternity (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 190v) and the same amount to the parish clerks who attended his obsequies. He wished to be buried before the high altar of St Mildred Poultry.
  • 25. Among deaths for 1490 (308). A priest of St Mary Woolchurch where he wished to be buried according to his will of 16 June 1488, proved 19 April 1490 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 5r).
  • 26. Chaplain of St Nicholas Olave; his will of 3 July 1452, proved 13 April 1453 (where his name is rendered Ardelthorp) reveals that he was born at Addlethorpe, Lincs (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 89v). He wished to be buried in the church or cemetery of St Nicholas Olave. His death is not noted on BR.
  • 27. A John Nicholl was rector of St Martin Orgar in 1436, when he was listed as custodian of the property of two chantries there (Thrupp, p 387).
  • 28. Among deaths for 1462 (75). Probably the John Chapman, chaplain of St Margaret Fish Street Hill, who left a will (no probate) of 2 January 1462 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 332r).

  • 30. Among deaths for 1504 (429). Prebendary of Caddington Major in St Paul's before 1467; exchanged this prebend with Henry Sharp 5 February 1467 for one in St Stephen's Westminster (Fasti, p 24).
  • 31. One of this name was a chaplain at Eton College June 1449-June 1451; (?)BA Oxon; presented by the College to the rectory of Martyr Worthy and Querle, Hants, 11 December 1451; dead by December 1464 (Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 32. Prebendary of Weldland in St Paul's 1447–57, of Wenlocksbarn 1457–62 (resigned); see Fasti, pp 67, 69, Hayman was also rector of St Faith's 1437–64 and archdeacon of Huntingdon (Hennessy, pp 53, 55, 99, and xlviii).   • 36. Among deaths for 1454 (37). Sturgeon was a composer and member of the Chapel Royal c1413–52: see New Grove Dictionary for his career. He was elected a scholar of Winchester in 1399; subdean of the Chapel Royal 1428 and precentor of St Paul's 1442–54. By his will of 31 May, proved 18 June, 1454 (PROB 11/1, f. 75v) he wished to be buried in the chapel of Our Lady and St Nicholas before the north door of St Paul's.
  • 37. Among deaths for 1475 (177). Nicholas Bungay alias Blome, a native of Bungay, Suffolk and a priest of St Paul's. By his will of 13 September 1474, proved 10 March 1475, Bungay requested burial in the chapel of St John the Baptist within St Paul's. He left various bequests to the Cathedral's clergy and staff (PROB 11/6, f. 135r).
  • 38. A priest of this name was a household chaplain within the chapel of Henry VI in 1456 (D Baldwin, The Chapel Royal: Ancient and Modern (1990), Appendix II, pp 415–43).
  • 39. A priest of this name was warden of Guildhall College in 1448 (VCH London, I, 577). VCH states that he died in 1488 on the basis of J Weever, Ancient Funeral Monuments (1631), p 399, but a 'Dominus Thomas Frawnces' is among deaths for 1483 (245) if this is the same individual.

From London diocese, he was ordained priest 21 May 1407 on the title of Garlickhithe (Davis, 6785). In his will of 1 August 1453, proved 4 November 1455 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 172r) Huntington mentions that he was a brother of the Pappey fraternity of priests, to whom he left 20s. Thomas Humberston, parish clerk, was one of his executors.
  • 42. Among deaths (as Magister Willelmus Chirchesay) for 1488 (294). Monk of Westminster Abbey, where he was admitted in the year Michaelmas 1439–40; member of the Assumption Guild at St Margaret's Westminster, one of three commissaries at the resignation of Abbot Norwich in 1467 (Pearce, p 187). He died in 1487, according to Pearce, but he appears among the Abbey infirmarer's accounts for Michaelmas 1487–8.
  • 43. A William Ripon of Merton Priory, Surrey, was ordained acolyte 24 February 1442, subdeacon 21 September 1443, deacon 19 December 1444 and priest 12 March 1446 (Davis, 11623) and may be the canon regular noted here.
  • 44. Among deaths for 1455 (43). William Prince, chaplain of St Christopher le Stocks in whose cemetery he asked to be buried by his will of 1 April, proved 28 April, 1456 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 186r).
  • 45. Among deaths for 1470. Norwich was Abbot of Westminster 1463–9, to which house he had been admitted in the year Michaelmas 1423–4; also archdeacon of Craven 1451. Dissatisfaction with his government of the Abbey led to his retirement from office in 1467 and he died in 1469 (Pearce, pp 141–2).
  • 46. Among deaths for 1454 (37). Chaplain of St Mildred (whether Bread Street or Poultry is unspecified) according to his will of 17 August 1452, proved 10 August (?)1453 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 112r). Harleston also left 6s 8d to the Pappey fraternity.
  • 47. Monk of Westminster Abbey, to which he was admitted in the year Michaelmas 1440–1. Edmund Downe (Down) was a member of the Assumption Guild at St Margaret's Westminster who was dropped from the payments 1467–8 (Pearce, p 13).
  • 48. Among deaths for 1479 (211). A citizen and mason, Andrew Elliott left several bequests to the parish clerks' fraternity in his will of 13 January, proved 23 July, 1478 (PROB 11/6, f. 257v). These included 6s 8d to the fraternity itself, 6s 8d to be distributed among the clerks of the fraternity who came to his burial, another 6s 8d for division among clerks who came to his month's mind and 4d to each of the four clerks who brought his body to burial. He may have been a parishioner of St Michael Bassishaw as he left further bequests to this church and its priest.
  • 49. Probably the wife of John Bromer, alderman 1465–74, whose late wives Elizabeth and Agnes are mentioned in his will of 14 March, proved 10 December, 1474 (PROB 11/6, f. 130r). He was among admissions for 1464 (92), when an Agnes Bromer (Brommer)'s death is recorded (95).
  • 50. Probably the wife of Henry Luke, citizen and brewer, of St Mary Staining, who is mentioned in his will of 27 August 1464 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 372v). He appears among admissions before 1449 (12) and deaths for 1464 (94). Her entry here in a later hand indicates admission slightly later than Henry, but before Ascension Day 1454.
  • 51. Among deaths for 1474 (170). Agnes had married John Bracy, citizen and tallowchandler (16, 130), and acted as principal executor of his will when he died in March 1470 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 53v) having previously been married to John Chesham. In her will of 31 January 1471, proved 28 January 1474 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 129r) she asked to be buried with her first husband in St Mary Woolchurch. Her entry in a later hand indicates admission shortly after 1449. As John Bracy's previous wife Margaret who is mentioned in his will of 10 June 1467, enrolled 19 May 1477 (Husting Roll 207 (13), ed Sharpe, Calendar of wills, II, 575) is apparently among the deaths for 1450 (29), Agnes's admission probably occurred in or after the calendar year 1450 and before Ascension Day 1454. Only after the latter date do new admissions appear with the relevant deaths for each year on BR.

  • 56. Among deaths (as Alice Delawe) for 1484 (257). Probably the Alice Dellow, by then widow of William Dellow, of St Michael Cornhill, whose will of 9 January, was proved 5 February, 1484 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 363v). She left bequests to the priests and clerks of St Michael's.
  • 57. Among deaths for 1476 (188). Wife of John Leach (alias Harpden), citizen and poulter, who predeceased her. In her will of 20 August 1475, proved 31 January 1476 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 187r) Alice left 3s 4d to the Pappey fraternity and 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity (societas clericorum). She asked to be buried in St Nicholas Shambles, with her late husband.
  • 58. Perhaps the wife of John Trebon, junior master in 1451, Alice appears among deaths for 1469 (including entries for 1468) (123).
  • 59. Probably the Alice Dowde mentioned as wife and residuary legatee of Robert Dowde, citizen and fuller, in his will proved 20 July 1464, where he states that he was a brother of the Fraternity of St Nicholas (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 363r). Robert is among deaths for 1464 (94) and Alice Dowde appears among those for 1481 (230).
  • 60. Alderman 1465–81; mayor 1479–80; knighted in the field by Edward IV 1471; a draper who died 1481 (Beaven, II, 13). In his will of 24 November 1481, enrolled 15 October 1498 (Husting Roll 225 (15), ed Sharpe, Calendar of wills, II, 598), James requested burial in the chapel of the Holy Trinity within St Dunstan in the East. The parish clerks' fraternity were to be 'at the condveyng' of his body to the same church and to attend mass. Among deaths for 1482 (238).
  • 61. An individual with the same (unusual) name was the relict of John Wareyner, citizen and goldsmith, and her nuncupative will of 29 June 1479 was proved on 14 October 1488 (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 133v). Blithe wished to be buried in the church of St Botolph Bishopsgate, or where God willed.
  • 62. Wife of William Turk, citizen and fishmonger, who is mentioned in his will of 10 November 1471 as already deceased (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 300v). She was buried in the churchyard of St Margaret Fish Street Hill. Her death is noted among entries for 1463 (83) and his among those for 1481 (229).
  • 63. A John Tastard, parish clerk, is among admissions before 1449 (16) and deaths for 1473 (156).
  • 64. Of St Anne and St Agnes, Aldersgate; wife of Robert Quadring, citizen and stationer, of the same parish, whose will was drawn up on 21 March 1452 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 49r). Denise survived him, leaving a will of 11 December, proved 19 December, 1453 and asked to be buried with him in the parish cemetery. She bequeathed 16d to the four clerks bearing her body to burial. Only Robert's death is noted among those up to 1453 (34), where he is added to a list of dead clerks. Her name has however been erased from the entries for those admitted before 1449, in common with others who died between 1449 and 1454.
  • 65. Among deaths for 1453 (33). In her will of 1 March, proved 28 March, 1454, Denise Hancock alias Ferrer of St Peter Cornhill recounts that she was married to (i) Thomas Hancock and (ii) William Ferrer (Ferrour), citizen and brewer, and asked to be buried with Thomas in the church of St Peter Cornhill (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 125v).
  • 66. Junior master of the parish clerks' fraternity in 1458 and a trustee of the fraternity's property in 1473 (Christie, p 89). Edmund Smewen (Smewyn) was parish clerk of St Mary Woolchurch where he wished to be buried in the church, leaving 40s to the fraternity to pray for his soul and 6s 8d for their lights in his will of 10 November, proved 20 November, 1476 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 199v). He left the substantial sum of £100 in plate and money to his wife Joan. Among deaths for 1477 (194).
  • 67. Recorded as a clerk among deaths for 1474 (167). Probably the Edward Chamber, parish clerk of St Faith, who was left 12d by Edmund Cook (Cokke) of the same parish in his will of 20 September 1450 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 14v). The latter is also among deaths for 1450 (29).
  • 68. Wife of John Rogerson, citizen and plumber, who was also admitted before 1449 (16) and is among deaths for 1480 (222), along with Emma herself. (223). In her will of 10 July, proved 12 August, 1479, she asked to be buried in the same place as her late husband John in her parish church of St Nicholas Shambles (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 248r). She left 6s 8d for the sustenance of the parish clerks' fraternity and the same sum to the Pappey fraternity among bequests to various guilds. Her cousin Margaret Lathell, named there, is among deaths for 1498 (369)
  • 69. Among deaths for 1471 (139), Emmott is named as second (and current) wife of Lawrence Springer, citizen and cheesemonger, of St Peter Cornhill in his will of 13 October, proved 17 November, 1450, his previous spouse Katherine (among deaths before 1449, (23)), being deceased (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 17r). Lawrence appears among deaths for 1450 (29).
  • 70. Among deaths (as Emma Edersey) for 1464 (95). A William Edersey (Idersey) appears on BR as senior master of the parish clerks in 1452 (31).
  • 71. Among deaths (as Elena Jotis) for 1462 (75). Presumably the woman of this name who is mentioned as wife of John Joutes, tailor, in his will of 11 November, proved 15 November, 1451 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 45r). He is among deaths for 1451 (30).
  • 72. An Edith who was the wife of Thomas Whaplode, citizen and tailor, is mentioned in his will of 31 August 1467, proved 14 May 1468 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 28r). He is probably identifiable as the Thomas Whaplode among admissions for 1462 (73) and deaths for 1467 (115). She survived him, acting as his executrix.
  • 73. Among deaths for 1474 (170). Elizabeth, widow of William Chattock, citizen and fishmonger. In her will of 11 March, proved 23 March, 1474, she asked to be buried in the Lady chapel of her parish church of St Margaret Fish Street Hill and left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 156v).
  • 74. Among deaths for 1466 (109). A Geoffrey Wade, citizen and pinner, of St Katherine Cree left a will of 12 September, proved 18 September, 1466 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 388r).
  • 75. Among deaths for 1464 (94). Probably the Henry Luke, citizen and brewer, of St Mary Staining who asked for burial in the great churchyard of St Paul's. His will (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 372v) of 27 August 1464 (no probate) mentions, inter alia, his son Edward and wife Agnes, and individuals of this name are among admissions (9, 5) at this time on BR.
  • 76. Among deaths for 1470 (130). Henry Castleacre (Castlaker), citizen and vintner, requested burial in the tomb of his late wife Agnes within St Michael le Querne by his will of 29 November 1466, proved 10 May 1470 (PROB 11/5, f. 231v). By then he was married to Isobel. Agnes Castleacre was also admitted before 1449 (5), and is among deaths for 1465 (102). Isobel was admitted in 1465 (101) and is among deaths for 1472 (148).
  • 77. Among deaths for 1462 (75). Presumably the Henry Otteware, citizen and girdler, of St Sepulchre, in which church he wished to be buried. He left wills of 15 March 1459, proved 29 August 1461 (PROB 11/4, f. 175v). His wife Agnes is mentioned there and an Agnes Otteware is also among admissions before 1449 (5).
  • 78. Among deaths for 1455 (43) and identifiable with Henry Purchas (Purchace), citizen and grocer, of St Olave Southwark with property in Little Hadham, Herts, whose will of (?)17 August 1455 was proved 5 May 1456 (PROB 11/4, f. 43v) He requested burial in the church of St Olave, where his late wife Christina was buried. A Christina Purchas appears among deaths for 1450 (29). A second wife Joan, mentioned as alive in the will, may be the individual among deaths for 1466 (109).
  • 79. The most likely reconstruction of the name Somerville is among deaths for 1457 (53). Probably the citizen and skinner of this name of St Antholin, who left a will (no probate) of 26 August 1457 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 226v)
  • 80. Among deaths for 1469 (including entries for 1468) (123) MP London 1447. alderman 1458–68, mayor 1461, KB 1465 and master of the Mercers 1451, 1457, 1460, 1468 (Beaven, II, 11). In his will of 17 May 1466, proved 12 May 1468, Wiche left 10 marks for the sustenance of the parish clerks' fraternity (PROB 11/5, f. 178r). Buried in St Dionis Backchurch (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 201). His third wife Dame Alice is among admissions (as Alice Holte) for 1455 (42) and deaths for 1475 (178).
  • 81. Among deaths for 1453 (33). One of this name was churchwarden of St Giles Cripplegate in 1436 (Thrupp, p 386), and is perhaps identical with the Hugh Riche who paid quarterage to the Trinity Guild at St Botolph Aldersgate in 1443–6 (Basing, Parish Fraternity Register, 46, 49).
  • 82. Among deaths for 1471 (139). She is probably identifiable with Ellen Davy, widow, relict of Thomas Remy, goldsmith, of St Benet Fink. His will of 21 November 1442 was proved 5 December 1444 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 106v). Ellen acted as executrix, and asked to be buried in the Lady chapel there with her husband in her own will of 17 July 1464, proved 2 August 1470 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 61r).
  • 83. This Hanseatic merchant (Esterling) is one of only a handful of foreigners to be admitted to the Fraternity of St Nicholas. Some had their own fraternities in London, such as the Fraternity of the Holy Blood of Wylsnak (Saxony) which was established in the church of the Crutched Friars, and whose ordinances survive (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 404v).
  • 84. Among deaths for 1462 (75). An ironmonger; MP London 1433; alderman 1434–60; mayor 1442 (Beaven, II, 8). Licensed to rebuild the cross in Westcheap in 1441. Hatherley requested burial in the church of St Michael Queenhithe by his will of 12 April 1459, enrolled 3 February 1466 (Husting Roll 195 (44), ed Sharpe, Calendar of wills, II, 552–3). The three deceased wives mentioned there (Isobel, Joan and Margaret) are all entered on BR. A fourth wife Joan apparently survived him (Thrupp, p 348).
  • 85. Among deaths for 1464 (94). MP London 1453; alderman 1454–64; master of the Grocers 1455–6, 1462–3; died 1464 (Beaven, II, 10). Details of Walden's family, including his son William, also on BR, are given in Thrupp, pp 371–2.
  • 86. A John Austin is also among deaths for 1464 (94). Perhaps identifiable with the parish clerk of St Leonard Shoreditch whose will of 26 June, proved 2 July, 1464, mentions his wife Elizabeth (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 362r). An Elizabeth Austin is recorded among deaths for 1475 (178).
  • 87. A trustee of the parish clerks' property described as a gentleman of London and Dorking, Surrey in deeds of 1446, now destroyed (Christie, p 87).
  • 88. Among deaths for 1465 (102). John Acres (Acrys), parish clerk of St John Zachary was senior master of the fraternity in 1460 (61). Only the probate of his will is recorded on 28 October 1465, at length, but he left 12d to the high altar of his parish church and 12d to the fabric, with 2d to St Paul's Cathedral (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 376v).
  • 89. Master of the fraternity in 1450 and 1463 (29, 78); trustee of the clerks' property in 1452 (Christie, p 88); among deaths for 1473 (156). See also Joan, Janet and Margaret Beby.
  • 90. Often identified as the composer of this name who was on the establishment of the Chapel Royal by 1441, and St George's Chapel, Windsor by 1460, where he disappears from view after 1483–4 (see New Grove Dictionary), but the suggestion is no more than a possibility. The name is a common one: there is another John Plummer who was the parish clerk of St Matthew Friday Street whose will was proved in 1481 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 324v).
  • 91. Probably the John Lincoln among deaths for 1463 (83). A later John Lincoln, subclerk, was admitted in 1459 (64) and a third John Lincoln, admitted in 1494 (334) is probably the parish clerk of St Giles Cripplegate who was master in 1507 and 1519 (457, 590). The spacing of these dates suggests three generations of the same family may be recorded here.
  • 92. Senior master in 1451 (30) and again when he appears at the head of the list of additional entries for 1462 and (?)1463 (84). Ledston's latest mastership was perhaps in 1461, the only year between 1452 and 1468 for which no masters can be identified. A trustee of the parish clerks' property in 1461 (Christie, p 88), he was among deaths for 1486 (273).
  • 93. Among deaths for 1463 (83). John Dogow, citizen and merchant, who requested burial in the church of St Ethelburga by his will of 16 August, proved 26 August, 1463 (PROB 11/5, f. 10r). A common councilman and pewterer (Tucker).
  • 94. Perhaps the citizen and brewer of St Peter Cornhill whose will of 19 May 1483, proved 22 January 1484, instructed his wife and executrix Alice to ensure that his obit was kept by the priest and clerk of St Peter's, where he was to be buried (Guildhall MS 9171, f. 362r). A John Ralph (Raaf) appears among deaths for 1484 (256), and an Alice Ralph (Raff) later appears among deaths for 1491 (314).
  • 95. Among deaths for 1482 (238). Catell may be the citizen and vintner who owned property in St Magnus Martyr, St Olave Southwark and Rochester, Kent, and whose will of 29 September, proved 9 November, 1481, requested burial in the church of St Magnus (PROB 11/7, f. 97v).
  • 96. Among deaths for 1469 (including entries for 1468) (123). Perhaps the John Wyram (Wyrom) who was parish clerk of St Botolph Aldersgate and a member of the Trinity guild there during 1443–6 (Basing, Parish Fraternity Register, 43, 46).
  • 97. Presumably the John Bird, parish clerk of an unknown parish, whose death is recorded among those for 1478 (202).
  • 98. One of the few instances where the trade of a layman is noted on BR. He appears among deaths for 1463 (83).
  • 99. Among deaths for 1463 (83). R Bowers in St George's Chapel. Windsor, in the Late Middle Ages, ed C Richmond and E Scarff (2001), pp 188–9 identifies him with some probability as the John Mildenhall who was a boy chorister of the Chapel Royal in 1421 and a lay clerk at St George's Chapel (in post 1435, vacated by 1438), although the Mildenhall on BR is not positively identified as a clerk. Bowers wrongly attributes his death to the following year from Ascension Day 1464 however, following Christie.
  • 100. Possibly John Gedney, draper, alderman 1415–49 and mayor in 1427 and 1447 (Beaven, II, 4; Thrupp, p 345). The alderman was married to Joan, and 'Domina Iohanna Gedna' appears among additional deaths for 1462 and (?)1463 (89)

Probably the John Godyng, citizen and brewer, with property in St Michael Bassishaw and Duxford, Cambs, who asked to be buried in the church of this London parish with his late wife Katherine by his will of 29 May, proved 7 June, 1463 (PROB 11/5, f. 1r). His wife and executrix, Isobel, seems to be identifiable with the Isobel Goodyng admitted in 1462 (74). A John Godyng (Godyn) was also assessed for property worth £30 per annum in London and elsewhere in 1436 (Thrupp, p 381).
  • 102. Among deaths for 1466 (109) Probably the John Gugge, citizen and pewterer. who requested burial in the tower of St Michael Cornhill by his will of 8 November 1465, proved 8 July 1466 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 386r). His wife Katherine acted as principal executor, and is presumably identifiable with the Katherine Gugge among admissions for 1466 (108).
  • 103. Junior master of the fraternity in 1451 (30). A John Trebone appears as a clerk of the King's Chapel in a grant of 27 May 1462 (Calendar of Patent Rolls 1461–1467, p 188) and as a late gentleman of the King's Chapel in a grant for life of £10 per annum from Easter last from the fee farm of the City of Worcester of 2 April 1472 (Calendar of Patent Rolls 1467–1477, p 330). An Alice Trebon. admitted before 1449 (5) and among deaths for 1469 (123), also appears on BR
  • 104. The surname is possibly Newman

Among deaths for 1470 (130), and presumably the citizen and tallowchandler who held extensive property in St Mary Woolchurch, St Mary Woolnoth and St Michael Paternoster Royal, who left a will of 12 March, proved 28 March, 1470 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 53v). John Bracy had served as a common councilman for Broad Street ward in the 1460s (Tucker). He requested burial in St Mary Woolchurch where his late wife Margery (29) was buried. His wife Agnes who survived him in turn requested burial with him in her will of 31 January 1471, proved 28 January 1474 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 129r). She appears among admissions before 1449 and deaths for 1474 (5, 170). This tallowchandler may also be the individual assessed on property worth £8 per annum in London and elsewhere in 1436 (Thrupp, p 379).
  • 106. Among deaths for 1458 (54). Identifiable as the composer of the same name who was a singing man in the Lady Chapel choir at Westminster Abbey in 1453–4 and verger (a post reserved for a musician on the establishment) of the collegiate church of St Stephen, Westminster (see New Grove Dictionary). Bedingham (Bedyngham) made over his property to other members of the establishment there on 15 January 1457 which he confirmed on 30 March 1458 (C 54/308, m. 21d). However, he cannot be the same individual as the John Bodenham who was a scholar and fellow of New College, Oxford (see Emden, BRUO to 1500) as he is not recorded among the priests at the beginning of BR but among the laity and parish or choir clerks and the post of verger was not occupied by priests in any of the collegiate foundations of the period, contra Grove and DNB Missing Persons.

Although there is no reference to the Fraternity of St Nicholas there, his wife Christina was granted probate and a Christina Bentley appears later among deaths for both 1487 (286) and 1488 (293).
  • 112. A citizen and plumber with property in St Nicholas Shambles and St Andrew Hubbard. In his will of 7 June, proved 17 July, 1479, Rogerson requested burial in his parish church of St Nicholas Shambles. He left 6s 8d to the clerks' fraternity and the same sum to the Pappey brotherhood (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 244v). His wife Emmott who acted as a co-executor of her husband appears among admissions before 1449 (9) and deaths for 1480 (223).
  • 113. Among deaths for 1476 (187). A John Alborough (Alburgh), mercer, appears as a common councilman for Cordwainer ward c1462 (Tucker).
  • 114. Among deaths for 1473 (157). Possibly the citizen and chandler of this name with property in St Botolph, Bishopsgate and Stamford Rivers, Essex who was a parishioner of St Ethelburga, and whose will of 1 January, was proved 20 January, 1473 (PROB 11/6, f. 56v). Steward requested burial in the church of St Botolph. Although there is no reference to the Fraternity of St Nicholas there, he left 6s 8d to each of the master parish clerks of the above two London parishes for attendance at his obsequies in the month after his death.
  • 115. Among deaths for 1462 (75). Possibly the John Bickling, citizen and pasteler, who wished to be buried in the church of St Bride and whose will of 2 October, was proved 13 December, 1461 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 318r).
  • 116. Among deaths for 1472 (147). Presumably the citizen and poulter of this name, alias John Harpden or Harpynden, with property in St Nicholas Shambles, St Peter Cornhill and three Middlesex parishes, whose will of 7 June, proved 27 June, 1471 requested burial in St Nicholas Shambles with a sung funeral (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 82r). His wife Alice Leach (Leche) alias Harpden who is among admissions between 1449 and 1454 (5) and deaths for 1476 (188) left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity in her will.
  • 117. Among deaths for 1457 (53). John Dobbs, parish clerk of All Hallows, Barking, is named in the inventory of goods dated 16 October 1452 (All Hallows' parish records). In his will of 31 January, proved 27 May, 1457 he requested burial next to the font there, leaving 6s 8d to cover the expense (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 217v). His wife is given as Alice in the will, but she does not appear on BR. (We are grateful to Ms Anna Greening, parish archivist at All Hallows, for confirmation of our reading of this name in the inventory.)
  • 118. The name is only visible under ultra violet light. He is described as 'clericus' when he appears among deaths for 1457 (53). This may well be the John West, clerk, who is known from deeds since destroyed as a trustee of the fraternity holding property in Bishopsgate in 1438 (Christie, p 86).
  • 119. Among deaths for 1460 (68). John Burton, citizen and mercer, requested burial in the chancel of St Michael Bassishaw. In his will of 14 October 1459, proved 13 December 1460, he left 40s to the fellowship of parish clerks for the maintenance of poor brethren so that 12 or more of them would attend St Michael Bassishaw on the eve of his first year's mind and the following morning to sing placebo and dirige and mass of requiem (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 303r). Robert Welwick (Welwyk), parish clerk, acted as overseer of the will.
  • 120. Among deaths for 1463 (83). Probably the citizen and dyer of All Hallows the Great, alias John Carter, who left a will of 10 March 1464 (no probate), which mentions his wife Julian (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 355r). He requested burial in the cloister of the above church. A Julian Cresalton also appears among admissions before 1449 (19)
  • 121. A John Bamborough (Baumborgh'), parish clerk of St Botolph Aldersgate, and his wife Agnes were admitted to the parish's Trinity guild during 1400–1. See Basing, Parish Fraternity Register, 32.
  • 122. Probably the John Harris who was a trustee of the parish clerks' property in 1452 (Christie, p 88) and junior master in 1454 (35), since no others with this name occur among the admissions before 1449.

John Medwall was apparently parish clerk of St Margaret's Southwark, where there are several salary payments to him and other references in the parish records beginning in February 1456 until 1485 (London Metropolitan Archives P92/SAV/1–3 passim). He also acted as administrator of the goods of a former churchwarden, John Multon, suing for money owed to his estate in 1477 (C 1/66/413). The administration of this Julian Cresalton's will granted in 1470 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 49v) mentions her son John Cresalton, also referred to in the will of his father John, noted above. She was a parishioner of All Hallows the Great.
  • 129. As 'Domina Katerina Combis' she appears among deaths for 1470 (130). She was the wife of William Coombes, citizen and alderman, who died in 1452 (PROB 11/1, f. 43v) and who appears among deaths on BR for that year (31). His widow requested burial at St George's Botolph Lane with her late husband and left 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity to make intercession for her soul by her will of 24 January, proved 21 October, 1469 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 43v).

  • 141. A John Mole, parish chaplain of Grays, Thurrock, Essex is known from his will of 28 March, proved 7 April, 1429 (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 189r).
  • 142. Rector of St Mary Abchurch 1399–1405; of St Peter Cornhill 1405–29 (Hennessy, pp 296, 375 and cxxix). His will appears with two separate probates of 19 July, and 19 August, 1429 (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 221v). Among his bequests he left 3s 4d to the master parish clerk and 20d to the subclerk of St Peter Cornhill.
  • 143. Rector of St Mary-at-Hill 1428–30, when he died (Hennessy, p 305).
  • 144. From the position of this name among others who died in the late 1420s or early 1430s, this is possibly the William Price who was rector of St Leonard Foster Lane 1424–7 and of St Andrew Holborn 1427–30, when he died (Hennessy, pp 126, 89).
  • 145. The name is uncommon and so he may be identifiable with the Master Simon Kempston active as a notary public 1401–27 (Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 146. Probably the ordinand of this name from Winchester diocese, who was ordained deacon on 19 December 1394 and (in Farnham Castle Chapel) priest on 6 March 1395 (Davis). More certainly, he was rector of St Mary Woolnoth 1417–29, when he died.
  • 147. Probably the John Romsey who was rector of St Ethelburga Bishopsgate mentioned in 1404 and who died in 1426–7 (Hennessy, p 152). His will of 7 December 1426 was proved 27 January 1427 (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 164r). Parish Clerks' Hall in what is now Clark's Place off Bishopsgate lay close to the church. He may also be identical with the individual of the same name who was ordained deacon on 23 September 1396 on the title of Elsing Spital and priest on 23 December 1396 on the title of St Helen's Priory (Davis, 32027).
  • 148. Perhaps the Philip Steward who was ordained acolyte on 19 February 1418, subdeacon 1 June, and deacon 21 September, 1420, all on the title of the Hospital of St Mary without Bishopsgate (Davis, 9430).
  • 149. A John Spore, citizen and ferrour, of St Alban Wood Street and Watton at Stone, Herts left a will of 5 December 1428, proved 28 May 1429, in which he left 6d to the parish clerk of St Alban (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 219r).
  • 150. Almost certainly the mercer and alderman 1393–1423, who served three times as mayor and who died in 1423 (will proved 8 March). See DNB for his life. No other individual of this name is known from the London sources of the period. His entry is followed by that of William Cambridge, also an alderman.
  • 151. William Cambridge, ironmonger (later grocer), and alderman 1415–32, who died in the latter year (Beaven, II, 5; Thrupp, pp 327–8) and was buried in St Mary at Hill. He was married three times and his third wife Edith, who also appears among the deaths before 1448, survived him, dying in April 1443. His will of 27 December 1431 was enrolled on 6 May 1433 (Husting Roll 161 (47) ed Sharpe, Calendar of wills, II, 463–4).
  • 152. A John Richer, citizen and cutler, of St Bride Fleet Street left a will (no probate) of 20 August 1430 (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 248r).
  • 153. A Thomas Ryngold, vicar choral of St Paul's Cathedral, was ordained acolyte on 17 December 1401 and priest 27 March 1417 on the title of St Helen's Priory (Davis, 30699).
  • 154. Rector of St Gregory's by St Paul's 1398–1423 (Hennessy, pp 321, cxxxiv). He had earlier served as a chantry chaplain at St Paul's, see HMC Ninth Report, Appendix I, 12 (1,076) and 55 (1,952).
  • 155. Citizen and parish clerk of St Michael Queenhithe. William Laverok also appears in the list of dead clerks to 1454 (34). He left a surplice and portifory with musical notation to his church in his will of 3 September 1426, proved 10 October 1427 (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 184v).   • 156. A Roger Rowland (Rouland) of London diocese was ordained acolyte and subdeacon 31 March, deacon 22 September, and priest 22 December, 1408 and beneficed (as an acolyte) to Nettleswell, Essex (Davis, 6718)
  • 157. A William Long, citizen and textwriter, who requested burial in the Pardon churchyard of St Paul's (although a parishioner of All Hallows Honey Lane) left a will of 22 August, proved 27 August, 1428 (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 202r).
  • 158. A Hugh Neale (Neel), citizen and brewer, requested burial next to his deceased wives before the altar of the Holy Trinity in St Peter Cornhill by his will (probate incomplete) of 25 May 1428 (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 200v).
  • 159. A William Bedford of Bermondsey Abbey was ordained subdeacon 20 September 1427 and deacon 20 March 1428 (Davis, 11349).
  • 160. Probably the Katherine noted as the deceased wife of Lawrence Springer, citizen and cheesemonger of St Peter Cornhill in his will of 13 October, proved 17 November, 1450 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 17r) who left bequests to the parish clerks' fraternity. He is among deaths for 1450 (29).
  • 161. A John Cadwolde junior, citizen and shearman, of St Swithin London Stone, left a will of 11 September, proved 30 September, 1433 (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 359r).
  • 162. The name is unusual, and he may therefore be identifiable with the Simon Flower (Flour), rector of St Katherine Coleman 1405–7 and St Nicholas Cole Abbey 1407–31, when he died (Hennessy, pp 116, 345).
  • 163. A William Downe was rector of St Martin Ludgate 1403–46 (Hennessy, pp 292, cxxvii) but the other deaths appearing on this section of the folio are all earlier.
  • 164. Alderman and goldsmith (Beaven, II, 7). William Rus's will of 5 June 1433 was enrolled 2 December 1437 (Husting Roll 166 (21), ed Sharpe, Calendar of wills, II, 482). He left £2 to the parish clerks' fraternity (Guildhall MS 9171/3, ff. 385r, 393r).
  • 165. A Robert Finch (Fynche), citizen and butcher, of St Nicholas Shambles, left a will of 27 September 1430, proved 27 January 1435 (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 418v).
  • 166. Rector of St Swithin London Stone 1405–38 (Hennessy, pp 389, clv). In his will of 12 April, proved 31 May 1438, he left 6s 8d for the sustenance of the parish clerks' fraternity and 12d to one Simon, his own parish clerk (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 508v).
  • 167. David Price (or ap Rees), DCL; rector of St Nicholas Shambles to 1433; of St Magnus Martyr 1434–8; prebendary of Holbourn 1423–38; dead by 10 November 1438 (Emden, BRUO to 1500, under David ap Rees).
  • 168. John Horne alias Daventry, STP; rector of St Mary at Hill 1430–9 (Hennessy, p 305). He originated from Daventry, Northants, and left 10s to the parish church there in his will. Horne bequeathed 6s 8d to the master parish clerk and 5s to the assistant clerk at St Mary at Hill by his will of 19 April, proved 28 April, 1439 (PROB 11/3, f. 197v).
  • 169. A John Delamare was a canon of St Bartholomew's, Smithfield in 1408–9, when he was admitted to the Trinity Guild at St Botolph's Aldersgate (Basing, Parish Fraternity Register, 36).
  • 170. First wife of John Hatherley, alderman, who is among admissions before 1448 (14) and deaths for 1462 (75). She predeceased him and is mentioned with his other wives Joan and Margaret, who also appear on BR, in his will of 12 April 1459, enrolled 3 February 1466 (Husting Roll 195 (44), ed Sharpe, Calendar of wills, II, 552).
  • 171. Citizen and fishmonger of St Nicholas Olave and St Nicholas Cole Abbey. In his will of 17 April, proved 18 May, 1439, Stebbing left 6s to the common box of the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul and the souls of his family, together with 6s to the chaplain or master of the fraternity for the labour involved (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 14v).
  • 172. Presumably the Agnes Moysant (Moysaunt), widow, who was a parishioner of St Peter Cornhill, where her husband Thomas lay buried. In her will of 11 December 1441, proved 26 January 1442, she asked for burial in the church and left 12d to each of the church's parish clerks to pray for her soul (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 76r).

  • 175. A Nicholas Triplow, citizen and fishmonger, who wished to be buried in the church of St Bartholomew's Priory, Smithfield, left a will of 23 October, proved 25 November, 1441 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 73r).
  • 176. Probably identifiable with the 'clerk of the parish of Staining' who gave evidence against John Colchester on 3 March 1425 (Corporation Journal 2, f. 38v). See Barron, Index to Corporation Journals 1416–63. He is omitted from the (incomplete) list of deceased parish clerks who died before Ascension Day 1454 and who are noted separately on BR (24).
  • 177. Probably the Bartholomew Lathe, plumber, for whom an act of administration survives, from proceedings before the commissary of the prior of St Bartholomew's, Smithfield, together with the probate of his will of 6 October 1442 (PROB 11/1, f. 146v).
  • 178. Richard Snodenham, citizen, barber and tailor requested burial in the church of St Augustine Watling Street. He bequeathed 20d to the parish clerk there for digging his grave and ringing the bells and 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity by his nuncupative will of 12 June, and testament of 1 July, 1442, proved 3 July 1442 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 87v). This mentions his wife Rose, who survived him, and who also apparently appears below among deaths before 1448 (24).
  • 179. A citizen and brazier, who wished to be buried in St Michael Cornhill where his parents were interred. Walpole left 26s 8d for the ringing of bells and prayers for his soul by the chaplains and parish clerks of the church on the anniversary of his death, 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity and 30s to the Fraternity of Sixty Priests in his will of 28 April 1441, proved 30 April 1442 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 89v).
  • 180. From the position of her entry among deaths for 1442–3, she may well be identifiable with the Agnes Whatton, widow of John Whatton, fishmonger, who wished to be buried with her late husband in the Pardon churchyard of St Paul's. This Agnes was the daughter and heir of John Growland and left a will of 28 October, proved 2 December, 1442 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 105r).
  • 181. Presumably Rose, widow of Richard Snodenham (died 1442) who appears above. She wished to be buried with her husband in the church of St Augustine, Watling Street by her will of 4 December 1442, proved 1 March 1443 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 114v).
  • 182. A Henry Ashborne (Ashbourne), citizen and surgeon, who requested burial in the Franciscans' church at Newgate (although a parishioner of St Audoen) left a will of 4 October 1442, proved 8 March 1443 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 115r)
  • 183. Citizen and grocer, of St Lawrence Jewry. In his will of 22 March, proved 25 April, 1443, Trymnel requested that the parish clerks' fraternity should take part in his burial and obsequies and he left 20s to the masters of the fraternity for its common box (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 118r).
  • 184. Third wife and widow of William Cambridge, grocer and alderman, also among these deaths before 1448 (23). She was formerly the wife of Richard Spencer of New Sarum (Thrupp, p 327). By her will of 7 April, proved 13 April, 1443 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 117r) she left 13s 4d to each of the parish clerks of St Mary at Hill where she wished to be buried with Cambridge.
  • 185. John Wells (died 1442), alderman 1420–36, who supervised the rebuilding of Guildhall Chapel where the parish clerks maintained two chaplains from 1442 (Beaven, II, 6 and Thrupp, p 373). By his will of 7 June 1442 he requested burial in the church of St Antholin (Lambeth Palace Library: Register Chichele, I, f. 484r).
  • 186. A John Edward, citizen and butcher, of St Botolph Aldgate, left a will of 8 November, proved 26 November, 1442 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 104r). William Andrew, parish clerk, acted as one of his executors.
  • 187. Presumably the citizen and goldsmith, who asked for burial in his parish church of St Benet Fink by his will of 21 November, proved 5 December, 1442 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 106v). His wife Ellen, who acted as co-executor, is also among admissions before 1449 (12), and, as Ellen Davy, among deaths for 1470 (139).
  • 188. Rector of St Bartholomew by the Exchange c1415–43 (Hennessy, pp 280, cxxiv). He requested burial in the chancel of his church by his will of 4 February, proved 15 June, 1443 (PROB 11/1, f. 119r).

  • 192. Perhaps identifiable with the John Luter (Luttur), citizen and grocer, of St Mary Woolchurch, as the name is uncommon. He left a will of 1 October 1444, proved 4 January 1445 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 156r) and his entry occurs among entries around this date on BR.
  • 193. A John Humber senior and junior both died in 1444 and requested burial in the churchyard of St Mary Woolchurch (Guildhall MS 9171/4, ff. 145v, 147v).
  • 194. A Thomas Mariner (Maryner), of the Hospital of St Thomas of Acre, was ordained acolyte 9 June 1408, subdeacon 20 September, and deacon 20 December, 1410, and priest 7 March 1411 (Davis, 6994).
  • 195. John Molesley (Mollesley), citizen and (?)sheather, requested burial in the cemetery of St Sepulchre by his will of 2 February, proved 3 March, 1445 (PROB 11/3, f. 237r). He left 3s 4d to the parish clerks of St Sepulchre for attendance at his obsequies.
  • 196. A Cambridge graduate (Emden, BRUC to 1500) with property in Middlesex and Surrey; prebendary of Broomesbury in St Paul's 1418–44, in the Pardon churchyard or cloister of which he requested burial. He had resigned his prebend by 29 September in the latter year and his will was proved 6 November 1444 (PROB 11/3, f. 227v).
  • 197. Alderman 1416–45, mayor 1426 and a London MP on four occasions between 1410 and 1445 (Beaven, II, 5; Thrupp, p 363).
  • 198. William de Lunes held property in Kent and Aquitaine and his incomplete will (no probate) occurs amongst others from 1445 (PROB 11/3, f. 238r). He requested burial in the chancel of St Mary Woolnoth and bequeathed 10s to each of the parish clerks there and 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul.
  • 199. Probably the William Ferrer (Ferrour), citizen and brewer, of London, whose will of 17 March, was proved 10 May, 1445 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 162v). His wife Agnes acted as his executor and an Agnes Ferrer (Ferrour) admitted before 1449 (5) appears among deaths for 1464 (95).
  • 200. Perhaps the schoolmaster, of St Peter Cornhill, who left a will of 1 August, proved 31 August, 1445 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 172v). Driffield asked to be buried in the parish cemetery there and left 4d to each of the priests and clerks of the parish.
  • 201. Perhaps the Thomas Knolles (Knollys), grocer, who requested burial in the church of St Antholin, and who left wills of 7–8 February, proved 18 February, 1446 (PROB 11/3, f. 239v). Although there is no evidence for any link with the fraternity there, his father, the alderman of the same name who died in 1435 (Beaven, II, 8) was a trustee of its property in 1397 (Christie, p 79).
  • 202. A citizen and baker of this name, of London, died before 23 March 1446 when administration of his estate was granted to his widow Joan (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 186r).
  • 203. A Thomas Adey (Ade), citizen and cellarer, of St Benet Gracechurch, requested burial with his parents in the cemetery of All Hallows Lombard Street (although a parishioner of St Benet Gracechurch) by his will of 26 October 1443, proved 15 March 1445 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 185v). One of his executors was John Stannard, a London parish clerk.
  • 204. Probably the Maud Eston who is mentioned as the late wife of John Eston (alias Coyfote), parish clerk, as being buried in the cemetery of St Michael Queenhithe in his will of 23 November 1449 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 277v). He is listed among clerks who died before 1454 (34)

  • 211. A William at Stoke alias Essex, citizen and dyer, requested burial in the church of St Peter Paul's Wharf by his will of 10 May 1445, proved 19 March 1448 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 228r).
  • 212. Probably the priest Robert Sherrington (Sheryngton), of the church of Holy Trinity the Less, in the cemetery of which he requested burial. By his will and codicil of 6 January 1447, proved 30 May [no year given], he left the large sum of 26s 8d to Thomas the parish clerk for his funeral and exequies (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 211v).
