  • 1. The names of masters at the head of the entries for this year were originally written in the margin but have been trimmed away by a later binder. Only the -hes and -hos of the Christian names remain. The masters are known however from the charter of 1449. John Hunt the senior master was still alive in 1452, when he is named as a trustee for property of the clerks in deeds no longer extant (Christie, p 88). He appears among deaths for 1456 (46). Thomas Denley, late saddler, was granted his request to be admitted to the freedom of the City as a parish clerk in 1444 (Calendar of letter-books of the City of London, ed RR Sharpe (1899–1912), Book K, p 296). He is among deaths for 1459 (60).
  • 2. Citizen and draper, with property at St Bartholomew's Priory, and in the parishes of St Martin Ludgate and St Mary le Bow. In his will of 24 September, proved 10 October, 1448, Wyatt asked to be buried in the church of the Greyfriars if he died in London (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 244v). His wife named there as Margaret is probably the individual of that name among deaths for 1454 (37).
  • 3. Presumably the rector of St Michael Queenhithe 1431–48 (Hennessy, pp 249 and cxiv). He left a will of 26 July, proved 27 July, 1448 (PROB 11/3, f. 286v).
  • 4. A John Hoton, originally of York diocese, was ordained subdeacon on 23 September, and deacon 23 December, 1396 on the title of St Bartholomew's Hospital (Davis, 10098). He may be identifiable with the chantry chaplain of this name at All Hallows Barking in 1436 (Thrupp, p 386).
  • 5. A Robert Burnham, originally of Canterbury diocese, was ordained acolyte 22 May 1445, subdeacon 12 March, and deacon 11 June, 1446, and priest 3 June 1447, all on the title of Southwark Priory (Davis, 15801).
  • 6. John Steward, Kt, requested burial in the church of All Hallows Staining by his will of 10 May 1448, proved 6 July 1449 (Lambeth Palace Library: Register Stafford f. 174r). A monument to him and his wife Alice, who is among admissions before 1449 (1) and deaths for 1456 (48), was erected there (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, 1, 204).
  • 7. Thomas Haseley, Kt, of Westminster, who died 11 June 1449. He was Clerk of the Commons in Parliament 1414–40 and secondary clerk of the Crown in Chancery 1415–49. He requested burial within St Anne's chapel in the church of the Crutched Friars, London and left bequests of 40s to both the parish clerks' and Pappey frater- nities by his will of 23 May, proved 16 July, 1449 (Lambeth Palace Library: Register Stafford f. 174r).   • 16. Perhaps the William Ryder (Rider), citizen and fishmonger, who requested burial in the church of St Mary at Hill by his will of 4 September 1449, proved (?)5 June 1450 (PROB 11/3, f. 254v). He left 6d to the parish clerk and chaplain who attended his exequies there.
  • 17. Parishioner of St Faith by St Paul who left a will (no probate) of 20 September 1450 and asked for burial in the charnel chapel of St Paul's cemetery (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 14v). Identifiable as a stationer (Christianson). His wife was named Margaret and she also appears among deaths for 1450 (29). Cook left 12d to Edward Chamber, parish clerk of St Faith, who appears among admissions before 1449 (9) and deaths for 1474 (167).
  • 18. Possibly the citizen and brewer of this name, of All Hallows Staining, who wished to be buried in the parish cemetery. He left a will (no probate) of 28 September 1450 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 15r).
  • 19. A draper and common councilman, Lyffyn requested burial in St Michael Cornhill by his will of 4 August, proved 29 November, 1450 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 19v). One of four individuals empowered to receive contributions for the roofing of Guildhall Chapel in 1447 (CLRO: Corporation Journal 4, f. 193: entry for 26 September). His wife Margaret, co-executor of his will, later married Richard Alley, alderman, and appears among admissions and deaths for 1487 (281, 286).
  • 20. Lawrence Springer, citizen and cheesemonger, of St Peter Cornhill. In his will of 13 October, proved 17 November, 1450 he left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 17r). His wives Katherine (deaths before 1448 (23)) and Emmott (deaths for 1471 (139)) also appear on BR.
  • 21. Possibly the John Bartlett (Bartelott), citizen and netter, who requested burial in the church of St Michael Queenhithe, by his will of 16 November 1446, proved 10 December 1450, in which he left 12d to each of the parish clerks there (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 20v). He was assessed on London property worth £5 for the lay subsidy of 1436 (Thrupp, p 378).
  • 22. Various kinsmen of Hugh Wyche, alderman, who is among admissions before 1449 (12) and deaths for 1469 (123), were named William (Thrupp, p 375).
  • 23. Perhaps the wife of the Master John Tregraham who is among deaths for 1470 (130). In his will of 13 December 1469, proved 5 February 1470, where he appears as John Treguran, Margaret is mentioned as his late wife (PROB 11/5, f. 225v). She had been buried in the church of St Thomas the Apostle on the right of the high altar.
  • 24. Probably the wife of Henry Purchas, citizen and grocer, among admissions before 1449 (12) and deaths for 1455 (43). His deceased wife Christina is mentioned in his will of 17 (?)August 1455, proved 5 May 1456, as having been buried in the church of St Olave Southwark (PROB 11/4, f. 43v).
  • 25. Probably the widow of John Baron, tallowchandler. By his will of 16 November 1436, enrolled 25 January 1448 (Husting Roll 176 (9), ed Sharpe Calendar of wills, II, 514), he had left a bequest to the parish clerks' fraternity and to his wife Lucy all his lands and tenements in the suburbs of the City for life.
  • 26. Wife of John Gloucester (alias Killingworth), citizen and organ maker who is among deaths for 1451 (30). She is noted as deceased in his will of 26 October 1450 and had been buried in the cemetery of St Paul's (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 26r)
  • 27. Presumably the Margaret who is named as wife of Edmund Cook (Cokke) above (29), parishioner of St Faith by St Paul, in his will. She requested burial in the Holmes chapel at St Paul's and left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 34v).
  • 28. Second of the three wives of John Mynne, citizen and skinner, who is among deaths for 1451 (30). Emory was buried in the choir of St Margaret Pattens before the high altar, according to his will of 16 December 1451, proved 12 May 1452 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 59v).
  • 29. Probably the first wife of the John Bracy who is among deaths for 1470 (130). He established an obit for his wife Margaret in the church of St Mary Woolchurch Haw by his will of 10 June 1467, enrolled 19 May 1477 (Husting Roll 207 (13), ed Sharpe, Calendar of wills, II, 575) which was also to benefit other family members.
  • 30. Alderman c1436–50 and goldsmith. He was killed during Cade's insurrection on 6 July 1450 (Beaven, II, 8).
  • 31. Widow, of St Benet Paul's Wharf, who requested burial in the cemetery of St Gregory, where her late husband Robert was interred, by her will of 1 April 1451 proved 22 October 1452 [recte ?1451] (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 24r). Robert Bunting was probably the parish clerk of St Benet Paul's Wharf whose nuncupative will was proved 28 July 1447 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 214r). His name does not, however, appear on BR.
  • 32. William Branktre, citizen and fishmonger, and parishioner of St Mary Magdalen Old Fish Street, (although he requested burial in the church of the Blackfriars). He left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 26 July 1451, proved later in that year (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 27v).
  • 33. John Gloucester (alias Killingworth), citizen and organ maker, left a will of 26 October 1450, proved 15 July [1451] (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 26r). He wished to be buried in the cemetery of St Paul's with his late wife Cecily, who is among deaths for 1450 (29), and to have the legend 'patrona organorum chori Sancti Pauli london' inscribed on his tomb. He was also a member of the Holy Trinity fraternity at St Botolph, Aldersgate, noted in the years 1443–6 (Basing, Parish Fraternity Register. 46, 49). Later members of this family probably also appear on BR.
  • 34. Probably the John Joutes, tailor, who requested burial in the church of St Martin Outwich. He left a will of 10 November, proved 15 November, 1451 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 45r). His wife Ellen is mentioned there, and an Ellen Joutes (Jowttys/Jotis) is among admissions before 1449 (9) and deaths for 1462 (75)
  • 35. John Mynne (Myn), citizen and skinner. He wished to be buried in St Margaret Pattens next to his second wife Emory or Emery, who is among deaths for 1450 (29), according to his will of 16 December 1451, proved 12 May 1452 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 59r). By this time he was married again, and his third wife Joan acted as his executrix (a first wife Alice is also mentioned). Mynne left 40d to the parish clerks of this church for attendance at his obsequies and 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity for attendance at his dirige and requiem, in addition to bequests to the Skinners' Corpus Christi fraternity.
  • 36. Probably the John Langton, citizen and salter, who requested burial in the greater cemetery of St Paul's (although a parishioner of St Vedast) by his will of 20 March, proved 3 April, 1452 (PROB 11/1, f. 85v). His wife Joan is mentioned there, and a Joan Langton is also among admissions before 1449 (18), and deaths for 1475 (178).
  • 37. William Edersey was a trustee of parish clerks' property in 1452 and 1461 (Christie, p 88).
  • 38. A trustee of parish clerks' property in 1452 (Christie, p 88). The William Clerk among deaths for 1492 (322) is probably too late for identification with the above master.
  • 39. Probably Stephen Mandeville, yeoman, of St Mary Somerset, where he wished to be buried in the cemetery. In his will of 5 October, proved 11 November, 1452 he left 6s 8d to Thomas Fitzjohn, parish clerk of this church (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 71r).
  • 40. Presumably Ralph Holland, alderman c 1435–44, and master of the Taylors in 1419 (Beaven, II, 8). He left 6s 8d to each of the parish clerks of St Mary Aldermary and All Hallows Bread Street by his will of 1 May, codicil 13, proved 22 May, 1452 (PROB 11/1, f. 81r). His deceased wife Maud is mentioned there and a Maud Holland (Holande) is among deaths before 1448 (24).
  • 41. Alderman 1437–52; MP London 1447 (Beaven, II, 8). A stockfishmonger, who left a will of 25 May, with codicil of 2 June, 1452, proved 21 July in the same year (PROB 11/1, f. 132v). William Coombes requested burial in the church of St George Botolph Lane and left 12d to the parish clerk there.
  • 42. Thomas Ostrich, citizen and haberdasher, with property in the parishes of St Alban Wood Street and St Mary Magdalen Milk Street. He asked for burial in the former church and left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for him in his will of 29 March 1452, proved 20 January [1453] (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 132v). See also his son Thomas Ostrich (Osteryche), admitted in 1459 (57), and Agnes Ostrich (Ostryche), among deaths for 1459 (60).
  • 43. Perhaps the gentleman of this name, who left a will of 16 April 1453, enrolled 25 November 1453, settling his land and tenements (Hustings Roll 182 (10), ed Sharpe, Calendar of wills, II, 523).
  • 44. Entered again under deaths for 1453 (33). Walter Dawtry, chaplain of St Vedast, where he requested burial by the codicil (26 October 1451) to his will of 20 October 1451, proved 13 June 1453 (Lambeth Palace Library: Register Stafford, ff. 289v, 302v). He left 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity for the increase of their alms in return for attendance at his obsequies.
  • 45. A John Major appears among the list of clerks who died before 1454 (34).
  • 46. Gentleman, of St Stephen Coleman Street. In his will of 17 September 1452 (no probate), Westmorland left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 71v).
  • 47. Perhaps the John Richmond, citizen and sheather. who requested burial with his ancestors in the cemetery of the Blackfriars (although a parishioner of St Martin Ludgate) by his will of 7 December, proved 20 December, 1452 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 76v). His wife Katherine acted as his co-executor, and a Katherine Richmond appears among admissions before 1449 (20) and deaths for 1466 (109).
  • 48. Presumably his name was crossed through in error, as his wife Margaret has two entries and the scribe should have deleted one of these.
  • 49. Parish clerk of St Nicholas Acon. Henry Smith appears among deaths for 1458 (54). Only the probate of his will survives at length which was granted to his widow Elizabeth on 20 September 1458 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 257r). This chronology is confirmed by the fact that he appears as a trustee of parish clerks' property in 1446 and 1452, while his name no longer occurs on 23 September 1461 (Christie, pp 87–8).

  • 51. A John Lane, citizen and fuller, of All Hallows the Great, left a will of 10 May, proved 17 May, 1453 (Guildhall MS 171/5, f. 93r).

Petronella Saint, widow of Saint de Giles, citizen and tailor, requested burial next to his tomb in St Mary Woolnoth by her will of 7 December 1453, proved 7 January 1454 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 122v). She left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity along with 40d to each of the parish clerks at the above church.
  • 54. This was an attempt to compile a separate table of deceased parish clerks. Some of the entries overlap with those in the earlier list of deaths up to 1448 which had orig- inally been intended to encompass all members of the fraternity. Identifications have only been added in footnotes here if the individuals concerned have not appeared earlier in the text of the MS. The terminus ad quem of 1454 is provided by the next chronological entry for the death of a parish clerk, that of Walter Shelley, who died between 29 May, and 31 July, 1454 (see Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 130v) and appears among the entries between Ascension Day 1454 (30 May) and 1455 (15 May) on BR (37). Interspersed amongst the clerks at the end however, are a number of the ordinary laity. Double lines in the text indicate where the different hands for later entries begin and end. Christie notes (pp 31–2) that these correspond to the hands for the years 1449–53.

  • 58. A grant of administration relating to a John Mallam (Mallum) who had died intes- tate is recorded on 11 October 1435 (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 441r).
  • 59. Parish clerk of St Botolph Billingsgate. He asked to be buried in the cemetery there next to his [late] wife Isobel, leaving 20d to the parish clerks' fraternity and 4d to each of its wardens in his will of 20 January 1443 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 112v). His wife in 1443 was named Margaret.
  • 60. A William Clench, described only as 'citizen', of St James Garlickhithe, left a will of 17 March, proved 2 April, 1445 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 160r).
  • 61. Presumably the Robert Covert of St Faith who requested burial in the cloister of the Pardon churchyard of St Paul's next to his late wife Maud by his will of 29 January, proved 15 February, 1449, and who left his best brass pot to the parish clerks' fraternity (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 245v). He is mistakenly described as a servant in the Index to the Testamentary Records in the Commissary Court of London, I, 1374–1488, ed M Fitch (HMC Joint Publications, 12). In fact, he was apparently a parish or choir clerk as he made bequests from the salary owed to him by the rector of his church for 'dominica servicia'.
  • 62. Parish clerk of St Bride, in the nave of which he requested burial. He left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity and another 3s 4d to clerks coming to sing the mass of the Virgin on the day of his burial by his will of 16 April 1447, proved 8 May 1449 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 259r). Also a textwriter, Hatfield was admitted to the freedom of the City as a parish clerk in 1444 (Calendar of the letter-books of the City of London, ed RR Sharpe, Book K, p 296). He had been a trustee of the parish clerks' property in 1446, indicating that he was a senior member of the fraternity, and is noted as deceased in another (now destroyed) deed of 1452 (Christie, pp 87–8).
  • 63. John Eston alias Coyfote, citizen and clerk, of St Michael Queenhithe, in the ceme- tery of which church he wished to be buried. His will of 23 November 1449, proved sometime later in that year (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 277v) mentions his late wife Maud Eston, who appears among deaths before 1448 (25).
  • 64. Noted as a recently deceased trustee of parish clerks' property in a deed of 1452, now destroyed (Christie, p 88).
  • 65. The final entries including that for Quadring, appear to be for ordinary laity, not clerks. Robert Quadring, citizen and stationer, requested burial in the cemetery of St Anne and St Agnes in his will (no probate) of 21 March 1452 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 49r). His wife Denise who acted as his executrix died in December 1453 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 121v) and is among admissions before 1449 (8).
  • 66. Perhaps the John Stratton who appears among deaths for 1452 (32).
  • 67. Perhaps the John Green admitted before 1449 (15) and among deaths for 1463 (83). He was named as a trustee of parish clerks' property in 1452 and 1461 (Christie, p 88).
  • 68. This is the first year in which admissions of living brothers and sisters of the frater- nity (fratrum et sororum vivorum) are listed with the names of those who died (defunctorum) under the same masters.
  • 69. Among deaths for 1462 (75). The name is unusual and so he can probably be iden- tified with the parishioner of St Nicholas Cole Abbey who requested burial in this church according to his will of 10 February, proved 20 February, 1462 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 321v).
  • 70. Among deaths for 1474 (169). A draper living in Cripplegate in 1436, Worsop served as a common councilman for Cordwainer ward c1462 and died in 1474 (Tucker). His will of 8 April, proved 5 August, 1474 mentions property in the parish of St Mary le Bow (he wished to be buried in the church there) and Ingates- tone, Essex (PROB 11/6, f. 120v). It refers to his wife Joan, who is probably the Joan Worsop (Worsopp) among admissions for 1462 (77).
  • 71. Among deaths for 1469 (including entries for 1468) on BR (123). A John Kendal, citizen and pewterer, of St Mildred Poultry, left a will of 21 June, proved 23 July, 1468 (PROB 11/5, f. 185v).
  • 72. Among deaths for 1476 (187). Identifiable with John Forster, skinner and common councilman for Walbrook c1462, who died in 1476 (Tucker). By his will of 22 March, proved 30 July, 1476 he asked to be buried at St Stephen Walbrook and left 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity for attendance at his burial 'as they owe to doo a Brothere of theirs' (PROB 11/6, f. 178r).
  • 73. Either 'n' or 'yn' is signified by the contraction in the text. The latter seems more likely.
  • 74. Among deaths for 1475 (177). In his will of 9 October, proved 29 October, 1474, William Aylmer, citizen and grocer, requested burial in the chancel of St Clement Eastcheap and left a 'towell of drapere' to the parish clerks' fraternity (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 164r). John Aylmer, his brother, is mentioned there as parson of St Clement Eastcheap and also appears (84, 368) on BR.
  • 75. Perhaps the William Rotherley (Rotheley), goldsmith and common councilman for Farringdon Within c1462 who died in 1464 (Tucker) and requested burial in Dart- ford parish church (PROB 11/5, f. 39r).
  • 76. Among deaths for 1475 (177). William Abell is probably the London limner and stationer of this name who died in 1474 (see Christianson). Active in these trades from 1446, Abell served as churchwarden of St Nicholas Shambles in 1452 and 1470 and is named as a co-executor of his fellow churchwarden John James who is also on BR (100, 147) in the latter's will of 15 May 1471 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 78r).

  • 78. Margaret Hawkins (Haukyn) appears among deaths for 1456 (48). She is named in the will of Thomas Hawkins (Hawkyn), grocer, of St Antholin, dated 16 January, proved 16 May, 1455 as his wife and executrix (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 146v, PROB 11/4, f. 11r), and he is apparently listed among deaths for 1454 (37). She subsequently married George Ireland (46, 169), and as his widow left a nuncupative will of 14 November 1456, proved 10 January 1457 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 206r).
  • 79. Joan Hatherley, the second wife of John Hatherley, alderman, who appears among admissions before 1449 (14) and deaths for 1462 (75) on BR. She is mentioned as deceased in his will of 12 April 1459 (Husting Roll 195 (44) ed Sharpe, Calendar of wills, II, 552) and appears among the list of deaths below in 1454 (37).

  • 86. Probably the Thomas Hawkins, citizen and grocer, of St Antholin, who requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Leonard Eastcheap (where his late wife Joan was buried) if he died in London. He left 10s to each priest and clerk in the church where he was interred to sing placebo, dinge and requiem mass by note in his will of 16 January 1455 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 146v) which was proved 16 May 1455 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PROB 11/4, f. 11r) His wife Margaret is mentioned there and a Margaret Hawkins appears among admissions for 1454 (36) and deaths for 1456 (48).
  • 87. A William West, citizen and marbler, of St Peter's churchyard, Goswell Street and St Botolph Aldersgate, left a will of 17 July 1451, proved 5 September 1454 (Guild- hall MS 9171/5, f. 138v) and various deeds of gift by him between 1442 and 1453 are enrolled in the Court of Husting (ed Sharpe, Calendar of wills, II, 527, 550, 552, 562).
  • 88. Possibly the wife of John Wyatt (Wyot), citizen and draper (among deaths for 1448 (26)) who refers to his wife Margaret in his will of 24 September, proved 10 October, 1448 (Guildhall MS 9171/4, f. 244v).
  • 89. Possibly the wife of Walter Lucy, citizen and haberdasher (among additional deaths for 1462 and 1463 (89)), who mentions his late wife Agnes as being interred in St Paul's churchyard in his will of 23 May 1462 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 336r).
  • 90. Appears among additional deaths for 1462 and 1463 (89). In 1459 he acted as exec- utor of the will of John Dalton of St Peter Cornhill (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 245v) and in 1461 he was a trustee of parish clerks' property (Christie, p 88).
  • 91. Harrington appears among deaths for 1474 (167).
  • 92. Entries in italics within the main text are written in a separate hand and appear to have been added later as they appear at the end of specific sections.
  • 93. The admission of so great a number of clerks in one year (25), many of whose deaths are not recorded on the manuscript later, may be an indication that the numbers have been substantially boosted by ecclesiastical singers (lay clerks of the Chapel Royal or other ecclesiastical establishments). Such 'choir clerks' were clas- sified along with parish clerks on BR, but the lack of reference to their deaths, where verifiable from other sources, suggest that their membership was rarely maintained. Walter Fry is apparently an example of such choir clerks (see below).
  • 94. An Andrew Sutton', clerk, is noted among the quarterage accounts of the Trinity guild of St Botolph Aldgate in 1443–5 (Basing, Parish Fraternity Register, 46).
  • 95. Probably the John Gilling of Turnagam Lane, with property at Lisson and Hamp- stead, Middlesex, who was parish clerk of St Sepulchre, Newgate, where he requested burial in the Lady chapel. He left a will of 13 September 1473, proved 16 October 1475 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 133r), which mentions his wife Margaret, but his death is not recorded on BR.

  • 99. Among deaths for 1471 (137). Possibly the Thomas Baker who requested burial in the church of St Lawrence Jewry whose vicar, Richard Luke, acted as overseer of his will of 12 November 1469, proved 5 June 1470, and whose wife was named Elizabeth (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 60r). An Elizabeth Baker is among the clerks' wives admitted in 1466 (106).
  • 100. Among deaths for 1457 (as Waltherwayt) (53). He is identifiable with Robert Wallerthwaite (Wallaxthwayte), parish unknown, the probate of whose will was granted to his widow Margaret on 6 September 1457 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 226r).
  • 101. Probably identifiable with the composer of this name. The latter left a will of 12 August 1474, proved 5 June 1475 (PROB 11/6, f. 141v), where he is linked to St Gregory by St Paul's, All Hallows the Less and Chertsey, Surrey. Fry was a member of the household chapel of Anne, Duchess of Exeter, as Anne paid him an annuity at least between 1464 and 1472 and her household treasurer acted as one of his executors (New Grove Dictionary).
  • 102. Perhaps identifiable with the William Daventry among deaths for 1467 (115) William Dawtre, parish clerk, requested burial in the church or cemetery of St Mildred Bread Street by his will of 19 December 1467, proved 2 April [1468] (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 26r). He may well be the William Dawtre of London, clerk, mentioned in the will of his father Walter Dawtry, chaplain, among deaths for 1452 and 1453 (31, 33). His two sons John and Thomas and his wife Joan are mentioned there. Among the bequests of goods and chattels he left a psalter to John. Joan survived him, and is probably the Joan Daventry among the clerks' wives admitted in 1467 (112).
  • 103. Among deaths for 1467 (115). William Packer (Paker/Pakere) was parish clerk of St Lawrence Jewry, who left a nuncupative will of 23 December 1467, proved 25 January 1468. He requested burial in the same church and left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 32).
  • 104. This cannot be the Thomas Humberston who was senior master of the fraternity in 1459, as the Humberston entered here could not have progressed to such high office in so short a time. He may however, be another member of the same family as the surname is uncommon among clerks.

  • 110. Among deaths for 1456 (48). Perhaps the William Swan (Swanne), rector of St Martin in the Vintry, who resigned in 1456 (Hennessy, p 335).
  • 111. Among deaths for 1455 (43). Perhaps the rector of St Mary Abchurch in whose will of 10 September 1452, proved 1 August 1455, he left 4d to every parish clerk present at his dirige (PROB 11/4, f. 36v). However, another John Stephens (Stevyns) was a 'poor priest' of the Chapel Royal in 1455 (D Baldwin, The Chapel Royal Ancient and Modern (1990), Appendix II).
  • 112. A Master Thomas Potysmor or Posmor had proceeded BA 1449 and MA 1454 at Oxford (Emden, BRUO to 1500).

  • 115. Among deaths for 1469 (including entries for 1468) (123). Probably the John Bolton of St Margaret New Fish Street whose widow Alice was granted administra- tion of his estate on 26 August 1468 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 27v). An Alice Bolton was admitted with John in 1455 (42).
  • 116. Among deaths for 1467 (115). John Norris senior, citizen and skinner, requested burial in the church of St Stephen Walbrook. He left 10s for the support of the parish clerks' fraternity in return for their attendance at his funeral and other serv- ices for the health of his soul 'as their comen usage is for their brethren' in his will of 21 January, proved 8 May, 1468 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 23r). If the Margaret Norris (Noreyse) admitted with him (42) was his wife, she was dead before 1468 as his wife then is named as Isobel.
  • 117. Among deaths for 1471 (138). Perhaps the John Windsor alias Mille, citizen and baker, who requested burial in St Benet Gracechurch by his will of 26 February, proved 14 March, 1471 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 79r).
  • 118. Among deaths for 1480 (222). Perhaps the John Thomas, citizen and brewer, of St Anne and St Agnes who wished to be buried in the chancel of this church. John Thomas's will of 3 January 1476, proved 30 November 1479, (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 276v) mentions his wife Elinor who had a son, John Falconer (Fawkener). An Elinor Falconer (Fauconere) appears among admissions for 1457 (52) and (as Elinor Thomas) among deaths for 1501 (397). See also Guildhall MS 9168/1, f. 166r for a reference to the executor of Elinor Fawkoner, widow, of St Mary Woolnoth in 1500.
  • 119. Among deaths for 1481 (229). Robert Colwich was master of the Taylors 1460, City chamberlain 1463–74, alderman 1474–80 and sheriff 1475; he died childless in 1480 (Beaven, II, 15). In his will of 5 October, proved 17 November, 1480, he left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity and 13s 4d to the Pappey guild to pray for his soul (PROB 11/7, f. 6r).
  • 120. Among deaths for 1480 (222) Lawrence Wilkinson, citizen and vintner, requested burial in the chapel of St Luke within St Nicholas Shambles, and left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' and Pappey fraternities respectively in his will of 2 August, proved 11 August, 1479 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 266r)

Probably the Thomas Mayre (Mayr) senior, citizen and brewer, who requested burial in St Andrew Undershaft where his wife Joan was interred by his will of 29 November 1465, proved 24 March 1466 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 381r). A Joan Mayr (Mayer) was admitted with Thomas in 1455 (42).
  • 124. Among deaths for 1458 (54). Thomas Holy, citizen and leatherseller, of St Michael Bassishaw, in which church he asked to be buried with his late wife Alice. He left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul by his will of 20 May, proved 22 September, 1458 (PROB 11/4, f. 189v).
  • 125. Among deaths for 1480 (222). Probably the William Collington (Colyngton), citizen and brewer, who requested burial in the churchyard of St Andrew Under- shaft by his will of 7 October, proved 18 November, 1479 (Guildhall MS 9171//6, f. 275v). John Buttrey (Bottre), parish clerk of St Matthew Friday Street (105, 347, 440) was the overseer.

Welwick is named as the parish clerk of St Michael Bassishaw in William Andrew's will of 1458 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 257v) but died intestate in 1470 when a grant of administration is recorded (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 49v). His wife Christina is among admissions for 1456 below (47).
  • 137. Senior master in 1465 (96); among deaths for 1469 (123).
  • 138. Either this Thomas Worley or another clerk of this name admitted in 1465 (98) may be identical with the gentleman of the Chapel Royal whom Professor Andrew Wathey has traced in 1463 (E 101/411/13, f. 36) and was granted a property 'Le Lambe' in Distaff Lane, London, for life in 1465 (Calendar of Patent Rolls 1461–1467, p 437), before dying in 1500. He resided at Upton, Bucks according to his will of 15 April, proved 11 December, 1500 (PROB 11/12, f. 95v). His wife Katherine, survived him, and acted as his executrix.   • 141. Among deaths for 1465 (102). John Fleet, Prior of Westminster, was admitted to the Abbey in 1420–1 and died between Michaelmas 1465–6, probably in 1466 (Pearce, p 137). The entry on BR allows us to assume that he died before Ascension Day 1466.
  • 142. Among deaths for 1472 (145). Richard Brent (Breynt), monk of Westminster, admitted there in the year Michaelmas 1421–2, treasurer 1456–61 and bailiff 1456–c1461, died 1471–2, probably in 1472 (Pearce, p 139). Allowing for the custom of recording deaths one year behind their actual occurrence on BR from 1470, we can now narrow the date of his death down to the period before Ascension Day 1472.
  • 143. Perhaps the William Brewster who was rector of St Nicholas Shambles 1435–8, prebendary of Neasden in St Paul's 1442–65 and a canon of Windsor 1432–7 and 1439–65 who was dead by 2 November 1465 (Fasti, p 50). He requested burial in the Holmes chapel at St Paul's by his will of 1 July, proved 19 November, 1465 (PROB 11/5, f. 82v). His death is not recorded on BR.
  • 144. Possibly the rector of St Bartholomew by the Exchange 1451–67, when he resigned (Hennessy, pp 280, xxvi, assumes a complete identity with others of this name). A Master John Pemberton was prebendary of Caddington Major in St Paul's 1472–5 (Fasti, p 24).
  • 145. As Magister Thomas Faux, rector, he is among deaths for 1459 (60). Thomas Fawkes was rector of St Bride by 1436 (Thrupp, p 386) until 1459 (Hennessy, pp 113, lxx). By his will of 5 December 1458, proved 19 September 1459 (PROB 11/4, f. 127r) he left a bequest to his chaplain, Stephen Proctor, admitted with him (45).
  • 146. Among deaths for 1474 (164). James Alverley was rector of St Michael Crooked Lane 1446–74, when he died (Hennessy, pp 78, 277).
  • 147. Among deaths for 1492 (322). Haydyffe was originally from York diocese and was ordained priest on 27 February 1437 to a Southwark title (Davis, 42744). He was vicar of St Dunstan in the West 1439–92 (Hennessy, p 137).
  • 148. Among deaths for 1463 (83). Proctor was chaplain of St Bride's and left a will of 11 July, proved 6 August, 1463 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 343v). He was admitted with his rector Thomas Fawkes, above (45). Probably identifiable with the indi- vidual of this name from York diocese who was ordained deacon in London diocese on 8 March 1438 on the title of Lesnes Abbey (Davis).
  • 149. Among deaths for 1464 (94). Thomas Charlton, Kt, requested burial in the chancel of Edmonton church, Middlesex, although he also left 6s 8d to the fabric of St Mary Aldermanbury by his will of 26 February, proved 29 March, 1465 (PROB 11/5, f. 60r). His wife's name is not mentioned there but she is perhaps the Benedicta Charlton (Charleton) among the lay wives admitted in 1456 (47).
  • 150. Alderman 1456–71; KB 1465; a draper (Beaven, II, 11; Thrupp p 333). Thomas Cook left a will of 15 April, proved 1 June, 1478 (PROB 11/6, f. 280r) although his death is not recorded on BR. His wife Elizabeth is mentioned there and an Elizabeth Cook (Coke) was admitted with Thomas in 1456 (47).

  • 154. His death is not recorded on BR. However he may be identifiable with the Edmund Rygon, citizen and draper, who requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Michael Cornhill by his late wife Joan's grave in his will of 19 January, proved 28 February, 1484 (PROB 11/7, f. 166r) as a Joan Rygon is also among admissions for 1455 (42).

Among deaths for 1473 (as Agnes Horcy) (158) Agnes Hercy, widow, relict of Walter Hercy, citizen and haberdasher, requested burial before St Hilda's altar in St Michael le Querne where her late husband was buried by her will of 14 May, proved 2 November, 1472 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 113r) He appears among deaths for 1466 (109) and Agnes is mentioned in his will in which he left money to the parish clerks (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 387v).
  • 160. Thomas Liseux (Lyseux) was rector of St Michael Cornhill 1433–47 and canon of St George's Windsor 1435–42 (he appears as Lysour when rector of St Michael's in 1436: see Thrupp, p 387). He advanced to become dean of St Paul's 1441–56 and Keeper of the Privy Seal 1452–6. He was dead by 17 October 1456 (Fasti, p 6). By his will of 29 November 1450, proved 17 October 1456, Liseux requested burial in the Jesus Chapel of St Paul's (PROB 11/4, f. 56v).
  • 161. Richard Corston was rector of St Olave Hart Street 1444–57 and died before 11 May in the latter year (Hennessy, pp 356, cxlv). He left a will of 5 April 1457, proved 10 March 1460 by which he requested burial within St Olave's (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 209r).
  • 162. Nicholas Wifolde, alderman 1442–56 and mayor 1450; master of the Grocers 1443 and 1451. He requested burial at the north end of the high altar of St Antholin by his (incomplete) will of 22 June 1456 (PROB 11/4, f. 59r). See Thrupp, p 376 and Beaven, II, 9.
