Lund and North Cave. A capital messsuage, lands, rent, a market &c. at Lund, and rents at North Cave (extent given), held of Sir Henry de Percy by knight’s service.
Octon and Swathorp. A capital messuage, lands, rent &c. at Octon, and rent at Swathorp (extent given), held of Peter de Malo Lacu by knight’s service.
Kilton, Thorp, Brotton, Skynnergreve, Lofthous, Lyverton. Hilderwell, Lyttelmoresom and Mikelmoresom. Certain tenements, rents &c. (extents given), including a decayed manor at Kilton, held of Sir Henry de Percy by knight’s service.
Lythum. The manor, together with rents &c. in Cotum (extent given), held of Sir Henry de Percy by knight’s service.
He held no other lands &c. except in co. Westmoreland.
His brother, Robert de Twenge, parson of the church of Warton, aged 40 years and more, is his next heir.
WESTMORELAND. Inq. Saturday, the feast of St. Hilary, 14 Edward III (defaced).
Helsyngton. The manor, with certain lands and tenements belonging thereto in Kirkeby in Kendale, Crossetwayt, Stavelay, Sapgill, Hogill, Resperton, Gresmere and Langedene (extents given with names of pastures &c.), including a park at Stavelay, held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a moiety of three parts of a knight’s fee, and by doing suit at the county(court) of Westmoreland every month.

Writ to the escheator to take into the king‘s hand all the lands &c. of which the said William de Twenge was seised, which do not appear in the inquisitions lately returned into the chancery, and to make an extent both of them and of the lands &c. formerly returned; 14 February, 15 Edward III.

A messuage, 40a. land in demesne, 2a. meadow and 10l. assised rent, parcels of the manor of Grafton, held jointly with Maud his wife, who survives; which manor is held of the king in chief by serjeanty, viz.—keeping a white brachet with red ears for the king, for what time is unknown, to them and the heirs of the said John, by fine levied in the court of King Edward II, as his charter of licence testifies.
Tichemersh. 46s. 8d. assised rent, to be received yearly from divers free tenants, held jointly with the said Maud, to them and their heirs, of Sir John Lovel, knight, by service of a rose yearly.
Irtlingeburgh. 100s. assised rent held jointly in the same manner, to them and the heirs male of the said John, of Alan de Sancto Mauro, service unknown.

The said Geoffrey, seven years ago, made a charter of feoffment of the said manor to Henry his son and heir, but always remained in the said manor, and took the profit to his own use, and died seised thereof.
Hareworth. A capital messuage, lands, a windmill and 10s. 6 1/2d. rent held of Gerard de Segynton, by service of 1d. yearly.

282. JACOBA, THIRD OF THE DAUGHTERS AND HEIRS OF RICHARD DE EMELDEN, deceased, who held of the king in chief.
[NORTHUMBERLAND.] Proof of age, taken at Newcastle upon Tyne, 16 February, 14 Edward III (fragment).
Adam Graper, aged 44 years, says that the said Jacoba was born on 23 March, 18 Edward II, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and was baptized in the church of St. Nicholas there, and Lawrence de Dunelm’, Margaret de Castro Bernardi, and Joan Moubrey lifted her from the sacred font, and that she was of the age of 15 years and more on the 23 March last; which he knows because, on 30 March, 18 Edward II, the news was brought to Richard de Emelden, father of the said Jacoba, by a letter from Christiana his wife to the said Richard at London, on what day, as aforesaid, the said Jacoba was born; and the said letter was read and heard in the presence of the said Adam who was there.
John de Carliolo, aged 50 years and more, says the like, and knows it, because he went after the said Margaret and Joan, to lift the said Jacoba from the sacred font.
William Russell, aged 56 years, says the like, and knows it because, on 30 March, [18] Edward II, the said Jacoba, lying in her cradle, had of the gift of the said William 40d. of silver, and the said Jacoba has completed the age of 15 years, as he has well computed with Christiana her mother.
Adam Page, aged 58 years, says the like, and knows it because Lawrence de Dunelm’ … on the 23rd March, on which the said Jacoba was born and baptized, as he came from the church of St. Nicholas, …… something wonderful to him, because he called the said Jacoba by a man’s name (nomine virili), since it was not …… more.
…… [aged] 40 years and more, says [the like], and knows it, because Sir Nicholas, the chaplain, …… on 23 March, on which, as above, she was born, and on the same day …… afterwards they computed likewise that she is 15 years of age.

283. JOHN LE BOTILLER.
Writ of certiorari to the escheator in cos. Lincoln &c.
Whereas he certified the king that because it was given him to understand that John le Botiller, deceased, son of Ralph le Botiller of Northbury, knight, held certain lands and tenements in Wilkesby, Holtham, Cunnyngesby and Enderby, co. Lincoln, of the gift of the said Ralph, of the king in chief, by knight’s service, he took the same into the king’s hand, after the said John’s death, and for no other cause; and the aforesaid Ralph has given the king to understand that the said John had no estate in the same, except at the said Ralph’s will, and that those lands &c. are not held of the king, but of Fulk de Lysors and John Pellard, and has prayed the king to remove his hand therefrom; the king commands him to make inquiry &c. 20 November, 14 Edward III.
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Lincoln, 8 January, 14 Edward III.
Holtham, Wilkesby and Conyngesby. He did not hold these lands &c. in his demesne as of fee, on the day he died, but of the above Ralph, his father, at the will of the said Ralph.
Enderby. He held a plot of land of John, son of Thomas de Multon, of Frampton, at the will of the said Ralph, his father, of the soke of Hornecastre, by service of 4 3/4d. [yearly].
The said lands &c. in Wilkesby, Holtham and Conyngesby are held of the king in chief, by knight’s service, but for what part is unknown, and not of Fulk de Lysours and John Pellard, as by the king’s writ is supposed.

284. THOMAS, SON AND HEIR OF GRIFFIN DE GRENESTEDE or DE GRENESTUDE.
Writ to the escheator in cos. Southampton, Bedford &c. to enquire whether the said Thomas is an idiot, and whether he has alienated a great portion of his lands and tenements in Kerdyngton, co. Bedford, or not, and who is his heir &c. 11 May, 15 Edward III.
Endorsed by the escheator that he went in person to Kerdyngton and examined the said Thomas in every way he could as to his state, and that he found him of good mind and sane memory in word and deed, counting money, measuring cloth and doing all other things.
BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Kerdyngton 25 June, 15 Edward III.
The said Thomas is of good, clear and sound memory, and always was from his birth; and he never had any lands or tenements in the county, or elsewhere in the bailiwick.

OXFORD. Inq. taken at Witteneye, 27 January, 15 Edward III.
Brunesnorton. A messuage and three carucates of land (extent given), including pasture common to the town of Leuwe held jointly with Joan his wife, who still survives, to them and the heirs of the said James, of the duke of Cornwall, as of the honour of Walyngford, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Stephen de Crotebrugge, his brother, aged 50 years and more, is his next heir.
BERKS. Inq. made at Abyndon, 24 January, 15 Edward III.
Appelton. The manor (extent given), including pasture common to all the tenants of Eton, and a pasture several to the lord of the said manor and the lord of Eton, from the feast of the Annunciation to the Gule of August, and 18a. meadow by the Thames in co. Oxford, held jointly as above, by the enfeoffment of Richard de la Mote, to hold to the said James and Joan and the heirs of the said James for ever, by the king’s charter of licence dated at Westminster, 15 May, 14 Edward III, of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Toucestre, 15 January, 14 Edward III.
Gosgrave or Couesgrave. Eight messuages, lands and wood (extent given), held of the earl of Warwick, as of the manor of Hamslap, by service of 10s. yearly, and suit of court every three weeks at the said earl’s court of his manor of Hamslap; a messuage and two virgates of land, held of the duke of Cornwall, as of the honour of Berhamstud, by service of a common fine of 3d. yearly, and paying yearly to Geoffrey de Lucy, knight, 5s.; a messuage, three virgates of land, and 12a. underwood, held of the lord of Forthoo by service of 5s. 4d. yearly, and suit of court every three weeks at the court of Forthoo, and at the hundred (court) of Chell’; and seven messuages and 7a. land held of the heir of William de Cumbmartyn by service of rendering 5s. yearly at the manor of Stoke, and doing suit at the court of that manor.
Pokesle. Sixteen messuages and two virgates and a half of land held by rendering 5s. yearly at the manor of Passentham, and doing suit at the court there; an assart of 12 1/2a., called ‘le Niewestockyng,’ held of the king, service unknown; eleven messuages and two virgates of land held of Roger Leukenore by service of 5s. 6d. yearly; a messuage and a virgate of land held of the manor of Grafton by service of 5 1/4d. yearly; 1a. and a messuage held of John le Forester of Stonystratford by service of 12d. yearly; and 10a. land held of the prior of the Hospital of Jerusalem by service of 5d. yearly.
All held for life, of the gift and enfeoffment of Thomas Spigurnel, knight, by fine levied in the king’s court, with remainder to Bartholomew de Burgherssh, his brother, to hold to him and his heirs by the accustomed services for ever.
He held no lands &c. in the county in his demesne as of fee.

Great Heghtredebury, Colerne and Sterte, The manors (extents given), with the advowson of the church of Colerne, held of the king in chief by knight’s service; which manors he gave to Robert de Brok and Ralph de Staunford, clerks, to hold to them and their heirs for ever; who, by fine levied in the king’s court with his licence, granted the same to the said bishop, to hold for his life, with remainder to Bartholomew Burghersshe, his brother, and his heirs for ever The reversion of the said manors belongs to the aforesaid Bartholomew.
Writ of amotus touching the lands &c. of the said Henry, who died on 13 January last, 3 February, 15 Edward III.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Chelmesford, 13 April, 15 Edward III.
[Unspecified.] A messuage, lands and rent (extent given), held for life of the abbot of Westminster, as in socage, by service of 4l. of silver yearly, by a demise which John de Lisle, knight, who lately held those tenements in fee, made thereof to the said Henry de Burwerssh, in mortgage for 300l. of silver, to hold to the said Henry or his assigns until the said John or his attorneys should fully satisfy the said Henry or his executors for the said 300l., which are not yet paid, as is said; after which demise the said Henry enfeoffed Robert de Stanford, clerk, of the said tenements, to hold to him, his heirs and assigns, who afterwards granted the same tenements to the said Henry for his life, with remainder to Bartholomew, the said Henry’s brother, to hold to him and his heirs for ever.
The said Bartholomew, aged 36 years and more, is his next heir.
Writ of ulterius certiorari to the escheator to enquire whether the manor of Gosgrave or any part thereof is held of the king in chief as the king is informed, 25 May, 16 Edward III.
NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Northampton, 8 July, 16 Edward III.
Gosgrave. The manor is not held of the king in chief, nor any part thereof. But the said bishop died seised in his demesne as of fee of a certain assart, called ‘Spigurnelstockyng,’ in Pokysle, which is held of the king in chief by service of rendering to the king yearly at his exchequer 4d. for every acre, and it contains 10a. land.
Walter de Pavely, his kinsman, aged 25 years, is his next heir.

Yaverlonde. The manor, held for his life and that of Eleanor his wife, and to the heirs of the said Theobald, by the demise of Walter le Waleys, rector of the church of Horsynton, by a fine levied in the king’s court, of the king in chief, as of the honour of the castle of Karesbrok, by service of a knight’s fee and suit at the court of Nyweport every three weeks.
Roubergh. A messuage and 40a. land, held for the lives of himself, Eleanor his wife, and William their son, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Theobald, of the manor of Yaverlonde, by service of a thirty-second part of half a knight’s fee.
Ralph his son, aged 23 and more, is his next heir.

He held no lands &c. in the county in fee &c. on the day he died, but ten years before his death, with the king’s licence, he demised the manor of Herdwyk to Roger de …., clerk, his heirs and executors, for his life and for two years after, except the advowson of the church, rendering 1d. yearly to the said Theobald and his heirs and doing for them the services due to the king. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
