37. RALPH DE WASSINGELEE.
Writ to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer on the complaint of Thomas de Luvetot that the late escheator took into the king’s hand the lands &c. late of the said Ralph in Wassinglee, whereas the wardship of the lands and heir of the said Ralph in co. Huntingdon, with the marriage of the heir, pertains to the said Thomas because the said Ralph held of him in Wassinglee by knight’s service: they are commanded to examine the rolls of knights’ fees and report what they find, 19 February, 20 Edw. I.
HUNTINGDON. Return of the treasurer and barons (undated).
Wassingele. Having examined the rolls of the exchequer they find that the said Ralph held of the king in chief the head of a serjeanty in Wassingele, which was sometime of Robert Malenceys, for which he was bound to find 2 footmen for forty days in the army of the king’s progenitors, kings of England, in Wales to guard a small pavilion with bows and arrows, each of whom ought to have 4d. a day from the king for the same. Robert Passelewe, when he was appointed by King Henry III to rate alienated serjeanties, found the serjeanty of Wassingele wholly alienated, and one Walter de Wassingele, ancestor of the said Ralph, who then held the head of the serjeanty made fine for himself and his tenants for the alienation by 40s. yearly to be paid at the exchequer, doing to the king for the said serjeanty the service of 1/40 knight’s fee; by reason whereof the wardship and the marriage of the heir pertain to the king.
It was moreover found by an inquisition which they have caused to be made by the escheator that the said Ralph held certain lands &c. in Wassingele of Thomas de Luvetot by service of 1/2 knight’s fee.
C. Edw. I. File 63. (4.)
38. GEOFFREY DE SUTTHORP.

I.
HUNTINGDON. Inq. Monday before St. Gregory, 20 Edw. I.
Thirning. The said Geoffrey died on the eve of St. Andrew, 19 Edw. I. whereupon Gilbert de Clare earl of Gloucester put himself in seisin of the said lands &c. because the said Geoffrey held them of him in chief; and afterwards the sub-escheator in co. Huntingdon came and found by inquisition that the said Geoffrey held the said lands and tenements of the aforesaid Gilbert, but found by the same inquisition that he held in co. Northampton the manor of Loholm, which is held of the manor of Thorpel, which manor of Thorpel John de Cameys sometime held of the abbot of Peterborough: and the same John sold the manor of Torpel to Lady Eleanor, sometime the king’s consort, wherefore the sub-escheator took the aforesaid lands &c. in Thirning into the king’s hand and ejected the earl. The said lands &c. were of the inheritance of Rose (Roysia) the wife of the said Geoffrey, and the said Geoffrey held them for life by the courtesy of England.
C. Edw. I. File 63. (5.)

I.
SUFFOLK. Inq. 9 Jan. 20 Edw. I.
Little Redesham. A messuage and 80a. land held of the king in chief at fee farm rendering 29s. 8d. yearly at the hundred of Wayneford. The king’s escheator has never been accustomed to take the same into the king’s hand on the death of a tenant, but the bailiff of the said hundred has always done so, and held them until the right heir has been ascertained. Neither the king nor the said bailiff &c. ought to have relief or wardship, but the heir’s mother shall have the wardship, or some other of his kin (parentele).
C. Edw. I. File 63. (7.)
41. PETER, LATE BISHOP OF EXETER.
Writ to the escheator, on the representation of Master Andrew de Kilkenny, Master Peter de Insula, and Robert de Veteri Terra, executors of the will of the said bishop, that the wardship of the land and heir of John de Halton, who held of the same bishop by knight’s service, which pertains to them, had been taken into the king’s hand by the sub-escheator of Cornwall, and without the king’s warrant given to William le Wyse; he is commanded to resume the said wardship into the king’s hand and make enquiry &c., 20 Jan. 20 Edw. I.
CORNWALL. Inq. made in full county (court) at Lostwythiel on Monday before St. Valentine, 20 Edw. I.
John de Halton held certain lands &c. of the said bishop by knight’s service, and after his death the bishop took the said lands into his custody, because the heir was under age. During the said wardship, one Emma, a co-heiress of the said John de Halton, died without heir of her body; which Emma held of the same John, and after her death the said bishop took seisin of her lands by reason of the wardship of the heir of the said John, and died so seised: after whose death the sub-escheator took the said wardship into the king’s hand, together with the other lands &c. of the said bishop, and by his own authority delivered seisin of certain parts of the lands of the said wardship to William Wyse, the younger, who claimed a right in them.
Writ of plenius certiorari on the representation of Roger Lovecock that a messuage in Exeter, which he had of the demise of Walter Bolle, John Bolle, John Hobbe and Cecily his wife, who deraigned it against Peter late bishop of Exeter in the king’s court according to the custom of the said city, had been unjustly taken into the king’s hand by the sub-escheator of Devon on the death of the said bishop, 25 Jan. 20 Edw. I.
Return. It was found by inquisition taken ex officio by the escheator that Peter late bishop of Exeter died seised of the said messuage, and for that reason only it was taken into the king’s hand.
DEVON. Inq. Tuesday, the morrow of St. Matthias, 20 Edw. I.
Exeter. Walter Bolle, John Bolle, John Hobbe and Cecily his wife, did not recover the said messuage against the said bishop because the bishop died during the plea.
