His grandson, Thomas son of Thomas de Bucton [alias de Boketon], aged 12 at the feast of All Saints, 32 Edw. I, is his next heir.
NORTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Daventre, 24 Sept. 33 Edw. I (mutilated).
Braundeston and Braundeston Bery. A capital messuage &c., 36a. arable, a meadow called Fiswere, a several pasture, rents of free tenants and villeins, and pleas &c. of court, held of William le Ros of Ingmanthorp by service of [6] barbed [arrows].
Heir as above, [son] of Alice, daughter of the said Thomas de Boltesham, aged 12.
Braundeston. A garden, 120a. arable, 9a. meadow, a several pasture, 30s. rents of villeins, 7s. from 2 cotmen, and a bakehouse, held for life of Nigel de . . lyngwrth and Alice his wife by service of a pair of gloves.
Staverton. 17s. 4d. assised rent, 4 hens and 1lb. pepper, similarly held by the service aforesaid.
Which tenements ought to revert to the said Nigel and Alice and the heirs of their bodies. The said Nigel is of full age, and holds the tenements in Braundeston of William le Ros, lord of Bewer, by service of 6 arrows, and the tenements in Staverton of William Albe, the younger, by service of a pair of gloves.
Staverton. 14l. 10s. 9d. assised rent held for life, by the courtesy (curialitate) of England of the inheritance of Senicla (?) sometime his wife, of John de Daventre by service of a knight’s fee.
The said Senicla had four daughters, viz.—Sibyl, deceased, who had a son and heir Nicholas de Couesgrave, who is of full age; Agnes, deceased, who sold her right to Robert Kynne, whereof a fine was levied in the king’s court between them; Isabel, deceased, who had two daughters, Agnes and Maud as one heir, who are of full age; and Alice, deceased, who had a son and heir Thomas son of Thomas de Boketon, aged 12.

A capital messuage &c., 200a. arable, 6a. meadow, 30a. wood, 16s. 10d. rent of free tenants and 1lb. pepper, 6l. 10s. rent of villeins, and pleas &c. of court, held for life of Godfrey, abbot of Peterborough, by service of a knight’s fee, rendering by the hands of the abbot, for the guard of the castle of Rokyngham 2s. 7 1/2d. and for sheriff’s aid 2s. 7 1/2d. yearly, which guard and aid the abbot holds at fee farm of the king and pays a fixed sum (certum) at the king’s exchequer yearly, and by doing suit at the abbot’s court of Castre every three weeks, rendering 2s. yearly at the abbot’s hundred of Langedyk, and doing suit at the court of Torpel every three weeks for his tenants in Eylleswurthe. William Charles and the said Joan acquired the said tenements of Geoffrey de Milton, to hold to them and the heirs of the said William.

Sutton in Asshefeld. The manor (extent given with names of free tenants), including a carucate of land in Oxton held by Beatrice de Sutton rendering a sore sparrow hawk yearly, and 2 bovates of land in Hothweyt held by John son of Andrew de Skiggeby rendering 8s. yearly; all held by service of rendering to the king’s bailiffs of the soke of Mamesfeld 14s. yearly, and doing suit at his court there every three weeks, and by service of finding an armed horseman in the king’s army in Wales, whenever the king shall be there, for forty days at his own charges.

Snyterton in the wapentake of Wyrkesworth. A third part of the town (extent given with names of tenants), including a capital messuage, held of the earl of Lancaster in free socage by homage and service of 7s. 9 1/2d. yearly, and suit at the said earl’s wapentake in Wyrkesworth every three weeks; and a third part of the town (extent given with names of tenants), including a capital messuage, held of Robert de Deuek, knight, in free socage by homage and service of 15qr. of corn yearly, and paying 8s. 7 1/2d. for him to the earl of Lancaster yearly at his manor of Wyrkesworth, but it does not suffice for the payment of the said rent.

Grafton. A fourth part of the manor (extent given) held of the king in chief by service of keeping a white brachet (hound) together with the other lords of the manor, viz,—his proportion for a fourth part of the manor; and 7a. arable in the field of Craneford held of Thomas le Courzoun by service of a rose.
Lodynton. A capital messuage &c., 140a. arable, 10a. meadow, 5s. rent of a freeman, 70s. rent of villeins, 24s. 8d. rent of cotmen &c., a wind-mill, pleas &c. of court, held of Sir Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln, by service of two parts of a knight’s fee.
Simon his son, aged 30 and more, is his next heir.
Grafton. A moiety of the manor (extent given), including a capital messuage, and 100a. wood within the bounds of the forest, held for life by the demise of William Hanred for 10l. yearly, after which demise the said William committed felony and was hanged, and the king entered upon the said moiety as his escheat, from which time the said Robert held the said moiety of the king and rendered the said 10l. at the king’s exchequer.

Marton and Stretton. Twelve carucates of land, whereof 14 make a knight’s fee (extent given with names of tenants), including 4 carucates and 6 bovates held in demesne, 2 carucates and 6 bovates held by the prior &c. of Boulton in frank almoin, 2 carucates held by John Gyliot (?), doing homage, wardship and relief, and rendering a sore sparrow hawk yearly, and 1 bovate held by William del Hill, doing homage &c. and rendering an arrow, held of the king in chief, as lord of the castle of Skipton in Craven, by homage, wardship, and relief, and doing suit at the court of knights at Skipton every three weeks.
Elslak. A carucate of land, and a water-mill worth 20s. yearly, held of Alan de Catherton in the fee of Moubray.
And Isabel sometime the wife of the said William was enfeoffed jointly with him for her life of the said yearly rent of the mill, and of 9 1/2 bovates of land of the aforesaid demesne bovates in Marton of the fee of Skipton.

Welyngham. Certain lands &c. with the hundreds of Laundiz and Suthgrenehowe, held jointly with Clemence his wife of the heir of Richard son of Alan, sometime earl of Arundell, by service of rendering yearly 10s. for the lands &c. in Welyngham, and 6l. for the said hundreds, and rendering to the king at the castle of Norwich for the said earl 48s. 6d. blanch farm for the hundreds aforesaid. And there are at Welyngham a capital messuage, 70a. arable, 12a. meadow, a wind-mill, 4 free tenants, 8 customers, rents of hens, works, and pleas &c. of court with view of frank pledge; 39s. 7d. assised rent, 20s. pleas &c. of the hundred of Laundiz, and 60s. yearly profits of the leets of the hundred; and 45s. 10 1/2d. assised rent, 6s. 8d. pleas &c. of the hundred of Suthgrenehowe, and 70s. profits of the leets of the same.
The said John and Clemence held the lands &c. in Welyngham by fine levied in the king’s court, and the two hundreds by the gift &c. of John le Straunge father of the deceased John.
Little Naryngges. A moiety of the manor (extent given), including a capital messuage, similarly held by fine levied, of William le Bule by service of a knight’s fee.
Fransham alias Little Fransham. A rent of 6qr. barley and 3qr. oats similarly held by fine levied, of Robert de Tony by service of 2s. yearly.

The said John and Clemence were enfeoffed of the hundreds aforesaid by John le Straunge the father in 22 Edw. I, and held them jointly until 21 May last when the said John the husband of Clemence died.
One Durant le Straunge, ancestor of the said John, time out of mind acquired the said hundreds from Flaud son of Alan, sometime lord of Milham, to hold to him and his heirs of the said Flaud and his heirs by service of 6l. yearly, and paying for them 48s. 6d. yearly, at the castle of Norwich; and the said hundreds descended by hereditary succession to Ralph son and heir of the said Durant, from him to Ralph his son and heir, and from him to John le Straunge who enfeoffed the said John and Clemence, to hold as aforesaid.
