Superintendent of Treaty Department 1813-70

In 1813 H. J. Rolleston, a Clerk on the establishment, was awarded an annual allowance of £150 for engrossing treaties with foreign powers, diplomatic commissions and other instruments to be signed by the monarch or to pass the great seal. (fn. 1) On his promotion to a senior clerkship in 1824 Rolleston continued to receive the allowance and thereafter was usually known as Superintendent of the Treaty Department. Lenox Conyngham, who succeeded to Rolleston's senior clerkship in 1834, also received the allowance until his promotion to the chief clerkship in 1841 when the superintendence of the Treaty Department became a function of the Chief Clerk. (fn. 2) In 1854 the Treaty Department was removed from the control of the Chief Clerk and placed under a Superintendent with a salary of £600 rising by annual increments of £25 to £800. (fn. 3) In 1862 an additional personal allowance of £200 was made available to the then Superintendent, J. B. Bergne. (fn. 4)
