  • 1. I have assigned to the Prebendal Stall of Oxgate Pss. 102–106, and to that of Consumpta per Mare Pss. 107–111. In the ancient list of Prebendal Stalls with the Psalms appointed for each, printed supra (Book I. Pars i. Capp. 60–62, pp. 24, 25), it is, however, plainly set out that the first Psalm to be said by the incumbent of the latter Prebend is "Confitemini Domino et invocate." Psalm 106 commences with "Confitemini Domino quoniam bonus," but it is Psalm 105 (according to the numbering in the Prayer Book) which begins "Confitemini Domino et invocate." The inequality between the portions assigned in the original MS. is, however, so great, that I am disposed to consider the addition of the words et invocate to have been an error of the scribe; and, as the expressed intention of the Statutes is that each Prebendary should say five Psalms (see Book I. pars ii. cap. 23, page 31 supra), I have ventured to substitute what I conceive to be a more correct reading. The confusion has arisen from the nearly identical headings of the Psalms in question. It will be observed that the portion actually recited by each Prebendary does not always consist of exactly five Psalms; an endeavour is made to equalise the portions said by each.
