May 1686

May 1. Satorday, Cosens trimmed me; Sir Edward Wood called on us; stayd not long; my sonne dined with us & Mainwaring we went about 4 to the Vulter; there was Wood & one Crispe; then came Lewes; my sonne left us; we all parted past 6; I went up to Millington & Bovery; but stayd not; then I & Mainwaring went to Elfords; dranck a dish of tea with Paige; Mr Duncan & we went out together; we called at Bourne's, Common Serjeant & Baroby with me & Mainwaring to the Bulls Head; we parted past 11.

2. Sonday, went twice to church; in the evening Bird, & Baskervile sate awhile with us; Humfreys came but stayd not; I went with Mainwaring & 2 daughters to Hogsden; there was Alderman Lewes, his sonne, my sonne & his wife, Morgan Whitley, Humfreys & a frind with him; we supt there, retorned past 8.

3. Monday, as I went out, neare 12 of the clock (& in the coach) there came a man to me very confidently, telling me he was a Cheshire man, had bin in the Indyes, wanted money &c. I told him I knew him not; desired not to make any new acquaintance in these times &c. he then desired I would give him his dinner; I sayd, we do not dine till neare of the clock but if he wanted a dinner I bade my servant give him sixpence; soe I was rid of him; I look on him as a cheate & a dangerous fellow to be encouraged at my house; I went to Sir Thomas Chitchley, stayd awhile; came home; Mrs Lloyd (Robert Lloyd's sister) dined with us; I called on Mount about my writings; in the afternoone Minshall came, stayd but awhile; I brought him to the Hall, there was Bedisford, they went away together; in the Parler was Coote, Stephens & Howseman; then came my sonne & Comberbach; then Thomas Minshall, Deane & Pemberton; then Lewes & his freind (I know not his name) & Mainwaring; my sonne went betimes; then Coote, Stephens & Howseman; the rest stayd till past 11.

4. Tuesday, Mr Stafford & Lee came to see us; I stayd awhile with them; then went to Mosiers; then to Cosens; I met Foche in Exchange Alley; called at Nokes shop; spoke with Paige, Ben Gerard, Knightly &c. on the Exchange; went to the Sunne, there was Mainwaring & Stafford; met Alderman Dashwood, below by the Bar; spoke with the haberdasher over the way about my old beavers; came home to dinner; in the evening Cosens trimmed me; then went to the painters; then to Sir Robert Claytons; spoke with my Lady in the Court; then to the Bull Head; there was 2 Tims, Baroby, Oneby & Richardson; we all parted before 10.

5. Wednesday, Mount came to me about the writings; Mainwaring & I went to Westminster; I discoursed with Humfreys, Foche, Stormy, Philips &c, in the Hall; Mainwaring & Foche came back in my coach; I went to Sir Robert: Claytons; spoke with Keck, dined at home; daughter Whitley with us & brother Peter; in the evening I went to the tooth drawer over against Somerset House; then to the Fountaine; there was Wood, Rogers, Mainwaring, Stephens, Coote, Lee; then came one Mr Williams, Lewes, then Maxwell; Wood & Rogers went first; we all parted past 10; Lee & Lewes & Mainwaring went in my coach; Lee stopt at Chancery lane, Lewes at Milk streete; Mainwaring & I came home.

6. Thursday, Tovey came to see the child; Page to let me blood; Fowler about my coach; Mount about the writings; Sir G.G. man to see us; Mr Lloyd of Chester to visit us; Minshall about Rogers businesse; he went with me to Grays Inne gate; then I went to Chitleys; he was abroad; I called at Ben Gerards to aske after Alderman Mainwaring; I spoke with Prentice, his master was at dinner; I came home; Mrs Howseman & another wooman dined with us; in the afternoone Kidder came to see me; he confirmed the report of the massacre in Piedmont; he sayd they were in armes and rebellion; I told him our preachers taught us better, that subjects must use no weapons but prayers & tears, though religion were concerned &c. he stayd [fo. 55v] May 6.about 1/2 houer; Millington's man came with a letter about my sonnes horses; in the evening I went out with my daughters; visited Lady Gerard & Lady Wood; I went to the Coffee house; there was Clargys, Sir William Poultney, Champion, Warburton, Coriton, Manwaring & some others; I stayd neare 1/2 houer, had some tea; left most of them there; called my daughters at Lady Woods; brought them home; went to Clayton's; discoursed my businesse with him; spoke with Keck at the Gate; went to the Bull Head; there was Mainwaring, G: Mainwaring, Minshall, Gerard & Baskervile; Minshall left us; we all parted about 11.

7. Friday, went to Lord Dover, he was abroad; spoke with his man; went to Westminster, spoke with Clayton, Foche, Humfreys, Faireband & Rivers, Turton, Williams &c. called on Jones in Scotland Yard to aske for Sir John Hanmer; called at Grays Inne; spoke with Sir G.G. by the gate; dined at home; Sir Edward Wood, Lady & daughter with us; Jones came to see me; I went about 4 to the painters; my daughters with me; they left me there; I went in the evening to ????ley; thence to the Bull Head; there was 2 Tims, Oneby, Baroby, Colonel Smith, Richardson, Page, Mainwaring, Baskervile & G: Mainwaring; we parted past 10.

8. Satorday, I went to Lord Dovers; he was abroad; spoke to his servant; then to Westminster; walked a while there; spoke with Foche, Sir John Heath &c. went with Mainwaring to Cottons; stayd 1/2 houer with him & his Lady; dined at home, Lee, Mr Mainwaring of Whitmore, G: Mainwaring, Mainwaring, Dashwood, Lewes & my sonne with us; Lord Brereton came & sate downe, had dined before, stayd awhile after dinner; then my sonne went, then Dashwood; all parted before 6; Mosiers man came with writings, had a glasse of wine, stayd not; I stayd within all night.

9. Sonday, went twice to church; Minshall dined with us; in the evening, Saladine, Bird & Baskervile came to me; after they went Jones came; about 7 I went to Hogsden; supt there; there was Mainwaring, Minshall, Alderman Mainwaring, Lewes, Mr Cooks 2 neices & another gentlewomam, also Alderman Lewes, Morgan Whitley, Rud & another; we parted past 8; I brought Cook's neices home; Alderman Mainwaring came home with me; Minshall came to us & Mainwaring we parted past 10.

10. Monday, I went to Mosyer, then to Mount, spoke with them both; dined at home, Cornet Brereton with us; after dinner Saladine came to see writings sealed for Taylor of Chester; then Jones; they all went past 3; Sir Michael Biddolph came to towne, young Turton came to us; I left them together; next barber trimmed me; Minshall came to us; I went with him to visit Alderman Mainwaring &c. at Blossom's Inne; he was abroad; we went to the Sunne in Milk Streete; there was Mainwaring, Comberbach; Ben: Gerard, Alderman Mainwaring, Deane, 2 Minshalls, Baroby, Baskervile, Thame, Stanley, Hollinshed, master of a ship for Chester, Mainwaring that lives with B: Gerard; at last came Sir William: Biddolph; we parted about 10; Biddolph & I came home.

11. Tuesday, I went to St Lawrence; Tilletson preached; spoke with Baskervile & his wife at the doore; came home, Lee called but stayd not; I dined at home; Mainwaring, Biddolph & my sonne & Toveys with us; after dinner Millington came to my sonne about horses; he went away about 5; I went to Lord Cootes, he was abroad; spoke with his servant; met Stephens at the end of Fetter Lane in Holborne; went to Humfreys & Levet; spoke with him about the lack lands & Mr Booth; walked awhile with Gulston in the cloisters, discoursed about Egerton's Statute; met my sonne & Morgan Whitley at Humfreys; my sonne went with me in my coach to the end of the Old Jury; I went to Claytons; stayd 1/2 houer with him, went to Garoways; Foche came to me neare 9; parted in a short tyme; called on Mount, came home before 10.

12. Wednesday, went to Lord Dover's; spoke with his servant; followed his Lordship to his new house; there was a minister & 2 or 3 gentlemen with him; he was cheapening [fo. 56r] 12 swords; spoke about my businesse; stayd not; went to Westminster Hall; met Sir Robert Cotton, Clayton, Parkhurst, Gulston, Humfreys, Palmer, Wade, Waring, Foche & severall other acquaintance; stayd till the Chancery was up; called on Sir Thomas Chitchley about my businesse, came home to dinner; went in the evening to Sir John Cuttler; then to the Fountaine, there was Wood, Lee, Rogers, Dashwood & Mainwaring; we parted at 10.

13. Thursday, the taylors man came with my clothes; Mount came about the writings & Jones with some guineys; I went to Chitchley's; he was abroad; retorned home; dined with the Parish at Brewers Hall; came home past 4; Minshall came, stayd awhile; I went out past 5; met Sir G.G. in the streete in Holborne, talked with him awhile at the coach side; called at Sir Thomas Chitchleys; he was abroad; went to Lady Gerards; there was her aunt, cosen Fairefax & my daughters with her; stayd but awhile; called on Humfreys; went to Sam Gerards, he was abroad; I sate awhile in the Hall, reade a Gazette; my daughters called on me; we went home together; I went to Bosoms Inne to see Minshall & Deane, they were abroad; I met Baskervile & Baroby at widdow Bournes doore; we went to the 3 Tunns; we had 2 bottles of wine; the master came up & dranck a glass with us; we parted past 10; went home; Lee was there with Mainwaring & Bird; we presently parted.

14. Friday, Saladine came to me about a bill for Roger; taylors man brought my clothes; I went to Chitchleys; he was abroad; went to Westminster; went to the cook's in the Palace yard to the house of office; met Mr Peirce; he sayd he would come to me with a message from Colonel Price; I met Sir Robert Cotton, Sir G.G., Turton, Clayton, Foche & severall acquaintance in the Hall; called again on Chitchley; he was abroad; came home to dinner; Biddolph, Mainwaring, my sonne & Tovey dined with us; Minshall came after dinner; stayd not; then came Humfreys; stayd not; about 5 came Sir Edward Wood; he went in my coach to Grays Inne; I went to Chitchleys; he was abroad; I went to Grays Inne Walks; there was Wood; then came Sir Philip Lloyd & Jack Lloyd; then Sir G.G., his sonne & sonne in law; the 2 Lloyds left us; we went to the 3 Tunns; thence to the Cock in Essex Buildings; we parted about 10; I brought Wood home; called on Chitchley, he was abroad; went home.

15. Satorday, next barber trimmed me; I went to Chitchley; retorned about one; yong Turton dined with us; after dinner came Minshall; they all parted presently; past 5 Baroby came & another man with him ( know not his name) we dranck a bottle of wine & parted; Biddolph & I went to take the ayre neare Hide parke; called at the Coffe house; there was Clargy's, Coliton, Champion & some others; we stayd awhile & came home.

16. Sonday, went twice to church; Minshall dined with us; in the evening came Baroby & Baskervile; stayd but awhile; then came Pargeter & Oneby; then Turton & his sonne & my sonne; they stayd till past 8.

17. Monday, Mr Wakefeild came to Biddolph; I spoke with him about a discharge for Roger on Robinson's execucon; I went to Westminster; spoke with Crispe at the Hall gate; with Sir G.G., his sonnes, Wharton, Montague, Foche, Deane, brother Peter, Travaile, Dyas &c. in the Hall; came home about one; cosen Fairefax dined with us & Baskervile; Mount came after dinner about the writings & Minshall about going to Roger; in the evening I brought Fairefax to Lady Gerards; then went to Claytons; he was going to the Exchange; there I found him; I walked awhile with him; then with Sitwell; went with him to the Spanish Club; there was Millington, Cannan, Castleton, Sir William Turner, Parot, Lee, Sands, Sitwell, another stranger to me; I left them past 10 & at home found Lee, & Minshall; Mainwaring & Biddolph they parted before 11.

18. Tuesday, next barber trimmed me; I went to the picture drawers past 10; retorned past 1; Minshall dined with us; about 5 I went to the painters; about 8 to Humfreys; he was abroad; called at the Bulls Head, no company there; I went to Exchange Alley to Cosens; met Oneby coming out but stayd not with him; came home; Morgan Whitley & Biddolph supt with us.

19. Wednesday, Mount came, & examined the writings; Hilman came about my clothes; Sir G.G.'s man, to see us from his master; I went to Chitchley; dined at home; my sonne with us [fo. 56v] 19. after dinner, Fowler came about my coach & Mount came about writings; Baskervile & Jones to be witnesses; there came one Downes (with Jones) about Roger's debts; I went about 7 to Humfreys; met brother Peter & M: Whitley in the Walkes; then Sir G.G., he went with me to the Fountaine; there was Wood, Stephens, Mainwaring, Lee, Rogers & my sonne; he stayd not; then came Mr Howard; we all parted about 10; I brought Sir G.G. & Lee (in my coach) to Grays Inne Gate; then Mainwaring & I came home.

20. Thursday, the corne chandler & the brewer came to speake with me; I went to Mosiers; then to Claytons; spoke with him & Keck; Sir Langham came in, I left them together; came home, found Mrs Tovey & her daughter with my daughters; they dined with us; also Sir G.G., Wood & brother Peter; after dinner came Minshall but stayd not; they all parted about 5; Mr Herle came to tell us Alderman Mainwaring remembred him to us; Minshall came again to discourse me about Roger; I went to Humfreys & with him to the Chancellor; then I went to the Cock in Essex Buildings; there was Sir G.G. , Wood & Stephens; afterwards came in Sir G.G.'s 2 sonnes; we parted before 10; I came home.

21. Friday, Minshall came to receive instructions about Roger; also Kent about Roger's things & debts; Mosier came about Chitchley's morgage; I dined at home; about 7 I went to Lord Brandon (he having sent for me) I found his sister Charlotte with him; his Lordship's businesse was to show me Sam: Gerard's particular & to motion him for my daughter; I left him, about 8; called at Sir Robert Clayton's they were abroad; went to the Bull Head; there was Tims, Oneby, Biddolph Mainwaring, Baskervile & a stranger (to me) we parted before 10; I came home.

22. Satorday, Hilman came about my clothes; & Keck about Chitchley's mortgage; the next barber trimmed me; I went to the painters, dined at home, Lady Wood & daughter with us; past 4 Mosiers clarke came, to perfect the writings; Baskervile, Jones & Saladine to see me seale them, I went to Chitchleys, retorned before 9.

23. Sonday, went twice to church; received the sacrament; after evening sermon, Biddolph & Baskervile came to us; stayd an houer; then I went with Biddolph, Mainwaring & Baskervile to Timms; there was Oneby & another; we stayd till neare 8; came home.

24. Monday, Downes of Salop came about money Roger owes him; then came Jones about our accounts; Mrs Tovey & Lewes dined with us; about 3 Lewes & Mainwaring went out; then came Dr Stratford, stayd but awhile; I went in the evening to the Coffee house neare St James Church to speake with Champion about a cook & valet de Chambre; there was Clarges, Vernon & severall others, unknowne to me; I left them; went to Lady Woods; there came one Mrs Eager to visit her; stayd but awhile; there was Sir Edward, theire daughters, sonne & Martyn; then came cosen Fairefax & my daughters & Biddolph & Mainwaring we supt there; parted past 10; Mrs Martyn came home, in my coach.

25. Tuesday, Saladine came to see me; then came Champion with a French man for Mainwaring; I went to Humfreys; retorned past 12; found Lady Wood, her sonne & daughter at home; I dined at the Bell in St Nicholas Lane, with Biddolph, Mainwaring, Lee, Wood, Lewes, my sonne & Gleg; went thence with most of them to Elfords Coffee house; then with Wood & Lewes to my house; they stayd neare an houer; there was Lady Wood, her daughters & my sonnes wife; after they went, came Sir G.G. & his 3 Sonnes; after they parted I went to Baskervile's; there was Lindley with him; we went to the Bull Head; there was Biddolph Mainwaring, Gleg, Crispe, Baroby, one Evrard (or such name) a stranger to me) Baskervile, Lewes & my sonne; he left us; we all parted about 11.

26. Wednesday, my daughters went into the contrey, Biddolph & Mainwaring with them; there was my sonne, Tovey's, brother Peter, Gleg, Lee, Bedisford, Manley to take leave &c. next barber trimmed me; I dined alone at home; went about 5 to Humfreys, found Mr Child with him; discoursed about the money he was to lend me; went to have my teeth cleansed, then to the Fountaine; there was Wood, Lewes, Rogers & Maxwell; parted about 10; brought Wood home & Jones, he the Sunne; had a bottle of wine, Mrs Anne with us, parted past 11.

Thursday, Pickmore came to discourse me about Roger; Pointz & his servants to take downe the goods; I went to Done's; he was abroad; I spoke with his clark; I went to Chitchley, spoke with him; dined alone at home; after dinner our old servant Mary Evans came to see us; after her Clark, an Apothecary, about money Mr Euart owes him; then one Kinaston about money for the poore of Bangor due from Alrey; past 6 I went to the Cock in Essex Streete to call on my sonne; he was gone; but there was Sir John Borface, Lewes & 4 or 5 more, all strangers to me; they had all drunck hard; 3 or 4 of them went presently away; left Burlace, Lewes, 2 more & my selfe; we had 3 or 4 bottles of wine; parted past 9; Lewes & I went to Garaways; then to the Sunne; had a bottle behinde the bar; there was Mrs Anne & Morgan Whitley; Cook came in but stayd not; I left them past 11, came home..

28. Friday, I met Palmer in the Temple court, walked awhile with him; I also met Keck there; he went with me to the Exchange; I called at Nokes to enquire for my sonne; I called at Humfreys, spoke with him at the doore; I dined at Grillan's; Lewes & my sonne with me; after dinner Garrat came & dranck a glasse of wine with us; I went home with my sonne; Mr Champion came to us with a French cook, whom I hyr'd for £12; Champion went with my sonne & me to the Temple; there we parted; my sonne & I went to Humfreys; afterwards I met & talked with Peirce in the court; I went with Sir Philip Carteret & my sonne to the Castle Taverne; there was Sir G.G. & his 2 sonnes; there came a cole master to speake with them, but stayd not; we parted about 8; I went to the Bull Head; there was Oneby, 2 Tims, Baskervile, Lee, Mitton & Richardson; Baroby came in but stayd not; we parted neare 11.

29. Satorday, Keck came to me about Chitchley's businesse & Jones the Scrivener about Oneby's rent, &c. I went to Mr Gulston about Egertons statute, then to Chitchley's; he was abroad; then to Mrs Luddington about Egerton's debt; I called at Grays Inne; spoke with Sir G.G.'s man at the Gate; I met Lee in Chancery Lane, he asked where he might see me in the evening; I dined at home, my sonne with me; after dinner came Humfreys; he & my sonne went away together; then Saladine & Jones came; stayd but awhile; about 5 came Stephens; after him next barber trimmed me; I went to Lincolns Inne to speake with Lee; he came to me to the Crowne in Bloomsbury; there I met Mrs Luddington, about Egerton's statute; Lee & I went thence together to Sir Edward Wood; supt there with himselfe, Lady, sonne & daughters; past 10 came home.

30. Sonday, went twice to church; dined with Baskervile, his wife, daughter, cosen, & a man (stranger to me); after evening prayer, Baskervile & Jones came to me, stayd but awhile; then came Baroby & Lee; we went to Hogsden; supt there with Alderman Lewes, his daughter & Nigly; retorned neare 10; parted at my doore.

31. Monday, I dined at Mr Grullon's; Sir John Borlace, his cosen & frind, Lewes, my sonne & Humfreys with us; Humfreys left us, we went to the Sunne; I presently left them & went to Gulston, spoke with his clark; Mr Marriot met me in the Temple, spoke to me about brother Peter & my sonne, being concerned in arrears to the Queene; I went to Chitchley, then back to the Temple; walked awhile with Palden; went with Humfreys to Mr Childs about money, then went with Lee to Greene Dragon, had a bottle of wine; parted before 10; came home.
