  • 1. . The title 'Director' as applied to him in D.N.B. in connexion with the E.I.C. is an anachronism by more than a century. His removal to Bridge Ward (for which he served more than twice as long as for Portsoken) is ignored.
  • 2. . D.N.B. gives year of removal to Coleman Street according to the obsolete Civil reckoning. The name of Mr. Cokayne ('G.E.C.') is wrongly spelled.
  • 3. . D.N.B. ignores his election as Alderman, and describes him anachronistically (see note 66) as a 'Director' of the E.I.C.
  • 4. . This date is correct; that given in D.N.B. is not.
  • 5. . The writer of the D.N.B. article says he was removed 'apparently to Langbourn': the qualifying word is quite unnecessary as the fact is recorded in Repertory 32, only half a dozen folios before one to which he refers in the next line. The statement that Leman was President of Christ's Hospital 'in the year of his death' is a very meagre reference to his nearly 14 years' tenure of that post. It is difficult to suggest any reason for the distinction in length of tenure implied in the words 'Sheriff in 1606 and Lord Mayor in 1616-17.' In each case the office was held from a certain day in one year to the same day in the next year, and the record of both should follow the same principle of dating.
  • 6. . In the D.N.B. notice of Bonham Norton (which is appended to that of his father, John Norton) his Ward is not mentioned, nor is it stated that he only held office for two months.
  • 7. . The original edition of D.N.B. gives only one of his four Wards, and that one neither the first nor the last. The omissions are supplied in the new issue. The article, in addition to its inherent merits, derives special interest from the fact that it is contributed by the subject's venerable and distinguished descendant, Mr. G. E. Cokayne (Clarenceux King-at-Arms), to whom every student of English genealogy and family history owes a debt which cannot adequately be paid.
  • 8. . The D.N.B. notice of John Norton (which is appended to that of his uncle, William Norton) does not name his Ward.
  • 9. . D.N.B. article ignores his election as Alderman. [A list of Masters of the Mercers, supplied me by a prominent official of that Company, who rather brusquely declined to verify it, gives 'Sir B. Hicks, Viscount Campden, Alderman of Bread Street, Master 1631' (i.e., two years after his death). As the dates of other Masterships of the Mercers in this book are from the same source, it will be understood that I cannot guarantee their absolute accuracy.]
  • 10. . The D.N.B. in its original issue perverted Lime Street into 'Lion' Street (which in another article was disguised as 'Limehouse'). The writer of the article omits to notice his connexion with the E.I.C., his Presidency of St. Thomas' Hospital and his Colonelcy of the Trained Bands.
  • 11. . In the D.N.B. article 'Aldgate' is erroneously given (instead of Tower) as his first Ward, and the date of his election is wrong—four elections for the Ward took place between the D.N.B. date and the true one. The 'Geere' of the text is an orthographical variant for 'Gayer,' adopted from Professor Gardiner, who quotes an authority in which the names of three of the four Aldermen referred to are distorted.
  • 12. The name appears in the Repertory as 'Ferris' and 'Ferrys,' but the above is the correct form.
  • 13. . The D.N.B. in an article on his namesake and contemporary, with whom he is often confounded, refers to him with the prefix 'Sir,' which is erroneous; he was not knighted. I had fallen into the same error in Vol. I. of this work at p. 124, which, however, is corrected at pp. 256, 415.
  • 14. This name is erroneously entered as 'Hudson' in the minute of his election (Repertory 38, fo. 95b).
  • 15. . The D.N.B. dates of death and probate of will are according to the obsolete Civil computation. The new edition incorporates several additions to, and corrections of, the original article from an apparently well-informed critic.
  • 16. 'Pritchett' is the correct form of the name which, however, appears in the Repertory as 'Prichard.'
  • 17. . The name is recorded as Ballett in Repertory 39, ff. 213b, 218, but he was almost certainly identical with William Ballard, saddler to Queen Henrietta Maria, who died in 1648, as stated in the text above.
  • 18. I have assumed that the Alderman of Vintry, 1626, was identical with the Alderman of Farringdon Without who had been discharged in the preceding year. This, however, is not absolutely certain; if such was the case, the fine imposed as a condition of discharge on the former occasion had probably not been paid, and he was still liable to be called upon to serve as an Alderman.
  • 19. . The actual date of admission, which is left undetermined in Vol. I., p. 159, is ascertained with precision from comparison of entries in Rep. 40, fo. 3, and Letter Book II., fo. 173.
  • 20. The new issue of the D.N.B. corrects some dates given in the original edition according to the old Civil computation. Other erroneous dates are still retained; those given in the text above are accurate where they differ from, as well as where they agree with, the D.N.B.
  • 21. . The original edition of D.N.B. (corrected in the new issue) misdates his election as Alderman by four years, and omits the name of his Ward.
  • 22. In the record of his election his Christian name is erroneously given as John and his surname originally as 'Bonsell' corrected to 'Bouswell.' The Christian name is correctly given as George in the records of his admission and of his discharge, the surname appearing as 'Boswell,' the form I have adopted at p. 208 of Vol. I. From his will it appears that the true orthography is 'Buswell.'
  • 23. . This spelling ('Morris') of his Christian name is in accordance with his own signature—'Maurice,' which I had adopted in Vol. I. of this work, is more commonly found. The original article in D.N.B. included several errors corrected in the new issue, which, however, retains an incorrect date for his election as M. P. for Hull, states that he sat for London in the earliest parliament of Charles I., which is not the case, and also that he was one of the original 'directors' of the E.I.C., which is equally contrary to fact.
  • 24. . In the 'revised version' of the D.N.B. the speech attributed to Garraway in January, 1642, which in the original issue is accepted as genuine, is admitted to be fictitious; but the editor has, nevertheless, allowed the passage in the original article to remain cancelled, in which, on the sole authority of that speech, Garraway is said (erroneously) to have been a member of the House of Commons. The D.N.B. makes his election as Sheriff precede that as Alderman, which is incorrect: it also dates his removal to Broad Street and the signature of his will according to the obsolete Civil reckoning of the years. [The spelling of the Alderman's name is very uncertain: in the E.I.C. Court Books the forms 'Garraway,' 'Garway,' 'Garroway,' are used indiscriminately, but his eldest son, William, signed 'Garway.']
  • 25. The insertion of 'Sir' before his name in Vol. I., p. 349, is a lapsus calami corrected at p. 422.

  • 28. . The Article in D.N.B., which is accurate and careful, omits the dates of his election as Alderman and does not particularise his Wards, and it overlooks his Presidency of Christ's Hospital.
  • 29. 'Gayer' is in accordance with the Alderman's signature: 'Gayre' is the usual form in the City records. The D.N.B. article ignores his connexion with the Levant Company and commits the usual anachronism of styling him an E.I.C. 'Director.'
  • 30. . The original issue of the D.N.B. (corrected in the new edition) misdates his election as Sheriff and assigns his resignation of his Aldermanry vaguely to 'the interval' (between 1642 and 1652). The actual date of election as Alderman which I had left open at Vol. I., p. 49, is established by comparing Rep. 51, ff. 1, 5b. with Letter Book N.N. fo. 53.
  • 31. The date of death is erroneously given as July 25, 1640, in Vol. I., p. 93.
  • 32. . He is wrongly described in D.N.B. by the prefix 'Sir' (see Vol. I., p. 25 of this work). Also the years of his election as Alderman and of two of his three elections as Member of the Council of State are given according to the obsolete Civil year computation, that of the third being altogether wrong. Two different years are assigned for his death in the headline and in the text in the original issue; in the revised edition the erroneous date is printed in both places, the correct one being altered. The true date might easily have been ascertained from the Calendar of State Papers, Domestic Series, Charles II., 1661-2, Vol. 2, p. 184. The name of his Ward is not given in D.N.B.
  • 33. . The original article in D.N.B., which is very meagre in its details of his life, gives the date of death according to the obsolete computation, and only names one of his Wards. In the new issue Billingsgate should be read for 'Bishopsgate.'
  • 34. . The D.N.B. does not name any of his three Wards, nor does it give the date at which he became an Alderman. His father-in-law, Nicholas Crisp, is erroneously described as Alderman.
  • 35. . The writer of the D.N.B. article, who names neither of his Wards and omits the date of his election as Alderman, makes him identical with the John Fowke who bequeathed certain lands to Christ's Hospital, which is clearly impossible, inasmuch as the Alderman died in 1662 and the will containing these bequests is dated October 26, 1686! It also makes him the subject of a portrait dated 1691, i.e., 29 years after his death. The assumption that he retained his Commissionership of Customs after 1645 is not correct.
  • 36. . The D.N.B. contains a good article on him by Professor Firth.
  • 37. . The error (already noted under Reynardson) of describing his father-in-law, Nicholas Crisp, as an Alderman occurs also in the D.N.B. article on Cullum. The original edition gives neither the name of his Ward nor the date of his election as Alderman, which are supplied by the present writer for the new issue.
  • 38. . In the D.N.B. article on Sir C. Packe, Edmonds is described as 'Lord Mayor of London, ' an office to which he was elected (as above) but which he did not accept.
  • 39. His name is entered in the Repertory as 'Bonus' in the records of his election and admission, but correctly in that of his discharge.
  • 40. . There is no record of Vyner's first election as Alderman: he first appears as present on October 6, 1646, his predecessor in Billingsgate Ward having been removed to Cornhill on September 17.
  • 41. The D.N.B. article represents him as the successor of Browne in Langbourn Ward, from which Aldermanry Browne had been ejected more than sixteen months earlier and had had six successors in it in the interim! His Knighthood by Charles II. is omitted, as also his Presidency of Christ's Hospital. The name of Alderman Backwell, (Viner's partner in the purchase of 'Spanish prize plate' [sic], by which the silver bullion captured by Blake when he burned the Plate fleet is meant) is given as 'Blackwell,' which, as there was a contemporary 'Alderman Blackwell,' is misleading.
  • 42. . The writer of the D.N.B. article on Methold ignores his election as Alderman and speaks of him as being Deputy-Governor of the E.I.C. 'in 1650,' as if for that year only, whereas he held the office continuously for the last ten years of his life. The statement that 'a "free brother" of the E.I.C.' was 'in effect a Director' must have been evolved from the writer's inner consciousness; it is sheer nonsense.
  • 43. . The D.N.B. slightly misdates his election for Cripplegate, and omits altogether his removal to Bassishaw. (See also Note 93, p. 67). It has also failed to find the date of his appointment as Commissioner of Customs.
  • 44. . In this case, as in that of Methold, his election as Alderman is ignored. The minute of his election definitely describes him as a Weaver, of which Company the writer of the article, with a refinement of caution, remarks that 'he appears to have been a member.'
  • 45. . The D.N.B. article omits his connexion with the Merchant Taylors' Company and his election to the Parliament of 1661, of which he was a member till his death. There is an apparent misprint in the date of his election as Lord Mayor. Overall (Remembrancia, p. 199), who is followed by Mr. Cokayne in his Baronetage, erroneously states that he removed to Bridge Without in 1663, confounding him with another Richard Browne, who was neither a knight nor a baronet; he also misdates his death.

  • 48. The spelling in the text above is that of his signature; in Vol. I. (pp. 125, 194, 231 and elsewhere) I have followed the repertories in adding a final 'e' to his name.
  • 49. . I have in vol. I. (p. 258) identified this Alderman with the future Baronet (so created October, 1660) who was M.P. for Andover from 1660 till his death, July 14, 1672, and was son-in-law to Sir Edmund Wright (Lord Mayor 1640-1). While I am not convinced beyond the possibility of doubt that that identification is erroneous, I think it more probable that the Alderman was the Baronet's father, who died in 1658 as stated in the text.

  • 51. . I have in Vol. I. (p. 220) somewhat rashly identified this Alderman with the future Alderman of Billingsgate (see 1658) who was a member of the same Company. It is obviously difficult to discriminate, in the absence of definite evidence, between the various persons contemporary with each other bearing so common a name as John Smith, and it is not impossible that my original identification is correct, but I feel almost assured that my 'revised version' as given above is the true one.
  • 52. . The identification in the text with the future Baronet is probable, but not free from doubt.
  • 53. . In the D.N.B. article his Knighthood, which was conferred during his Mayoralty, is antedated by a year; no indication is given of his Ward or of the date of his election as Alderman.
  • 54. Alleyn was allowed his precedency of election over Noell, although not admitted till later, his not appearing to be sworn earlier being due to absence from the City.
  • 55. . The D.N.B. article omits his date of death, and does not mention his having been twice elected Alderman and once Sheriff, or his return to two parliaments.
  • 56. His name is entered as 'Neve' in the record of his election in Rep. 60, fol. 165b.
  • 57. . He was sworn on the day of election, not (as stated in Vol. I., p. 210) on that of his discharge.
