The dates of Garrard's succession to the Baronetcy, of his election as Alderman and of his death, as given in D.N.B., are all given according to the obsolete Civil computation; those of his elections as Sheriff and President of Bridewell are altogether wrong; so also (by nine years) is that of his Mastership of the Grocers. His ancestor, the first Baronet, was not, as stated in D.N.B., the Lord Mayor of the same name. His first election to Parliament is not recorded; a purely imaginary one in 1707 is apparently inserted by way of compensation for the omission.
  • 3. . The dates of election to Bridge Without and as M.P. for the City (first time), and for Helston, are all given according to the obsolete Civil computation, whilst that of his death is correct according to the modern system of dating. The identification of Heathcote with his namesake, who was the object of Catherine Macaulay's praise and Horace Walpole's denunciation, is grotesquely wide of the mark, the person referred to being his nephew, Alderman George Heathcote, who, unlike his uncle, was a strenuous anti-Walpolean.
  • 4. . D.N.B. dates his death according to the obsolete system of computation.
  • 5. . This spelling is in accordance with the Alderman's autograph, which I had not seen when the earlier portion of Vol. I. was printed in which the name is spelled as usually found ('Humphreys').
  • 6. . He was originally a Whig and was one of the candidates of that party for the City in 1710, but generally voted with the Tories after 1713.
  • 7. . Ward had been one of the Tory candidates for the City at the election of 1708, but he rejoined the Whigs, with whom he had been originally connected, very soon after his return on that occasion. His Mayoralty is completely misdated in the D.N.B.'s article on his uncle, Sir Patience Ward.
  • 8. . The D.N.B. article gives the date of his election as Alderman according to the obsolete civil computation, and thereby makes it appear that he was an Alderman before he was M.P., whereas the reverse is the fact.
  • 9. . The D.N.B. article dates the translation of Parsons to the Grocers' Company as 'upon his election as Lord Mayor,' whereas it took place more than five years earlier. The year of his contest for Reigate is quite unintelligibly expressed: I have no idea which year the writer means, except that it is obviously not the right one. 'Viscount Avalon' is not a correct description of anybody who ever existed; presumably 'Viscount Mordaunt of Avalon' is meant. (It would be quite incorrect to speak of Lord James of Hereford as 'Lord Hereford' or Viscount Kitchener of Khartoum as 'Viscount Khartoum.') The printer is probably responsible for the date, uncorrected in the new issue, which puts his marriage half a century before his birth. There can be no possible doubt as to the identity of his father-in-law, whom the writer describes as 'Sir Ambrose Crowley, or Crawley'; he was the Alderman of Dowgate 1711-3, recorded on p. 122 ante.
  • 10. . The article in D.N.B. as revised in the new issue is accurate, but the date of admission to freedom appears to be according to the old system of computation.
  • 11. . The omission of Barber's name from the D.N.B. is surprising: he was a better known man in his day than many who are commemorated in its pages.
  • 12. . In his later years, Williams, who had been a prominent Tory and the champion of that party in opposition to Sir E. Bellamy in the great contest for the Shrievalty in 1724, voted with the Walpolean Whigs in the Court of Aldermen in the struggles for the Mayoralty in 1740 and 1741.
  • 13. . Those marked thus were nominally Whigs, but prominent anti-Walpoleans in alliance with the Tories.
  • 14. . There are several errors in the original article in D.N.B., one of which is corrected with singular lack of perspicacity in the later issue. The date of retirement from the Court of Aldermen originally appears as 1750; in correcting this to 1758 all the words relating to his transfer to Bridge Without are omitted, thereby making the following sentence pure nonsense.   • 25. . The statement in D.N.B. that Harley was the first Lord Mayor of London since Walworth, who was a Privy Councillor, is not correct, nor did his election as Alderman precede, as the article implies, his return to Parliament and his admission to the freedom of the Goldsmiths.
  • 26. . Some inaccuracles in the article on Crosby in original edition of D.N.B. are corrected in the revised issue.
  • 27. . The date of knighthood suggested in D.N.B. is completely wrong. He was not, as the text implies, Sheriff at the date of the entertainment given to the King of Denmark. There is no reference to his electoral contests at Coventry. (Hallifax, though a moderate Whig in general politics, supported the Court in civic matters during the later period of the Wilkes agitation).
  • 28. . The excellent article on Wilkes in D.N.B. (one of the best in the whole Dictionary), has one slight inaccuracy in giving the date of his election as Chamberlain as December, 1779. The poll closed on November 29. Wilkes' Livery Company is not recorded, nor are his four unsuccessful candidatures for the Chamberlainship against his predecessor noticed.
  • 29. . The omission of Townsend's name from the D.N.B. biographies is quite indefensible, having regard to the many less important and comparatively undistinguished personages who have been admitted.
  • 30. . The D.N.B. ante-dates Sawbridge's Shrievalty by a year; hence the amazing blunder of saying that 'during his (Sawbridge's) Shrievalty he five times returned Wilkes as duly elected for Middlesex.' Sawbridge was not Sheriff at the period of Wilkes' Middlesex elections, nor was he in any official way concerned in them; moreover, there were only four (not five) such elections in 1768-9, and only three of these in the course of a single Shrievalty. Sawbridge's defeat in the City election of 1780, and his unsuccessful candidature for the Mayoralty in 1773, are both ignored. Alderman Townsend's name is (as usual) mis-spelled.
  • 31. . The D.N.B. writer of the article on Oliver thinks it worth while to record his election as 'General' of the Honourable Artillery Company. This was a temporary and purely ornamental post conferred at that time annually on two Aldermen In strict rotation, and was held by almost (or quite) all the Aldermen whose lives are written in D.N.B. for the period 1710-1780, but in no other article is the fact recorded, nor have I included such elections in my notes on individual Aldermen. The biographer clearly had not the least idea of the nature of the office.
  • 32. . Both Bull and Lewes were sufficiently notable personages to warrant their inclusion in D.N.B., in which, however, they are not accorded a place. Lewes, though a Whig, was a supporter of Pitt's administration later.
  • 33. . The original edition of D.N.B. is incorrect in making Clark 'President of Bridewell'; he never held that office; he was not an alderman at the date given, and only aldermen were then deemed eligible for the Presidency.
  • 34. . Turner (like Wilkes, Lewes and Townsend), though a Whig, was a strong opponent of the Coalition of 1783 and supported Pitt.
