Cordewanerstrate H. Galeys, Cordwainer ward.

Parishes: St. Antholin, St. Mary Aldermary, St. Mary le Bow. Partly in Cordwainer: All Hallows Bread Street, St. Benet Sherehog, Holy Trinity the Less, St. John the Baptist, St. Mildred Bread Street, St. Thomas Apostle. St. Mildred Poultry and St. Pancras Soper Lane are in Cheap, but adjoin Cordwainer.

Alderman: Henry le Waleys (c. 1269-1294). Early references: H. le Waleys 1260-1 Pat, H. le Waleis 1261-2 ib. (provider of wine to the King), 1268 ib. (King's merchant). He was a sheriff 1270-1, Mayor 1273-4, 1281-4, 1298-9. He was a juror for Vintry in 1275 (RH 424) and evidently lived there. He is called H. Walsshe as a sheriff LBF 280. If he is identical with Henry legalays, father of William de Strogoyl, whose will was enrolled in 1281-2, he may have come from Chepstow (olim Strogoil).

  • 8. There may have been two persons of this name connected with Cordw. John Heyrun junior 1298 LBB 68, 1300 Mayors 99 (tenant of a shop in Soper Lane), J. Heyroun 1325 (1327-8) Will (a tenant in St. Antholin). This would seem to have been a pepperer, but he may have been assessed in some other ward. There is further John Hayroun 1309 LBD 213 (witness in St. Mary le Bow with Clement le Settere), J. Heyroun, settere 1314 LBE 50, perhaps J. Heyron 1319 S [Cordw 21]. This man was an embroiderer. The low assessments, in 1319 only 20d., tell in favour of identification with the latter. On settere see Appendix.
