Footnotes

  • 1. Virge (Lat virga, OF verge) is probably a rendering of ME yerd 'rod, yard (measure)'; cf. William atte Yerde 1337 Cor 183 (juror Walbr). The surname may refer to a house with a sign of a rod or a yard, or possibly one on which a public yard-measure was fixed.
  • 2. Bonruncyn Walteri, a wealthy merchant and financier, is first mentioned as Bonus Runcinus mercator de Lumbardia 1267 Select Cases Law Merchant (Selden) II. Other instances: Bouruncinus (Baroncinus) Walteri, merchant of Lucca 1279 Pat, Bonrouncin 1283 LBA 75 (a creditor for mercery), Bonruncinus Walteri de Luk' 1302 Cl. Examples abound. See also Bond, Archaeologia XXVIII, p. 281 f. Bonruncin seems to mean 'good horse', runcin being It ronzino, OF roncin, runcin 'horse'. Sire may be an Anglicized form of It Sere, Ser 'sir, master'.
  • 3. Th. de Oxonia also as no. 52. Examples for both are given here: Th. de Oxford 1288 LBA 220 (skinner, with Th. de Oxford junior), 1291 ib. 178 (Walbr), 1301 Mayors 120 (deceased; son Thomas, probably a minor). Th. de Oxford petit 1288 LBA 220 (skinner), Th. de Oxford minor 1289 ib. 115, Th. de Oxford, skinner 1303 LBB 126. Thomas junior was not a son of Thomas senior, and it is not even certain that it was Th. senior who was dead in 1301.
  • 4. William de Nettlestede 1297 LBB 238 (repr. Walbr), 1308 Will (skinner, of St. Stephen; wife Ida, sons Roger, Thomas). Cf. 1319 S [Walbr 23, 36]. - Nettlestead K, Sr, Sf.
  • 5. John de Eynesham 1309 LBD 41 (skinner, adm. Walbr), 1311 LBB 24 (skinner), 1332 S [Walbr], J. de Aynesham 1328 LBE 233 (warden of skinners). John seems to have been enrolled late, unless the taxpayer of 1292 was an earlier namesake. - Eynsham O.
  • 6. Probably connected with no. 8.
  • 7. A possible instance is Nicholas de Norhampton 1291-2 CW 104 (owner of land near that of John le Meriner, who was of Queenhithe).
  • 8. Bartholomew Nicholas [of Dunstapl'] 1277 Chancery Var (merchant of London, wool-exporter with Thomas de Basingg [Dowg 83]), B. Nicholas de Dunstaple 1304 LBC 194 (executor of the same). Henry [no. 6] and Bartholomew may have been apprentices of no. 7 and derived their surname from him. All three were very likely skinners.
  • 9. Connected probably with Robert [no. 57], a skinner.
  • 10. William Tovy 1305 Mayors 216 (juror Walbr), 1313 LBE 18 (skinner), 1327 (1328) Will (of St. Stephen), W. Touy 1319 S [Walbr 73]. - Tovy fn from O Dan Tovi, evidenced in early London (ELPN 81).
  • 11. Thomas Peccok 1300 LBC 71 (juror Walbr). Perhaps a skinner like several of his co-jurors. - ME pecok 'peacock', a nickname.
  • 12. Ralph de Cestre 1275 RH 423 (juror Walbr), 1288 LBA 220 (skinner), R. le (sic) Cestre, skinner 1305 Will (of St. Mary Woolnoth). - Chester Chs, Db, Du.

  • 14. Thomas Suffauk 1275 RH 423 (juror Walbr), Th. de Suffolk 1283-4 LBA 82, 1297-8 LBB 245 (repr. Walbr), 1306-7 Will (skinner, of St. John Walbrook). He was a sheriff 1296-7.
  • 15. John de Oxon 1297-8 Will (skinner, of St. John Walbrook).
  • 16. Doubtless a skinner like no. 15.
  • 17. Henry de Boudene 1297 LBB 238 (repr. Walbr), 1305-6 ib. 167 (skinner), H. de Boudon 1301 Mayors 120. He was an executor of Thomas de Oxford [cf. no. 3] and married Isabella his widow (1304 LBC 197). - Bowden Le.

  • 20. Surname unexplained.

  • 23. Adam de Ely 1299-1300 Mayors 53, 63 (fishmonger), 1301 Cor 16 (a tenant in St. Mary Bothaw), 1307 LBC 157 (warden of fishmongers). - Ely Ca.
  • 24. Benedict de Bourck (Burgo) 1302 LBC 131, B. de Burgo 1308 LBB 206 (skinner), 1312 LBD 220 (broker of peltry; dead in 1314), B. de Burgo Sancti Petri, citizen of London 1308 Cl. - Peterborough Np.
  • 25. William Reyner 1298 CW 137, 1301 Cor 16, 18 (St. Mary Bothaw), 1303 LBC 123, 1319 S [Bish 8], W. Reynere 1313 Mem 108 (surety of a baker). Pestur means 'baker'.
  • 26. A furbisher, to judge by his surname.
  • 27. Perhaps Robert de Bedeford, glover 1285-6 LBA 93.
  • 28. Peter de Brauhinge 1300 Will (owner of houses in St. Swithin, St. Mary Abchurch and elsewhere). Agnes, his wife, was a daughter of Fulk de St. Edmund [no. 45]; cf. on her 1319 S [Walbr. 21]. Bartholomew, his son, was of St. Mary Abchurch (1311 Will). Peter was doubtless a bureller like Geoffrey de Brackinge (1281 LBA 45). - Braughing Hrt.
  • 29. The surname means 'dubber', 'renovator of old clothes'.
  • 30. William de Caxtone 1297-8 LBC 52 (bureller), 1305 Mayors 217 (collector Walbr), W. de Caxstone, buriller 1311 Will (owner of houses in St. Mary Abchurch). Maud his widow [1319 S, Walbr 20] was of St. Swithin. - Caxton Ca.
  • 31. Perhaps Thomas le Cordwaner 1320 LBE 127.
  • 32. For the surname cf. Robert Deneman 13th St. Aug 305, Henry Deneman, the king's carter 1320 Pat. See also Fransson 204.
  • 33. Roger de Mereworth 1304 (1324) Pat (a tenant in St. Mary Abchurch), 1310 LBD 113 (bureller of Walbr, deceased). - Mereworth K.
  • 34. John de Hatfeld, bureller 1295-6 ADA 1943 (St. Mary Abchurch), 1299-1300 Lib Cust 122. Cf. Roger de Hatfeld, bureller 1282 LBA 52, and Peter (son of John) 1319 S [Cand 45]. - Hatfield Ess, Hrt, etc. Hatfield Peverel Ess is Haffeld 1230, Affeud 1235 (PNEss).

  • 41. John de Winchester 1297-8 LBC 52 (warden of burellers), J. de Wynchester 1309-10 LBD 112 (deceased; of Walbr). Agnes his widow is Agnes de Wynton 1332 S [Walbr].
  • 42. For the surname cf. Bridge 66.
  • 43. Not to be identified.
  • 44. Thomas de Waledene 1295 LBB 235 (repr. Walbr), 1305 Mayors 217 (collector Walbr), 1310-11 LBD 251 (warden of burellers). A son of Richard de Waledene (1281-2 LBA 46, deceased). - Walden Ess, Hrt.

  • 49. John de Dunstaple 1289-90 LBA 124, J. de Donestaple 1298 LBA 184, J. de Dunstaple, skinner 1307 Will (of St. Mary Bothaw or St. Swithin). He was a sheriff 1295-6, Chamberlain 1298 ff., alderman of Walbrook 1293-1307. - Dunstable Bd.
  • 50. Perhaps a chandler, but his place in a long series of skinners may indicate that he was a skinner.
  • 51. Roger de York 1289, 1291 LBA 115, 131, 1298 Will (skinner; a tenant in St. John Walbrook). The surname was originally written Jork, but a t was added above the line with a caret between r and k. The J and k look rather like N and h respectively and may have been so read by the corrector, who took Northampton to be meant.
  • 52. See no. 3.
  • 53. John le Mareschal de Walebrock (-broke, -brok) 1297 LBB 65, 1304-5 ib. 148 (a debitor with John de Cornewayle, skinner), J. le Mareschal 1319 S [Walbr 53], J. le Mareschal de Stradham 1328 (1329) Will (of St. John Walbrook). Apparently from Streatham Sr or Stretham Ca and a skinner.
  • 55. Henry le Mareschal 1301 Cor 18 (surety Walbr). Perhaps connected with no. 53.
  • 56. Dencastel may be a form of Doncaster YW. If so, possibly William de Donecastre 1300 f. Mayors 85, 113, 119 (a woolmonger), 1315 Pat (King's merchant).
  • 57. Robert Persone 1288-9 LBA 112 (skinner), 1301 LBC 88 (furs of his seized for 8s. of tallage), 1311 ADA 11548 (skinner of Walbr), R. Personn 1319 S [Dowg 3], R., called Person, skinner 1327 (1342-3) Will (of St. John Walbrook). Cf. p. 88. - ME persone 'parson', a nickname.

  • 59. Andrew de Staunford 1302 LBB 122, 1306 ib. 177 (skinner), 1319 Will (of St. John Walbrook; wife Emma, on whom see 1319 S, Dowg 37). - Stamford or Stanford (common).

  • 61. Robert de Waldegrave 1286 ADA 1945 (executor of Albred de Pelham of St. Mary Abchurch), 1291 Mem 27, 1292 LBC 7. Perhaps a skinner like Geoffrey de Waldegrave (1283 LBA 69). - Walgrave Np.
  • 62. If Henecoc can have been a hypocoristic form of John, very likely identical with John de Coton, skinner [1319 S, Walbr 66]. - Coton, Cotton Ca, Np, etc.
  • 63. Anselm de Thele 1291-2 LBA 190 (part owner of a house in St. John Walbrook). Probably a skinner. Cf. William de Thele, merchant 1292 Will (of St. Mary Woolchurch), Henry de Thele, skinner 1308 Will (of Walbrook). - Theale Brk or Stanstead St. Margaret Hrt (olim often Thele).
  • 64. Felip Lenfant 1288-9 LBA 112, Philip Lenfaunt, skinner 1309-10 LBD 104 (adm.), Ph. Lefaunt 1312 LBB 47. Philip of 1309-10 had been an apprentice of William Lenfaunt at least from 1291 and had long borne the burdens of the City; this is an evident case of late admission. He doubtless took over the surname of William, his master (1293 Will), who was of St. Swithin. - ME enfaunt 'child' (c. 1450), faunt 'child, young person' (14th cent.), from OF enfant.
  • 65. Robert de Paris 1296 LBC 23 (next after no. 44), 1307 LBB 197 (tailor, resident near Bucklersbury, which is partly in Walbr), Master R. de Parys, tailor 1299 LBC 47, R. de Parys 1300 LBC 71 (juror Walbr).

  • 68. Zindene for Thindene. - Finedon Np.
  • 69. William de Red 1282 Selden 15, 1299-1300 LBC 60 (M. P.), W. Red senior & junior 1288 LBA 220 (skinners), W. de Reed 1297 LBB 238 (repr. Walbr), W. de Reed (Rede), skinner 1310 Will (of St. Stephen). William junior may be the taxpayer of 1292. - Reed Hrt or Rede Sf.
  • 70. Possibly William de Bertone 1299 LBC 47, W. de Bartone, baker 1325-6 Cor 143 (juror Walbr). - Barton (common).
  • 72. Gilbert atte Hirst 1304 LBB 141, G. atte Herst 1305 Mayors 210 (perhaps of St. Mary Woolchurch), G. atte Hurst 1316 LBE 19 (witness in a case concerning a son of no. 67). Perhaps skinners. - Herstmonceux Sr, Hurst K, etc.
  • 75. William Priour, cossun (horsemonger) 1281 LBB 5 (surety with Nicholas le Barbur near Walebrock), W. Prior 1300 LBC 71 (juror Walbr). - 'The prior', a nickname.
  • 76. Michael, son of John Tholosan 1277 Pat, M. Tholosan 1311 LBB 31, M. de Tholosan 1312 Will (owner of a capital tenement in St. Mary Woolchurch). He was the eldest son of John de Tolesan, who by his will of 1279-80 left to Michael his great seld in the Drapery. John was probably a son of John Tolesan, draper, alderman, Mayor 1252-3, dead 1259. Michael was very likely a draper. - Le Toulousain (olim pagus Tolosanus), the district round Toulouse.
  • 77. Master Stephen the surgeon 1305 Mayors 225. Cf. 1319 S [Walbr 2].
  • 78. William de Wulchirchawe 1293 LBC 13, W. de Wulchurchehawe 1297 Lib Cust 108 (woolmonger), W. de Wollecherchehawe 1301 Will. He held the seld called Wyncestre Selde in St. Michael Vintry, where merchants of Andover and other places came to traffic (LBC 13 f.). He was a son of Master William de Wlchirchehawe, a woolmonger, whose will was enrolled in 1285. Wulchirchawe means 'the enclosure (OE haga) round the church of St. Mary Woolchurch'.
  • 79. William le Poleter 1302 Mayors 138. He had lent money to a son of Roger de Shorne [BroadSt 4] at Nogente in Artois. He was perhaps a poulterer. Cf. Roger le Polter 1319 S [Walbr 13].
  • 80. William le Lung 1292 LBA 139 (skinner), 1300 Cor 8 (surety of no. 82).
  • 81. Thomas Broun 1299 LBC 55 (warden of the Poultry with John de Sabricheworth and Adam Broun), Th. Brun 1299-1300 Mayors 58 (juror with the same). Evidently a poulterer. The Poultry adjoins Walbrook.
  • 82. Roger de Coumbe 1300 LBC 71 (juror Walbr), 1301 Cor 8 (St. Mary Woolchurch). Hardly identical with R. de Combe, feliper 1284 LBA 160 (a tenant in Bill). - Co(o)mbe (common).
  • 83. Nicholas de Jernemue 1318 LBE 94, N. de Gernemuthe 1320 ib. 127, N. de Yernemuthe 1319 S [Walbr 39], N. de Jernemewe 1322 Cor 63 (St. Stephen), N. de Jernemuth 1323 Will. No doubt a merchant, perhaps a skinner. - Yarmouth Nf.
