  • 1. Virge (Lat virga, OF verge) is probably a rendering of ME yerd 'rod, yard (measure)'; cf. William atte Yerde 1337 Cor 183 (juror Walbr). The surname may refer to a house with a sign of a rod or a yard, or possibly one on which a public yard-measure was fixed.
  • 2. Bonruncyn Walteri, a wealthy merchant and financier, is first mentioned as Bonus Runcinus mercator de Lumbardia 1267 Select Cases Law Merchant (Selden) II. Philip of 1309-10 had been an apprentice of William Lenfaunt at least from 1291 and had long borne the burdens of the City; this is an evident case of late admission.   • 76. Michael, son of John Tholosan 1277 Pat, M. Tholosan 1311 LBB 31, M. de Tholosan 1312 Will (owner of a capital tenement in St. Mary Woolchurch). He was the eldest son of John de Tolesan, who by his will of 1279-80 left to Michael his great seld in the Drapery. John was probably a son of John Tolesan, draper, alderman, Mayor 1252-3, dead 1259. Michael was very likely a draper. - Le Toulousain (olim pagus Tolosanus), the district round Toulouse.

  • 78. William de Wulchirchawe 1293 LBC 13, W. de Wulchurchehawe 1297 Lib Cust 108 (woolmonger), W. de Wollecherchehawe 1301 Will. He held the seld called Wyncestre Selde in St. Michael Vintry, where merchants of Andover and other places came to traffic (LBC 13 f.). He was a son of Master William de Wlchirchehawe, a woolmonger, whose will was enrolled in 1285. Wulchirchawe means 'the enclosure (OE haga) round the church of St. Mary Woolchurch'.

John Greylonde, apprentice of Robert Graylaund, was admitted in 1311 (LBD 149); he had stood with Robert for 8 years from 1288. Robert was clearly a fishmonger. - Cf. Bridge 50.
