Vestry Minutes, Sep. 1593; "It was before [certain vestrymen] agreed yt daniell Stocken of westm' should kill the dogges of this p'ishe, And to Allowe unto him for killinge of eu'y dogges ijd." This was a traditional complement of the plague, the animals being "very apt cattell to carry the infection.' The Minutes also record the appointment of "searchers" in July, and the receipt of various subscriptions "toward the Relyff of the vyceted popell." The Cecil family were most regular in their generosity.

  • 26. In Jan. 1588–9 the Vestry Minutes record that "we the Viccar maisters And Churchwardens" have chosen Nich. Bedworth to be parish clerk. It appears that, in June 1588, the Vestry had removed from that post Forrest who had "been detected of much lewdness." The Bishop of London declared this action null as being contrary to his jurisdiction and in defiance of an order issued by him (Gibson's Codex II, p. 1478). Forrest was then "judicially deprived of the place...by sentence given by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners" (1596. 15 Oct. Calendar of Cecil Papers). On Bedworth's death in Sep. 1596 (p. 480), Forrest unsuccessfully endeavoured to regain his place.
