He and his wife Emma, who was admitted in 1471 (135) and is among deaths for 1502 (409), were left bequests in the will of Richard Clyff rector of St George's in 1492 (PROB 11/9, f. 66v).
  • 5. Robert How (Hoo), junior master in 1466 (103) and 1476 (179); a trustee of the fraternity's property in 1473 (Christie, p 89); among deaths for 1492 (322). He was clerk of St Mary le Bow, who requested burial in the cemetery there, leaving a will of 2 July, proved 15 November, 1491 (PROB 11/9, f. 11v). In this, he leaves lanthorns to his sons John and Edmund, perhaps lanthorns which were hung in the openings of the steeple at his church to guide travellers to London at night in winter (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, 1, 256). In 1469 the City authorities ordained that the Bow bell should be rung nightly at nine o'clock as a curfew, thereby regulating earlier custom. It is tempting to identify Robert How (Hoo) as the 'Clarke of the Bow bell with the yellow lockes' who was teased by the City apprentices and Cheapside residents for late ringing of the bell ('For thy late ringing thy head shall have knocks'), to which 'Children of Cheape' he replied in similar verse. But Stow does not define exactly when this incident occurred after 1469. Probate of Robert's will was granted to his widow Joan, probably the clerk's wife of this name among admissions for 1470 (127). In 1469 an Elizabeth How is recorded among the deceased women (123) who may well be an earlier wife.
  • 6. Probably the William Windsor who is noted as a member of the Chapel Royal in 1463 (E 101/411/13 f. 36) and was still a clerk there on 17 August 1479 (Calendar of Patent Rolls 1476–1485, p 162). It is possible that this is the same William Windsor who appears as a lay clerk at St George's Chapel Windsor from 1483–9: see R Bowers' unpublished list of Windsor musicians deposited in the archives of St George's. A move there would help to explain the lack of any reference to the death of this clerk on BR.
  • 7. Junior master in 1476 (179), senior master in 1494 (332), and among deaths for 1497 (361). William Appleby was parish clerk of St Benet Fink. In his will of 2 May, proved 27 May, 1496 he requested burial in the parish churchyard there and mentions his wife Joan, who is among admissions for 1494 (335), together with an unmarried daughter Alice (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 127r).
  • 8. Among deaths for 1481 (229). Richard Whaplode, citizen and fishmonger, requested burial within the porch of St Margaret, Fish Street Hill by his will of 5 March 1477, proved 2 October 1480 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 308v). He left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul. A Joan Whaplode was admitted with him in 1457 (52) but Julian is named as his wife and executrix in his will and she survived him.
  • 9. Perhaps the William Pynder, citizen and brewer, who requested burial in St Mary Woolchurch by his will of 15 October, proved 23 October, 1459 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 285v). His wife Joan acted as an executor and a Joan Pynder is among deaths for 1465 (102). A William Pindyn, who may be identical with him, appears among deaths for 1459 (60).
  • 10. Among deaths for 1473 (157). Probably the John Frecok named as the son of Richard Frecok in his will proved 7 October 1468 (PROB 11/5, f. 191v), who is also among admissions for 1457 (51).
  • 11. Among deaths for 1464 (94). Probably the Robert Barrett (Baret), citizen and vintner, who requested burial in St Mary Woolnoth by his will of 20 May, proved 8 June, 1464 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 358v). His wife Margery is mentioned there and a Margery Barrett was admitted with Robert in 1457 (52)
  • 12. Among deaths for 1480 (222). Reynold, a citizen and dyer, requested burial in the church of All Hallows the Less by his will of 6 August 1479, proved 28 January 1480 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 287r). Among other bequests, he left 12d to the Pappey fraternity and 20d to the parish clerks' fraternity. His wife Elizabeth, mentioned there, was admitted with him in 1457 (52).
  • 13. Among deaths for 1458 (54). Probably the Walter Drope, citizen and butcher, who requested burial in the church of St Nicholas Shambles by his will of 29 July, proved 11 August, 1458 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 253v). His wife Joan is mentioned there and a Joan Drope is also among deaths for 1458 (54). For the Drope family see Thrupp, p 337.
  • 14. Among deaths for 1469 (including entries for 1468) (123). Probably the Richard Frecock, fletcher and common councilman during the 1460s, who lived in Bridge ward in 1456 (Tucker). He had property in Penshurst, Kent and elsewhere and asked for burial with his children in the churchyard of St Magnus Martyr by his will of 19 September, proved 7 October, 1468 (PROB 11/5, f. 191v). His wife Isobel, mentioned in his will, survived him and an Isobel Frecock was admitted with Richard above (52).
  • 15. Among deaths for 1469 (including entries for 1468) (123). Thomas Frary, citizen and hatter, asked to be buried in the cemetery of St Mildred Bread Street and left 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity in his will of 2 May, proved 1 July, 1468 (PROB 11/5, f. 183r). The will also mentions his daughter Maud Gegge, widow, who is among admissions for 1469 (122).
  • 16. Among deaths (as William Braybroke) for 1473 (157). A citizen and fishmonger, he asked for burial in the porch of St Margaret New Bridge Street, where his parents were buried, by his will of 30 (?)August, proved 4 November, 1472 (PROB 11/6, f. 49v). He left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity. His wife Margaret, mentioned in his will, is apparently among admissions for 1473 (154).

A William Child, who requested burial in the cemetery of St Benet Paul's Wharf, and whose wife was named Agnes, left a will (no probate) of 16 June 1457 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 220r). An Agnes Child is among admissions before 1449 (5).
  • 23. Parish clerk of St Martin Ludgate. By his will of 14 October, proved 24 November, 1457, Nicholas Bramble requested burial in the church and left 3s 4d to the high altar there. He bequeathed property in Essex and his residuary estate for life to his wife Joan which was to be sold after her death to establish a chantry for the souls of himself, his family and benefactors at St Martin's (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 234r).
  • 24. A William Tredgold, citizen and tallowchandler, requested burial in the cemetery of St Peter Cornhill by his will of 1 October 1454, proved 3 February 1458 (Guild- hall MS 9171/5, f. 239r).
  • 25. These last entries in a different hand apparently relate to later years, and mainly to 1460, as the deaths of Richard Walter, Edmund Spencer and Richard Philip are all recorded again under that year on BR (68). Richard Walter is clearly the citizen and ironmonger of St Audoen who requested burial in the church of the Greyfriars in London as he left 13s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity by his will (no probate, incomplete administration) of 24 May 1460 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 302r).
  • 26. This later entry apparently relates to the Edmund Spencer who also appears among deaths for 1460 (62). He is clearly the citizen and cofferer of St Mary Colechurch who requested burial in the church of St Thomas of Acre (where his late wife Ellen was buried) as he left 6s 8d for the 'augmentation and reparation' of the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 10 September, proved 4 November, 1460 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 301v).
  • 27. The identifiable deaths cluster in the year 1458, so the masters must have held office from Ascension Day in this year. No admissions are recorded.
  • 28. Richard Petworth, BCnL and BCL, who is known to have served as Cardinal Beau- fort's secretary between 1415 and 1435. He died between 6 July 1458, when his will was drawn up, and November 1458 (Emden, BRUO to 1500). Petworth requested burial at the north end of the high altar in the church of St Mary Magdalen, Southwark and left 20s to the Fraternity of St Nicholas (PROB 11/4, f. 104r). He was apparently a native of Petworth, Sussex, as he left five marks to the church there Petworth's entry is duplicated at the top of f. 6v, where the scribe apparently began to write the entries for this year, before abandoning the attempt, perhaps because there was insuf- ficient space to enter all the names. This explanation was first put forward by Dr Roger Bowers in an unpublished note, although the dating of these years is ours. It is just possible that this second entry refers to the Richard Selly alias Petworth, a monk of Westminster Abbey, whose death has been fixed by Barbara Harvey between April and September 1461 (Westminster Abbey Muniments 19442). However, he is not known to have been a graduate and therefore styled 'magister'.
  • 29. As he appears at the head of the laity immediately after the priests, he may possibly be the Stephen Forster, fishmonger, alderman 1444–58, sheriff 1444 and mayor 1454. This citizen left a will of 4 December, proved 27 December, 1458 and requested burial in the church of St Botolph Billingsgate (PROB 11/4, f. 110r).
  • 30. Not clearly identifiable, but perhaps a member of the merchant family of this name based in London and Bristol (see Thrupp, p 328 and DNB sub William Canynges).
  • 31. Presumably the William Andrew who was parish clerk of St Botolph Aldgate, where he is noted in 1452 (Mc Murray, Index). In his will of 29 August, proved 25 September, 1458, he requested burial in the cemetery of that church next to where the body of his late wife Joan lay (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 257v). She is probably the Joan Andrew among deaths for 1449 (27). A later wife Joan survived him and acted as his executrix. He also left a range of household goods to a daughter, Alice.
  • 32. A William Steward (Styward), parishioner of St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey, left a will of 3 October 1457, proved 17 October 1458 (PROB 11/4, f. 196v).
  • 33. Presumably the Luke Brown, citizen and brewer, who requested burial in the church of St Michael le Querne by his will of 8 September, proved 4 December, 1458 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 263r). His wife Isobel is mentioned there and an Isobel Brown was admitted in 1454 (36) and appears among deaths for 1462 (75).
  • 34. A John Dalton, citizen and barber, of St Peter Cornhill, left 20s to Richard Pollard the parish clerk for acting as executor of his will of 14 February, proved 12 April, 1459 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 271v).
  • 35. Richard Snell, citizen and paviour, requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Nicholas Shambles by his will of 'Monday next' after the feast of St Thomas the Apostle (21 December) 1458, proved 13 March 1459 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 271r). He left 4d each to the parish clerks there for attendance at his exequies and 3s 4d to the wardens of the parish clerks' fraternity for the use of the guild. He also left 4d to the clerk of the church of 'St Andrew'.

  • 37. Probably the Margaret Hatherley, third wife of John Hatherley, alderman, who predeceased him. She is mentioned as already dead in his will of 12 April 1459 (Husting Roll 195 (44), ed Sharpe, Calendar of wills, II, 552). Hatherley (14, 75) and his previous wives Isobel and Joan all appear on BR.
  • 38. Presumably the Robert Rooke, formerly vicar of St Lawrence Jewry, who left 10s to the parish clerks' fraternity and 20s to the fraternity of London rectors for attend- ance at his funeral by his will of 9 November 1453, proved December 1458 (PROB 11/4, f 108v).
  • 39. The entries here for 1459 follow those for 1460 in the MS, but have apparently been transposed when the list was copied up. The dating of this year is discussed in the Introduction.
  • 40. The Thomas Humberston admitted in 1455 would not have been a member of the fraternity for long enough to be the senior master in 1459. The latter was a trustee of parish clerks' property in 1473 (Christie, p 89) and is perhaps the individual of this name who is among deaths for 1485 on BR (in a list of dead laity which however, includes priests and clerks) (264).

  • 49. Among additional deaths for 1462 and (?)1463 (89). Alderman 1446–61; MP London 1453, 1455; KB 1461 (Beaven, II, 9; Thrupp, p 328). Thrice master of the Mercers between 1450 and 1461, Cantelow requested burial in the church of St Mary Magdalen Milk Street by his will of 21 February 1463, proved 11 May 1464 (PROB 11/5, f. 28r). His wife Elizabeth, mentioned there, was admitted with him (59).
  • 50. Among deaths for 1484 (256). He is the Thomas Ostrich, citizen and haberdasher, noted as a common councilman for Cripplegate ward in 1481 (Tucker). In his will of 24 July 1483, proved 16 March (?) 1484, he requested burial in the Trinity chapel of St Alban Wood Street and left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity 'of the which I am a brother and my wiff a sister' to pray for his soul, his parents' and all Chris- tian souls (PROB 11/7, f. 161r). His wife Anne, mentioned there, is not recorded on BR, but his father Thomas Ostrich, another haberdasher, is among deaths for 1452 (31).
  • 51. Among deaths for 1459 (60). Perhaps the John Cotforde, mercer, who requested burial in the chancel of St Thomas the Apostle, by his will of 6 April 1459 proved 23 November 1460 (PROB 11/4, f. 162v).
  • 52. Among deaths for 1474 (169). Probably the Henry Narburgh, squire, citizen and baker of St Edmund the King, in which church he wished to be buried, who left a will of 6 September, proved 12 November, 1473 (PROB 11/6, f. 85r). He also asked for a trental of masses to be celebrated in the church of the Greyfriars after his burial, and Stow (Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 321) notes a memorial there to him and his father John Narburgh, Treasurer of England. Henry's wife Agnes, also mentioned in his will, is apparently the woman of this name also among admissions for 1459 (59).
  • 53. This is the first occasion on which the names of the clerks' wives are separately listed.
  • 54. Among deaths for 1463 (83). Katherine Otley was the widow of Robert Otley, alderman and grocer, who died in 1436 (Beaven, II, 7 and Thrupp, p 358). She was Otley's second wife and survived him. Previously to this marriage, she had been married at various times to John French and Bartholomew Seman, goldsmith. By her will of 19 September 1463, proved 6 July 1464, she requested burial in the Lady chapel of St John Zachary. She left 6s 8d (with a further 13s 4d for attendance at her exequies) to the parish clerks' fraternity, as well as bequests to the Pappey and Sixty Priests' fraternities (PROB 11/5, f. 57r).
  • 55. Among deaths (as Alice Illingworth) for 1467 (116). Alice, relict of Thomas Chalton and widow of Richard Illingworth, alderman, Kt, requested burial with her late husband Thomas in the chapel of St Thomas the Martyr within St Alban Wood Street by her will of 3 July, proved 19 October, 1467 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 10r).

  • 68. Cecily, wife of Richard, 3rd Duke of York, afterwards Plantagenet, who died at the Battle of Wakefield, 30 December 1460 (GEC Complete Peerage). Cecily died 31 May 1495, aged 80, at Berkhamsted, and was buried with her husband at Fotheringhay.

Although he had no obvious connection with London, the dates of death seem to match those of the individual on BR.

  • 78. Among deaths for 1488 (294). Richard Teddington, monk of Westminster Abbey, was admitted there in the year Michaelmas 1428–9. He celebrated his first mass during 1431–2, served as treasurer 1463–(?)1467 and died in 1487 (Pearce, p 143). Teddington was also a member of the Assumption Guild at Westminster, where he appears in the guild accounts for 1474–7 among Westminster Abbey Muniments (f. 16v).

His wives Katherine (admissions for 1462 below (72)) and Margaret and his brother Nicholas are also mentioned there.

She was previously married to Lord Wenlok and subsequently married Sir John Say.

Richard Denham was admitted to Eton as a King's scholar in 1442 aged 12; scholar 1445 and fellow 1448, of King's College, Cambridge; MA by 1454, vacated before 1456 (Emden, BRUC to 1500). He was subsequently rector of St Mary Matfellon, Whitechapel from 1460 until his death which had occurred by October 1464 (Hennessy, p 457).

  • 103. Among deaths (as Thomas Keyte) for 1496 (354). Presumably therefore the indi- vidual of this name who was a gentleman of the Chapel Royal by 1466 and still in post until 1495–6 when he died. He left a bequest of 6s 8d for the repair of St Margaret's Westminster. See Kisby, Royal Household Chapel, Appendix 1.

  • 106. Among deaths for 1486 (275). Probably the William Stoker (Stokker), alderman 1470–85, Kt 1471, master of the Drapers 1479 and mayor 1485 (Beaven, II, 14; Thrupp, p 367) who died 28 September 1485. His will was proved 16 September 1486 (PROB 11/7, f. 198r).
  • 107. Among deaths for 1467 (115). Perhaps the Thomas Whaplode, citizen and tailor, who requested burial in the church of St Margaret Fish Street Hill by his will of 31 August 1467, proved 14 May 1468 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 28r). His wife Edith, who survived him, is mentioned there and an Edith Whaplode is among admissions before 1449 (9).
  • 108. Among deaths for 1475 (177). John Burton, citizen and tailor, was buried in the church of St Margaret Fish Street Hill according to his will of 8 November 1473, proved 14 June 1474 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 157v). Burton's wife Beatrice who was admitted with him in 1462 (74), left money to the parish clerks. His son John Burton, clerk, mentioned in his father's will, may be the parish clerk of St Sepul- chre among admissions for 1473 (152) and deaths for 1493 (331), who was junior master in 1486 (266).
  • 109. Among deaths for 1475 (177). John Emelyn (Emlyn), citizen and upholder, requested burial in the church of the Austin Friars, London, by his will of 13 February 1475, proved 20 September 1476 (PROB 11/6, f. 194r) and provided that six priests and the [parish] clerks of St Olave Jewry and St Peter le Poer should be present at the dirige and mass at the time of his funeral. He bequeathed £20 to the parish clerks' fraternity to maintain the observance of his annual obit at St Olave Jewry with a sung dirige and mass performed by four priests and a clerk, who were additionally to be paid 4d each to pray for his soul and the souls of his wives. Emelyn also left the fraternity a piece of silver weighing 6oz and six silver spoons each weighing 6oz. His wives are named as (i) Katherine (not on BR) (ii) Joan (among deaths for 1473 (158)) and (iii) another Joan who survived him, among admissions for 1475 (175).
  • 110. Presumably the wife of John Godyng. He is among admissions before 1449 (15) and deaths for 1463 (83). Isobel is mentioned as his wife in his will of 29 May, proved 7 June, 1463 (PROB 11/5, f. 1r). She was the relict of John Carter and her son Richard Carter was appointed there as one of Godyng's executors.
  • 111. Among deaths for 1477 (195). Beatrice Burton, widow, requested burial in the church of St Margaret Fish Street Hill under the stone where her husband was interred by her will of 16 October 1476, proved 17 March 1477 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 202r). She left 3s 4d to the [parish clerks'] Fraternity of St Nicholas and 20d to the Pappey fraternity. Her son, John Burton, clerk, mentioned there, is perhaps the parish clerk of St Sepulchre (152, 266, 331). Her husband Richard was admitted with her in 1462 (73) and she acted as executrix of his will (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 157v).
  • 112. The name of Master Richard Petworth (54) is repeated at this point in the text, but then abandoned and the folio re-used to list the deaths for 1462.
  • 113. This name is followed by an abbreviation which is not readily decipherable.
  • 114. Sir John Fray, Kt, who requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Bartholomew by the Exchange in his will of 22 March 1458, proved 23 July 1461 (PROB 11 4, f. 175r). He was perhaps entered posthumously at the behest of his wife and daugh- ters, admitted to the fraternity in 1462 (69).
