STAFFORD. Inq. 8 October, 10 Edward II.
Alveton. The castle with its members, viz.—Bredeleye, Farley, Cotene, Wutton, Deneston [alias Denston], Staunton, Strongeshull [alias Streingeshull], Buckenhale, Fenton and Balderdeleye (extents given), held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee.
Elizabeth late his wife is pregnant of a living child. His daughters, Joan aged 13, Elizabeth aged 10, and Margery aged 7, are his next heirs.
SALOP. Inq. 24 October, 10 Edward II.
Stoke upon Tyrne. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of 1/2 knight’s fee.
Lodelowe. A moiety of the town (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of 1/4 knight’s fee.
Elizabeth his wife is pregnant, but unless it shall be of a male child, his heirs are his daughters as above.
WARWICK. Inq. 23 October, 10 Edward II.
Braundone. The manor with its members (extent given), held of the earl of Warwick in chief by service of a knight’s fee.
Flekkenho. The hamlet, a member of Braundone, held by Walter Coyni for life by the demise of the said Theobald, doing 40s. yearly.
Bretford hamlet. Geoffrey de Chaumbreleyn enfeoffed the nuns Seburga and Aoemy of 150a. of his demesne, and of the meadow between Bretford and the mill-pond of Merstone, and of all the lands between these four boundaries, viz.—Musewellesshiche and Fosse between the river Afvam and the grove of Burtele, with common at Braundone for all necessaries; and the said nuns, with his assent, thereof enfeoffed the prior, &c. of Kyneliwurth, who delivered the same to Richard the clerk of Bretford for life, rendering 1 mark yearly, and the said Richard by collusion delivered to the lord of Braundone of that time all the above, which of right belong to the church of Kenellewrthe.
Heirs as above, but Joan aged 12 years.
Memorandum (by the escheator?). Concerning the hamlet of Bretford the jury would not deliver any other form of inquisition than the above, but the said Theobald entered upon that hamlet after the death of his father, in the king’s 3rd year, as his inheritance, as was found by the inquisitions then returned into the chancery, and has now died seised thereof, claiming such estate therein for himself and his heirs.

Neubold. The manor (extent given) held of the king in chief by service of 1/10 knight’s fee.

William Aleyn (?) of Staunton, aged 52, says that the said Joan was born at Wotton and baptized in the church of St. Mary, Onebury, and was 14 years of age on 9 August last; and this he knows because he had a daughter, Sibyl, born on the same day.
John de Boudler (?), aged 44, says the like, and knows it because on the feast of the Assumption in the same year, Hugh de Mortimer of Richard’s Castle was buried at Worcester, of whom (he held?) his land.
William son of Hugh, aged 70, says the like, and knows it because John Scot came and told him of the birth, and he gave him a sparrow-hawk for the news.
Thomas de Overton, aged 42, says the like, and knows it because he has a brother, Richard, who was born at Overton in the same week.
William de Sibeton, aged 44, says the like, and knows it because John de Sibeton, his brother, granted 1/2 virgate of land to Adam de Sibeton for 14 years at the feast of the Assumption following in the same year, and now it has come to his own hands as heir of the said John.
Richard de Affecote, aged 50, says the like, and knows it because he made a dovecote at the feast of Easter following in the same year.
Robert de Staunton, clerk, aged 41, says the like, and knows it because at the feast of St. Michael following in the same year, he had a daughter, Alice, born.
Walter de Aventre, aged 53, says the like, and knows it because Margaret de Mortimar (?) stayed at Staunton Lascy in the same year from the feast of St. Michael, with her household (familia), until the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist following.
Roger Church (?) aged 46, says the like, and knows it because Nicholas his father died in the same year at the feast of All Saints.
Roger … . hale, aged 60, says the like, and knows it because at Christmas (?) in the same year he married Sibyl his wife, who still lives.
William de Aventre, aged 40, says the like, and knows it because he was then servant of Agnes de Lodelowe, and made a dovecote at Eweldon for her use.
Walter Tope (?), aged 48, says the like, and knows it because he had 1/2 virgate of land from John de Saberton, for 12 years, and on the same day ……when the said Joan was born.
The escheator warned Isabella, queen of England, the king’s consort, but no one came.
Partition of two parts of the said lands into four parts, viz.—between Joan whom Thomas de Furnivall, the younger, has married, Elizabeth, and Margery, daughters of the said Theobald by his first wife, and——his daughter by Elizabeth, late the wife of John de Burgo, and sister of Gilbert de Clare, late earl of Gloucester and Hertford, his second wife, made at the suit of the said Thomas and Joan after the proof of age of the said Joan, viz.—
The castle and manor of Alveton, with its members.
The castle and manor of Webbele, excepting 9l. rent from free tenants.
The castle and manor of Ewyas Lacy, excepting 10l. 9s. rent.
And the manors of Stoke upon Tyrne and La Hethe, lands in Ludelawe, and the said 9l. rent from Webbele, and 10l. 9s. rent from Ewyas Lacy.
Writ of scire facias to the escheator to warn the said Thomas and Joan to be in the chancery on the octave of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist next, on the petition of Bartholomew de Burgherssh who has married Elizabeth daughter and one of the heirs of the said Theobald, who has proved her age, to show cause why the castle and manor of Alveton with members &c. should not be resumed into the king’s hand and extended again, 11 June 13 Edward II.
Writ of scire facias to the same effect; endorsed with a memorandum that it was agreed before the archbishop of Canterbury and others of the king’s council, that the said castle, manor &c. should be again extended, 13 August 14 Edward II.

Forde. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of rendering 12l. at the king’s exchequer (yearly), and there is a pension to be paid thence to Nicholas de Wethergrove of 10l. yearly for life.

Red Castle (Rubeum Castrum.) with its members Ithtefeld, Quekeshale, Lokkeswode and Gravenhunger (extent given), held jointly by the said Nicholas and Joan his wife, countess of Lincoln, of John de Harecurt by service of 1d. yearly, of the gift of John de Kynardeseye to them and the heirs of the body of the said Nicholas.

Thlanandevery. The, town (extent given), including 78 burgesses rendering 78s., ‘tolcestre,’ and toll of the fair.
Medevey alias Methevey, Landusant, Gwynvey alias Wynvey, and Mainorvaban, in the comote of Perveyth. The mainors (extents given), including ‘Doueroth’ (?), and cheminage upon Sarnhyr, and leyrwyte.

Lanymdever[y]. The castle and borough (full extent given) including meadows by Lanveyr (?) and at Habergevel, and forests called Cruckebleith and Kevengelenarth in the comote of Hirvryn, and lands, &c. in Melindressathney, Maynor Lanadeusant, Maynorvaban, Maynor Wynvey and Maynor Methevey, in the comote of Perveth, with ‘Douerith’ and leirewite, and four smithies (fabr’) in Iskennen, held of the king in chief by knights’ service, and doing suit at the county (court)of Kermerdyn.

Oterhampton. The hamlet (extent given), held of Philip de Columbariis by service of 1 1/4 knight’s fee, rendering 21 1/2d. yearly, and doing suit at his court in his manor of Staweye; and 4s. yearly rent held of Baldwin Malet by service of doing suit at his court of Enedemere.
Puriton. The hamlet (extent given), held of the said Philip by service of 1/5 knight’s fee.
Nywenham. The hamlet (extent given), held of Robert son of Payn by service of a knight’s fee.

Afterwards on 16 February, 10 Edward II, came John Inge, the king’s sub-escheator in co. Somerset, and Thomas de Marleberg and said that Joan late the wife of the said Thomas, who was pregnant at the time of his death, had borne a son called John, who ought to succeed his father.
Writ of certiorari to the escheator, to enquire whether the said Joan was pregnant at the time of the death of the said Thomas or not, and if so, what is the age of the child, &c., 20 February, 10 Edward II.
SOMERSET. Inq. 10 March, 10 Edward II.
The said Joan was pregnant by the said Thomas at the time of his death on Friday the feast of St. Barnabas last, and she bore a son, named John, on 2 December following, who is 14 weeks old, and next heir of the said Thomas.
