Duene. A tenement held of the king in chief as parcel of the barony.
Laurence his son, aged 23, is his next heir.

Sutton Walrond. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief as parcel of the barony of Dene, by the demise of Nicholas de Sancto Mauro to him and Eva sometime his wife and to the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Reginald.
Laurence their son, aged 23 and more, is next heir of the said Reginald and Eva.

Istgrimstede. A moiety of the township (extent given), held of the king in chief as parcel of a moiety of the barony of Duene.
Knyghteton. 26l. yearly rents from the manor, which Master Richard de Clare holds for life of the heir of the said Reginald by the demise of the said Reginald, and he of the abbess of Wilton, by service of 1/4 knight’s fee.
Duene. The manor (extent given), held, of the gift of the said Nicholas, as above, of the king in chief by barony.
Ubeton. The manor (extent given), held, of the gift of the said Nicholas, as above, of the abbess of Wilton by service of 1/4 knight’s fee.

Chikeneye. The manor (extent given), held jointly by the said John and Joan his wife, of the enfeoffment of Remigius parson of Meltone by fine levied in the king’s court, of the king in chief as of the honour of Peverel by service of 1 knight’s fee.
Hugh Peverel, aged 19 and more, is his next heir.

Great Melton. The manor (full extent given with names of tenants), including 5 qr. of barley rent in Sweynesthorp, and the patronage of the church of All Saints, Great Melton, held of the king in chief as of the honour of Peverel by service of 3 knights’ fees.
He died on 14 Oct. in the year abovesaid.
Melton. A capital messuage, 20a. arable, 1/2a. meadow, a pasture, rents &c. held by the said John and Joan his wife, of the enfeoffment of Bartholomew de Redham her father ….., and they are held of the heir of the said John Peverel by service of 1/4 knight’s fee.
Skothowe. A third part of the manor (extent given), held jointly, as above, of the inheritance of the said Joan, of the abbot of St. Benet’s, Hulme, by service of 16s. 8d., and 16 qr. 5 bus. of barley yearly.
And the said Joan is a patron of the church of All Saints, Skothow.
Brakene. The manor (extent given), held jointly, as above, together with the patronage of the church, of the enfeoffment of Remigius de Hedersore, rector of the church of Melton, by fine levied in the king’s court, to them and the heirs of the said John, of the king in chief as of the honour of Peverel by service of 1/2 knight’s fee.

Richard his son, aged 16 and more from the feast of St. Denis last, is his [next] heir.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Bernak, 5 May, 8 Edw. II.
(Unspecified.) A messuage and 4 1/2a. 1r. land held of Isabel queen of England by service of 1lb. pepper rent at her manor of Thorpel, which she holds of the king’s gift.

Melmorbi. The manor (full extent given with names of tenants), held of the king in chief by homage, and 13s. 4d. cornage yearly.
Blakhale. The manor (full extent given with names of tenants), held of the king in chief by homage, and 8s. 6d. cornage yearly.
Staynton. The manor (extent given), held of the king by homage, and 8s. cornage yearly.
Ravenesheved and Ulueton. The manors (full extents given), including free tenements in Wygeton, Waverton, and Dundraw, held of the honour of Cokermwe by homage, 5 marks cornage, and suit at the court of Cokermwe.
The said John had a sister named Christiana (?) who is dead and had a daughter named ….. who survives, aged 30; also another sister named Joan de Raygat who is dead, who had a daughter named (Joan) ……. who was married to one Nicholas Bart before the death of the said John de Wygeton; also a third sister named Florence de Wygeton who was married ….. years; also a fourth sister named Margaret who survives, aged 25 and married to Robert de Methelay; and a fifth sister named Elizabeth …. married to Geoffrey Sherwynde, who survives, aged 30; of whom, three sisters together with the issue of two sisters are his next heirs.

Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of Denise, late the wife of the said John that the escheator had taken into the king’s hand the manor of Blakehale, which she held jointly with the said John, 9 April, 8 Edw. II.
[CUMBERLAND.] Inq. Thursday after St. Barnabas, 8 Edw. II.
Blakhal. The manor (extent given with names of tenants), was held jointly for life by the said John and Denise sometime his wife, of the gift of Walter de Wygeton to them and the heirs of their bodies, by virtue whereof they were seised thereof until the 5th year of the present king when a divorce between them was pronounced (celebratum) in the court Christian of the bishop of Carlisle, since when the said Denise has had nothing therein. The said John held the manor of the king in chief by homage and 8s. 6d. cornage yearly.
Endorsed with a memorandum that the said Denise came into the chancery and claimed the said manor, but because one of the heirs of the said John alleged that she had quit-claimed the said manor, the morrow of the Assumption next was given her so that if no letter of quit-claim should then be shown by the heirs the said Denise may have seisin of the manor.
Memorandum. On which day came Walter de Kirkebrid, kinsman and one of the heirs of the said John, by his attorney Nicholas Barde who married Joan another heir, and Margaret fourth sister and an heir of the said John, into the chancery at Royston, but Florence de Wygeton the third sister, and Elizabeth the fifth sister came not. The fourth day from the said feast was given them for showing the letters of quit-claim, and because no such letters were shown, a writ of seisin of the said manor was granted to the said Denise.
Writ of dedimus potestatem recipiendi attornatos, for Elizabeth late the wife of Geoffrey de Sherewynd, one of the sisters and heirs of the said John de Wygeton, 12 July, 9 Edw. II.
Memorandum. That on Monday the eve of SS. Simon and Jude, 9 Edw. II, came into the king’s chancery Margaret daughter of John de Wygeton, and sought the lands of her said father as his next heir &c. Where-upon came Walter de Kirkebride, Joan the wife of Nicholas Barde, daughter of Joan de Reygate a sister, Florence de Wygeton a sister married to Hector Askelok, Margaret a sister married to Robert de Methelay, and Elizabeth a sister, by their attorneys, and claimed to be next heirs, for the said Margaret ought to be excluded, because a divorce was pronounced between the said John and Denise his wife, mother of the said Margaret, because of her precontract with John Paynel, by reason whereof the said Margaret is a bastard; and the said Margaret says that she was legitimate.
Whereupon a day was given &c. …. viz.:—the octave of St. Hilary.
Memorandum. On which day came the said Margaret, Walter, and Elizabeth, and because the said Margaret now says she was born in the diocese of London, the bishop was ordered to enquire the truth of the matter and certify the king without delay.
Writ, to Roger le Brabanzon and his companions, justices &c. to examine the inquisitions &c. and do right between the said Margaret and the said Walter &c. that the said John’s lands may be delivered to his next heir according to custom, 15 Dec. 9 Edw. II.

Kirkebrid, Wygeton and Dockewra. 20l. land held of the said John de Wygeton by Richard de Kirkebrid rendering 7s. 9d. for cornage yearly, suit at the court of Wygeton, and by homage and fealty.
Ulueton. 1 carucate land held by Robert de Quiterig by homage and 20d. cornage.
Little Waverton. The hamlet held by John de Malton by homage and 4s. 5 1/2d. cornage, and suit at the court of Wygeton.
Drundraw. Memorandum. That the said Walter de Wygeton came in full exchequer on the morrow of St. Hilary, 13 [Edw. II] and acknowledged the above said gift to the said John and Denise, and bound himself and his heirs thereto; and John de Luvetot father of the said Denise prayed enrolment of the said gift and acknowledgement; and they were enrolled on the rolls of Memoranda of Hilary term in the said year, and the chancellor ordered them to be enrolled at the request of the treasurer of the exchequer, which was done at Bristol on the morrow of St. Vincent in the same year.
Judgment reciting the above writ to the justices of 15 Dec. 9 Edw. II. and memoranda, and stating that the process was pending before the bishop of London from the said octave of Hilary until the quinzaine of St. John the Baptist in the king’s 14th year, on which day the bishop returned that he found the said Margaret to be the lawful daughter of the said John and not a bastard, whereupon it was considered that she should have seisin of his lands &c. This record was delivered into the chancery at Westminster, July 24 in the 14th year by the hands of Sir Henry de Scrop, chief justice.

532. ROBERT SON OF PAYN.
Writ to enquire what lands, &c., in Somerset, the said Robert held for life of the inheritance of the heirs of John de Wygeton, 28 Aug. 9 Edw. II, and duplicate.
SOMERSET. Inq. 22 Sept. 9 Edw. II.
Kynggeston by Ievele. A messuage, 1 carucate land, and 40s. rent of assize, held for life of the inheritance of the heirs of John de Wygeton, which messuage &c. are held of the heirs of Robert de Mortuo Mari, lord of Richard’s Castle, by service of 1/2 knight’s fee. The said John’s sisters are his next heirs, but their names and ages are unknown to the jury, because they dwell in cos. Cumberland and York.
SOMERSET. Inq. 23 Sept. 9 Edw. II.
Kyngeston by Ievile. A messuage and 1 carucate land, held as abovesaid. The said John had a daughter and heir Margaret, aged 24, as the jury believe, but they know nothing of any other next heirs of the said John.
Writ to the escheator to send in the inquisitions concerning the lands &c. which Robert son of Payn held for life of the inheritance of the heirs of John de Wygeton without delay, 18 Oct. 9 Edw. II.
Endorsed with return that they have been lately sent into the chancery.
