456. RICHARD, SON AND HEIR OF ROGER LOVEDAY.
Writ to Walter de Gloucester, escheator, to take the proof of age of the said Richard, who was born at Ofton and baptized in the church there, as is said, and says he is of full age, and seeks the lands &c. of his inheritance, held, of the honour of Peverel which is in the king’s hand, which are in the wardship of Fraric de Mateshale and John de Fyton, executors of the will of Simon de Bradenham, deceased, to whom Eustace de Hacche granted the same, who had the wardship by the grant of Adam de Cretyng, to whom Queen Eleanor sometime the king’s consort demised the same, who had it of the king’s grant; 23 Sept. 31 Edw. 457. JOHN, HEIR OF ROBERT WALRAND, an idiot.

GLOUCESTER. Transcript of extent made on Saturday after the Assumption, 29 Edw. I.
Cystone. The manor, which was of the said Robert and is in the king’s hand by reason of the said John’s idiocy (full extent given), including 20a. land and 1 1/2a. meadow which formerly were of the master of the hospital of St. Laurence, Bristol, 2a. meadow and 12a. pasture at Doyntone, 71a. pasture in La brech, a park of 46a., another park of 96a. called Overpark, customs called ‘wodehennes’ and ‘beinerth,’ and customers of greater and less tenure and cottars, who ought to be taxed at the will of the lord, with the advowson of the chapel, held of the heirs of William de Berkele of Dyrslee, service unknown, and there are due 2s. yearly to William Tracy for 2 1/2 virgates of land in Doyntone.

Laventen. The manor, similarly in the king’s hand (full extent given with field names and names of those who have pasturage), including pasture on the moor, pastures called Vernibrech, Smalemers, Thornes and upon Roghedone, and ‘la heye,’ and 17 customers, with their duties and privileges, after whose deaths the lord ought to have the best (meliorem) beast for a heriet, nor shall they marry son or daughter outside the manor or sell horse or ox, without licence, held of the earl of Arundel in chief, service unknown.

Yatesbyry. The manor, similarly in the king’s hand (full extent given with names of tenants &c.), including a pasture called Northlese, a pasture upon Coulewebergh, and customs and heriet &c. as above, held of the king in chief, service unknown. King Henry the king’s father gave the manor to Robert Walrand.

Winterbourne Ascertone. The manor, similarly in the king’s hand (full extent given with names of tenants), including 10a. land in the Suthfeld and Northfeld which formerly were of Reginald, rector of the chapel of Wynterbourne, by the demise of Maud Walraund, 9 1/2a. meadow at Wychford, the custody whereof William son of Walter, sometime lord of the manor, granted to Hugh de Daubeni, divers customers’ works, including carriage of the corn of the manor when it is to be sold at Salisbury, Wyltone (or) Ambresbury, heriets &c., and (the advowson) of the chapel, held of Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln, in chief by service of 1/2 knight’s fee.

Frompton. The manor, similarly held in the king’s hand (full extent given), including meadows in Holemers and Kyngmor, pastures in Enedebergh(?), Matford, ‘la Sned’(?), Wakingrave, Docham, Roghenham, Brusiemor, and in a way called Loxeweye, an alder wood called Holleye, a grove called Nethersned, an underground coalmine (carbonera) much wasted and worth 3s. 4d. yearly, divers customs, works &c., and the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief, service unknown.
SOMERSET. Transcript of extent made on Saturday after St. Bartholomew, 29 Edw. I.
Stokecurcy. The castle with the borough and its members of Wyk and Wyndyate, similarly in the king’s hand, and for the keeping of the castle belong, from divers tenants thereof, the service of an armed horseman with barded horse, a crossbowman and 6 other men on foot, armed with basinets and hauberks, for forty days, whenever summoned in time of war, at their own charges, and afterwards at the lord’s charges, if he will, during the war (full extents given), including in the borough a market every Saturday, and a fair on the feast of St. Andrew, to which no toll or perquisites belong, at ‘la Wyk’ a messuage, land and meadow at Lowelestone called Pillokesitte, pasturage in Middemor, Newelese, Lysham, Brademere, Sutherham and Hwetham, Colversplot, Haywardesgore, Broningesmede, ‘la Northamme’ by the sea, and Brodeforherthe, and a park of 120a.; at ‘la Wyndyate’ pastures at Tettehullebrigg and in Oldpark by the castle, and Hethfeld; divers customs, works &c.; and each customer of the township of Staford having geese (aucas ereas) shall give a goose called ‘lesegos’ at the Gule of August; and 12 tenants of the homage of the prioress of Stodlegh and of Simon de Craucomb, give yearly 12 slabs (sclabb’) of iron for having common of pasture for their cattle upon Cantok. The castle with the borough and the manor of Wyk are held of the king in chief, service unknown. The patronage of the priory of the monks of Stokecurcy belongs to the manor of Wyk, and they have the church of Stokecurcy to their own uses, which was of the advowson of that manor: it is a cell of the abbey of Lollay. And there are due to the prior of Stokecurcy for a tenth of the whole rent, of ancient custom, 35s. 4d. yearly; to Matthew de Forneaus for the whole tenement of Wyndyate, of ancient rent, 8s. yearly; to William Trivet for a messuage, 18a. land and 1 1/2a. 1r. meadow in Loweleston, 9s. (yearly); and at the hundred of Caneton, of custom called ‘burghrizt,’ 2 1/4d.
Knights’ fees:—
SOMERSET. Farindon. 1 knight’s fee held by William de Grindham and Remund Trivet, who each owe suit at the court of Stoke.
Chiltonekoc and Edingestone. 3 knights’ fees similarly held by William Trivet.
Knyttetone. A virgate of land held by John Brun, who shall give 2s. scutage when scutage is at 40s., and he owes suit of court.
Buriton. Richard Roland holds as much and does as much.
Hunybere. 1/2 knight’s fee held by John de Columbers.
Stokecurcy. 60a. land held by Henry and Walter Everard, who shall give 2s. 10d. scutage when &c., and owe suit of court.
Fairfeld. A virgate of land held by Margaret daughter and heir of Ralph Russell, giving 6s. for scutage &c. and owing suit of court.
[Unspecified.] 1/2 virgate of land held by Custancia Attepile, giving 6d. scutage &c.
La Sterte. A virgate of land held by Walter le Lyf, giving 12d. scutage &c. and owing suit of court.
DEVON. Spicheswyk. 1 knight’s fee held by Michael de Spycheswyk, owing suit of court.
Wanercleye. 1 knight’s fee held by Gervase de Ralegh.
High Bray. 1 knight’s fee held by Richard Flemyng.

Canyton. The hundred, similarly in the king’s hand (extent given), viz.—7s. 1d. fixed rent at the feast of the Purification called ‘horderezeld,’ 19s. 1 3/4d. rent of Hokkeday called ‘borghryst,’ 13s. 1d. rent at the feast of St. Michael called ‘austage,’ and 42s. pleas &c. of the hundred yearly.

Radeweye. The manor, similarly in the king’s hand (full extent given), including meadow in Bedmede and Wyldemor, whereof the prioress and nuns of Canygtone, who have the church to their own uses receive the herbage &c. of a tenth part, pastures at ‘la Tweyslade,’ upon the hill of Aledone and at Wygelesmore, 1a. fir wood, a custom called ‘horderyeld,’ divers works and customs, and the advowson of the priory of Canygton, to which the church is annexed, held of the king in chief, service unknown; and there are due of fixed rent and ancient custom to the prior of Stokecrosy for tithes of rent 8s. 9d. yearly, and to the hundred of Canygton for ‘hordereyeld’ 5s. 5d.
DEVON. Transcript of extent made on Friday the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, 29 Edw. I.
Potyngton. The manor, similarly in the king’s hand (extent given), viz.—a water-mill, 119s. 6d. rent, 3s. 4d. pleas &c. of court, and the advowson of the church, held of the honour of Bradenech by service of 1/2 knight’s fee.
Annexed is a transcript of extent of the manor of Couberle, co. Gloucester, which was of Sir Giles de Berkele, made on Tuesday after the Assumption, 29 Edw. I. See next number.

GLOUCESTER. Transcript of extent made on Tuesday the feast of the Assumption, 29 Edw. I.
Couberle. The manor, which came into the king’s hand by the death of the said Giles, except the lands &c. which Alice, late the wife of Nicholas de Berkele holds of the manor as dower, and except the lands &c. which Thomas le Butiler and Joan his wife hold of the manor as dower of the said Joan, (full extent given of the king’s part) including a fishpond in the garden and the advowson of the church: the whole manor is held in chief of the heirs of Robert Walrand, lords of Cistone, now in the king’s wardship, by service of 4l. yearly.
He died on the day of the Translation of St. Edward the King, 22 Edw. I. Thomas his son, aged 8 on the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last, is his next heir, whose wardship belongs to the king by reason of the idiocy of John Walrond heir of Robert Walrand.
