435. JOAN LATE THE WIFE OF GILBERT DE CLARE, SOMETIME EARL OF GLOUCESTER AND HERTFORD, THE KING’S DAUGHTER.
Writ to the escheator, because of the death of the said Joan, to take into the king’s hand all the lands &c. which were of the said Gilbert and Joan on the day the said Gilbert died, whereof the king enfeoffed the said earl and Joan for their lives, and also all the lands &c. which after the said enfeoffment have descended to the said earl’s heir, or have come by escheat or otherwise, into whosesoever hands they may have come, &c., 1 May, 35 Edw. I.
OXFORD. Extent, 14 June, 35 Edw. I.
Chadelynton. The hundred (extent given), including 10s. 4 3/4d. yearly from ‘le Ward peny,’ held by the said earl and countess at fee farm of the king in chief by the king’s enfeoffment, to hold to them for their lives and to the heirs of their bodies; which hundred will descend to the earl’s heir by hereditary right; and the king shall receive thence 110s. 2d. yearly.
Gilbert his son, aged 17, is next heir of the said Gilbert de Clare.
OXFORD. Extent, Friday after St. Barnabas, 35 Edw. I.
Swynebrok. The manor (extent given with names of tenants), including a wood within the forest of Wychewod and a several pasture called Muleham, was at one time in the seisin of John de Leghe by inheritance, who demised it to brother William Tothale, prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jersualem in England, and the bailiffs of the said earl and Joan, because of that demise made contrary to the statute, seized the same into their hands; before the said seizure it was held of the said earl, and he and the said Joan held it of the king in chief as a member of the manor of Schipton, service unknown.
Gilbert de Clare, aged 17 on 11 May last, is next heir of the said earl and Joan.
OXFORD. Extent, 14 June, 35 Edw. I.
Bureford. The manor with the hamlet of Upton, near the town of Bureford, wherein the said Joan was not conjoined (extents given), held of the king in chief, as of the earldom of Gloucester, service unknown; which manor and hamlet Ralph de Monte Hermeri holds by the king’s commission until the full age of the heir.
Bureford. The said earl long before his death enfeoffed John Giffard of the town, with the hamlet of Seynet (extents given) for his life, and after his death the same came into the king’s hand because the countess was not conjoined therein; and they are held of the king in chief, as of the said earldom, service unknown. All the above will descend to the heir by hereditary right.

Shipton. The manor (extent given with the names of tenants), including 20 free tenants in the hamlet of Ramesden, held jointly by the said earl and countess, by the king’s enfeoffment of the king in chief, service unknown; and it ought to descend to the heir by hereditary right.

Caversham. The manor (full extent given with names of tenants), including meadow in Hardyngmede and pasture in ‘la Horsengle,’ a fishery, 6s. 8d. from the fixed view of Shippelake, and 2s. from a ferry; whereof the king enfeoffed the said Gilbert and Joan jointly, to hold to them for life and to the heirs of their bodies.

Spenhamlonde by Newebur[y]. 100s. rent from free tenants owing suit of court, and 16s. toll of the market (merchaett’) and pleas &c. held of the earl Marshal, service unknown; wherein the said Joan was not conjoined, for Alice de la March, sometime the wife of the said Gilbert, held (it) by his demise.

Stanvord. The manor (full extent given with names and works of tenants, including washing sheep and a cottar who ‘debet trede the Dyve’ (?), held jointly by the said Gilbert and Joan, by the king’s enfeoffment in form aforesaid, of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee.

Eston. A capital messuage &c., 81a. arable, 12 1/2a. meadow, a common pasture, a grove, 7l. 14s. 7d. rent of free tenants, 46s. rent of customers and pleas &c. of court, held by the said earl, of the king’s enfeoffment, by service of a knight’s fee of the king in chief, as of the honour of Gloucester.

Heghtredeburg. A capital messuage &c., 306a. arable, 16a. meadow, 2 several pastures, a little grove at Hornyngesham, 18s. 9d. rent from free tenants (named), 4l. 3s. rent from customers, and pleas &c. of court, held by the said earl of the king in chief as a member of the honour of Gloucester, service unknown; and they have fallen to the heir, after the king’s enfeoffment abovesaid, by the death of one Richard de Westone who held the same of the earl for life.

WILTS. Inq. taken at Upavene, 29 May, 35 Edw. I.
Wexcombe. The manor (full extent given with names of tenants), with the hundred of Kynewardestone, including a tenement at Paskemere, 25 virgates in Wexcombe and Wultone, and a market town called Bedewynde with toll and ‘chypynggavel,’ held by the said earl of the king in chief by service of rendering 32l. yearly to the king at his exchequer.

Burbach or Burebach. Two carucates of land (extent given with names of free tenants), including a capital messuage, which have fallen to the said heir, after the enfeoffment aforesaid, by the death of Ela sometime countess of Warwick, who held them of the said earl of Gloucester by knight’s service, to wit, rendering 40s. when scutage runs.
DEVON. Inq. 27 May, 35 Edw. I.
Langetre. The hamlet (extent given), whereof the said earl and Joan were enfeoffed jointly by the king in manner aforesaid, service unspecified.

Chetelhampton. The manor (extent given), including a chace with deer, partly covered with wood, and a fishery between Michaelmas and Easter, whereof the said earl and Joan were enfeoffed jointly by the king as abovesaid, service unspecified.
Wynkeleye. The said Gilbert and Joan were jointly enfeoffed by the king of the homage and services of the tenants of the fees of Wynkeleye, with pleas &c. of courts and views of frank-pledge.
DEVON. Inq. 31 May, 35 Edw. I.
Northleye hamlet. A messuage &c., 29a. arable, 4a. several pasture, pasture in common, 2a. moor, 8a. meadow, 5a. wood, and rents &c. of bondmen and cottars, which Maud de Clare, sometime countess of Gloucester, in her widowhood procured from one Nicholas de Mortesthorn and afterwards gave to one Jordan de Insula for his life; and in the time of the said Countess Joan, the same descended to the heirs of the said Gilbert and Joan by the said Jordan’s death, as heirs of the said Maud, and were seized into the hand of the said Joan, who in that manner died seised thereof; they are held of Sir Henry de Lancastre as of the inheritance of his wife, by service of 1/4 knight’s fee; and 11a. arable held as abovesaid, of the lord of Coleswille by service of 1 1/2d.

Stupel. The manor (extent given), including the hundreds of Hasellore, Roubergh and Russchemore, held by the earl of the king in chief, service unknown.
Warham. The township (extent given), including burgesses, rendering 72s. 5 1/2d. yearly, a fishery, a fair at the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and pleas &c. and toll of the market, held by the earl as pertaining to his earldom; and there are paid yearly to the prior of Warham by the hands of the chief lords there 7l. 6s. 8d. rent and perquisites.
No lands &c. have fallen to the heir &c. as above.

Craneborn. The manor (extent given), including a foreign hundred and a chace, held by the earl, as pertaining to his earldom of Gloucester, of the king in chief by service of 2 knights’ fees.
Tarente Gundevill. A moiety of the town held by the earl, [as pertaining] to his earldom, of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Tarente Russcheweston. The manor (extent given) with the hundred of Conkesdich; which manor Gilbert, son and heir of Thomas de Clare, after the death of the said earl recovered by writ of novel disseisin against Ralph de Monte Hermeri and Joan his wife and Gilbert [son of?] the late Earl Gilbert, a minor and in the king’s wardship.
Pymperne. A moiety of the town and hundred (extent given) held by the said earl ……..

KENT. Inq. 22 May, 35 Edw. I.
Westpecham. The manor (extent given), including 16a. pasture in a place called Cheldecote, 12d. ‘gavelherth’ at Easter, 14s. ‘couselver’ at the feast of St. Andrew, and 40d. ‘melleselver’ at Christmas, held by the said Gilbert, by the king’s enfeoffment, of the heirs of John Agylun by service of 1d. yearly.

Westpecham. The said earl gave to Thomas de Yspania to hold for his life, a capital messuage &c., 80a. arable, 40a. pasture, 3a. wood, 3a. meadow, and 3s. and 3 hens rent, which are held of the honour of Gloucester by service of 1/4 knight’s fee; and the said Thomas having lately died, the said tenements came to the hands of Ralph de Monte Hermeri and Joan his wife.
KENT. Inq. 25 May, 35 Edw. I (defective).
Thonebregg. The castle and borough (extent given), including customs of the burgesses called ‘stretpanes’ at Mid Lent and ‘feyrepanes’ at the feast of St. James, perquisites of the portmote, and weirs which render 20 great eels and 60 sticks (estik’) of small eels at the feast of Carniprivium, held by the said earl, by the king’s enfeoffment, of the archbishop of Canterbury by service of being his steward and butler on the day of his enthronement, and doing suit at the archbishop’s court of Otteford held next after the feast of St. Michael only.
Dacherst. The manor, a member of the honour of the castle aforesaid (extent given), including ‘querngavel,’ ‘benherthe,’ 40s. common fine of Hildenne and Suth, and herbage and mast of the chace of Thon[bregge]; and 16a. land held by the said earl by the king’s enfeoffment, of Robert de Haudlo and Simon de Bardenne by service of 12s. 4d. yearly; and there are also due to the priory of Thon[brigge] 6l. 13s. 4d. of yearly alms, and to the parish church of Thon[brigge] 1lb. frank incense, price 4d., of yearly alms.
Haudlo. The manor, a member of the honour of the castle aforesaid (extent given), including a park, and a water-mill held, by the king’s enfeoffment, of the heirs of Richard de Haudlo.

Bradestede. The manor, a member of the honour of the castle of Thonebregge, and borough (extent given), including ‘stretpanes,’ toll of the market, tenants of ‘opelonde,’ customs of ‘rostwode,’ the enclosing of Borghyard, ‘medselvel’ and ‘benherthe,’ held by the said earl, by the king’s enfeoffment, of the archbishop of Canterbury.
Edenebregg. A manor (extent given), including a fishery in the stream, held by the said earl, by the king’s enfeoffment, of the abbot of Westminster by service of a pair of gilt spurs price 6d., and by service of 3s. yearly.

KENT. Inq. 23 May, 35 Edw. I.
Ealding. The manor (full extent given), including woods called Stonhame and Medle, 13 great eels and 24 sticks of small eels, fisheries of the weirs of Douliswer’ and Redepole, a water-mill at Brenchisle, and stallage of the market, held by the said earl, by the king’s enfeoffment, of the king in chief by service of 1/2 knight’s fee, of the honour of Clare; and there are payable to the priory of Thon[bregge] 51s. 5 1/4d. yearly alms.
And the said earl held of the king’s gift a court called the court of the honour of Gloucester, and another court called the court of Warblynton, as of the honour of Clare.

CAMBRIDGE. Inq. Saturday the feast of St. Botulph, 35 Edw. I.
Bodekesham. 1a. land, 12l. 3s. 1/4d. rent of free tenants, pleas &c. held by the said earl and Joan.

Royston (Crucem Roysiam). A court worth 10s. yearly.
Litlingetone. View of frank pledge worth 13s. 4d. yearly.
Aringetone. View of frank pledge worth 6s. 8d. yearly.

Sutho. The manor (extent given), including the views of Wolle, Sautre and Grantesden, held by the said earl and countess, by the king’s enfeoffment, of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. Tuesday after Holy Trinity, 35 Edw. I.
Stiuecle. The manor (extent given), including 12d. payable to Alice la Cottedewedewe for life for her dower for a pasture called Stokkinge, held by the said Gilbert and Joan in chief, as of the honour of Bristoll, by the king’s enfeoffment.
No other land &c. descended to the earl’s heir.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. Thursday before St. Barnabas, 35 Edw. I.
Esinton. A capital messuage, 100a. arable, 18a. meadow, 2 1/2a. pasture, and 28s. 6d. rent of free tenants, held by the said earl, as member of the honour of Rothewelle, of the king by service of 1/2 knight’s fee. And the said earl, before the king’s enfeoffment, gave all the above to Ralph de Batelesmere for life, who survived the said earl, and after his death the said Joan, the king’s daughter, gave the said tenements to Gandin de Clare brother of the said Gilbert for life, who died seised thereof, and these tenements descended by hereditary right to the earl’s heir, and no others.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. Wednesday after Holy Trinity, 35 Edw. I.
Little Brikhull. Two parts of the manor (extent given) held by the said Gilbert and Joan, by the king’s enfeoffment, of the king in chief, as of the honour of the castle of Dover, by service of 13s. yearly; and certain lands held of the lord of Caldecote by service of 5s. yearly.
No other lands afterwards descended to the said earl’s heir &c.
Gilbert, son of the said Gilbert and Joan, aged 17 on 11 May last, is next heir of the said Gilbert.
BUCKINGHAM. Friday before Holy Trinity, 35 Edw. I.
Great Marlowe. The manor (extent given), including a windlass (wyndasm[us]) upon the Thames for hauling ships, rendering 10s. yearly, a fishery rendering 20s. yearly, 8l. 13s. rent of the borough, toll of the market, and fairs on the feast of St. Luke and on Wednesday in Whitsuntide, held by the said Gilbert and Joan with other lands, by the king’s enfeoffment, of the king in chief by the service pertaining to an earl. The said Gilbert died seised thereof wholly, but afterwards the said Joan demised to John le Paniter(?) her servant and Agatha his wife for their lives 2 virgates of land without any building, by service of 1d. yearly; all which are in the king’s hand by the death of the said countess.
No other lands descended to the heir &c.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Trapston on Thursday before St. Augustine, 35 Edw. I.
Liberty of the honour of Gloucester, in co. Northampton. Certain views and a court held by the said Gilbert jointly with Joan late his wife, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by the king’s enfeoffment, of the king in chief, service unknown, viz.:—
Deneford. The court and view, whose pleas &c. are worth 100s.; and he used to receive at the same view 11s. 8d. certain yearly from the towns of Raundes, Wylewynecotes, Middelcotes, Aldewyncle, Lowyk, Trapston, Ryngsted, and Deneford.
Coderstok. A view worth 30s.; and he used to receive at the said view 15s. 3d. certain from the towns of Tanesouere, Sothewyk and Pyryho, and Codirstok and Glapthorn.
Barton Haurad. A view worth 10s., and 4s. fixed view.
Stanierne. A view worth 1/2 mark, and 2s. fixed view.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. Tuesday after Holy Trinity, 35 Edw. I.
Rothewell. The manor and hundred (full extent given), including a pasture in Littelwode, a wood called Mikelwode, a market let to divers men in Rothewell, rendering 14l. 10s. yearly, a fair (feria) on the feast of Holy Trinity, worth 100s. yearly, and fixed views from the townships of Broghton, Lodyngton, Craneslee, Keylmersch, Overton, and Rothewell, held by the said Gilbert and Joan, jointly enfeoffed by the king to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, of the king in chief, service unknown. And 10l. are payable to the countess of Ferrars yearly for her life by the said earl’s deed.
Navesby. The manor (extent given) held by the said Gilbert of the earl of Lincoln by service of three parts of a knight’s fee; which manor descended to the said Gilbert of hereditary right by the death of Isabel de Fortibus, late countess of Albemarle, after the king had refeoffed the said Gilbert and Joan of the manor of Rothewell in form aforesaid.

Berdefeld. The manor (extent given), including a park, ‘herdselver’ and ‘maltselver,’ held by the said Gilbert and Joan, by the king’s enfeoffment, of the king in chief, service unknown; and 400a. land, 7a. meadow, 8a. pasture, and 4l. 4s. yearly rent, acquired by the said earl from Robert le Bruys, after the king’s enfeoffment aforesaid.

ESSEX. Inq. 25 May, 35 Edw. I.
Clarette. The hamlet (extent given), including 10l. rent from free tenants in Clare, co. Suffolk, pertaining to the hamlet of Clarette, held by the said Gilbert and Joan, by the king’s enfeoffment, of the king in chief by service of fee farm, as of the honour of Boulogne, rendering 10l. yearly at the king’s exchequer.
Hersham hamlet. 45a. arable, 2a. meadow, 2a. pasture, a windmill, and 20s. rent, similarly held of the king in chief, service unknown.
Stamburn. 6s. 8d. profits of a court pertaining to the honour of Gloucester.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Berdefeld, 24 May, 35 Edw. I.
Thaxsted alias Thaxstud. The manor (extent given), including customs called ‘herdselver’ and ‘maltselver,’ and rents of 8 plowshares and 7 arrows, held by the said Gilbert of the king in chief as a member of Gloucester (honour), service unknown; which manor was of the inheritance of the said Gilbert, and the said Joan was not enfeoffed thereof, because at that time it was in the hands of Alice de la Marche formerly countess.

HERTFORD. Inq. Wednesday after Holy Trinity, 35 Edw. I.
Staundon. The manor (extent given), including 10s. farm of a mill, and no more because Gilbert son of Thomas de Clare receives the residue, and toll of the market, held of the king in chief, as of the honour of … brok, as of the marshalcy of England, service unknown. The king enfeoffed the said Gilbert and Joan of the same, and no other land descended to the earl or his heir after that enfeoffment.
Popishal. Certain tenements held by the said Gilbert, by the king’s enfeoffment as abovesaid, of the king in chief, as of the honour of Dover, service unknown.

SUSSEX. Inq. 19 May, 35 Edw. I.
Rutherefeld. The manor (extent given), including 3 capital messuages, a free chace with deer, a hundred, and a custom called ‘swynyeld,’ held by the said Gilbert and Joan of the king in chief, service unknown; and tenements called Lynetereslond and Rymmeslye, held of Robert de Bromfelde by service of rendering him 18s. yearly.

Blacchingelegh. The manor (extent given), including 2 parks and a custom called ‘parkselver.’
Blacchingelegh. The borough (extent given), including rents of shops and stalls in the market, perquisites of the fair on the feast of All Souls, and pleas &c. of the portmote.
Ticheseye. A capital messuage, 4a. meadow, 50a. pasture, 103a. arable, and 47s. 2 1/4d. rent.
Chepstede. A wood, 64s. 5d. and 10 ploughshares rent yearly, works worth 109s. 7 1/2d. &c.
Okham. The manor (extent given).
Waldyngeham. 118a. arable and pasture and 28s. 1d. yearly rent.
Camerwell or Camberwell. 69a. arable, 14s. yearly rent, 6 hens and 80 eggs yearly.
Tillyngedoune. A capital messuage, 200a. arable worth 4d. an acre, and 20a. land worth 2d. an acre, yearly.
All held of the said Gilbert and Joan of the king in chief, as a member of the honour of Clare.
Tyllingedoune. The said Gilbert and Joan on the day when the said Gilbert died, held 100a. arable and 10a. pasture there, but Henry de Shenefeld and Christiana his wife, whilst the said lands &c. were in the king’s hand by reason of a trespass of the countess, recovered the same by judgment of the king’s court, as the dower of the said Christiana of the free tenement of Thomas de Warblynton sometime her husband, and they were seised thereof until the escheator by royal command took the same into the king’s hand after the death of the said Joan.

Upclatford. 41s. 9d. yearly from 5 free tenants, and 4l. 19s. 6d. yearly from 17 customers, held by the said earl of Richard Siward, service unspecified; all which descended by hereditary right to Gilbert his son and heir, aged 18 on the feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross, 35 Edw. I.
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. 20 May, 33 Edw. I.
Mapuldrham. The hamlet (extent given).
Petersfeld. The borough (extent given), including a toll worth 50s. yearly.
Both held by the said Gilbert of the king in chief, service unknown; and they descended to Gilbert his son and heir, as last abovesaid.
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. 20 May, 35 Edw. I.
Cornhamptone. The manor (extent given with names of six free tenants) held by the said earl of John de Sancto Johanne by service of 2 knights’ fees; all which descended to Gilbert his son and heir, as last abovesaid.
NORFOLK. Inq. 4 June, 35 Edw. I.
Welles. The manor (extent given).
Warham. The manor (extent given).
Wyveton. The manor (extent given).
All which descended to the said Gilbert by hereditary right, after the surrender of his lands &c. to the king, and they are held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Walsyngham. The manor (extent given), wherefrom the prior of Walsyngham receives 20s. yearly.
Bretcham or Brecham. The manor (extent given).
Crimplesham. The manor (extent given).

The site of a manor, with 2 houses of forks thatched with straw, 240a. land uncultivated on account of the war in those parts, and 33a. meadow; the burgesses used to render 8l. 4s. 11 1/2d. in time of peace, but only 60s. can now be levied, for it was burnt in the war and almost all the tenants are dead; and there are a decayed water-mill and garden of 1/2 ‘estang’; pleas &c. of court nothing because there are no tenants.

Thomaston. 31a. arable in demesne and 3 1/2a. and 1 ‘estang’ of moor, burgesses of a fifth part of the town who render 43s. 9d. yearly and do suit at their hundred (courts), 14 wasted burgages, 28s. 6 3/4d. yearly rent which Gilbert de Clare bought of Philip Maunsel, 20s. rent from Reymund le Ercedekne for a portion of the toll of 2 mills. 2 mills whereof the countess used to receive a fifth part of the toll of the earl’s inheritance, and a third of a fifth part which Earl Gilbert acquired from Philip Maunsel, a bakehouse which Earl Gilbert built, and 3s. 4d. pleas &c. of the hundred.
IRELAND. Similar extent made at Kilkenny on Tuesday after the octave of Holy Trinity, 35 Edw. I (faded).
Loughmetheran. A ruinous stockade(?) (bretag’), grange, stable and a ruinous sheepfold of stakes; 260a. of demesnes and 240a. which lay fallow for the whole time of the countess, and 14a. meadow; 7l. 12d. rent of free tenants (extent given with names of tenants), including a carucate of land in Brunyston held by John Lowys rendering 10 capons and 20 hens and doing suit of court whenever it is held, a carucate of land called Arblasteryslond held by John Cook (Cocus), rendering 2s. and doing suit as above, 28a. land by the lake of St. Patrick, Kilkenny, rendering 2s., and 15 1/2a. land at ‘le Nynche’ held by Thomas de la Fenne, rendering 15s. 6d. yearly and doing suit as above; a rabbit-warren and turbary.
IRELAND. Similar extent, Saturday after Holy Trinity, 35 Edw. I.
Kilkenny. The borough and town (extent given), including a castle which has a hall, 4 towers, a chapel, a mote and divers other buildings, a stone house in the middle of the street (in medio vico) of the town, a plot by the house of Roger de Bristollia, and another opposite the castle, 7a. meadow by ‘le Gibbethulle,’ 17l. 11s. 4 1/2d. yearly from free tenants (named), including the burgesses of Kilkenny who hold their burgages and lands by the enfeoffment of William the marshal, rendering 11l. 15s. 4d. and doing suit at their hundred (courts), a smithy held by David le Mareschal, toll of the market and fair, a custom of letting houses during the fair whereof a third part pertains to the lord, and plots outside the houses in the street let for the time of the fair, 6 mills in ruins, a garden beneath the castle, another in the street (vico) of St. John, a fishery, and 60s. perquisites of the hundred of the town; 66l. 13s. 4d. perquisites of the assizes of Kilkenny (court) with pleas of the crown when held, and 20 marks perquisites of the county.

Dunfert. The manor (extent given), including within the close a hall, chamber, dairy and grange, a stockade(?) (bretag’) outside the gate, and other wooden houses, 143a. land at Nyweham which are in the hand of the countess by the surrender of Elias de Ibbyston for arrears of rent, 3 carucates of land in Davyiston which were of David Louthmetheran and Philip Crooker, 25l. 9s. 5d. from free tenants, including 8a. land in Daviyston held by William de Grangia, and 24l. 9s. 4 1/2d. from the burgesses of Dunfert, who hold 4 carucates, 83a. and 1 ‘estang’ of land in their burgages and a pasture in common, a water-mill, a weir with fishery, and fishery of the water (eque) of ‘le Nore.’

The old town of Jeripont. A chamber for a granary, a grange and a sheep fold (bercheria) of forks (furcis) thatched with straw, in bad condition, 135a. arable, 3a. meadow, 40a. of moor, grove and pasture, 8 cottars holding 18a. land, certain ‘gablarii’ at Cast-langossir holding 1/2 carucate of land at the lord’s will, and 1/2 carucate of pasture at Coileth lying waste on account of the murrain; 6l. 11s. 3d. rent from free tenants, including a carucate of land at Balylaure held by John de Rupe, rendering 60s. yearly and doing suit of court, a carucate of land at Kilerne held by Robert son of Robert by service of 2s. when royal service is proclaimed and doing suit of court, and a carucate there similarly held by Robert de la Lyserne, a carucate in ‘le Nywes’ held by Geoffrey Calf, rendering 17d. yearly and doing suit, 12a. land in Incheganelan held by Roger Ryvel rendering 6s. 8d. and doing suit, and burgages held by the burgesses of the new town of Jeripont who render 22s. 6d. and do suit at their hundred (courts), and they hold a carucate of land in Roslygan rendering 40s. yearly, and John Sacwart renders 1/3lb. pepper yearly to have protection for his Irishmen; an old garden, prise of ale, and perquisites of court, and pleas &c. of the hundred.
IRELAND. Extent of lands &c. of the manor of Fermaill which was of the said earl and is now in the king’s hand by reason of the minority of his heir, made at Kilkenny on Thursday after St. Barnabas, 35 Edw. I.
Fermaill. The manor (extent given), including a castle surrounded with a stone wall and a hall with stone walls, both roofed with wooden shingles, a grange of forks thatched with straw, 62s. 1d. from cottars and ‘betagii,’ and 22s. 6d. from free tenants (named), including 1/2 carucate of land in Athorn held by Thomas de Midia, rendering 13s. 4d. yearly and doing suit of court; and there are in rent payable to William de Sancto Leodegario 37s. 2d. yearly.
Bagodyston. A carucate of land which Earl Gilbert acquired by escheat, now in the king’s hand in form aforesaid.
Corbaly in Offarclan. Half a carucate of the acquisition of the said Gilbert.
Offarclan. The castle which was of the said countess with 29 carucates, and 60a. land used to be worth 26l. 4s. 4d., but because it is in the high march, the land now lies waste because of the war of the Irish and nothing can be received thence, but the king spends 40l. yearly about the guarding of the castle.
Kildermoyth. Four carucates and 4a. land, which used to be worth 8l. 16s. 11d. but now lie waste.
Clontypir. Certain lands of the inheritance of the said Gilbert, which certain farmers hold rendering 54s. yearly.
IRELAND. Extent of the manor of Callan which was of the said countess on the day she died on 19 April(?), 35 Edw. I, made on Wednesday after the octave of Holy Trinity in that year (defaced).
Callan. The manor (extent given), including a castle in which is a hall of wood roofed with wooden shingles, a stone chamber, a kitchen and chambers of wood, and in the hagard a great grange, a stable of stone and an ox house, and 12a. meadow in ‘le Brodemede’; 31l. 2s. rent from ‘betagii,’ including 2 carucates 24 1/2a. land held by Irish ‘betagii’ at Rosmore, 63a. 1 1/2 ‘estang’ of land held by the ‘betagii’ of Monyclon, 130 1/2a. land held of those of Moyordrum, 189 1/2a. land and 41a. moor, pasture &c. held by those of Moycorky, 316 1/2a. land held by those of Balylayn, 40a. land held by certain English and Irish tenants at Old and New Coyllauth, and certain cottars; ….. rent from ‘gavelarii,’ including 110a. land at Matthew’s town(?) held by William le Blund, and 15a. at Dromyn(?) held by the burgesses of Callan; and ….. rent from free tenants(?), including …. at Coillauth held by William de Glo …. Three carucates, 107a. demesne land, meadow &c. and 18l. 3s. 11 1/2d. rent, including 2 carucates of land in Coulyssil held by Geoffrey Schortall, rendering 4l. yearly and doing suit at the court of Balycallan and the mill of Kilmanauth, 2 carucates in Damauth held by John de Braham rendering 8l. 18d. yearly and doing suit of court, 5 carucates in ‘le Keppauth’ held by Roger de Pembrok, rendering a sparrow-hawk without suit, a carucate at Balauthcomyn held by William Marcros, the elder, and William his brother, rendering 4l. 12s. yearly and doing suit of court, 24a. land in Seskynythan held by Walter Strik rendering 7s. 6d. yearly and doing suit of court, and a carucate held by Malauthlyn O’Doing(?) for life by the gift of the countess, rendering 1d. yearly without suit.
Dammauth. 163a. demesne land, meadow and pasture in Rogeryston, 153a. in Lyssodam, 2 carucates of land in Tybirkenny, 3 carucates of land in Kendirganyston, Arclan and the land which belonged to the priest (presbiteri), and 120a. of the land which was of John de Braham.
Balydowill. 273a. demesne land, 34s. 8d. rent from free tenants(?), viz.— a carucate of land at ‘le Sart’ held by Robert Schortall, rendering 1lb. pepper yearly, doing suit of court by John Schortall and 40s. royal service, a carucate of land at Balynolan held by John de Kent, rendering 1lb. pepper and doing suit of court and mill, a carucate of land at Boutyston held by Nicholas de Hoo rendering 13s. 4d. yearly and doing suit of court, and a carucate of land at Cromal town held by Master Henry de Raggeleye rendering 20s. yearly and doing suit of court and mill; and a water-mill.
Lathirdan. 69a. demesne land; 58s. 6d.(?) rent from ‘gavelarii’ (named), including 8a. land in Gortruth held by Thomas O’Cudy(?), rendering 2s. 8d. yearly, and 1/2 carucate held by him there for life for 12d. yearly; and 65s. 10d. rent of free tenants, viz.—a carucate of land at ‘le Holdeton’ held by Alan Dounyng, rendering 40d. yearly and ……..
