Heyleng. A messuage, 30 bovates land in demesne, a windmill, a water-mill, rents, customary works &c. (extent given), held of the heirs of Baiocis, with the advowson of the church, by service of 3 knights' fees. And there are rendered yearly to the abbot of Wellehow, Grimisby, 12d.; to Sir Walter de la Linde, 3d.; to William Cause of Lincoln, 12s.; and to Amabel late the wife of Richard de Heyleng in dower, 6s. 6d.
William his son, aged 25 and more, is his heir.

Middlesex. Inq. 4 May, 17 Edw. I.
Enefeld. A messuage, 106s. 4½d. rent, 86 customs of freemen in August, a corn mill and fulling mill, 294a. land, 27a. meadow, 27a. pasture &c. held of the earl of Hereford by service of 1/5 knight's fee, two suits at the court of knights, viz.—one at Blanchesapeltone and another at Hertford, suit every three weeks at the earl's court in Enefeud, 7s. yearly, and 35 quarters wheat for the said two mills; a messuage, 15a. land, 1½a. pasture, whereof Hugh de Castello and Elicia his wife hold the messuage, pasture and 8a. land for life, rendering 29s. yearly, a fulling mill, which Matthew le Folour holds in fee, rendering 14s. 4d. yearly to the said Richard and his heirs, and to Alice late the wife of Richard the chamberlain for life as dower 16s., and a corn mill, all held of the abbot &c. of Waleden for 30s. yearly, and 10s. for tithes of the said mills; and 8a. land held of John Baldewyne, rendering 4s. 2d. yearly. All those lands pay 5d. to St. Peter's pence yearly.

Somerset. Inq. Saturday after St. Mark, 17 Edward I.
Neuton Forester alias Nyweton, and Exton. The manor (full extent given) held of the king in chief for ¼ knight's fee; 44a. arable, and 40a. meadow [in Nyweton] held of the heir of Henry de Erlegh, now in the king's wardship, by service of 2s. 4d. yearly; and 5s. rent held of the fee of the prior of Montacute, quit of all service.

The steward, clerks, and foresters keeping the said forests [have been accustomed to] be sustained from the issues of the said bailiwick.
Writ to Roger L'Estrange (Extraneo), justice of the forest, to take into the king's hand and extend the abovesaid bailiwick, 8 May, 17 Edw. I.
[Somerset.] Inq. Monday the morrow of Holy Trinity, 17 Edw. I.
The same as the above, save that 'and 14 heifers and a bull' is given instead of 'for 14 heifers and a bull.'
Extent or summary of the lands &c. in the forestry of Menedep, which ought to be parted between the three sisters partners of the inheritance, whereof each portion is 21l. 11s. 7¼d.; and Avelina one of the sisters holds 8l. of land in Neuton Forester, Exton, and Enefeld, formerly assigned to her, and now seeks a moiety of the dower of Margery late the wife of the said Richard, according to a composition made between the partners (undated).

Tuckesford. A park held, together with the advowson of the church, and with the manor of Tuckesford, which Margery de Merleye who was the wife of John de Laxton still holds in dower, of the king in chief by service of ½ knight's fee.
Laxton. A capital messuage, 180a. arable, 50a. meadow, a wood called Estheved, a windmill, rents of freemen 7l. 3s. 10d., of bondmen 4l. 4s., and of cottars 73s. 6d. &c. held of the heirs of Robert de Everingham by service of ½ knight's fee, and 1d. on the day of St. Michael, and there are also rendered thence to the master of the hospital of Oscington 3s. yearly, and to John de Eyvill 1d.; and a little park called Herteshorn held of the earl of Lincoln by service of 2s. yearly.
Allerton. A watermill, 6 bovates in bondage, each rendering 3s. yearly and finding a man for reaping the lord's corn for one day but having his food ; and woods called Beyskehal and Schirewodeheved in the forest of Schirewod, held by the said Robert and Richard de Sutton his coparcener, who ought to have 'husbote' and 'heybote' for themselves and their men by the delivery of the foresters; all held of William son of Thomas, rendering 14s. yearly to the master of the hospital of Neushum.

Lady Agnes de Vescy his mother was seised of all the services of all the tenants of the fee of Vescy there, on the day the said John died, excepting the homages and scutages of the free tenants in the said wapentakes, as well in dower as out of dower, and of all the advowsons pertaining thereto.

I.

Sir John de Vescy enfeoffed the said Agnes of the manors of Newsom, Brende and Thornton for life before he took his way to the land of Jerusalem, and after his return the said Agnes acknowledged in the king's court that the said manors were the right of the said John and his heirs, which she had for life of his gift together with the manor of Gripthorp, as is testified in a charter and fine made between them.

[Hereford.] Inq. Friday after St. Peter ad Vincula, 17 Edw. I.
Kyngeston. The said Henry, who held of the king in chief, enfeoffed Master Walter le Mazon alias le Macon of Hereford of 18a. land in Kyngeston before he died, who was in peaceful seisin for 10 years before the said Henry's death, and held in fee by charter. The tenement is held of the king immediately by petty serjeanty.

Writ (of certiorari) to the sheriff of Norfolk, on the complaint of Robert prior of Cokesfeud that a messuage, mill, garden, and 2 carucates land in Titeleshal, which Reyner sometime prior had demised to the said William for life only, had been taken into the king's hand with the lands &c. of the said William, 6 Nov. 17 Edw. I.
Norfolk. Inq. Sunday after St. Edmund the king, 18 Edw. I.
Tytlish[al]. Reyner sometime prior of Cokisford demised the said messuage &c. to the said William for life and not otherwise.

726. Stephen de Sumery.
Writ (of certiorari) to the sheriff and coroners of co. Hertford to make inquisition; whereas the inheritance of the said Stephen in Schenleye was parted between Maud de Bacheswrth, Amabel de Montiniaco, Muriel Picot, and Ela de Monte Caniso, sisters and heirs of the said Stephen, so that the homage and service of Adam de Somery fell to the pourparty of Roger de Bacheswrth, son and heir of the said Maud, as he says, and Ranulph de Montiniaco son and heir of the said Amabel, John Picot heir of the said Muriel, and John de Monte Caniso heir of the said Ela, assert that they were assigned to Joan late the wife of the said Stephen in dower, and have never hitherto been parted, 7 Feb. 17 Edw. I.
Hertford. Inq. Monday before St. Gregory, 17 Edw. I.
Schenleye. The aforesaid homage and service were assigned to the said Joan in dower, and have never hitherto been parted between the heirs.

727. John de Cancell.
Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of Joan late the wife of the said John, that the escheator had taken into the king's hand the manor of Canewedon, of which the said Joan was jointly enfeoffed with the said John by William de Lamburn, by fine levied in the king's court between the said John and William, 25 Nov. 17 Edw. I.
[Essex.] Inq. Sunday before St. Andrew, 17 Edw. I.
Canewedon. The said John held the manor of the king in chief by service of three parts of 1 knight's fee of the barony of Reyleie, and enfeoffed William de Lamburn thereof on Sunday after St. Michael, 11 Edw. I.; after which the said William was ejected by John de Langherst, under-bailiff of Sir Richard de Sucherch farmer of the liberty of the hundred of Rocheford, who had entry by reason of his bailiwick and not otherwise. The said John and Joan were jointly enfeoffed by the said William (as abovesaid) on Sunday after the octave of the Purification, 12 Edw. I, and the said Joan was in peaceful seisin for four years and more before the death of her husband and so continued until his death.

728. Margery de Anlatheby alias de Anlauby, an idiot.
Writ of certiorari, concerning the state of the said Margery, whose custody with that of her lands and goods the king sometime committed to William de Beverlaco, deceased, 25 May, 17 Edw. I.
[York.] Inq. Tuesday after Holy Trinity, 17 Edw. I.
The said Margery is an idiot, not from her birth, but she has been so continuously since the death of her husband nine years ago. William de Beverlaco had her wardship and that of her lands, viz.—of 10½ bovates for eight years, and similarly for a year of 4 bovates which she had by escheat by the death of Alan le Moyn of Hesel; she had also 25s. 3d. rent of assize, and 5s. from cottages; out of all which she paid 2 marks yearly to the abbot of St. Mary's, York, and, by the grant of her father, 10s. to Josiana her sister, a nun in Swyn, as long as she should live. All the goods arising from the said lands beyond the sustenance of the said Margery, her four children, and household, came to the said William.

729. John de Reylegh and Margery his wife.
Writ of plenius certiorari to the sheriff of Essex, on the complaint of Margery la Feron of London that immediately after the death of the said John and Margery, her daughter, Thomas de Weylaund intruded upon 9a. land, 3a. meadow, and 10s. 8d. rent in Berking which she had delivered to the said John and Margery to be held at her will, and has unjustly detained the same, 8 Nov. 17 Edw. I.
Essex. Inq. Saturday after the octave of St. Martin, 17 Edw. I.
Berking. The said Margery la Feron delivered the said lands and rent to the said John and Margery to be held at her will, and they had no feoffment thereof. They had a son John, who after their death, entered as next heir upon 3½a. land, 1a. 1r. meadow, and 3s. rent with the consent of Richard Batayle the chief lord thereof, and upon the residue of the aforesaid by the mesne (mediante juvamine) of Sir Thomas de Weylaund. The said Sir Thomas held the said tenements in the name of the said John as long as the said John lived, and after his death until the king took them into his hand; but had no other entry than as abovesaid. 3r. meadow of the above are held of the abbess of Berkyng by service of ½lb. cummin yearly, 1a. meadow of William de Huntyngdon by service of 1d. yearly, and 5½a. land of Richard le Despenser, service unknown; 5s. rent issue from land called Holdeslonde, and the heirs of Salamon Alisaundre ought to render 32d. rent of the above.
