Writ of Plura (fragment)
NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Roddeston on the feast of St. Hilary, 2 Richard II.
He held in his demesne as of fee more lands than are specified in the inquisitions taken after his death, namely:—
Sylveston. 3 pieces of pasture named respectively ‘Leverychstokkyng,’ ‘Bladhangerstokkyng,’ and ‘Bernyerd,’ held by service of suit to the court of Edward III at Sylveston once a year.
He died on Thursday before the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 33 Edward III. Thomas Wolfamcote, aged 50 years, son of Joan sister of Richard his father, John Assheby, aged 40 years, son of Margery sister of the same Richard, Agnes de Foxle the wife of Adam Chete, aged 23 years, daughter of John son of Olive sister of the same Richard, and John Mably, aged 20 years and more, son of Richard son of Margery sister of the same Richard, are his kinsfolk and heirs.
Since his death the abbess of Burnham has occupied the premises and received the issues and profits thereof, by what title the jurors know not.

Writ: 20 June, 2 Richard II
DEVON. Inq. taken at Nyweton Busshell, 3 July, 3 Richard II.
He was seised in fee of the under-mentioned rent of 7s. 10d. on the day of his death. On 17 April last he held, in addition to the said rent, the under-mentioned manor of Teyngwyk and messuage etc. mentioned therewith, and on that day alienated the same, without the king’s licence, to John Copleston, William Ferrers and John Holebeme, to hold to them and their heirs and assigns, on condition that they should re-enfeoff him thereof for life (if he should survive), with remainder to John, his son and heir, and Joan, the latter’s wife, and the heirs of their bodies, and with remainder over to his right heirs. The escheator has taken all the tenements, manor and rent aforesaid into the king’s hand.
Nyweton Busshell and Teyngwyk. 7s. 10d. rent from certain of his free tenants there.
Teyngwyk. The manor, and a messuage, 2 mills, a carucate of land, 10 a. meadow and 8l. rent in Teyngwyk, Nyweton Busshell and Bradelegh, held of the king in chief in socage, by fealty and a rent of 40d. payable yearly at the Exchequer at Easter.
He died on 24 April last. John Busshell, aged 17 years and more, is his son and heir.

YORK. Inq. taken at Bridlyngton, Tuesday the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, 2 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned messuages etc. in Hundemanby in his demesne as of fee.
He held the under-mentioned lands etc. in Boynton etc. jointly with Isabel, his wife, who is still living, to them and his heirs.
He died sole seised in fee simple of the under-mentioned homage and services of Robert de Thorp.
Hundemanby. 2 messuages, 4 bovates of land, a piece of meadow called ‘Erleheyng’ and a pasture called ‘Northmore,’ held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Boynton, Ruddestane and Thorp by Ruddestane. Lands etc. worth 7l. 6s. 8d. yearly, held of divers lords by divers services.
Thorp by Ruddestane. The homage and services of Robert de Thorp, who held of him by knight’s service 9 bovates of land there, which he in turn held of Henry de Percy, earl of Northumberland, by the same service, and the earl of the king in chief.
He died on Friday before St. Katharine last. John de Boynton, aged 22 years and more, is his son and heir.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Tukesford, Thursday before St. George, 2 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned toft and meadow.
Tukesford. A toft not built-on and 1 a. land, held of Edward III in chief by knight’s service.
Carlton. A plot of meadow, held of Edward III by knight’s service.
He died on Friday after St. Mark, 46 Edward III. John his son, aged 8 years, is his heir.
Since his death William Milet, who dwells in Coryngham, has taken all the profits of the premises.

81. Bartholomew Burgherssh, knight
Writ of Mandamus to the escheator and the sheriff in co. Wilts, or one of them. 3 May, 2 Richard II.
WILTS. Inq. taken at Weremenstre, Saturday after the Purification, 3 Richard II, before Ralph de Norton, sheriff. He held the under-mentioned manors in demesne and in fee simple.
Heightredebury, Steorte and Colerne. The manors, held of Edward III in chief by knight’s service.
He died on Thursday in Easter week, 44 Edward III. Elizabeth late the wife of Edward le Despenser, knight, is his daughter and next heir, and of full age.
After his death Margaret, his wife, entered into the said manors and occupied them for some time, by what title the jurors know not. Afterwards she demised them for the term of her life to Thomas de Hungerford, knight, at a yearly rent of their true value, to wit, 40l. Thomas has paid that rent to her and William de Bursetre, knight, who has married her, to the present day, so that she and William have received the issues and profits of the manors since Bartholomew’s death.
Note of the appointment by William Burcestre, knight, and Margaret, his wife, of William de Horbury, clerk, and John del Rolles as their attorneys in a plea before the king in the Chancery on a writ of scire facias between them and others and Elizabeth late the wife of Edward le Despenser concerning the manors of Heightredebury, Storte and Goleme, co. Wilts.
Note of the appointment by Thomas de Hungerford, knight, of William Cammel, clerk, as his attorney in a like plea between him and others and the said Elizabeth concerning the same manors.

John, son of John de Boulewas
Writ of scire facias to the sheriff of Salop instructing him to warn Philip Bluet, to whom the king has committed during pleasure the custody of the bailiwick of keeping the king’s forests and hays of the whole county of Salop (by the name of the custody of the forest of Morf), to be before the king in the Chancery in the quinzaine of Midsummer next to shew cause why the said bailiwick with the issues thereof since the death of John son of John de Boulewas should not be delivered to John de Eylesford and Isabel, his wife, as pertaining to the manors of Boulewas and Isenbrugge; as the said John de Eylesford and Isabel, to whom the king on 21 June, 44 Edward III [Calendar of Close Rolls, 1369–1374, p. 143], ordered the said manors to be delivered, have now prayed the king,—inasmuch as it has been found by an inquisition taken by Edmund de Burton, late escheator, that the bailiwick has always belonged and pertained to the manors, that the said John son of John de Boulewas, by licence of Edward III, granted the reversion of the manors with all their appurtenances (which were at the time delivered by John de Boulewas, his father, to John de Burley, knight, Adam Esgar, clerk, and Thomas de la Barre, the elder, by virtue of a statute merchant of 1000l., with reversion to himself when the 1000l. should be fully levied therefrom), to Hugh de Monyton, Thomas de Burghope, John de Stretton and Roger Partrich, and their heirs, reserving nothing of the said manors and bailiwick for himself, that the said grantees, likewise with the licence of Edward III, granted the same reversion to the said John son of John and the heirs of his body, with remainder in default of such heirs to the aforesaid John de Eylesford and Isabel and their heirs, that John de Eylesford thereupon attorned to Hugh de Monyton and the other grantees, and also to the said John son of John, that John son of John at the time of his death held the manors, and the bailiwick as pertaining thereto, to himself and the heirs of his body by virtue of the said grant, and had no other estate therein, and that the manors were held in chief of Edward III and his ancestors by services of keeping all his forests and hays of the said county,—to order that the said bailiwick be delivered to them, with the issues since the death of John son of John, as pertaining to the said manors, 23 May, 2 Richard II.

Writ of dedimus potestatem to the abbot of Dore to receive the attorneys of John de Eylesford, knight, and Isabel, his wife, in a plea before the king in the Chancery between them and Philip Bluet touching the bailiwick called the bailiwick of the forest of Morf. 26 May, 2 Richard II.
Certificate by the abbot that he has received John de la Roulles as attorney of the said John and Isabel.
Writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer, directing them to examine the Book of Fees and other memoranda of the Exchequer and certify the king in the Chancery concerning the tenure of the manors of Bulewas and Isenbrugge, co. Salop. 14 July, 3 Richard II.
Certificate by the treasurer and barons that it is found in the Originalia of 33 Edward III that John de Boulewas, son and heir of John de Boulewas, did homage and fealty to the king for a messuage, a carucate of land and 33s. 4d. rent in Esenbrugg, co. Salop, which his father held of the king in chief by service of keeping the king’s forests and hays in the county, and for the manor of Boulewas, which his father held of the king in chief by the same service.

STAFFORD. Inq. (fn. 1) taken at Chedele, Monday before the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 2 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor, rent and moiety of a mill.
Chedele. The manor (extent given), except the advowson of the church thereof, and 100s. rent and a moiety of a watermill, held of Hugh, earl of Stafford, by service of a sparrowhawk yearly at St. Peter’s Chains. The extent includes an enclosed pasture called ‘Chedelepark,’ a several plot of heath called ‘Wanteleye,’ a plot of pasture called ‘le Mulnedon,’ a fair on the feast of St. Laurence and a market every Thursday.
He had no knights’ fees or advowsons in the county.
He died on Saturday before St. Margaret last, Alice wife of Laurence de Dodton (Dutton), knight, aged 30 years and more, and Elizabeth wife of Richard son of Henry son of John de Grey lord of Codenore, aged 7 years and more, are his daughters and heirs. Elizabeth was married by him before his death.

LEICESTER. Inq. made at Hynkeleye, Thursday after the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 2 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Sapcote to him and the heirs of his body by virtue of a gift thereof made by Alexander, late parson of the church of Stanton, by a fine levied in the court of Edward II, to Simon Basset, his father, and Isabel, wife of the said Simon, and the heirs of their bodies. He was son and heir of the said Simon and Isabel.
He held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in Sapcote to him and his heirs.
He held the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Stanton and land in Potters Mershton in his demesne as of fee.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Bredon with its members as of the right of Alice, his wife, who is still living.
Sapcote. The manor, with the advowson of the church thereof, held of the duke of Lancaster by knight’s service.
Sapcote. A messuage and a moiety of a virgate of land, held of the lord de Ferrers by knight’s service.

NORTHAMPTON. Assignment of dower made at Benyfeld, 20 November, 2 Richard II.
The escheator has delivered to her by way of dower the under-mentioned messuage and lands, which from of old have been delivered as dower.
Benyfeld. A messuage outside the castle, 3 a. arable and 2 pieces of meadow, as her dower of the castle and half a virgate of land; and 25 1/2 a. arable out of 100 a. land adjacent to the castle, and no more, because 45 a. of the said 100 a. lie every year for pasture, of which said 45 a. 15 a. have been delivered to her as dower.

Assignment of dower made at Chedale, Monday before St. Thomas the Apostle, 2 Richard II, in the absence of Laurence de Dutton, knight, who has married Alice, one of the daughters and heirs of the said Ralph, and was warned to be present but did not come, and in the presence of John Galpyn, attorney of Alice late the wife of the said Ralph, and of the next friends of Richard son of Henry son of John de Grey of Codenore, who has married Elizabeth, the other daughter of the said Ralph, a minor.

Writ of diem clausit extremum to Thomas More, receiver of the king’s lordship of Pembroke in Wales, referring particularly to lands etc. held by the said Laurence by knight’s service of the heir of John Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke, a minor in the king’s wardship. 24 September, 2 Richard II.
PEMBROKE. Inq. taken at Pembroke, 10 October, 2 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned messuages, lands etc.
Costyneston. 3 messuages and a carucate of land, held of the heir aforesaid by knight’s service, rendering of 5s. 4d. yearly and doing suit to the court of the gate of Pembroke castle every three weeks or fortnight; whereof a third part is in the hands of Isabel Champaign by way of dower.
Costyngeston. The advowson of the church.
Bengereston. 4 messuages and 1 1/2 carucates 40 a. land, held of the said heir by service of being ready at musters of arms with a bow and a bolt (petilla) when the lord etc.; whereof the aforesaid Isabel holds a third part in dower.
Le Estpenn’. A messuage and 1 1/2 carucates of land, held of the lord in burgage, rendering 5d. yearly and doing suit to the lord’s hundred of Pembroke thrice yearly, to wit, to the three secret hundreds.
Bromhill. 3 messuages and a carucate of land, held in socage of the prior of Pembroke and Hugh de Carreu, rendering 12d. yearly to the prior and 6s. yearly to Hugh, and doing suit to Hugh’s court of Angle (de Angulo); whereof a third part is held by the aforesaid Isabel in dower.
Bastilford in the lordship of Haverford. A carucate of land, held of the prior of St. John of Jerusalem, rendering 13s. 4d. yearly to the house (hospitat’) of St. John of Slebech and doing suit to the court of the same etc.
He died on Thursday after the Purification last. Laurence his son, aged 12 years on the feast of St. Peter’s Chains last, is his heir.

93. Richard Baudewyn of Merston
Writ of Mandamus: 24 September, 2 Richard II
HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Berkhamstede, 15 February, 2 Richard II.
He held no lands etc. in the county on the day of his death; but long before his death he demised the under-mentioned land to Ranulf Char, and on the death of the said Ranulf they were seized into the hand of Edward, prince of Aquitaine, for lack of an heir, and remained there until the prince’s death. They are now in the king’s hand for the above cause.
Berkhamstede. 12 a. land lying in ‘Southsalemannesfeld,’ ‘Northsalemannesfeld’ and ‘Wodecroft,’ held of the honor of Berkhamstede by service of 2s. yearly.
The said Richard died 40 years ago, day not known. John Drynkewater, aged 36 years and more, son and heir of Margaret his daughter and heir, wife of John Drynkewater of Reylegh, is his heir.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Great Stanbregg, 13 October, 2 Richard II.
She held the under-mentioned lands etc. in dower, of the inheritance of Edward de Benstede.
Great Stanbregg. 50 a. land, 1 a. meadow, 1 a. marsh, 1 1/2 a. wood and 33s. 4d. rent, parcel of the manor of Great Stanbregg, held of the king, as of the honor of Reylegh, by service of doing common suit every month to the court of the said honor. The marsh is flooded by inundation of the sea every year.
She died on 19 July last.

HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Storteford, 19 September, 2 Richard II.
She held the under-mentioned lands etc. in dower after the death of the said John, her husband, of the inheritance of Edward de Benstede.
Benyngton. A third part of a messuage, and 100 a. land, 3 a. meadow, 30 a. wood and 30s. rent, parcel of the manor of Benyngton, and the service of three bondmen there, held of the king in chief by service of a third part of half a knight’s fee. The entire manor is held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Winchester, Monday before St. Peter in Cathedra, 2 Richard II.
Long before his death he gave the under-mentioned manor of Brokle to Master John Gilden, John Edward, clerk, John Colyngburne and John Dekne, and their heirs, and they re-enfeoffed him thereof with the king’s licence, to hold to him and the heirs of his body, with successive remainders to John Wroth and Margaret, his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, and to his own right heirs.
He held the under-mentioned manors of Upwallop and Netherwallop and messuage etc. in Burghton to him and Maud, his wife, who is still living, and the heirs of their bodies, with successive remainders as above.
He held the under-mentioned messuages etc. in Stokebrigg to him and Maud, his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs.
Brokle. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Upwallop and Netherwallop. The manors, held of the prior of Noion and the treasurer of York by fee-farm.
Burghton. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the master of the Maison Dieu of Portesmoth in chief by service of 8s. yearly.
Stokebrigg. 2 messuages, a carucate of land and 16 a. meadow, held of the duke of Lancaster, service not known.
He died without heir of his body on 19 January last. John Wroth and Margaret, his wife, aged 40 years and more, are his next heirs.

WILTS. Inq. taken at Salisbury, Thursday after St. Peter in Cathedra, 2 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Wodefolde for life, with successive remainders to John Wroth and Margaret, his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, and to his own right heirs.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Radelynche etc. to him and Maud, his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, with successive remainders as above.
Wodefolde. The manor, held of the bishop of Winchester, service not known.
Radelynche. The manor, and 60 a. land and 6 a. meadow in Beaupers, held of the bishop of Winchester by knight’s service.

BERKS. Inq. (indented) taken at Faryngdon, Thursday after St. Faith, 2 Richard II.

He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manor of Bockelond, and on 1 July, 40 Edward III, enfeoffed Richard Belle, parson of the church of Burwardescote, Richard Feteplas and John Pecke thereof, to hold to them and their heirs, whereupon the said feoffees, on Monday before All Saints in the same year, enfeoffed him and Katharine, his wife, thereof, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs. The king’s licence was obtained for the above feoffments.
Bockelond. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee.
He died on Thursday after the Nativity of the Virgin Mary last. John de Besyles, aged 16 years and more, is his son and heir.

OXFORD. Inq. taken at Bampton, Thursday after St. Faith, 2 Richard II.
He was seised of the under-mentioned manor of Rottecote in his demesne as of fee.
Walter in le Hurne, chaplain, on Thursday the feast of St. Mark, 33 Edward III, granted the under-mentioned manor of Grafton, messuage etc. in Clanyfeld and rent of 26s. 8d. in Rottecote to him and Katharine, his wife, for life, with remainder to John, their son, and his heirs male.
John Cokerel and Amice, his wife, gave the under-mentioned 16 a. land etc. in Rottecote, Grafton and Langeford to him and the said Katharine for life, with remainder as above.
Walter Thorleton and Joan, his wife, gave the under-mentioned moieties of messuages etc. in Langeford and Grafton to him and the said Katharine for life, with remainder as above.
Rottecote. The manor (extent given), held of the king by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Grafton. The manor.
Clanyfeld. A messuage with an adjacent croft called ‘Wymundusplace.’
Rottecote. 26s. 8d. rent from a watermill and the adjacent fishery.
Rottecote, Grafton and Langeford. 16 a. land, 22 1/2 a. meadow and 9s. 1d. rent.
Langeford, co. Berks. A moiety of 3 messuages, of 3 virgates of land, of 30 1/2 a. meadow and of 20s. rent, and a moiety of a messuage.
Langeford and Grafton. A moiety of 5 messuages, of 7 virgates of land, of 15 a. meadow and of 23s. rent, and a moiety of a messuage.
All the premises (except the manor of Rottecote) are held of the prior of Negene by service of 40s. yearly.
He died on the morrow of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary last. Heir as above.

SOMERSET. Inq. (indented) taken virtute officii at Dunsterre, Tuesday after St. Laurence, 3 Richard II.
He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manor.
Kynggesbrompton. The manor, held of the king in chief.
He died on 15 August, 2 Richard II. John, his son, aged 19 years, is his heir. Two years before his death he sold the marriage of the said John to Peter de Bratton; and a year and a half before his death John was espoused to Thomasia, Peter’s daughter.

OXFORD. Extent (indented) taken at Rottecote, Tuesday, 18 January, 2 Richard II, being an assignment of dower to Katharine late the wife of the said Thomas.
Rottecote. An extent of the manor is given, with full details of the third part thereof assigned to Katharine, including lands in the furlongs (stadia) called ‘Hatteresforlong,’ ‘Miswendlond,’ ‘Froggemorforlong,’ ‘Chercheforlong,’ ‘Sevenacres,’ ‘Everlond,’ ‘Sowthduntenhull,’ ‘Westduntenhull,’ ‘Northduntenhull’ and ‘Wilbiescroft,’ meadow land in ‘Froggemore’ meadow, ‘Tibbenham,’ ‘Middelmed,’ ‘Wilbiesmede’ by ‘le Presteslond,’ ‘Hunyhamesyate’ by ‘Duntenhull,’ Thacham by Thames, ‘le Ryme’ by ‘Duntelake,’ ‘Hunyham’ by ‘Balowesham’ and ‘Stodfordesham’ by ‘le Schorte forlong,’ rents and services of various tenants, namely, John Smart, William atte Hall, John Smith, John Syward, John Knygth, William Walker, Agnes atte Nelme and John le Cook, and a third part of the farm of a free fishery in the Thames, which is let at farm to John Syward, John Cook and Robert atte Hall.

Writ: Gloucester, 20 October, 2 Richard II
SALOP. Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, 2 November, 2 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor for life by demise of Roger de la Warre with the late king’s licence at a rent of 20l. yearly. On Thursday after the Purification, 33 Edward III, he was outlawed at the suit of the late king and Lewis de Cherleton in a plea of trespass and contempt, whereupon the manor was taken into the late king’s hand and the custody thereof was committed by letters patent to John atte Wode and Lucy, his wife, for as long as it should remain in the king’s hand for the above cause, at a rent of 20l. yearly to the said Roger and 20s. yearly to the late king. Moreover, the said Roger by his indented charter demised the manor at farm to the said John and Lucy for the term of their life and a year longer, at a rent to him and his heirs of 20l. yearly. Subsequently, Hugh was restored to common law, and by agreement with the said John entered into his original estate in the manor by the king’s writ, saving to John and Lucy their right in the manor after his death. He continued his estate in the manor until his death.
Albrighton. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
He died outside the county on 9 June last, as the jurors understand. John, son of his brother William Carles, knight, aged 30 years and more, is his next heir in blood.

103. William, son of John, son of John Draper of Petlyng
Writ of Devenerunt, 12 February, 2 Richard II
LEICESTER. Inq. taken at Hynkeleye, Thursday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 3 Richard II.
The following came to the hands of Edward late prince of Wales on the death of John son of John Draper, who died on 1 August, 35 Edward III, and by reason of the minority of William, his son and heir.
Cosseby. A messuage and half a virgate of land, with 7s. yearly, held of the prince in chief, as of the honor of Huntingdon, by fealty and service of doing suit twice yearly to the prince’s court at Cosseby.
The said William died while under age on Monday after Michaelmas, 50 Edward III. Maud daughter of the said John [son of John], aged 24 years, is his sister and heir. Since his death she has been in possession of the premises and received all the issues thereof by demise of Richard de Hampton, late the prince’s feodary there, who has received the said rent of 7s. yearly during the whole time.

104. Elizabeth, late the wife of Roger Elmerugg

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Mussyndene, Monday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 2 Richard II.
She held the under-mentioned moiety for life in joint feoffment with Hugh Plecy, sometime her husband, to them and the heirs of the said Hugh. After Hugh’s death John son of John Lenveysy, his kinsman and heir, (to wit, son of Eleanor his sister), granted by a fine levied in the late king’s court that the said moiety, which was then held by Roger Elmerugg and the said Elizabeth for the term of the latter’s life, with reversion to himself, should remain after Elizabeth’s death to William Forde, clerk, John Knyght, clerk, and Thomas Segynton, clerk, and the heirs of the said William; and the said grantees, by a fine levied as above, granted the said remainder to the said John son of John and Elizabeth, his wife, and the heirs of the body of John son of John. So the reversion of the moiety after the death of the deceased now falls to the said John son of John and Elizabeth, who are still living.
Mussyndene. A moiety of the manor, and of the advowson of the abbey, held of the earl of Stafford by knight’s service.
The said Elizabeth wife of Roger died on Monday after St. Barnabas last. The aforesaid John son of John and Elizabeth, his wife, are 28 years and 17 years of age respectively, and more. The jurors know not who is next heir of the said Elizabeth wife of Roger.

OXFORD. Inq. taken at Cudlynton, Monday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 2 Richard II.
She held the under-mentioned manor for life in joint feoffment with Hugh Plecy, sometime her husband, to them and the heirs of the said Hugh, by gift of John, parson of the church of Hakeburne, and John, parson of the church of Emynton, in 19 Edward III. Afterwards, by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence in the octave of Trinity, 48 Edward III, John son of John Lenveysy, Hugh’s kinsman and heir, (to wit, son of Eleanor his sister), granted that the said manor, then held by Roger Elmerugg and the said Elizabeth for the life of the latter, with reversion to himself, should remain to William Forde, clerk, John Knyght, clerk and Thomas Segynton, clerk, and their heirs; and the said grantees, by a fine levied as above, granted the said remainder to the said John son of John and Elizabeth, his wife, and the heirs of the body of John son of John, with remainder to William de Molyns, knight, and his heirs. So the reversion of the manor after the death of the deceased now falls to the said John son of John and Elizabeth, who are still living.

WORCESTER. Inq. (indented) taken ex officio at Worcester, 14 October, 3 Richard II.
Elmbrugge. Thomas de Astleye, knight, and Katharine, his wife, hold the manor of Elmbrugge for the life of John Cassy, the younger, by demise of John de Elmbrugge, deceased, rendering to the latter and his heirs, after the death of Elizabeth late the wife of Roger de Elmbrugge, knight, 10l. yearly.
The said Elizabeth died about Whitsunday last, and the reversion of the rent aforesaid belongs to Roger son and heir of the said John de Elmbrugge, a minor aged 6 years and more. Roger holds the said manor by knight’s service of Richard son and heir of John Talbot of Richard’s Castle, a minor in the king’s wardship, so that during his (Roger’s) minority the said rent, as well as the custody of his body and his marriage, belong to the king. The marriage is worth 40l.

Writ of Mandamus, 23 December, 21 Richard II
WORCESTER. Inq. taken at Worcester, Saturday, the eve of Palm Sunday, 21 Richard II.
She held the under-mentioned manor as jointly enfeoffed with Roger, formerly her husband by gift of William Hodynton and Thomas de la Brode, chaplain, to them and the heirs of Roger.
Elmbrugge alias Elmrugge. The manor, held of Richard son and heir of John Talbot of Richard’s Castle by knight’s service. At the time of Elizabeth’s death the said Richard was a minor in the king’s wardship.
She died about Whitsunday, 3 Richard II. Roger son of John Elmbrugge alias Elmrugge, brother of the said Roger, knight, now aged 22 years and more, is heir of the said Roger, knight.
Thomas Asteley, knight, and Katharine his wife after the death of the said Thomas have occupied the manor by virtue of the king’s letters of custody of the manor and marriage of the said Roger son of John.

OXFORD. Inq. (indented) taken at Oxford, Tuesday after St. Laurence, 2 Richard II.
Joan late the wife of Stephen de Vaylaunce held the under-mentioned manors for life, of the inheritance of the said John, by demise of William Fienles, knight, his father. She died on the feast of SS. Peter and Paul last, and the manors are now in the king’s hand by reason of the minority of William, brother of the said John.
Lynham. The manor, held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Pontefract, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Ascote. The manor, held of the king as parcel of the earldom of Cornwall by knight’s service.
The said John died on 24 March, 49 Edward III. The aforesaid William, his brother, aged 21 years and more, is his heir.

BERKS. Inq. (indented) taken at Maydenhuythe, Friday after St. Leonard, 2 Richard II.
The said John held the under-mentioned bailiwick in his demesne as of fee. It is now in the king’s hand by the death of Edward III.
Joan late the wife of Stephen de Vaylaunce held the under-mentioned manor of Wolvele and lands in Wytewaltham and Cokham for life, of the inheritance of the said John. She died etc., as above (last inquisition).
Wyndesore forest. The bailiwick of the forestership of La Twechene, held of Edward III by service of paying 10s. yearly at the king’s castle of Wyndesore.
Wolvele. The manor, with the advowson of the free chapel and all the other appurtenances thereof in Wytewaltham, held of Miles de Wyndesore by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
Wytewaltham. 100 a. arable, held of the abbot of Cherteseye by service of 25s. yearly.
Cokham. 34 a. arable and 18 a. meadow, held of the king, as of the ancient demesne of Cokham, by service of 5s. 6d. yearly.

He held the under-mentioned manor in his demesne as of fee. Since his death Stephen de Valence, knight, has received all the issues and profits of the manor, by what title the jurors know not.
Asshall. The manor, in the town of Heighaungre, held of Hugh, earl of Stafford, as of the hundred of Aungre, in socage, by service of 12d. yearly and common suit to the said hundred.
Date of death as above. William de Fienles, knight, aged 21 years on the feast of St. Peter’s Chains last, is his brother and heir.

SUSSEX. Inq. taken at Hurstmounceux, Wednesday the eve of SS. Simon and Jude, 2 Richard II.
The said John held the under-mentioned manor in his demesne as of fee. Two-thirds thereof came to the hands of Edward III by reason of his minority, by what title the jurors know not. The other third part was held in dower by Joan, his mother, late the wife of William de Fienles. She died on the feast of SS. Peter and Paul last.
Hurstmonceux. The manor, held of the earl of Richmond by service of 2 knights’ fees and 1 lb. of cummin at Michaelmas, and by service of rendering 23s. by equal portions at Easter and Michaelmas to Thomas Langeford at his manor of Aldecourt, 2s. at Michaelmas to Robert Cralle, 5s. at Michaelmas to the countess of Oxford at her manor of Laghton, 1d. at Michaelmas to Walter Pavely, knight, at his manor of Burgassh, 6s. 8d. by equal portions at Whitsun and Michaelmas to the abbot of Battle, 12d. at Midsummer to Simon de Peplesham, 1d. at Michaelmas to the prior of Michelham, and 3d. at the Purification to Thomas de Hoo, knight, at his manor of Wertlyng. The manor with the advowson of the church is worth 40l. yearly and no more, because a great part of it is waterlogged marshland (mariscus qui est mangna pars dicti manerii maxime subundatur).
