A moiety of the manor, held of the same duke by knight’s service and service of 10d. yearly. Ulvereston. A moiety of the manor, held of the abbot of Fourneys by knight’s service and service of 15s. yearly. Whytyngton. A third part of the manor, held of the aforesaid duke by knight’s service and service of 3s. 4d. yearly. He was a man of the realm of France and died without heir in the year 19 Edward III, for which cause the king took the premises into his hand as his escheat and granted them by charter to John de Coupeland and Joan his wife for their lives; and also granted by charter the reversion of those held of the duke of Lancaster to Ingelram de Coucy and Isabel his wife and the heirs of their bodies, and the reversion of the moiety of the manor of Ulvereston to the abbot of Fourneys and his successors. The said John de Coupeland and Joan had possession of the premises from the date of the grant until Wednesday before Easter last, when Joan died. After her death they were taken into the king’s hand, and those held of the duke were delivered to the said Ingelram and Isabel. The moiety of the manor of Ulvereston still remains in the king’s hand. |
