Possewyk by Norwich. The manor, held as above. David de Strabolgi, late earl of Athol, was seised thereof, and on 10 July, 37 Edward III, acknowledged before Roger Virly and Edmund Rose, clerk appointed to receive recognisances of debts, a debt of 140 marks to John de Welbourn of Norwich, taverner. Afterwards he divested himself of the manor, together with other lands of his in the county, to William de Edyngdon, bishop of Winchester, David de Woll’ and others, with the king’s licence, and the said feoffees, also with the king’s licence, re-enfeoffed him and Elizabeth his wife thereof, to hold to them and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs. The earl then died, and Elizabeth married John Malewayn. John de Welbourn was then dead, and his executors, to wit, Katharine his wife, William de Brook, John de Corpesty, William de Welbourn and John Bacon, chaplain, sued for repayment of the debt. In course of process the manor was valued at 11l. 15s. 5 1/2d. yearly and was delivered to them to hold as their free tenement according to the statute until they should have levied therefrom the aforesaid debt and 40l. for damages and expenses. The valuation and delivery were made at Possewyk on Monday after SS. Simon and Jude, 4. Edward III, by virtue of a writ returnable before the justices at Westminster in the octave of Martinmas following. So Elizabeth died seised of the manor in this wise and no other.
Westlexham, Stukeye and Holkham. The manors, held as in the last inquisition. Date of death and heirs as last above. |
