LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Lincoln, Friday after St. Peter in Cathedra, 46 Edward III.
Appelby. 2 messuages and a bovate of land, held of the king in chief by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee; and 2 messuages and a bovate of land and meadow, held of the prior of Thornholm by service of 3s. yearly.
Appelby. A bovate of land.
Risby. A messuage and 8a. land.
These last two items are held of the same prior by service of 3s. yearly.
Appelby and Risby. A messuage and 16a. land and meadow, worth 5s. yearly and no more because the land in Risby is sandy, held in joint feoffment with Margaret his wife, who survives, of the same prior by service of 3d. yearly.
He died on Sunday before the Conception of the Blessed Virgin, that is, after the feast of St. Nicholas, 45 Edward III. Robert his son, aged 5 years and more, is his heir.

ESSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Rocheford, 13 March, 46 Edward III.
Little Shobery. A messuage, held of John Fitzsimond by service of 3d. yearly; 1a. land, held of the prior of Berden by service of 1d.; and 4a. land, held by service of 4d. of the tenement formerly belonging to Adam Sare, who held of the king, as of the honor of Reylegh, which tenement is in the king’s hand by reason of the minority of Thomas Odyn, Adam’s kinsman and heir. After John Clerk’s death, Adam received the profits of the said 4a. during his lifetime on account of the minority of John Shipwryght, John Clerk’s kinsman and heir; and since Adam’s death the king has received the profits at the Exchequer by the hands of the bailiff of the honor of Reylegh for the same cause and by reason of the wardship of the said Thomas Odyn, who is still under age.
John Clerk died at Shopelond on 2 May, 23 Edward III. The said John Shipwright, aged 25 years and more, is his kinsman and heir, to wit, son of Alice daughter of Joan his sister. The issues of the other premises since his death have been received by the respective lords of the fees.

SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Tymbersbergh, Thursday before Michaelmas, 46 Edward III.
Tymbersbergh. A messuage, 2 carucates of land and 100s. rent, held of John duke of Lancaster, as of his manor of Troubrugge, by knight’s service.
He died on Monday before the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 43 Edward III. Margaret his sister, aged 20 years, whom John Wodelok has taken to wife, is his heir.

LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 4 February, 46 Edward III.
He had no lands &c. in the city or suburbs.
He died on 15 January, 45 Edward III. Anne his daughter, aged 18 years, wife of the earl of Pembroke, is his heir.
Writ to the escheator in cos. Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Middlesex. 18 January, 45 Edward III.
Endorsement: The said Walter held no lands &c. in cos. Surrey, Sussex and Middlesex, so far as the escheator can ascertain at present.
KENT. Inq. (indented.) taken at Sydyngbourn, 4 February, 46 Edward III.
Dunstalle. The manor, held of Luke de Ponyngges, as of his manor of Aylenodyton, by fealty and suit to the court of the said manor every three weeks.
Elmsle. 1000a. marsh.
He held the above for life, the reversion belonging to Gilbert Champeneys and Elizabeth his wife in right of the latter. Gilbert and Elizabeth granted the reversion, by a fine levied in the king’s court, to Richard Ravensere, clerk, Henry de Snayth, clerk, William Strete and Robert de Notyngham, and the heirs of William Strete, and Walter Mauny attorned to the said grantees. Afterwards, Robert de Notyngham released his estate by a deed to the other grantees, who subsequently, by a fine levied in the king’s court, granted the reversion to Robert de Knoll, knight, Constance his wife, and John de Lakyngheth, knight, and the heirs of the latter, and Walter attorned to the said grantees. John de Lakyngheth released his right in the premises to Robert de Knoll and Constance, their heirs and assigns, so that the reversion now belongs to them.
Walter died on 15 January last. Agnes (sic) countess of Pembroke, his daughter, aged 18 years, is his heir.

ESSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Dunmawe, Tuesday in the second week of Lent, 46 Edward III.
Dovercourt with Herewich, Great Chesterford, and Romford. The manors, held of the king in chief as parcel of the earldom of Norfolk, of the inheritance of Margaret his wife, a daughter and heir of Thomas late earl of Norfolk and marshal of England.
He died at Great Chesterford on Thursday after the Epiphany last. Anne his daughter, aged 17 years on the eve of St. James last, wife of John Hastyngges, earl of Pembroke, is his heir.
HERTFORD. Inq. (indented) taken at Buntyngford, Thursday in the second week of Lent, 46 Edward III.
Weston. The manor, held of the king in chief as parcel of the earldom of Norfolk, of the inheritance of Margaret his wife.

HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Hicchen, Friday after St. Augustine, 47 Edward III.
Weston. The manor (as in the last inquisition).
Knebworth. The manor, held jointly with Margaret his wife in fee tail by gift of Nicholas de Horton, clerk, and Robert de Ellerton to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to Walter’s right heirs. The manor was lately held of Robert de Insula of Rougemont, services not known. Robert lately granted the said services to the king, with his other fees, so that the manor is now held of the king in chief, service not known.
Walter died on 13 January, 45 Edward III. Heir as last above, aged 18 years on the eve of St. James last. Since his death the said Margaret has had possession of the premises.

GLOUCESTER AND HEREFORD AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES. Inq. taken at Chepstowe, 12 February, 46 Edward III.
Strugull. The castle and lordship.
Tudenam. The manor, with the advowson of the church of La Caute.
He held the above in right of Margaret his wife, who survives, of the king in chief by homage and fealty.
He died on 8 January last. The said Margaret, aged 40 years and more, is his heir to the premises.

WORCESTER. Inq. (indented) taken at Worcester, Monday before St. Gregory, 46 Edward III.
Northpydele. The manor (extent given), held in right of Margaret his wife, who survives, of the earl of Warwick by suit of court at Worcester castle.
He died the third day after the Epiphany in this year. Anne countess of Pembroke, aged 15 years and more, is his next heir in blood.

CALAIS. Inq. taken before William de Gunthorp, treasurer of Calais, 23 June, 46 Edward III.
He held in fee by the king’s charter all the tenements and empty plots which before the conquest belonged to John Morell, doing watches and other services like other tenants. They are ruinous …….., except one which renders 40s. yearly, …….., [and] except two shops (shoppes) which he gave to one of his chamberlains named Simon Trois Deniers for life, with reversion to his own heirs. If the premises were repaired they would be worth 100s. or 10 marks or thereabouts. The inquest also says that, on the information …….. Robert de Langedon, then bailiff, the aldermen, the tenants of those tenements and other good men of the town, on 7 February last Reynold Frenshe was seised of all the said tenements, for himself and for William Haldene, Sir Richard de Evesham, clerk, John de Whitewell and John Boys, by a charter of feoffment sealed with Sir Walter’s seal and a letter of attorney under the same.

WARWICK. Inq. taken at Warrewyk, Saturday before the Annunciation, 46 Edward III.
Aspele. The manor (extent given), held in right of Margaret his wife, who survives, of Sir John Botetourt by service of suit of court at the castle of Wele. There is no manor house built there, but there is a site of a manor within the park, the underwood and pasture of which are only worth 2 marks yearly for want of buyers.
Alspath. The manor (extent given), similarly held of Sir John de Clynton by homage and fealty.
Thurlaston. The manor (extent given), similarly held of the earl of Warwick by homage and fealty. The pleas and perquisites of court there belong to the court of Braundon.
Flekenho. The manor (extent given), similarly held of the same earl by homage and fealty.
Except in the case of Aspele the extents consist only of rents of assise and pleas and perquisites of court.

LEICESTER. Inq. taken at Leycestre. Thursday after St. Gregory, 46 Edward III.
Coldoverton. The manor (extent given), held in right of Margaret his wife, who survives, of the lord de Ros by payment of 3/4d. yearly to the castle of Belvoir. The extent includes a park.
Dalby. The manor (extent given), similarly held of the bishop of Lincoln by homage and fealty.
Segrave. The manor (extent given), similarly held of the abbot of Leycestre by service of 20s. yearly.
Sileby. The manor (extent given), similarly held of the duke of Lancaster by service of suit of court to the castle of Leycestre. The pleas and perquisites of court there, except those of the bondmen, belong to the duke.
Montsorell. The manor (extent given), similarly held (fn. 1) of the honor of Winchester by service of 12d. payable to the manor of Groby. The extent consists of rents of free burgesses and pleas &c. of court.
Wythurdele. The manor (extent given), similarly held of the duke of Lancaster by service of suit of court to the castle of Leycestre.
Gosecote. The hundred, similarly held by rendering 100s. yearly at the Exchequer.

Lopham. The manor, held as of the right and inheritance of Margaret his wife of the king in chief in socage.
Fornesete. The manor, similarly held of the king in chief by knight’s service and by rendering 25s. yearly to Norwich castle.
Little Framelyngham and Suthfeld. The manors, similarly held of the king in chief in socage.

Milneho (a hamlet of Dunton) and Stratele. Views of frankpledge, held in right of Margaret his wife.
Milneho and Dunton. One knight’s fee, [held] by the abbots of Waltham and Wardon and the prioress of Haliwell.
Strattone. Two knights’ fees, held by the said Walter in right of Margaret his wife, and of him by the lord de Latymer.
Stratele. Half a knight’s fee, held by him in like manner, and of him by George de Febbrigg (sic).
All the above are parcel of the manor of Weston by Baldok.

Kenet, cos. Cambridge and Suffolk. The manor (extent given), and the advowson of the church, held in right of Margaret his wife of the earl Warenne by service of 1 1/2 knights’ fees.
Dokesworth. A view of frankpledge, parcel of the manor of Chestreford, and half a knight’s fee held by the lady Daubernoun, both held by him in right of the said Margaret.
Chevele. One knight’s fee, held by him in right of the said Margaret, and of him by Nicholas Loveyn, knight.

Fenstanton, co. Huntingdon. The manor (extent given), with its appurtenances in cos. The extent includes 3 holts (holti) in the marsh, enclosed with hedges, a horse-mill, a fishery, a custom of boats and carts coming by river, with the toll, and a view of frankpledge.

He had no lands &c. in the escheator’s bailiwick, but Margaret his wife, formerly the wife of John de Segrave, has the following by grant of the said John, to them and the heirs of their bodies:—
Tykhill, Bagle, Frythebek, Odesthorp, Letwell, Langold, Twayte, Gildanwell, Wallandwell, Wodesete, Dynyngton and Stone. 14l. 10s. rent from lands which are held of the castle and honor of Tykhill, now in the king’s hand, by fealty and service of a sore sparrowhawk, price 2s., yearly.
Dynyngton, Anstan, Kyveton and Bramlay. Lands and rents in the hands of tenants rendering 70s. yearly, held of the castle and manor of Conyngesburgh by fealty and service of a pair of gilt spurs, price 6d., yearly.
He held nothing except as above in right of the said Margaret, who survives.
He died on Wednesday after the Epiphany last. Anne his daughter, countess of Pembroke, aged 15 years and more, is his heir.

149. HENRY MAUVESYN.
Commission in the form of a writ of mandamus to Godfrey Foljambe, Alfred de Sulny and John Foucher. 8 February, 45 Edward III.
STAFFORD. Inq. taken at Burton on Trent, Monday before St. George, 45 Edward III.
Rydware Mauveysin. The manor, held of the earl of Arundel by service of hall a knight’s fee.
Gorstihull. A plot of land so called, held of the king by knight’s service, amount not known.
He died in the year 18 Edward II. After his death Robert his son and heir, being of full age, entered on the premises and gave the plot of land to Hugh his son and Felicia wife of the latter for their lives, saving the reversion to himself and his heirs. Of the manor he enfeoffed Nicholas de Mounseus, parson of the church of Rydware, and others, who re-enfeoffed him and Margaret his wife thereof, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies; and after having issue by Margaret he died. Margaret then held the manor, and died about the feast of All Saints, 44 Edward III. The earl of Arundel then seized the manor on account of the minority of Robert son of Thomas son and heir of the said Robert and Margaret, together with the body of the said Robert the son. The aforesaid Felicia holds le Gorstihul of the right of the said Robert, because the reversion belongs to him. He is 14 years of age.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Penreth, Monday after St. Valentine, 46 Edward III.
Ulvesby. Two-thirds of a moiety of the manor, held jointly with Katharine his wife and William their son, who survives, by grant of John de Croffeton, as [appears] by the king’s charter of licence. The two-thirds are held of the king in chief by homage and the service of rendering yearly at the Exchequer of Carlisle (sum unspecified) for cornage and 10s. by the hands of the sheriff for socage-farm (firma socagii).
Threlkeld. The manor, held of John de Derwentwater, knight, as of his manor of Castelrigg, by homage and fealty.
William died on Thursday after St. Luke last. William son of John his son, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.
WESTMORELAND. Inq. taken at Amotbrig, Tuesday after St. Valentine, 46 Edward III.
Crosseby Ravenswarth. The manor, held of Ralph de Hastynges, knight, by homage and fealty and service of rendering 13s. yearly for cornage.
Yavenwhit. A moiety of the manor, held of Ralph, son and heir of William baron of Craistok, a minor in the king’s wardship, as of his manor of Duffeton, by homage and fealty, service of rendering 4s. for cornage, and suit to his court of Duffeton every three weeks.
Bolton. Lands &c. held of him by four tenants at will, and by him of John de Derwentwater, knight, as of his manor of Bolton, by homage.

Writ of devenerunt, 23 January, 45 Edward III.
SOMERSET. Inq. (indented) taken at Yevele, Monday after St. Barnabas, 46 Edward III.
The following came to the king’s hand by the death of the said John and by reason of the minority of Guy his son and heir:—
Chilton Cauntelou. A messuage, 16a. land and 1a. meadow, held by knight’s service of Joan daughter of Thomas Chasteleyn, kinswoman and one of the heirs of Emma late the wife of Walter atte Park and late a minor in the king’s wardship. The said Joan held them of the heir of Laurence de Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke, who was then likewise a minor in the king’s wardship.
Guy died on Monday after the Nativity of St. Mary, 45 Edward III. Agnes his sister, aged 18 years and more, is his heir.

153. RICHARD WOLF.
Writ of mandamus, 26 November, 45 Edward III.
DEVON. Inq. taken at Exeter, 6 April, 46 Edward III.
Richard Wolff, son and heir of Walter Wolf, held the following:—
Wolvesnymet. A carucate of land, held of William son and heir of John de Clavyll, and Joan his wife, as of their manor of Bridlescomb, by knight’s service.
He died on Saturday before Michaelmas, 43 Edward III, aged 23 years and more. Richard his son, aged 5 years and more, is his heir. The said William son of John de Clavyll died on Wednesday before St. Martin, 43 Edward III, aged 27 years.
Since the death of Richard the escheators have been in possession of the land and received the issues for the king’s use by reason of the minority of the said Richard son of Richard son of Walter, who held it of the said William son of John, who held it of the heir of Hugh le Despenser, formerly a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service. It is still in the king’s hand for the above cause because nobody has pursued his right thereto.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Aulton, 29 May, 46 Edward III.
Bynteworth. The manor (extent given), and the hamlet of Asshele, held of William de Melton, knight, as of the ancient demesne of the crown, at a yearly rent of 7l. 13s. 4d., except a toft and 60a. land in Bynteworth which she held of the rector of Bynteworth in socage at a rent of 7s. 8d. yearly. She also rendered 10s. yearly to the king for the said manor and hamlet at the two views of frankpledge of his hundred of Odiham for ‘tethingpeny,’ 4 bushels of wheat yearly to the warden of the hospital of St. John, Godesfeld, for a messuage and 5a. land in Asshele which are held of him in socage, 1d. yearly to the lord of Bradele for a messuage in Asshele which she held of him in socage, and 13s. 4d. yearly for life to Walter Haywode in respect of a rent-charge granted by the said James or his ancestors.
She held the premises for life in joint feoffment with the said James of his inheritance.
She died on 22 January last. Miles son of the said James and Elizabeth, aged 18 years and more, is their heir.

Since her death William Auncel, the escheator, has had possession of the premises and received the issues for the king’s use by virtue of his office in pursuance of a previous writ post mortem.

Nethercudyngton. The manor, with the advowson of its church, held in joint feoffment with Margaret his wife, who survives, of the earl of March, a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of half a knight’s fee.
Asterle. The manor, with the advowson of its church, similarly held of Peter de la Mare, knight, by knight’s service.
Williamescote. The manor, similarly held of the bishop of Lincoln by knight’s service by grant of Geoffrey de Alveton and William, parson of the church of Asterle, by a fine levied in the quinzaine of Midsummer, 31 Edward III.
He died on 16 November last. Thomas his son, aged 7 years and more, is his heir.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. taken at Gloucester, 7 June, 45 Edward III. (fn. 2)
Gloucester. The office of constable of the castle, with the tine (tyna) called ‘Casteltonel’ and a meadow called ‘Castelmede’ belonging to the castle, held for life by the king’s grant.
He died in the parts of Gascony on the eve of St. Bartholomew, that is, 23 August, 43 Edward III, whereupon Robert Aston, late under-constable, entered on the premises and took the issues until 17 February, 44 Edward III, when the king by letters patent granted the constableship with the fees and profits of the castle belonging thereto to Peter de Weel, knight, to hold for life as James had held it; and Peter has had possession of the constableship, tine and meadow ever since.
