Parish of St. Gregory by St. Paul’s. A tenement called ‘le Brodegate’ formerly belonging to John Gysors of Waterstok and Joan Madefrey of London, opposite the brewhouse of St. Paul’s, worth 40s. yearly, as was found by an inquisition taken before Adam de Bury, late mayor and escheator. John Mareys died without heir, so far as the jurors can ascertain. (Another copy of the above). Petition to the king from Alexander son and heir of Thomas Bedyk, alleging that Henry Bedyk, late citizen of London, by his will devised the rents mentioned in the above inquisition to Thomas his son, the petitioner’s father, in tail, that Thomas, being so seised in tail only, enfeoffed the said John Marroys thereof, that the said John had no previous estate in the rents, and that the petitioner had nothing in fee simple by descent from his father (French). |

Writ to the mayor to enquire as to the allegations in the above petition. 20 February, 45 Edward III.
LONDON. | Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 6 March, 45 Edward III. |
Thomas Bedyk had no estate in the rents except in fee tail, because Henry Bedyk, his father, by a will proved, proclaimed and enrolled in the husting of London held on Monday before St. Dunstan, 9 Edward III, bequeathed them to him in tail, with remainder in tail to John son of the same Henry, and with remainder over to the next heir of the blood of Henry. John Marreys acquired the rents from Thomas, and had no other estate in them save by purchase from him. Thomas had a son and heir Alexander, who is now 21 years of age. The aforesaid John son of Henry died without heir of his body.
Writ to the mayor and sheriffs of London and the recorder of the Guildhall to certify the king in Chancery as to the tenor of the aforesaid will of Henry Bedyk. 27 March, 45 Edward III.
Common Pleas held in the husting of London on Monday before St. Dunstan, 9 Edward III.
John de Drokenesford, William de Iford, brother John de Reppus, Sir Thomas de Karlel and Geoffrey de Bredefeld, executors of Henry de Bedyk, came and caused his will, so far as concerned the lay fee contained therein, to be proved by Hugh de Meldebourn and John Turvey, witnesses, as follows:— He bequeathed 65 marks yearly quit rent, out of all his rents in London and the suburb thereof not otherwise bequeathed, to William de Iford and Sir Thomas de Carlel, rector of the church of Bassyngeshawe, London, for the maintenance of seven chaplains to celebrate for his soul and the souls of his relations and benefactors for a year after his death, namely, two in the church of Aldermannebury, two in the church of St. Michael of Bassyngeshawe, two in the church of Fynchesle, and one in the church of Welcomstowe. Each chaplain was to receive 5 1/2 marks yearly, and the balance was to go to the said William and Thomas for their trouble and to distribute alms. He bequeathed 48 marks to the Carmelite Friars to be expended on the fabric of their church in accordance with the disposition of brother John de Reppus, on condition that eight of the Friars should celebrate for his soul for a year. If the testator’s goods and chattels did not suffice for such payment, the bequest was to be levied from all his rents in London and the suburb thereof not otherwise bequeathed. He bequeathed all the remainder of his rents not otherwise bequeathed to his son Thomas in tail, with remainders as in the preceding inquisition. He bequeathed all his messuage in the parish of St. Mary of Althermannebury wherein he dwelt, with all his shops in Althermanbury and the rents under the wall of his said capital messuage, and with the advowson of the church of St. Michael of Bassyngeshawe, to Joan his wife for life, with successive remainders in tail to Thomas and John his sons, and with remainder over to his right heirs. He bequeathed 17 1/2 marks quit rent in the lane called ‘le Brodlane’ in the parish of St. Martin of Bermanscherche to John his son for life, with remainder to his own right heirs. He bequeathed all the rent which he used to receive from the tenements in the parish of St. Margaret of Lothebury held by John de Beseville and John de Todenham of London, carpenter, to William de Iford for life, with remainder to his own right heirs. He bequeathed a robe or 20s. yearly to the same William for life on account of his good service. He bequeathed to John de Pulteneye, citizen of London, the wardship of Thomas his son and heir, together with all the rents &c. bequeathed to the said Thomas in this will, and with all the lands &c. coming to him by hereditary right, for the maintenance of Thomas and his wife and any children they may have during the minority of Thomas. He bequeathed to Joan his wife the wardship of John his son with all the rents bequeathed to him. Dated in the testator’s manor of Fynchesle, ….. Easter, 1335. |
