NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Wilton, Saturday before St. Barnabas, 43 Edward III.
Wilton. The manor, held for life, in dower, of the earl of Arundel, the prior of Castelacre, Osbert de Mundeford and the prior of Flycham, service not known.
She died on 16 May last. Thomas de Ponynges, her son, aged 20 years on 19 April last, is her heir.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Aillesburi, Tuesday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 43 Edward III.
Weston Turvile. A manor, with the advowson of the church, held jointly with John son of John de Molyns, knight, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by feoffment of the said John de Molyns, with remainder to William, brother of the said John son of John, and the heirs male of his body, by a fine levied in the king’s court. The manor is held of the duke of Lancaster by homage and fealty.
She died on Sunday the feast of St. John before the Latin Gate, 43 Edward III. She and the said John died without heir of their bodies, so that the premises remain to the aforesaid William by virtue of the said fine.

WILTS. Inq. taken at Salisbury, 19 June, 43 Edward III.
La Lee and La Gore by Lavynton. The manors, held in the same form as that of Weston Turvile above, with reversion to John de Molyns and his heirs in the event of William de Molyns, brother of John son of John de Molyns, dying without heir male of his body. As John son of John de Molyns died without heir of his body by Joan, the manors remain to William his brother. The manor of La Lee is held of the abbot of Malmesbury, and the manor of La Gore of Robert de la Mare, both by knight’s service.
Joan held no other lands &c. in the county.
Date of death not known. William de Molyns, aged 24 years and more, is living, and is her heir by the form of the gift.

Newynton Bertram. The manor.
Estwelle. The manor, except the lands &c. therein which are held in gavelkind.
She held the above by way of dower assigned to her in Chancery after the death of Michael, her late husband, in right of Thomas son and heir of the said Michael, a minor in the king’s wardship. The premises are held of the king by knight’s service, as of the castle of Dover, as more fully appears in an extent made and returned into Chancery in the aforesaid year after the death of Michael.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
Date of death and heir as in the Norfolk inquisition, except that Thomas de Ponynges is here said to be the son of her and Michael.
SUSSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Ponyngges, 2 June, 43 Edward III.
Ponyngges. The manor (extent given), held in dower &c., as in the Kent inquisition, of Richard earl of Arundel by knight’s service, as of his castle of Lewes. The extent includes a park half a league in circumference, with deer.

She died on Sunday after St. James, 43 Edward III. Mary, daughter of the deceased and the said Henry de Percy, aged 2 years and more, is her heir.

She died on the eve of the Assumption, 42 Edward III, holding:—
Parish of St. Agnes by Aldrichesgate. A third part of a tenement, held by [endowment] of Henry de Percy, her husband. The present Henry de Percy, aged 26 years, is son and heir of her said husband, and the reversion belongs to him. The premises are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city.
She held no other lands &c. in the city or suburbs.
Mary her daughter, aged 3 years, is her heir.

She died on Monday before St. Peter’s Chains last. Mary her daughter, aged 2 years and more, is her heir.
NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Bokenham, Monday after St. Hilary, 43 Edward III.
Old Bokenham. A third part of the manor (extent given), and the whole hundred of Shropham, held of the king in chief as parcel of the barony of Tatishal, services not known. The extent includes a reed bed in the pond (stagno) of Newe Bokenham, 7s. 6d. called ‘londgovel,’ 24 autumn works called ‘coulewerkes,’ a market in Attlebourgh held every Thursday, a share of a market in Newe Bokenham held every Saturday, a share of a court in Newe Bokenham called ‘knyghtiscourt,’ a share of a court there called ‘portemaniscourt,’ a share of the leet of Newe Bokenham held about the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, and a share of the leet of Old Bokenham held about the feast of St. Peter’s Chains.

407. THOMAS SON AND HEIR OF JOHN REYSON.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Thomas, who held by knight’s service of the heir of William de Botreaux, a minor in the king’s wardship, and died while himself a minor in the king’s wardship, and also as to who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 7 February, 43 Edward III.
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. (indented) taken at Forthyngebrigge, 24 February, 43 Edward III.
Overburgate. A messuage and 30a. land, held of the heir of William de Botreaux, late a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died while himself a minor in the king’s wardship on Friday after the Assumption, 35 Edward III. His next heirs are Eleanor wife of John Pyk, aged 32 years and more, and Margery wife of William Cook, aged 30 years and more, his aunts, sisters of the said John Reyson.
The king has been in possession of the premises since the death of John by the hands of John de Nutstede, to whom by his letters patent he committed the custody of two-thirds of all the lands &c. late of John Reyson, together with the marriage of Thomas, during the latter’s minority, for a yearly rent of 13s. 4d.

Aleynesmore. The manor (extent given), held by him, through his guardians, of the bishopric of Hereford, void and then in the king’s hand by the death of Lewis de Cherleton, by knight’s service.
Wylynhale. The hamlet (extent given), held by him, through his guardian, of James le Boteler, earl of Ormond, by knight’s service.
Tregget. The manor, in the march of Wales, held of John Bromwych, knight, by service of socage.
He died on 31 August last, being still a minor. Juliana his sister, aged 12 years on 14 June last, is his heir.

409. JOHN DE RAGHTON, or RAXHTON.
Writ, 20 November, 43 Edward III.
CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Carlisle, Saturday after Christmas, 43 Edward III.
Raxhton and Gaytscales. 4 messuages and 36a. land, held of the king in chief by service of a third part of a serjeanty of keeping an eyrie of hawks in the forest of Inglewod and rendering 4s. 8d. yearly at the Exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff. He held the same by virtue of a feoffment made by John de Lowden, chaplain, to him and Margaret his wife, daughter of William de Stapleton, deceased, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of Margaret. The said Margaret died in John’s lifetime without heir of her body.
Raxhton and Gaytscales. A third part of the lordship, and 10s. rent from divers free tenants, held of the king as parcel of the said third part of the above serjeanty. He held these by feoffment of John son of Henry de Raxhton by virtue of an entail made as above.
William de Stapleton, brother of the said Margaret, aged 30 years and more, is next heir by virtue of the aforesaid entail and feoffment.
Raxhton and Gaytscales. A messuage, 10a. land and 10s. rent, which he had from the lady Margaret de Dacre in exchange for land in Burgh on Sands. They are held of the king by service of a third part of the above serjeanty and by rendering 6s. 8d. at the Exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff.
Raxhton and Gaitscales. A messuage, 10a. land and 10s. rent, which he had from Sir William Lenglis in exchange for land in Paxton, co. Huntingdon. They are held of the king as last above.
Langholm. 4 tenements, held in right of Eleanor, his wife, of the king in chief by service of rendering 15s. yearly at the Exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff.
Gamelsby. 3 tenements and half a watermill held in right of Eleanor, his wife, of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Cruddayk. 3 tenements, held in right of Eleanor, his wife, of the king in chief by service of rendering 10s. yearly at the Exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff.
Blakthwayt. A plot so called, held in right of Eleanor, his wife, of the king in chief by service of rendering 15s. yearly at the Exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff.
Crinkledyk. A tenement, held in right of Eleanor, his wife, of the king in chief by service of rendering 2d. at the Assumption for cornage.

410. ROBERT DE RAYMES.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Robert, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 20 April, 43 Edward III.
NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunday the feast of SS. Simon and Jude, 43 Edward III.
Aydenhall. The manor.
Ayedon. A moiety of the town.
Bolom. A moiety of the manor.
Grenelyghton. A plot.
All held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee and a half, as a moiety of the barony of Bolom.
Bolom. A mediety of the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief.
Estburneton. The town is held of the said moiety of the barony by William de Hesilrig by service of one knight’s fee and by rendering 13s. 4d. yearly for ward of Newcastle upon Tyne and 14d. for cornage at the feast of St. Cuthbert.
Le Shortflat. The manor, held by the said Robert of the barony of Bolbek by service of one knight’s fee and a fourth part of a fee. The following are held of the said manor:—
Cambowe. The manor, held by Robert de Fenwyk by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee and by rendering 6s. 8d. yearly for ward of the castle aforesaid and 14d. for cornage.
Shafthowe. The manor, held by Robert ……., son and heir of John de Aynesle, a minor, by service of one knight’s fee and by rendering 13s. 4d. for ward of the castle aforesaid and 14d. for cornage.
Hawyk. The town, held by Alan del Strother by service of a third part of a knight’s fee and by rendering of 4s. yearly for ward of the said castle and 14d. for cornage.
The said Robert died in the pestilence on 10 October, 23 Edward III.
Nicholas his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.
The king assigned the tenements in Shortflat to Agnes late the wife of Robert as dower; and because Robert had been sheriff and escheator in Northumberland, the king committed to her the keeping of two-thirds of all the lands which had been his until his debts to the king should be fully satisfied. Agnes was in possession of the said two-thirds for six years following Robert’s death, rendering 10 marks yearly to the king, according to an extent made by the sheriff, who was then escheator. After that time the king committed the custody of the two-thirds on the same conditions to Robert de Herle, who was in possession for seven years. After that time William de Raygate, then escheator, [and] John de Scutherskelf, late escheator, were in possession and accounted in the Exchequer for the issues until 27 November, 42 Edward III, since when they have been in the possession of Thomas de Musgrave, escheator, who is to answer therefor. In 34 Edward III the tenements in Shortflat were taken into the king’s hand by William de Nessefeld, escheator, because Agnes, being the king’s widow, had married Robert de Louther without the king’s licence. From that time until 27 November, 42 Edward III, they were in the possession of the said William, William de Raygate, and John de Scutherskelf, who answered for the profits; and since then they have been in the possession of Thomas de Musgrave, who will so answer. Agnes died on 8 October, 36 Edward III.

Wlonkeslowe. A moiety of the hamlet, held of the king in chief, jointly with Alina his wife, who survives, by feoffment of Richard de Yorton, chaplain, and Vivian de Stuche, made with the king’s licence, by service of providing a man on foot for 14 days at the castle of Montgomery when there is war in Wales.
Stuche. The hamlet, held of William de Ferrariis by service of rendering 18d. yearly.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

Berlyng and Burghham. The manors, held in dower after the death of Geoffrey her husband, the reversion belonging to William de Say, son and heir of Geoffrey. The manors are held of the king by knight’s service, as of the crown.
She died on 28 July last. William de Say, of full age, son of Geoffrey, is the next heir of Geoffrey and Maud.

Hammes. The manor, which she and Geoffrey held in tail male, with remainder to the right heirs of Geoffrey, by gift and grant of Thomas de Hethe. Bocstede. The manor, which she held jointly with Geoffrey her husband and William her son by gift and grant of Richard de Chuderlegh, parson of the church of Marmehull, and John Cramphorne to the said Geoffrey, William and Maud and the heirs of the bodies of Geoffrey and Maud, with remainder after the death of William to the right heirs of Geoffrey, as appears by a charter shewn to the jurors. The manor is held of John Waleys, knight, by service of rendering 12d. yearly at his manor of Glynde.

Germeston by Webbeleye. A messuage, 60a. arable, a parcel of meadow and a grove of underwood, held of Edmund, son and heir of the said late earl. The king had the issues thereof from the time of her death by the hand of Philip de Lutteleye, late escheator.
She died on 3 October, 35 Edward III. John son of John Seint Owayn of Burton, aged 20 years and more on 14 August last, is her heir.

415. RICHARD DE SALTEBY of Grantham.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Grantham, Saturday after St. Denis, 43 Edward III.
Heryerdby and Grantham. A messuage and a carucate of land which he acquired from Robert de Whitwell, held of the king in chief, service not known.
Grantham. A messuage, held of the earl of Cambridge by one attendance yearly at his court of Grantham.
The said Richard held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Thursday after St. James, 43 Edward III. Thomas his son, aged 3 years and more, is his heir.
Commission to Thomas de Ingelby, Thomas de Fulnetby, sheriff of Lincoln, Roger de Meres and Walter de Kelby, escheator in the county of Lincoln, to enquire by what service the said Richard held the messuage and carucate of land in Heryardeby, what other lands &c. he held in the county, who is his heir and of what age, and who have had possession of his lands &c. since his death. 28 January, 44 Edward III.

Heryerdeby. A messuage and a carucate of land, acquired as above. They are held of the king in chief in socage, as of the ancient socage of Grantham, by fealty and the service of one appearance at the court of Grantham, and not by any knight’s service. He acquired them from Robert de Whitewell.
Grantham. A messuage (as in the last inquisition).
Being of full and good memory he gave all his other lands &c. and his goods in the county to John de Bokyngham, bishop of Lincoln, Sir John Sharp, parson of the church of Somerby, Geoffrey, vicar of the church of Grantham, and Adam de Eyleston, their heirs and assigns, without any condition or fraud.

On Wednesday before St. James last he alienated the following by charter to John bishop of Lincoln, John Sharp, parson of the church of Somerby, Geoffrey, vicar of the church of Grantham, and Adam de Eyleston, but without any condition or fraud to defraud the king of the wardship thereof:—
Gunwardeby. A messuage and 2 carucates of land.
Grantham. A messuage and 5 shops and other lands &c.
Dunsthorp. A messuage and a carucate of land.
These three items were held of the same earl in socage.
Westby. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of John de Parys by knight’s service.

Since the alienation the above grantees have taken all the issues of the premises alienated. Walter de Kelby, escheator, has had possession of the premises in Heryerdby and Grantham whereof Richard died seised, and has taken the profits since his death for the king’s use by reason of the minority of the heir.

The manor (extent given), held by gift of the king to him and the heirs male of his body by the services due before it came to the king’s hand, namely, part of William de Ufford and Joan his wife, as of the castle of Framelyngham, by service of 1d. yearly, part of the heirs of John Beumund by service of 13s. 4d., and part of Roger de Huntyngfeld by service of a third part (?) of a knight’s fee. The extent includes a small park with deer, a leet held at Whitsun, and foreign leets held at the same feast in the hundred of Plomisgate jointly with the prior of Ely …… (The rest is mostly torn away.)
NORFOLK AND SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Costeseye, Monday before St. Edmund the King and Martyr, 43 Edward III.
Costeseye. The manor (extent given), formerly held for life by John de Claveryngg by grant of Edward II. The reversion was granted by the present king to the earl and the heirs male of his body, and he held it after John’s death during his life and died seised thereof. It is held of the king, as the jurors understand, but the services they do not know. The extent includes a park with deer, a water-mill beyond ‘Westmille’ with the fishery of its pond, a fulling-mill with its fishery, the fishery of a stew by Fybrigg, the fishery of Baubourgh, a warren, a leet held about Whitsun, and a court held once before Michaelmas and once before Easter. The manor is charged from time immemorial with a yearly pension of 10l. to the abbot of Bonreppos.
Bourgh. The manor (extent given), similarly held in tail male of the king’s gift by the services due before it came to the king’s hand, namely, part of the prior of Castelacre by service of 5s. yearly, part of the lord of Bramton by service of 3s. and of the abbot of St. Edmund’s by service of 3s., and part of the rector of Bourgh by service of 20d. and of Roger de Fybrigg by service of 2d. The extent includes a park, fairs held on the feasts of St. Nicholas and the Annunciation, and a leet at Michaelmas.
Brampton. 2a. meadow, held in demesne as of fee of the lord of Bourgh.
Heynisford. 100s. rent, held in demesne as of fee of the duke of Lancaster by knight’s service.
Hekelyng. A messuage and 16a. land late of Nicholas Chamberleyn, held in demesne as of fee of the earl of Pembroke and other lords, services not known.
Wynterton. A leet, and a market every Thursday, held in demesne as of fee.
Baketon. 20l. yearly rent to be received from the prior of Bromholm in respect of a fifteenth part (quindena) of the manor, as parcel of the honor of Eye. He was seised of the said rent to him and the heirs male of his body.
Norfolk and Suffolk. 66l. 16s. 8d. rent to be received by the hands of the sheriff out of the first farms and issues of the counties. He held the same by the king’s gift to him and the heirs male of his body, as the king’s charter testifies.
Causton. The manor (extent given), together with 20l. yearly rent out of the issues of the county of Suffolk in the name and honour of earl of Suffolk, and the castle, town, manor, and honor of Eye, the manor of Thorndon, the town of Haghele, and the hundreds of Hertismere and Stowe, co. Suffolk, held by gift of the king to him and the heirs male of his body by service of one knight’s fee. The extent includes rents called ‘keyepans’ and ‘strikyngsilver,’ a market every Wednesday, and fairs on the feasts of St. Agnes and St. Peter’s Chains.
