|
Writ, 8 July, 41 Edward III. | |
NORTHUMBERLAND. | Inq. taken in the castle of Newcastle upon Tyne, Thursday after the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 41 Edward III. |
Meldon. The manor, in the hands of tenants at will rendering 4l. yearly, held to her and the heirs male of the body of William her late husband, with remainder to Margery daughter of the said William and her heirs. It is held of the king in chief by knight’s service, [to wit, by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee]. (fn. 3)
Molesdon. Lands &c., as in the last inquisition. Ripplyngton. A moiety of the town, as in the last inquisition. Chapyngton. A messuage and 20a. land, as in the last inquisition. Particulars of her dealings with the manor of Camboys &c., as in the last inquisition. Date of death as above. Richard son of Richard Scot son of the aforesaid Margery, lately deceased (defuncte), is heir both of Margery and of Isabel to the manor of Meldon and lands in Molesdon. Other heirs as in the last inquisition. Pleas in the Chancery. Recital of the proceedings of the said Isabel with regard to the manor of Camboys, as above. John de Strevelyn, appearing in the Chancery at Westminster in the month of Michaelmas, 41 Edward III, says that, whereas it is alleged by the above inquisition that Isabel died seised of the manor of Camboys and tenements in Westdicheburn and Bedelyngton belonging thereto, and of a messuage and 20a. land in Chapyngton, the tenements alleged to be in Westdicheburn are in Slikburn West. He denies that he holds any tenements in any town in the county called Westdicheburn; and he says that Isabel in her lifetime divested herself of the tenements in Slikeburn West and of the said manor and the tenements in Chapyngton and Bedelyngton to him and John his son, now deceased, for their lives, with successive remainders to Isabel daughter of Richard Scot of Newcastle upon Tyne and the heirs of her body, and to Agnes de Dudden and her heirs, and that he and John his son, being so seised of the manor and tenements, demised them to the said Isabel de Denom for 40 years at a yearly rent of 40l., so that at her death she had no estate in the premises except for that term. All this he is prepared to prove. Michael Skillyng, who sues for the king, says that Isabel de Denom died seised of the premises in her demesne as of fee, and that John de Strevelyn and John his son were not seised thereof during her life. Both parties put themselves on the country, and a day is given to them to be coram rege in the quinzaine of Hilary next. (fn. 4) |
