Writ of certiorari to the escheator at the instance of James de Pykeryng, knight, to whom on 7 November, 36 Edward III, the king by letters patent granted for 100 marks the custody of the lands &c. in Wynmerley late of Thomas de Haveryngton, knight, who held of the king as of the manor of Wyresdale which belonged to William de Coucy deceased, in the king’s hand through Thomas’s death and the minority of his heir; the said James having now given the king to understand that the same Thomas held nothing there at the time of his death, but that the lands in question came into the king’s hand by the death of John de Haveryngton of Farleton, who held them of the king in chief, as of the said manor, and by reason of the minority of his heir, as was found by an inquisition, and are still in the king’s hand, so that he, James, having ignorantly in asking for the custody described the lands as first above, has nothing for his 100 marks. The escheator is to enquire which is correct. 4 November, 38 Edward III.
Endorsed: The attached inquisition was taken by Robert de Blakeburn, the escheator’s deputy. The specified lands are in the king’s hand by the death of John de Haryngton. No lands are in the king’s hand by the death of Thomas de Haryngton.
LANCASTER. Inq. (indented) taken at Preston, Saturday after St. Martin, 38 Edward III.
Thomas de Haryngton held no lands or tenements in Wynmerlegh of the king or otherwise; but John de Haryngton of Farleton, who died on Monday after the Assumption, 32 Edward III, held there a messuage and about 40a. land of the king in chief, as of the manor of Wyresdale which belonged to William de Coucy deceased and is in the king’s hand. After the death of John de Haryngton, and on account of his death and not of that of Thomas de Haryngton, the premises were taken into the king’s hand by William de Nessefeld, escheator, by reason of the minority of Nicholas son and heir of the same John, and have been in the king’s hand ever since. They are the same lands that James de Pykeryng, knight, paid 100 marks for. The said Nicholas is, and was at the time of the taking of the premises into the king’s hand, brother and heir of the said Thomas de Haryngton.
