447. | ROLAND DE VAUX, the younger. |
Writ, Wyndesore, 23 August, 36 Edward III.
CUMBERLAND. | Inq. taken at Penreth, Tuesday before All Saints, 36 Edward III. |
Trethermane. The manor (extent given), held of Sir Ranulf de Dacre, lord of Gillesland, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee and suit to his court of Irthington every three weeks. The extent includes a fortalice (forcellettum) of stone and a water-mill worth a ‘skep’ of oatmeal yearly, price 6s.
Morthwayt. Tenements so called, held in right of his wife, deceased, of the lord of Gillesland by homage and suit to the court of Gillesland every three weeks. [Name torn away.] 30a. land, held of the lord of Gillesland, as of the manor of Burgh [by Sands?], by service of rendering 10d. yearly for cornage at the Assumption and 10s. to the said lord at Michaelmas and Easter, and by suit to the court of Burgh every three weeks. Kalddecotes. A messuage with 3a. land, held of Sir Gilbert de Culwen, the elder, by service of rendering 2s. 6d.; 21a. land, held of the bishop of Carlisle by service of rendering 2d. yearly for cornage at the Assumption and 6s. 8d. to the bishop at Michaelmas and Easter; and 3a. meadow. Torcrossok. The manor, which was held of right from time immemorial of the ancestors of the lord of Gillesland as of the fee of Gillesland, whose heir, the present Sir Ranulf de Dacre, knight, is living, by service of a fifth part of a knight’s fee and by suit to the court of Irthyngton every three weeks. Andrew de Hartcla acquired the manor from a certain Richard de Richm’, and Andrew and Richard held it of Sir Ranulf de Dacre, then lord of Gillesland, as of the right of Margaret his wife, whose heir and son the present Sir Ranulf is. All who held it from time immemorial held it by the aforesaid services, until it came into the king’s hand by the forfeiture of the said Andrew de Hartcla. After that forfeiture king Edward II gave it to Roland de Vaux, father of the aforesaid Roland the younger, by charter, to hold by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee and by service of rendering 26s. 8d. yearly at the Exchequer of Carlisle and doing the services due to the other chief lords of the fee. The above rent the present king released to Roland the father and his heirs by charter. Before the forfeiture of Andrew de Hartcla the manor was never held of the king in chief, nor of any other lords except the lords of Gillesland as above. Roland the younger held no other lands &c. in the county or elsewhere. He died on Friday before the Assumption last. Roland his son, aged 3 years, is his heir. |
|
Writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer, quoting the above inquisition so far as it relates to the manor of Torcrossok, and requiring them to examine the Book of Fees and Domesday Book and other rolls and memoranda of the Exchequer for the tenure of that manor, Ranulf Dacre having prayed the king to remove his hand therefrom. The manor was taken into the king’s hand by reason of the minority of Roland the younger, son and heir of the aforesaid Roland, and because in the enrolment of the charter of Edward II it is said that the manor, before it came into the king’s hand by the aforesaid forfeiture, was held of Edward II. 18 June, 37 Edward III.
Endorsed: Enrolled in Trinity term, 37 Edward III.
(1) No mention of the manor was found in the Book of Fees or Domesday Book; but on examination of other rolls and memoranda of the Exchequer it was found in the particulars of the account of Gilbert Culwen, Richard de Berewis and Adam Burton, collectors in Cumberland of the aid granted in 20 Edward III for knighting the king’s eldest son, that Roland de Vallibus holds Torcrossok for a fifth part of a knight’s fee of Margaret de Dacre, who holds the barony of Gillesland of the king in chief for two knights’ fees. There is not at present in the Exchequer any other account touching the manor of Torcrossok. (2) This writ and prayer having been read before the Council in Chancery, Ranulf was told to sue the king to annul the aforesaid charter whereby the king’s father gave the manor to Roland the elder to hold of the king himself, if he should think fit. |
