430. WILLIAM DE STAPILTON.
Writ, 8 May, 36 Edward III.
CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Penreth, Tuesday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 36 Edward III.
Edenhale. King Henry, the king’s progenitor, gave the manor of Edenhale to Peter de Brus and his heirs in fee, to hold of the king by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee for all service. Afterwards by hereditary descent Robert de Brus held it of king Henry, the king’s greatgrandfather. Afterwards Adam Turpe acquired it in fee with the king’s licence from Robert Brus, and Robert de Turpe, Adam’s son and heir, held it of the king and his heirs by the above service. After his death Juliana and Joan were his daughters and heirs, and Juliana was married to William de Stapleton, now deceased, and died before him, so that the said William at the time of his death held a moiety of the manor by the courtesy of England, of the inheritance of his late wife, of the king in chief by homage and service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee for all service. Although the ancestors of Juliana held the moiety by the above service, the foresters in the king’s forest of Ingelwod take yearly from it for their puture 34s. 8d. and 3qrs. 6bus. of oats rendered in daily and monthly instalments (quolibet die et mense anni secundum porcionem redditus illius), and the king’s bailiffs take for their puture 4s. 4d. rendered yearly, and they claim these putures as fixed services which pertained to them to be taken from the said half manor when the ancestors of Juliana were enfeoffed thereof. (The extent of the moiety is given.)
Hobardby. 2 1/2a. land, held of the king in chief by fealty and by service of rendering 2s. yearly at the Exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff and doing suit of court once (?) a year.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 6 May last. William de Stapilton his son, aged 26 years and more, is his heir.
The jury also say that a messuage and 12a. land, which were parcel of the moiety of the manor of Edenhale, are in the king’s hand and in the custody of the escheator because Adam de Turpe, who held them of the king in chief, gave them in fee to Agnes his daughter without the king’s licence. After the death of Agnes they ought to remain to the aforesaid William son and heir of Juliana, as the jurors understand.
