312. ISABEL LATE THE WIFE OF ROBERT DE CLIFFORD.
Writ, 30 July, 36 Edward III.
CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Penreth, Tuesday before St. Laurence, 36 Edward III.
Skelton. A third part of a third part of the manor, held in dower. The said third part, together with two parts, is held of the king in chief by homage and fealty and the service of rendering at the Exchequer of Carlisle castle by the hands of the sheriff 2s. 9d. yearly at the Assumption for cornage. There is a free tenant there, Nicholas de Greton, who holds a messuage and 20a. land of the above third part and renders 2d. yearly at the Assumption.
Carlton by Penreth. A third part of two parts of the hamlet, and a third part of a water-mill, held in dower of the lands of Sir Robert formerly her husband. The premises are held of the king in chief by fealty and the service of rendering yearly at the Exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff 6s. 1d. at the Assumption.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on the feast of St. James last. Roger son of the same Robert and Isabel, aged 28 years and more, is her heir.
NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Hert, Wednesday the feast of St. Laurence, 36 Edward III.
[DURHAM]. Hert with Hertirpol. A third part of the whole manor (extent given), held in dower of the inheritance of Roger de Clifford, who survives. She held the same of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes a third part of a pair of gilt spurs yearly, rent of a bakehouse, a third part of the windmill of Hert, and a third part of the farm of the town of Hert.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.

Meubourn Maud and Qwale. A yearly rent of 33s. from Richard de Vernon, knight, for the manors.
Bampton Cundale. A yearly rent of 15s. 3d. from Roger de Cundale for the manor.

YORK. Inq. taken at Skipton in Craven, 13 August, 36 Edward III, virtute brevis diem clausit extremum. (fn. 1)
Skipton in Craven. The castle and manor (extent given), held by gift of Master William de Brampton, chaplain, John de Morland, chaplain, and Thomas de Warthecop, chaplain (made by a fine levied in the king’s court in 12 Edward III), to Robert de Clifford, deceased, and the said Isabel, his wife, for their lives, with successive remainders to Robert their son and the heirs of his body, and Roger brother of the last-named Robert, and the heirs of his body. Robert (the younger) is dead without heirs of his body, and Roger survives. The premises are held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by homage and fealty and the service of 2 1/2 knights’ fees, as parcel of the castles &c. late of the earl of Aumale. The extent of Skipton includes a park with deer under the castle, a water-mill, a fulling-mill, a weekly market on Saturday, and fairs on the feasts of St. Martin in the Winter and St. James; and the appurtenances comprise:—

A summary of the valuation follows, totalling 107l. 15s. 9d. yearly, from which must be taken the stipend of a chaplain celebrating time out of mind (ab antiquo) in the chapel of St. John the Evangelist within the castle when the lord is not staying there, [who receives] … (illegible) a quarter of wheat, total for the year 33s. 4d., and a clerk’s gown at Christmas worth 13s. 4d. He shall also have an honourable chamber within the castle, and pasture in Crokerys and Elshowe for 8 oxen, 4 cows and 2 horses, worth 14s. a year, and sufficient timber to repair his houses, and dry wood for fuel.

Oxenwode. 7l. 10s. yearly rent, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, of which 100s. are receivable from John de Forstebury and 50s. from Peter Pypard.
Chelreye. A messuage and a carucate of land, whether held of the king in chief or of John Mautravers, knight, is not known.
Chilton. 5 virgates of land, held by service of rendering 6s. 8d. yearly to the ward of the castle of Wynd,’ whether of the king in chief or of Richard de Wyndelsore as mesne is not known.
Aston and Wynterborn. 2 messuages, 3 carucates of land and 43s. rent, held of the earl of Warwick by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.

KENT. Inq. (indented) taken at Newyngton, 24 November, 35 Edward III, virtute officii escaetrie.
Reynham. The manor of Silhame there (extent given), held of the king in chief together with the manor of Mere, which is in the hand of the earl of Huntingdon, the two manors together being held by service of bearing a white rod at the king’s coronation at the door of the king’s larder. The extent includes vines, dovecots at Swylle and Hurlles, a piece of marsh in Elmele, acreage not known, called ‘Wildemersch,’ and a farm at Michaelmas from divers men, names unknown, of 20qrs. of barley or 4s. 4d. a quarter.
Reynham. 16a. land, held in ‘gavilkynde’ of Philippa, queen of England, service not known; and 50a. pasture, held in ‘gavelkyndes’ of Edmund Bacchild and others unknown.
Tunstall. A tenement, held of Philippa, queen of England, service not known, containing a messuage, 40a. pasture, a farm of 5qrs. of barley or 4s. d. a quarter due from divers tenants, names not known, at Michaelmas, and 3a. wood cut every ten years.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 22 July last. James Donet his son, aged 11 years, is his heir as regards the lands held of the king, and the same James and Andrew his brother, aged 2 years at the Purification next, are his heirs as regards the lands held in ‘gavelkynde.’
William Simme and Guy Elys, executors of the testament of the deceased, have taken possession of the premises.
The manor of Silham is charged by the deceased in 100l., as the jurors understand, to be paid yearly to Robert de Corby.

Mersch. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee; and 2 virgates of land with its meadow, held of Sir John Buttourt, service not known.
No other lands &c. are in the king’s hand by reason of the minority of the said Katharine.
She died on 16 June, 36 Edward III. Michael de la Pole brother of the aforesaid Thomas, aged 30 years and more, is her heir.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Andevere, 5 July, 36 Edward III.
Ramerigg. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by service of a fifth part of a knight’s fee.
The aforesaid Thomas held no other lands &c. in the county which came into the king’s hand by the minority of the said Katharine.
She died on 6 June last. Heir as above.
WILTS. Inq. made at Salisbury, 5 July, 36 Edward III.
Conk. A messuage, held of the king in chief by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee, with 60a. arable, 4a. meadow, pasture in common for 2 horses and 4 oxen, pasture for 150 sheep, a free tenant rendering 10s. 1d. yearly, 14 virgaters of villein land whose rents and services are worth 10s. each yearly, 2 half-virgaters of villein land whose rents and services are worth 5s. each yearly, and pleas &c. of court worth 12d. yearly.
The aforesaid Thomas held no other lands &c. as above in the county.

She died on Friday after the Conception of the Virgin Mary, 35 Edward III. Ranulph de Dacre, parson of the church of Prestcotes, her son, aged 30 years and more, is her heir.

Overkelet. Lands &c. held jointly with Ranulph de Dacre, her late husband, to them and their heirs, of the earl of Lancaster by knight’s service, to wit, a park, a water-mill in ruins, untenanted and paying nothing, 2d. rent of a free tenant, and 4l. 5s. rents of tenants at will; and a plot of land and pasture containing 40a. held in form aforesaid of the earl of Lancaster by fealty and service of 3s. 4d.
Bar in Pulton. 40a. land, held in form aforesaid of the earl of Lancaster, by fealty and service of 7s. 6d. yearly.
She held no other lands &c. in the county, except in the wapentake of Leilondshir’.
She died on 10 December last. Heir as above, aged 36 years and more.

Eccleston. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held for life jointly with Ranulph, her late husband, to them and their heirs, of Richard de Shirburn, knight, and his fellows, lords of the wapentake of Leilondshir’, by homage and the service of doing suit to the said wapentake every three weeks.
She held no other lands &c. in the wapentake.

WESTMORLAND. Inq. taken at Appelby, Wednesday after the Purification, 36 Edward III.
Barton. The manor (extent given), held for her life jointly with Ranulph de Dacre, her late husband, with remainder after her death to their right heirs. The capital messuage is called from of old ‘Trestermot,’ and is within the old moat (fossato), and was held for life by Annora late the wife of John de Lanc’, now deceased, of the inheritance of Ranulph de Dacre aforesaid, and has been in the king’s hand in the custody of the escheator since the death of Annora because the heir of Ranulph de Dacre has not sued his right out of the king’s hand, and is held of the king in chief by homage and service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee. The rest of the manor is held of Sir Thomas de Thwenge by homage and the service of a tenth part of a knight’s fee, as the jurors believe, and by rendering a sore sparrowhawk yearly at St. Peter’s Chains or 12d. The extent includes 80a. at ‘le Aldelathes,’ a several fishery, a small park without deer, a water-mill, rents at Martendale in the forest, a several pasture called ‘Martendaleheved,’ and a fulling-mill there, a ruined water-mill at Sandwyk by Martendale, rents at Patredale, rents and a several pasture at Grisdale, and a ruined water-mill there.
Hoff. The manor (extent given), held of Sir Roger de Clyfford by homage and service of 5s. yearly for cornage. The extent includes a park called ‘Hoffelund.’
Overton. A moiety of the town (extent given), held of the same Sir Roger de Clyfford by homage and service of 22d. yearly for cornage.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Penreth, Tuesday after the Purification, 36 Edward III.
Naward. The castle, and the undermentioned manors, lands &c. with their members, held by the deceased of the king in chief, as of the crown, by homage and fealty and the service of a barony, and by the service of rendering 51s. 8d. yearly for cornage at the Exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff, in form following, to wit:—Ranulph de Dacre and the deceased were seised of the manor of Irthyngton, within which the said castle is situated, and of the manors of Brampton, Burgh over Sands, Kirkeoswald and Laisyngby, and gave them by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence to Robert Parvyng and William de Burgh, parson of the church of Dacre, who having had seisin gave them to the same Ranulph and Margaret for their lives, with successive remainders in tail to William de Dacre their son, Peter de Dacre, William’s brother, Thomas de Dacre, Peter’s brother, and Ranulph de Dacre, Thomas’s brother, and with remainder over to the right heirs of Margaret. The said William de Dacre, Peter and Thomas are dead without heir of their bodies. Ranulph their brother survives. The castle is of no value beyond the cost of repairs by reason that it is near the March and in great peril from the Scots.
Irthyngton. The extent states that there are tenants at will at Kambek paying 27s., and that tenants at will on the manor used to pay 55s. 3d., but now their holdings are waste and without tenants by reason of the destruction done there by the Scots.
Brampton. The extent includes 36a. meadow worth nothing because they cannot be let nor can anything be got from them on account of the abundance of herbage in those parts, divers holdings of tenants at will which have been unoccupied for many years by reason of the destruction done by the Scots, also a fishery now of no value, divers lands at Kumkagh formerly held by tenants at will but long since waste, a common brewhouse, tenants at will rendering 111s. yearly there and in the hamlets of le Wodhous, Wra, Brakanhill, Ecchesby, Milneton and Northwod, rents of tenants at will in Cumquityngton, and lands there formerly held by tenants at will now long since waste, rents &c. at Ingelwramosse and Kulherny, a mill at Cumquityngton, rents and waste land formerly held by tenants at will in Hayton, and a water-mill there, rents and waste land formerly in the hands of divers tenants at Rochebourn, Askerton and Walton Wode, the like at ‘le Northmore,’ the like at Fulwod, and a park with deer at ‘le Brigwod.’
Burgh over Sands. The extent includes a several fishery in places called Polburgh, Raynersete and Frechnet (?), rents in various hamlets not named, and divers holdings of tenants at will which have been unoccupied for many years for the above cause.
Kirkosewald. The extent includes a park with deer, rents in the manor of Laysyngby, a third part of a mill in Dacre, rents at Soulby, Neubyggyng, Blencowe, Greyrig and Mossedale, a water-mill at Mossedale rendering 6 ‘eskepp’ of poor meal yearly, and a fulling-mill there, and perquisites of court in the manors of Kirkosewald and Laysyngby worth 13s. 4d. yearly.
Irthyngton, Brampton, Burgh, Kirkosewald and Laysyngby. There are also in these manors divers rents of foreign tenants, including 8s. 11 1/2d. for cornage.

William de Bohun, late earl of Northampton, who then had the honor of Reilegh with its knights’ fees &c. of Philippa queen of England at farm, seized the premises into his hand by reason of the minority of the aforesaid John the heir, and was in possession from the time of the death of Edmund until Wednesday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 34 Edward III, when he himself died. William de Hinton, bailiff of the honor, directly after the earl’s death seized the premises into the king’s hand, and has received the profits until now and accounts for them in the Exchequer, as the jurors understand.

YORK. Inq. taken at Gisburn in Clyveland, Wednesday after St. Hilary, 36 Edward III.
Skelton in Clyveland. The castle and manor (extent given), with the undermentioned lands &c. in Mersk, held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by homage and fealty and the service of a knight’s fee and a half; except 2 carucates in Mersk which are held of Sir Henry de Percy by knight’s service. The premises were held by the deceased in tail, with remainder to the right heirs of John de Faucomberge his father, by the present king’s charter of licence. The extent of Skelton includes the castle, a park called ‘le West Park’ with deer, a park called ‘Maugre’ with deer, 3 water-mills, and profits from peat and heath (turbis et bruera).
Mersk. A capital messuage, 36 bovates of land in demesne, 80a. meadow in demesne, a windmill, 37 bovates of land in the hands of tenants at will rendering 12l. 13s. 6d., 30s. rents of cottars, and perquisites of court in the manor worth 16s. 4d. There is also a fourth part of wreck of sea from Renneswyk to Yarum.
Langbergh. The bailiwick of the wapentake, held in form aforesaid of the king in chief by fealty and the service of rendering 40 marks yearly, which rent the king has granted to Thomas de Alberton and his heirs. The bailiwick is only worth 17l. 6s. 8d. on account of the poorness of that country.
Brantyngham. A messuage and lands, held in fee of the king in chief as parcel of the manor of Skelton by the service aforesaid.
Wod Apelton. A messuage and 2 bovates of land, held in fee of the abbot of St. Mary’s, York, by fealty.
Estbronne. The manor, held jointly with Isabel his wife, who survives, to them and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs. The manor is held of the king in chief by knight’s service.

Alwardbury. 20a. meadow, 66s. 4 1/2d. rents of free tenants, and pleas &c. of court worth 18d. yearly, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Bymmerton. A messuage, 36a. land, 4a. meadow and 65s. rent, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, but for what part of a fee is not known.

Eleanor de Walkyngton held for life of the inheritance of the deceased the manors of West Grimstede, co. Wilts, and Eukesbury, co. Hants, and survived the deceased. These manors are held of the king in chief by knight’s service.

Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Richard, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 22 May, 36 Edward III.
HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Chepyng Barnet, Thursday before Whitsun, 36 Edward III.
He had no lands &c. in the county.
He died in London about Easter, 6 Edward III, as the jurors understand. Godard atte Slade, his grandfather, had two daughters, Alice and Asselina, Alice being the mother of the deceased Richard. Richard had a son John, who had issue John and Alice. The last-named John died without heir of himself. His sister Alice had a daughter Sarah, who had a son Thomas, who died without heir of himself. Asselina had a husband John atte Wode, and they had a son called John Drivere, who had issue, John Drivere his son. The latter is heir to the deceased, and to the aforesaid Thomas, the deceased’s kinsman and heir. He is 50 years of age and more.

The two John Driveres are both given the alias of atte Wode. William Colyn, who claims to be next heir in blood to the deceased, is neither his heir in blood nor of his stock (progenies).

Alweston. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service, whereof she was enfeoffed jointly with Walter her husband, deceased, to them and the heirs of their bodies. The extent includes meadow called ‘Middelhongeresmede’ and pastures called ‘Middelhonger’ and ‘Le Conynger.’
Langeleye. The hundred, belonging to the manor of Alweston.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on Thursday before the Circumcision last. Peter son of the said Walter and Pernell, aged 7 years, is her heir.

Middlesex, are with the king’s licence charged with 20l. to be paid yearly to Agnes late the wife of William de Ufton, as appears by a charter sealed with the seal of the Chancery and dated in the king’s eleventh year.

The premises are held of the heir of the earl of Hereford, a minor in the king’s wardship, by the services of rendering 3s. 4d. yearly to the manor of Enefeld, making one attendance at the earl’s court at Hereford at Michaelmas, and making one attendance at the earl’s court at Blankchapultone at Michaelmas. The premises are charged as above.

He held nothing in the county at the time of his death, having alienated to Richard his son, and his heirs, by charters of feoffment, all that he held therein, to wit:—
West Smythefeld. A messuage with 6 shops annexed, held of the prior of St. John of Jerusalem in England by service of rendering 13s. 4d. yearly; and another messuage, held of the same prior by service of rendering 2s. 6d. yearly.
Portepull. 4a. land, held of the dean and chapter of St. Paul’s by service of rendering 12d. yearly; and 3a. land, held of the lady de Ferreres by service of rendering 3s. yearly.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 3 November, 34 Edward III. All the above he alienated 10 weeks before his death. Peter Gray his kinsman, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

Estbury. 24a. arable, 1/2a. meadow, pasture for 40 sheep, and 2s. rent, held of the king in chief by service of a fortieth part of a knight’s fee; and a messuage and 2 1/2a. arable, held of the prior of Poughele by service of 2s. yearly.
He died 10 years and more ago, as the jurors reckon, but the day and year they know not. Agnes de Gomeldon, aged 40 years and more and married to William atte Dauwe, and Joan, aged 36 years and more and married to John atte Mulle, his sisters, are his heirs.
Since the said John’s death the king has been in possession of the premises by his escheators, the heirs not having sued their right.
