WILTS. Inq. made at Salisbury, 24 September, 36 Edward III.
Radelynch. The manor, held in joint feoffment with Thomas de Boukelande his brother, who survives, by grant of Ralph de Boukelande made by a fine levied at Westminster on the morrow of the Purification, 6 Edward III. The manor is held of the bishop of Winchester by service of 13s. 4d. yearly.
He died on Friday the feast of the Annunciation last. The aforesaid Thomas de Boukelande his brother, aged 40 years and more, is his heir.
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Andevere, 26 September, 36 Edward III.
Broukle in the New Forest. The manor (extent given), held of Philippa, queen of England, while she was alive, as of the manor of Lyndhurst in the said forest, and after her death of the king, by service of 30s. 6d. as parcel of a certain vaccary. He held the said manor in joint feoffment with Thomas his brother, who survives, and Nicholas his brother, deceased, by the king’s charter of licence and by a fine levied in the king’s court.
Boukelande in Nether Wollop. The manor, held of the treasurer of York at fee-farm for 100s. yearly. He held it in fee tail to him and the heirs male of his body, with remainder to Thomas de Boukelande his brother, who survives, and the heirs male of his body.
Burgh[ton]. A messuage and half a carucate of land, held of the prior of Portesmouth by fealty and service of 11s. 6d. yearly, in fee tail as above, and with remainder as above.

MIDDLESEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Westminster, 3 May, 36 Edward III.
Saveye. The deceased and John, earl of Richmond, had jointly certain tenements called the ‘Saveye,’ which were taken into the king’s hand by a writ of diem clausit extremum on the death of Henry duke of Lancaster. They are held of the king in chief, service not known. Partition has not yet been made to the heirs of the duke, but the premises have all the time been in the custody of the said earl and Maud by the king’s commitment, as the jurors understand. They comprise the messuage called the ‘Saveye,’ 2 shops belonging thereto, worth 10s. a year when occupied, now let at 4d. a week, 7 shops worth 30s. a year when occupied, now let at 1 1/2d. a week each, and 16s. 6d. rent of free tenants.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Rothewelle, 6 May, 36 Edward III.
Rothewelle, Wysshton, Navesby and Glapthorn. The manors, with two leets at Denforde, Cotherstoke and Barton, held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a rose at Midsummer. Of these Hugh de Audelay, late earl of Gloucester, Ralph, baron of Stafford, and Margaret his wife, enfeoffed John de Gynewelle, canon of the church of Salisbury, and Master Ralph de Gatesbury, by a fine levied in the king’s court, that they might grant them to the aforesaid earl for his life, with remainder to Ralph, son of the aforesaid Ralph, and Maud his wife, daughter of Henry then earl of Derby, and the heirs of their bodies, and with reversion in default of such heirs to the aforesaid Ralph and Margaret his wife, and their heirs. On the death of Ralph son of Ralph and Maud, the latter holding under the aforesaid grant, without heirs of their bodies, the premises ought to revert to the said Ralph and Margaret.

PEMBROKE. Carreu. The castle and manor with the members thereof (extent of the manor given), held of John de Hastynges, son and heir of Laurence de Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke, in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service. The manor is charged with yearly payments of 100s. to William de Carreu son of the said John, 100s. to Edmund brother of the said William, 100s. to John de Wroxale, and 66s. 8d. to Henry Godale, for their respective lives. These charges were made after the deceased married Elizabeth his wife, who survives.
He held no other lands in the county or march.

DEVON. Inq. taken at Exeter before John de Monte Acuto and John de Ferrers of Churcheston, on Tuesday before the Nativity of the Virgin, 38 Edward III.
William Chaillou, parson of the church of Stoke Flemyng, gave the manors of Otery Mohun and Monketon in 16 Edward III to the said John and Margaret and the heirs of their bodies, so that John de Carreu died seised of them in fee-tail. Leonard de Carreu is son and heir of the aforesaid John and Margaret.
DEVON. Inq. taken before the same at Kyngesbrigge, Tuesday after the Assumption, 38 Edward III.
The manor of Galmeton was granted to John and Margaret, as above. The said Leonard is their heir.
Commission, as above, to John de Monte Acuto and the rest, substituting the names of William Chaylou, William de Stedham and David Boghhan, as donors of the manors to John and Margaret. 15 July, 38 Edward III.
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Andevere, Monday before St. Denis, 38 Edward III, before Michael Skillyng and Peter de Brugges.
John de Carreu was seised of the manor of Andeport and gave it to William de Stedham, vicar of the church of Andeport, and David Boghhan, who afterwards gave it to him and Margaret his first wife, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs. This feoffment in fee-tail was made in 16 Edward III. Leonard is son and heir of the said John and Margaret.

301. RALPH SON AND HEIR OF WILLIAM DE CLENDON, an idiot.
Writ to the escheator to enquire whether the said Ralph is an idiot from birth, and if not, since when, and whether he has lucid intervals, and also as to his lands and age. 16 February, 36 Edward III.
NORTHAMPTON. The escheator in person at Roth’ on Thursday before Holy Trinity, 36 Edward III, examined the said Ralph and found him an idiot from birth. Afterwards he enquired by a jury (names given), who say that the said Ralph is an idiot from birth, and that there are divers lands &c. in Clendon, Rothewell, Rhyston and Thorp Malesoveres of his inheritance, which are held of the manor of Roth’ as of the honor of Gloucester by homage and fealty and the service of rendering 20s. yearly. Two parts of these are in the hands of Ralph; the third part is in the hand of Katharine late the wife of John de Glendon (sic) by way of dower. The premises descended to Ralph after the death of the said John, his brother, by inheritance.
Ralph is 30 years of age and more.

HEREFORD. Inq. taken at Westhyde, Wednesday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 36 Edward III.
Westhyde. A third part of a fourth part of the manor, held of Adam Everyngham, knight, by service of 1d. yearly, was taken into the king’s hand by reason of the madness of the said John.

Hovyngham, Calveton, Ryton and Fryton. Lands &c. with services of free tenants, which the deceased on Monday before the Ascension last gave to Roger de Sleghtholm and Richard Coges, his brother, chaplains, and John del Bakhous of Ryton, who are still seised; viz:—
Hovyngham. 4 messuages and 100a. land, held of Sir John de Moubray aforesaid by fealty and service of 16s. yearly.
Calveton. A toft and half a bovate of land, held of the same by fealty and service of 6d. yearly.

Hovyngham. A messuage and 2 bovates of land in Hovyngham have been in the king’s hand for many years and in the custody of the escheator on account of a trespass committed by Roger de Moubray, who held them of king Henry, the king’s great-grandfather, as parcel of his manor of Hovyngham, in alienating them in fee to Philip Rabet, deceased, without the king’s licence. These were lately held by the said John Coges, and are still in the escheator’s custody on account of the said trespass.
