APPENDIX

Note on the order of the dignitaries

The order of the dignitaries in this volume has presented some problems, since there were two alternative orders in which the dignitaries sat, their order in chapter and in choir.

1. Order in chapter.
Dean
Precentor
Archdcn. of Wells
Treasurer
Chancellor
Archdcn. of Bath
Archdcn. of Taunton
Abbot of Muchelney
Abbot of Bec
Abbot of Athelney
Subdean
Succentor
Provost
(K. Edwards, English Secular Cathedrals
(Manchester, 1949) p. 178n).
2. Order in choir.
Dean
Precentor
Archdcn. of Wells
Archdcn. of Bath
Chancellor
Treasurer
Archdcn. of Taunton
Abbot of Muchelney
Abbot of Athelney
(Wells Cathedral: its foundation, constitutional history and statutes,
ed. H. E. Reynolds (Leeds, 1880)
pp. 1-2).

For the convenience of the reader the dignitaries have been arranged with the archdeacons together and the abbots listed in accordance with their prebends, and a similar rule has been observed for the provost since he held the prebend of Combe Duodecima.

There was similar difficulty in deciding on an arrangement for the fifty-five cathedral prebends, but since so many of the prebends have the same name, e.g. fifteen Combes, five Wedmores and two Milvertons and since several alternative and seemingly arbitrary arrangements of the prebends have been found in different authorities, it was decided, with the permission of the late Dean Woodforde, that the prebends should be listed in alphabetical order. The Diocesan Handbook has been used as a guide to the names of the prebends, with the exception of those which no longer exist, e.g. Long Sutton, North Curry, etc. in which cases the modern place name has been used. Two different orders in which the prebends are found are listed below; the first is the list given in Hardy's edition of Le Neve's Fasti, the second is the one made in 1298, on the authority of Dean Haselschawe, to show the distribution of the daily Psalms among the different prebendaries.

Dean Haselschawe's list is printed in 'Prebendal Stalls and Misericords in the Cathedral church of Wells', by C. M. Church (Archaeologia iv 319-42). It is noted in this article that the names of the Wells prebends were listed in another order when they were assessed for taxation in 1291 by commissioners of Pope Nicholas IV. Yet another order can be found in the Valor Ecclesiasticus.
