LIST 25 PREBENDARIES OF NONNINGTON

PREBEND

Nonnington (now Nunnington) in Withington formed part of the manor of Withington and thus was part of the estates of the church of Hereford in the 11th cent., when the nuns of Hereford held two hides there from the bp. (DB I 181d; for discussion, see S. Foot, Veiled Women (2 vols., Aldershot, 2000) I 175-6, II 99). Prob. to be identified with the preb. of Imintinton in the taxation of pope Nicholas IV, where assessed at £12 14s (Taxatio p. 169a); in 1294 the preb. of Nonyntone was assessed at 12m in a list entered into bp. Swinfield's register (Reg. Swinfield p. 305). Valor III 10 assesses this preb. at £12 gross, £11 13s 4d net; its endowments consisted of rents from free and customary tenants, demesne, perquisites and payment of small commons.

Can. of Hereford by 6 Aug. 1275 (Capes, Charters p. 141); occ. as residentiary 28 Feb. 1289 (Reg. Swinfield p. 214); held preb. of Imintinton, prob. Nonnington, c. 1291 (Taxatio p. 169a). Thomas is referred to as d. 30 Nov. 1295 (Reg. Swinfield p. 334), but he may well have d. earlier than this.

John de Shelvinge

Previously preb. of Pion (list 27). Coll. to preb. of Nonnington 3 Feb. 1295 (Reg. Swinfield p. 530; and see list 25); d. by 25 July 1295 when the preb. was given to William de la Gaye (Reg. Swinfield p. 529); prob. identifiable with the John Cheleum to whom 4m 16d were payable 29 Sept. 1295 (Capes, Charters p. 169), in which case the money would presumably have been paid to his executors.

M. William de Gaye (fn. 2)

Coll. to preb. of Nonnington 25 July 1295 (Reg. Swinfield p. 530); prob. identifiable with the William Gore who occ. as resident can., preb. unspecified, 29 Sept. 1295 (Capes, Charters p. 169); occ. in this preb. 2 March 1297 and 8 Apr. 1297 (Cal.
