LIST 26 PREBENDARIES OF NORTON
PREBEND
Norton, one of the benefactions made to the cath. in pre-Conquest times by Wulviva and Godiva, was church demesne in 1086 (DB I 182c) and in the Herefordshire Domesday of c. 1160 × c. 1170 was stated to belong to the cans. (Herefordshire Domesday p. 28). The manor of Norton formed part of the common fund by at least the late 12th cent. (cf. EEA VII no. 201); the preb. of Norton was evidently endowed with a part of the manor. In the taxation of pope Nicholas IV can. John of Scarborough is said to receive 9s ¼d from Norton, evidently his prebendal revenue (Taxatio p. 169a); Norton is listed as a preb. in the taxation list entered into bp. Swinfield's register 1294 (Reg. Swinfield p. 305), but its value is effaced. Valor III 11 assesses the preb. at 43s 2½d.
