Prebendaries of prebends which did not survive

For various reasons, some prebends did not survive. In several of these it is not possible to identify a single prebendary. West Lydford church was granted in prebendam before 1166 (Cal. I 23-4; EEA X p. 1, nos. 48, 166), but went into the communa (Cal. I 403; but cf. Taxatio pp. 197, 201b). Similarly, Broomfield church, granted in prebendam before 1186 (Cal. I 27, 309; EEA X nos. 149, 153; PUE II no. 256), was part of the communa (Cal. I 149, 203, 307). The same is true of Chilcompton church, also granted as a prebend in the 1180s (Cal. I 43; EEA X nos. 153, 165; PUE II no. 256), and also part of the communa (Cal. I 203; Taxatio p. 202b).

The four prebends listed below, however, although they had only short existences, were each certainly held by at least one prebendary.

1. AWLISCOMBE

Church of Awliscombe (Devon) gr. as preb. by Jocelin de Treminet prob. 1180s (Cal. I 55); conf. by kg. Richard I 26 Nov. 1189 (ibid. p. 309); conf. by John the Chanter bp. of Exeter 1186 × c. June 1190 (EEA XII no. 178). Papal conf. to church of Wells, 5 June 1190 (PUE II no. 256). Advowson claimed by Richard de Treminet against cans. of Wells 1200 (Rot. Curiae Regis II 178-9; cf. Curia Regis Rolls II 140); adjudged to him before 1204 (Curia Regis Rolls III 100).

M. John of Tynemouth (fn. 1)

Adm. and inst. to this preb. by Henry Marshal bp. of Exeter on pres. of bp. Savaric, 22 Feb. 1199 or 1200 (EEA XII nos. 213-14). Not called can. when occ. 1199/1200 (Cal. I 489). Preb. of Lincoln, archdcn. of Oxford by 1210 × 1212; d. 1221, between 25 March and Aug. (1 Fasti III 36, 75).

2. BIDDISHAM

Conf. to bp. Giso by kg. Edward Confessor May 1065 (Keynes, 'Giso' app. I no. 9). Not in DB.

Land of Biddisham established as preb. by bp. Robert, assigned to fabric of church of Wells, to support a vicar (EEA X no. 46, for which see below, app. 1). Papal confs. to church of Wells 22 Jan. 1158 (PUE II no. 101) and 15 June 1176 (ibid. no. 159). Gr. by bp. to clerk Herbert of Ilchester c. 1163 × 31 Aug. 1166 of preb. Biddisham until another becomes vacant and then to revert to original use (EEA X no. 52). Claimed by Waleran de Wellesley and his wife; settlement with church of Wells before 22 Dec. 1188 (English Lawsuits from William I to Richard I, ed. R. C. Van Caenegem (Selden Soc. cvi, cvii, 1990-1) II no. 603). Restored to church of Wells for repair of fabric before 8 Aug. 1205 (see below, Ernisius of Coutances). See also Cal. Herbert Poore (le Poer) alias of Ilchester (fn. 2)

Bp.'s clerk, called Herbert of Ilchester, had episcopal gr. of this preb. c. 1163 × 31 Aug. 1166 until another should become vacant (EEA X no. 52). Archdcn. of Canterbury, appd. 1175 (1 Fasti II 14), addressed as such by bp. Reginald c. July 1191 (EEA X no. 106). Also preb. of Lincoln by Sept. 1168 (1 Fasti III 127-8); preb. of Salisbury by 1194 (ibid. IV 122). Bp. of Salisbury, temps. 29 Apr. 1194, cons. 5 June, d. c. 7 Jan. 1217 (ibid. p. 3).

Ernisius of Coutances

Suit between dean and chapter and Ernisius can. settled by papal judges-delegate 1191 × 1205: Ernisius res. this preb. to bp., who restored it to church of Wells towards repair of fabric, but Ernisius was to hold it for his life-time, paying a rent to fabric (Cal. II 551 (no. 26) = ibid. I 50), conf. by bp. Apr. 1195 × 8 Aug. 1205 (EEA X no. 259; cf. Cal. I 51). Occ. as Arnis' de Constant' can. at el. of bp. Jocelin, early 1206 (below, app. 3 no. 31). Occ. as this preb. 17 July 1209 (Som. Fines I 26).

3. BOVEY TRACEY

Church of Bovey Tracey (Devon) gr. as preb. by Oliver de Tracy (Cal. I 490-1, cf. ibid. p. 41); conf. by John bp. of Exeter c. 1188 × 1191 (EEA XII no. 179); conf. by kg. Richard I 26 Nov. 1189 (Cal. I 309). Advowson claimed by Henry de Tracy, son of Oliver, but acknowledged to church of Wells 14 May 1219 (ibid. p. 364). Neither preb. nor communa in 1291 (Taxatio p. 150).

4. DOGMERSFIELD

Dogmersfield (Hants) not in DB. Manor 'restored' by bp. John to monks of Bath July × 23 Sept. 1106 (EEA X no. 3); gr. by kg. Henry I to bp. Godfrey ? 1133 (Regesta II no. 1762; see EEA X p. xxv; cf. EEA X nos. 35, 110-11, 178-9, 212, Cal. I 15).

Advowson of church retained by Bath priory: 20s from church gr. to nuns of Hartley Wintney, conf. by bp. Reginald c. 1189 × 27 Nov. 1191 (EEA X no. 137), conf. by bp. Savaric 19 Sept. 1192 × Lent 1195 (ibid. no. 230); cf. Chart. Bath II 14-15, 17 (nos. 55, 65, 75).

Advowson and another 20s from church gr. by prior and convent to bp. Jocelin, who constituted the 20s a preb. 19 Apr. 1215 (Cal. I 54). Preb. united with new preb. of Wedmore V 29 Oct. 1242 (ibid. p. 60; list 61).
