PREBEND

Church of East Thorney, in East Wittering (W. Suss.); entered under bp. Osbern, Bosham church, 1086 (DB I 17b; cf. AS Chs. of Selsey no. 18 note). First reference to preb. is 5 June 1290 (Chart. Chichester no. 1074 = Cal. Charter Rolls II 349). Agreement between preb. Bracklesham (list 12) and this preb. over watercourse, 6 Apr. 1298 (Chart. Chichester no. 1075). Royal grant of free warren in Thorney and Martinsgrave 5 June 1290 (Cal. Charter Rolls II 349). Also rents in Bracklesham (Inq. Non. p. 356b). See also Inq. Non. p. 366a; VCH Suss. Prob. not yet canon when occ. before 8 May 1281 (Reg. Pecham I 116). First occ. as canon 8 March 1283 (D. Harrison, 'The Surrey portion of the Lewes chartulary', Surrey Archaeol. Collections xliii (1935) 84-112, at pp. 109-10 no. 76) and 29 May 1283 (Reg. Epistolarum Johannis Peckham, ed. C. T. Martin (3 vols., RS lxxvii, 1882-5) II 563-4). Also rector of Epsom (Surrey), occ. 25 Apr. 1285 (Reg. Pontissara I 18). Occ. as canon several times. Occ. as this preb. 5 June 1290 (Chart. Chichester no. 1074 = Cal. Charter Rolls II 349). Last occ. 24 Dec. 1292 (Chart. Chichester no. 904). Certainly died before 26 May 1337, when his successor in this preb. had permission to augment his chantry in St Faith's chapel (ibid. no. 913); presum. died before first occ. of his successor, 6 Apr. 1298.

Subdcn., admitted to church of West Dean, sede vacante, 29 Jan. 1287/8 (Reg. Pecham I 69). First occ. as canon and this preb. 6 Apr. 1298 (Chart. Chichester no. 1075). Dean by Jan. 1318 (2 Fasti VII 4), when presum. transf. to preb. Westgate.
