RSO II 71; see also VCH Berks. III 282, 289-90), though patronage in hands of Sandford family (RSO I 327-8) and interest maintained by Hospitallers and Templars (cf. Sar. Chs. p. 100; see also Reg. PREBENDARIES
Warin of Sandford (fn. 1)
First occ. as can. c. 1170 (Cart. Sandford I no. 15). Also occ. as can. 1175 x 92 (cart. Templars: BL, Cotton MS Nero E. vi (1) fo. 115r). (fn. 2) Ceased to hold this preb. before 1184 (RSO I 216, where given date '1148', but for no good reason). Possibly to be identified with Warner de Sanford who donated a cope by 1214 (RSO II 130, also pd. Ceremonies p. 172), but this may have been Warner de Saunford who occ. without title before 1219 (Cart. Sandford I no. 13).
[Robert of Sandford (fn. 3)
First occ. as can. 7 Jan. 1213/14 (Nova Const.), and prob. can. when occ. 14 Nov. 1215 (C. 479, witnesses omitted in Sar. Chs. p. 79). Also occ. 1215 × Aug. 1220 (RSO II 34). Occ. as can. of Salisbury and dean of St Martin le Grand, London, 29 Sept. and 3 Oct. 1225 (ibid. pp. 37, 43), so therefore to be identified with Luke the chaplain, senior clk. of king's wardrobe (Tout, Chapters I 195-8); chanc. of Lichfield; had royal coll. of archdcnry. of Norwich 9 Nov. 1226 (1 Fasti II 64); also preb. of London (ibid.
