Church of Bitton (Glos.), to which one hide pertained, in existence by 1086, in manor held by a king's thegn (DB I 170c).

Preb. prob. in existence by c. 1150 (Psalter list). Settlement c. 1200 with abbot and convent of St Augustine's, Bristol, over pension due to preb. from church of Wapley (IV/E.5/Prebend of Bitton/1, pd. from C. 212 in Sar. Chs. pp. 58-9; for Wapley and St Augustine's, cf. Reg. G. Giffard II 367 and Taxatio p. 221a).

Pr.-preb.; cantoris side; term of residence c. 1270: Apr.-June.

PREBENDARIES

John de Kenovill

Occ. this preb. c. 1200 (IV/E.5/Prebend of Bitton/1, 'Kenouill', pd. from C. 212 in Sar. Chs. pp. 58-9). Said in c. 1226 to have been (? immediate) predecessor of Richard de Bremble in this preb. (RSO I 320, MS reads 'Kanouill'). Donor of a silk cloth before 1214 (RSO II 134, MS reads 'Kanouill', as pd. Ceremonies p. 175). Prob. to be identified with M. John de 'Kenouuill' who occ. 1199, not called can. (Bec Docs. no. 38, cf. ibid. no. 23 'Benouilla'). Possibly to be identified with John de Kenouilla or Quenouuilla, can. of Rouen 1206, commem. 22 Aug. (D. Spear, 'Les chanoines... de Rouen', Annales de Normandie xli (forthcoming 1991)).

M. Richard de Bremble (fn. 1)

Occ. as Master, not yet can., c. 1219 and 17 Jan. 1222 (Sar. Chs. pp. 91-2, 121). First occ. as can., this preb., Oct. 1226 x Feb. 1227 (app. 1). Fined for non-residence Feb. 1227 (RSO II 77). Prob. to be identified with Richard can. who occ. 9 Sept. 1228 (ibid. p. 109). Occ. several times. Last occ. 19 Oct. 1233, when excused for non-attendance (Sar. Chs. p. 230). Possibly to be identified with M. Richard who occ. as chanc. 1 Dec. 1236 (list 4).

M. Adenulf dei Conti of Anagni

First occ. as can. 31 May 1264 (Reg. Urbain IV no. 1705, not in CPL). Prob. to be identified with 'Randolf' of Anagni who occ. as can. 3 Oct. 1266 (CPR 1258-66 p. 643). Occ. this preb. 9 Oct. 1274 (Reg. G. Giffard II 62) and May-June 1284 (app. 2). Nephew of pope Gregory IX; papal chapl., can. of Paris, Bayeux, Lincoln (1 Fasti III 64), London (ibid. I 91), York (York Minster Fasti II 66). Still alive 2 June 1287 (Reg. John Le Romeyn, ed. W. Brown (Surtees Soc. cxxiii, cxxviii, 1913-16) I 364). Does not occ. 10 May 1288 (app. 3). D. by 8 Apr. 1289 (ibid. pp. 376, 378).

M. Richard de Sotwell

Can., unident. preb., by 10 May 1288 (list 65). Inst. to this preb., on pres. of bp.-el., 27 May 1289 (Reg. G. Giffard II 351). Occ. as can., beneficiary and executor of bp. Nicholas Longespee's will, dated 14 Feb. 1295/6 (EHR xv (1900) 525, 526). Res. this preb. by 10 Aug. 1296 (Reg. G. Giffard II 481). Archdcn. of Wilts. by 19 Oct. 1299; d. by 25 Nov. 1303 (list 10).

M. William de Sardene (fn. 2)

Inducted to this preb. on pres. of bp., 10 Aug. 1296 (Reg. G. Giffard II 481). Occ. this preb. 23 Oct. 1299 (CPR 1292-1301 p. 476). Also preb. of Lincoln and archdcn. of Oxford (1 Fasti III 39); preb. of London (ibid. I 49); preb. of Hereford, Lichfield and Wells. D. 5 Nov. 1303 (1 Fasti III 39, 106), as this preb. (Reg.
