First preb. in cats., 'Levegarus cantor [Cat. II omits cantor]'. Occ. as can. once only, 1104/5 (WD 4 fo. 19/23r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 61b). Cantor of St. Paul's (see above p. 23).

Robert son of Generannus (fn. 1)

Occ. in cats. between Levegar and Ralph, 'Robertus filius Generanni'. First occ. as can. 1114/15 (Hale pp. 127-8). Last occ. 26 May 1162 (Gibbs no. 217). Occ. this preb., n.d. (Mon. Ang. IV 393(1)). Prob. son of Generannus of London, who occ. 1114/15 (Hale pp. 127-8); brother of Hugh son of Generannus, preb. of Wilsden (Gibbs no. 245).

M. Ralph (fn. 2)

Occ. in cats. between Robert son of Generannus and Walter son of Walter, 'magister Radulphus'. Only certain occ. as can. [1183/4] (Gibbs no. 69). Other occs. of 'M. Ralph' in [1174] (G.F.L. no. 427(1)) and [1170 × 76] (G.F.L. no. 392) might be M. Ralph de Alta Ripa, who became archdcn. of Colchester before Sept. 1186. Prob. to be identified with M. Ralph Theologus, who occ. as can. 1183/4 (G.F.L. no. 403, a document closely related to Gibbs no. 69, and with many of the same witnesses), and commem. 13 Feb. (Obit. I fo. 10v), 14 Feb. (Obits. II fo. 107v, III fo. 94v, IV p. 77), 15 Feb. (Obit. IV p. 63), and who cannot otherwise be assigned a preb. Perhaps also to be identified with M. Ralph Divinus, who occ. as can. [1162 × 74] (A/11/1071, pd. in Rep. p. 12a), (fn. 3) and who d. by 1192 (Gibbs no. 167). (fn. 4)

Walter son of Walter (fn. 5)

Occ. in cats. between Ralph and John of Kent, 'Walterus precentor'. Not appd. until after [July 1183 × Nov. 1184], when occ. as clk. (G.F.L. no. 404). Appd. can. and precentor at same time (Petri Blesensis Opera Omnia, ed. J. A. Giles (Oxford, 1846-7) 11 170 ff. (no. 217)). First occ. as precentor and this preb. 7 Oct. 1189 (Mon. Ang. IV 393(1)). Precentor to d., prob. in Sept. 1203.

M. John of Kent

Occ. in cats. between Walter son of Walter and Simon of Langton, 'Johannes de Cant' cancellarius London'. Occ. as bp.'s official, prob. not yet can., after c. 1195 (Cart. Colec. II 542-3). (fn. 6) Occ. as can. after May 1199 (reg. J. Stokesley: Guildhall Libr., MS. 9531/11 fo. 54r). (fn. 7) Also chanc. by March 1204, to after July 1213.

M. Simon of Langton (fn. 8)

Occ. in cats. between John of Kent and Philip Fortis Brachii, 'Simon [Symon, Cat. II] de Langeton'. Presum. to be identified with Master S. de Langetun who held houses in London in succession to John of Kent (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 145v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'P'). Occ. prob. as can. 1216 (Chron Maj. 11 654-5). Excomm. 1216 (ibid.) Depr. of benefices, presum. including this preb., 1217 (ibid. 111 31).

M. Philip Fortis Brachii

Occ. in cats. between Simon of Langton and Henry de Cornhill, 'Philippus Fortis brachie [brachio, Cat. II]'. Does not occ. as can. of St. Paul's. Occ. as can. of Paris, 21 May 1231 (Reg. Greg. IX no. 661), and d. or res. before 13 June 1233 (ibid. no. 1409; cf. no. 2217).

M. Henry de Cornhill

Occ. in cats. between Philip Fortis Brachii and Richard Talbot, 'Henricus de Cornhull cancellarius [Cat. II omits cancellarius]'. Presum. transf. to this preb. from preb. of Weldland between June 1229 and Sept. 1241 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 88v, from missing Liber F: preb. of Finsbury 'commutata erat Hen. cancellar. et appropriata cancellarie'). (fn. 9) Occ. this preb. before and after el. to deanery, by May 1243 (A/8/1050-1, cal. in Rep. p. 8a; A/10/1012, cal. in Rep. p. 11b). But perhaps transf. to another unident. preb. before May 1253 (see below). Also successively chanc., from Oct. 1217; dean by May 1243, to d. prob. in Apr. 1254.

M. Richard Talbot

(in which case Henry de Cornhill had another unident. preb. before his d. in Apr. 1254) or to another unident. preb. (from which he transf. to this preb. after Henry de Cornhill's d.). D. as preb. before 6 Oct. 1262 (C.P.R. 1266-72 p. 732), prob. 28 or 29 Sept. Also successively treas., before Aug. 1257; dean, Jan. 1262; bp.-el. of London, Aug.-Sept. 1262.

Walter of Merton (fn. 10)

Occ. in cats. between Richard Talbot and William de Ewelle, 'Walterus de Mertone [Merthone, Cat. II]'. Previously preb. of Cantlers. Royal gr. of preb. in succession to Richard Talbot, 6 Oct. 1262 (C.P.R. 1266-72 p. 732). Occ. this preb. 9 Oct. 1265 (C.P.R. 1258-66 p. 461), and 7 Dec. 1272 (A/8/1052, cal. in Rep. p. 8b).
