Thursday, the 25th of September, 1656.

Preachers thanked.

ORDERED, That the Thanks of this House be given unto Mr. Joseph Carill, for his great Pains taken in his Sermon, preached before this House Yesterday, being a Day appointed for publick Fasting: And that he be desired to print his Sermon: And that he have the like Privilege in printing, as hath been formerly allowed in like Cases: And that Mr. John Ash do give him Thanks, accordingly.

Ordered, That the Thanks of this House be given unto Mr. Thomas Manton, for his great Pains taken in his Sermon, preached before this House Yesterday, being a Day appointed for publick Fasting and Humiliation: And that he be desired to print his Sermon: And that he hath the like Privilege in printing as hath been formerly allowed in like Cases: And that Major-General Whalley, give him the Thanks of the House, accordingly.

Ordered, That the Thanks of the House be given to Mr. Jenkins, for his great Pains taken in his Sermon, preached before this House Yesterday, being a Day set apart for publick Fasting and Humiliation: And that he be desired to print his Sermon: And that he hath the like Privilege in printing as hath been formerly allowed in like Cases: And that Major Beak do give him the Thanks of the House, accordingly.

Debtors.

Ordered, That a Committee be appointed to prepare a Bill to compel those who are of Ability and lie in Prison, to pay their Debts; and also for Relief of such as lie in Prison, and not able to pay their Debt: Viz. to Mr. Young, General Disbrow, Mr. Hoskins, Mr. Carey, Mr. Gyles, Mr. Lyster.

Marriages, &c.

Ordered, That it be referred to a Committee to prepare a Bill for Settlement of Marriages; and to prevent the taking away of Heirs and Infants, and registering of Births, Burials, and Marriages: Viz. to Lord Commissioner Whitelock, Mr. Recorder of London, Mr. Baron Parker.

Increase of Timber.

Lord Commissioner Whitelock presents a Bill, intituled, An Act for Increase and Preservation of Timber: Which was read the First time; and ordered to be read the Second time on Saturday Morning next.

Gloucester, &c. Writs.

General Disbrow being chosen for Bridgwater, Gloucester, Somerset, and Lynne, chooseth to serve for the County of Somerset.

Ordered, That Mr. Speaker do issue his Warrant to the Clerk of the Commonwealth in Chancery, to issue out a Writ for the Election of a Burgess for the City of Gloucester, in the Place of General Disbrow; who was doubly elected, and hath made his Choice to serve for the County of Somerset.

Ordered, That Mr. Speaker do issue his Warrant to the Clerk of the Commonwealth in Chancery, to issue out a Writ for electing of a Burgess for the Borough of Bridgwater, in the Place of General Disbrow; who was doubly elected, and hath made his Choice to serve for the County of Somerset.

Lynne Election.

Ordered, That the Business of the Elections for the Town of Lynne in the County of Norfolk, where Three Persons are returned, be referred to the Committee for Privileges.

Members double returned.

Ordered, That all the Members of this House, who are returned to serve for more Places than one, do, within Eight Days next coming, make their Choice for which of the said Places they will serve.

Issue of Writs.

Ordered, That Mr. Speaker be authorized to give his Warrant for new Writs, in case of Death of any Member, or Double Returns, where the Party makes his Choice openly in the House, during this Session.

Corn and Meal.

Resolved, That a Bill be brought in for taking away the Clause for pleading the General Issue in the Act for Meal: And that Mr. Solicitor and Mr. Attorney do prepare a Bill accordingly: And Colonel Cock is added to them for that Purpose.

Writs of Certiorari.

Ordered, That a Committee be appointed to consider of the Abuses in granting Certioraries; as also in what Cases they are fit to be granted, and in what Cases not: And to prepare a Bill therein: Viz. to Lord Chief Justice Glyn, Mr. Hoskins, Colonel Cock, Mr. Carey, Lord Fynes, Colonel Chadwick, Major-General Packer, Mr. West, Mr. Smyth, Mr. Solicitor-General, Major-General Boteler, Major-General Goff, Major-General Whalley, Colonel Blake, Sir Gilbert Pickering, Lord Strickland, Mr. Pedley, Colonel Rous, General Disbrow, Lord Lambert, Sir Christofer Pack, Colonel Sidenham, Major-General Haines, Colonel Gorges, Lord Whitelock, Major Burton, Mr. Swynton, Lord Commissioner Lisle, Lord Evers, Mr. Fowell, Attorney-General, Colonel Beamount, Mr. Downing, Colonel Rogers, Major Audley, Mr. Higland, Colonel Howard, Sir Wm. Strickland, Colonel White, Lord Broghill, Major Aston, Colonel Clerk, Mr. Cobbe, Mr. Young, Lord Richard Cromwell: And this Committee are to meet this Afternoon at Two of the Clock, in the Star-Chamber.

War with Spain.

Resolved, That the House doth appoint Tuesday next, to take into Consideration the Business touching the War with Spain: And the Lord Lambert is desired to acquaint his Highness, that the House have appointed that Day for that Purpose.
