Thursday, 21st July, 1653.

Customs.

A BILL for compelling the late Farmers of the Customs, and their Under-Sharers, to pay their proportionable Shares and Parts of the Composition of One hundred and Fifty thousand Pounds, formerly paid in to the Use of the Commonwealth, by some of the said Farmers, was this Day read the First time.

Advancement of Learning.

Sir Wm. Roberts reports, from the Committee, The Names of Members of the House, to be of the Committee for Advancement of Learning, and receiving all Propositions tending thereunto: Which were, upon the Question, agreed unto; viz. Mr. Strickland, Mr. Sadler, Mr. Lawrence, Mr. Wingfield, Dr. Goddard, Colonel Barton, Mr. Spence, Sir Anth. Ashley Cooper, Colonel Sidenham, Alderman Titchborne, Colonel Mountagu, Mr. Lockart, Sir Robert King, Colonel Blunt.

Resolved, That the Quorum of this Committee be Five.

Resolved, That Sir Wm. Roberts, Mr. John St. Nicholas, Colonel Mathewes, Captain Cust, be added to this Committee: Who are to meet in the Duchy-Chamber this Afternoon, at Two of the Clock.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee for the Army, to prepare a Bill, containing such Powers as are necessary to be given to that Committee.

Hospitals.

Ordered, That the Business touching Hospitals be referred to the Committee for the Poor.

Propagating the Gospel.

The Question being propounded, That it be referred to a Committee, to consider of removing all Laws and Ordinances, that are Hindrance to the Progress of the Gospel;

And the Question being put; That this Question be now put;

It passed in the Affirmative.

And the main Question being now put; It was

Resolved, That it be referred to a Committee, to consider of the removing all Laws and Ordinances, which are Hindrances to the Progress of the Gospel; and to report the same to the House.

Resolved, That it be referred to the Committee of the Law.

Probate of Wills.

Ordered, That the Quorum of the Commissioners for Probate of Wills, be Three; and that Mr. Sadler do bring in an Act to that Purpose To-morrow Morning.

Ordered, That the Committee of the Law, do take into Consideration the Business concerning Probate of Wills and Administrations.

Printing Proceedings.

Ordered, That no Person, or Printer, do print or publish any Acts, Orders, or Proceedings of the Parliament, unless the same be first licensed under the Hand of the Clerk of the Parliament to be printed by such Person.

Admiralty.

Ordered, That an Act be brought in, for settling the Powers of the Commissioners of the Admiralty and Navy in the former Act, upon the Commissioners now acting, together . . the Persons added by the Parliament, without the Restriction to the Quorum mentioned in the former Act; and that Mr. Broughton do bring in an Act accordingly.

Ordered, That the Commissioners of the Admiralty and Navy do set down the whole State of the Office of the Gunnery.
