Prayers.

The humble Petition of John Doyly, of Greenland, Esquire, was this Day read. And

It is Ordered, That the Consideration of this Petition be resumed, when the House considers of the Disposal of the Offices.

Resolved, &c. That it be referred to the Committee that has the Care of the Members of the House, to inquire into, and consider, What Offices are avoided by the late Ordinance, that discharges the Members of the Houses of their Offices; and what Profit those Places have yielded, since the Members enjoyed them; and to consider of, and settle, a Salary to be allowed to such Persons as shall execute the same, to arise out of the said Offices; and likewise to consider what Offices are necessary, and what may be laid aside; that the Profit of such Places, as shall be laid aside, may accrue to the Benefit of the Commonwealth.

A Letter from Colonel Massie, Governor of Gloucester, from Gloucester, of April 3d 1645, desiring a Supply of a Strength of Horse; and acquainting the House with the Enemy's Proceedings in Herefordshire, in executing divers of the Country-People, that did rise there; was this Day read: And

It is Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of both Kingdoms, to consider of sending speedy Supplies to Sir Wm. Waller and Colonel Massie, according to their Necessities represented unto them: And that they give an Account of their Proceedings herein to the House To-morrow Morning.

Mr.Green, Mr. Nicoll, Mr. Predeaux, Mr. Whitelock, Mr. Ashe, and Mr. Bedingfield, are appointed to treat with the Merchants-Adventurers, for the Continuance of the Ten thousand Pounds payable unto them out of the Excise in May next; receiving the Interest for Six Months longer, upon the like Interest.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee for Plymouth, to provide Pay for the Plymouth Regiment of Horse in the West.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee for the Army where Mr. Scawen has the Chair, to take care, that the Regiments of Horse and Foot, now in the West, designed for Sir Thomas Fairefaxe's Army, may be reduced; and listed in his Army; and that they may have a Fortnight's Pay, by way of Advance.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of the Army, to arm the Men that are come out of Kent; and that they, and the Committee of the West, do take care for sending these Men, thus armed, to recruit Colonel Weldon's Regiment; and that the Committee of Kent do pay the Conduct of them, to be allowed them out of their Assessments; and that the Gentlemen of Kent do presently write their Letters to Gravesend, to stay those Men there, till further Directions.

Ordered, That the Gentlemen of Surry do give in an Account to the House, To-morrow Morning, what Horse and Foot lie there upon Free-Quarter.

The like is ordered for the Counties of Oxon, Bucks, and Berks.

Sir Philip Stapleton reports, from the Committee of both Kingdoms, a Paper, of the Fifth of April, to the Scotts Commissioners; with their Answer, of the Eighth of April 1645: Which was read.

Ordered, That the Business concerning the Navy be taken into Consideration To-morrow Morning, the first Business, after Mr. Speaker takes the Chair.

Ordered, That all the Monies in Arrear upon the Ordinance for the Scotts Loans in Essex, be brought up, and paid in to the Treasurers at Goldsmiths-Hall, by Wednesday next. The Gentlemen of Essex are required to take notice hereof; and use their best Endeavours for bringing up the Monies accordingly.

Ordered, That all the Monies in Arrear upon the Ordinance for the Scotts Loans in the several Counties of Suffolke, Kent, Cambridge, Sussex, Huntingdon, Northampton, Hertford, Bedford, and Norfolke, be brought up, and paid in, to the Treasurers at Goldsmiths-Hall, by Wednesday next: And the Gentlemen of these several Counties are required to take notice of this Order; and to employ their best Endeavours, that the Money may be brought in accordingly.

Ordered, That Sir Gilbert Pickering do write Letters to the Gentlemen of Rutlandshire, for assessing and levying the Monies set upon that County, by the Ordinance of Parliament, for the Scotts Loans.

Ordered, That Ten thousand Pounds, Arrear of the Forty thousand Pounds, formerly assigned to the Scotts Armies, be provided, and be ready, at Ten Days End, at the farthest.

Ordered, That it be, from this House, especially recommended to the Committee at Goldsmiths-Hall, to advance this Ten thousand Pounds, upon their own personal Credits; to be secured and repaid out of the Arrears of the Scotts Money in the several Counties.

And it is referred especially to Sir Anthony Irby and Mr. Jennor, to acquaint the Committee of Goldsmythes-Hall with this Order; and to advantage the Advance of these Monies within the Time, by the best Means they can.

Ordered, That, on Friday Morning, the first Business, the Two Ordinances concerning Yorkshire, and That concerning Lancashire, be read.

A Message from the Lords, by Sir Edw. Leech and Mr. Page;

The Lords have commanded us to let you know, that they have appointed to give Audience to the States Ambassadors To-morrow at Ten of Clock. They desire to put you in mind of an Ordinance they formerly sent unto you concerning Rutlandshire, that you would give it Expedition. They have received a Petition from one Beauchamp, a Merchant; which they do recommend to the Consideration * * * *.

Sir Philip Stapilton reports, from the Committee of both Kingdoms, That the Paper brought in, by the States Ambassadors, to both Houses, is of that Nature, that it requires a longer Time to consider of it; and that there are other Things that are coincident with this; and that the Committee will, with all convenient Speed, give an Account of both.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth order, That Sir Oliver Flemyng Knight, Master of the Ceremonies, do repair to the States Ambassadors; and let them know, That the Commons of England, assembled in Parliament, will be ready to give them Audience To-morrow Morning at Ten of Clock, if they please.

Answer returned by the same Messengers; That this House has considered their Lordships Message; and do agree to give the States Ambassadors Audience To-morrow Morning: As to the rest of the Message, they will send Answer by Messengers of their own.

Resolved, &c. That Two Members of this House, or more, shall be speedily sent down to the Scotts Army, with such Instructions as they shall receive from this House.

Resolved, &c. That Sir Henry Vane senior shall be one of the Members that shall be speedily sent down to the Scotts Army.

Resolved, &c. That Mr.Henry Darley shall be one of the Members that shall be speedily sent to the Scotts Army.

Resolved, &c. That Mr. Hatcher shall be one of the Members that shall be speedily sent to the Scotts Army.

Resolved, &c. That Sir Henry Vane senior be added to the Committees or Commissioners of both Kingdoms appointed to reside with the Scotts Army.

The Lords Concurrence to be desired herein.

Upon the Report, from the Committee of both Kingdoms, recommending Lieutenant-Colonel Grey to be Colonel of that Regiment in Lincolnshire which was under the Command of Colonel Rainsborough;

It is Resolved, &c. That this House doth concurr with the Committee; and doth approve of Lieutenant-Colonel Grey to be Colonel of that Regiment in Lancashire which was formerly under Colonel Rainsborough.
