The Treasury Lords to the Attorney General and
the rest of the Poll Commissioners for the Middle
Temple. We are informed that the members of
your society are assessed very poorly to the last
[Second] Poll for their practices, far below the
direction and meaning of the Act [2 Wm. and
Mary, c. 2] for same. We desire you to consider
that matter better and to execute your powers as
[Assessment] Commissioners in such manner that
the King's service (wherein the public safety is at
this time so very much concerned) may not suffer.
We do not hear that you have made any progress
yet upon the review of the 1689 Poll, but doubt
not you will proceed thereon forthwith, "as the
Lord Chief Justice and the rest of the Commissioners
for Serjeants Inn in Chancery Lane have done
within their limits, where there was no assessment
laid upon [said Inn by] the Original Act [1 Wm.
and Mary, c. 13, for the First Poll], but is now upon
the Act [1 Wm. and Mary, Sess. 2, c. 7] of Review."

and excepting all rooms used by the steward of

have referred to the Attorney General the case of
the assessing to the 2s. and Additional 12d. Aids
[1 Wm, and Mary, Sess. 2, c. 1 and c. 5] of the last
[sic for salt] springs and salt works at Droitwich.
He has fully heard that matter by counsel on both
sides. We enclose a copy [missing] of his report.
"We would prevail with you to direct the collectors
to levy and pay to Mr. Bearcroft, the Receiver
General [for your county], the sum of 687l. 6s. 7d.,
being the charge upon the salt springs and works
together, and the first and regular assessment ;
and to give the said collectors and others concerned
all necessary assistance and encouragement in their
performance thereof, according to the said Acts of
Parliament. As for such persons that have menaced
and affronted the collectors and broke the peace
and brought actions against them for doing their
duty in this matter, informations shall be brought
against them [in the Exchequer] for the same ; as
shall likewise against such as shall give any opposition
to their Majesties' service herein : and if any such
happen we would also prevail with you to acquaint

shewing that in Hilary term, 168-, judgments were
obtained in the King's Bench against Alexander
Courthope for debts on bonds, viz. 2,000l. on suit
of said Charles and John, 3,000l. on suit of said
Susan, 2,000l. on suit of Peter Courthope ; and
thereon writs of Fieri facias were duly prosecuted
and delivered to George Etkyns, then sheriff of
Kent, who levied on said Alexander's goods and
chattels to the value of the debts and damages,
which goods and chattels remained in his hands
for want of buyers, and he refused to sell same or
make petitioners any satisfaction ; whereupon
petitioners procured several rules of Court and
writs of Distringas nuper vice comitem ita quod
venditioni exponat and issues to the value of 9,540l.
have been set and returned and estreated into the
Exchequer against said late sheriff : since which,
process has issued out of the Exchequer for levying
said amercements and issues ; and Sir Robert
Fillmer, late sheriff of Kent, upon his opposal has
charged himself with 4,740l. thereof by totting the
same and stands indebted for so much to the King.
Therefore petitioners pray that satisfaction for
their debts may be granted to them out of the
said issues or to Tho. Bathurst in trust for them,
they having been at great charges in the prosecution
without as yet receiving any satisfaction for said
debts, upon which depends their only support for
their maintenance. |

office of searcher, packer and gauger of Dublin port
is void by death of Mr. William Scott, and the
King has declared his pleasure at the Treasury
Board that Sir John Edgworth should have the
office, and a patent has accordingly passed some
of the offices here [London]. But Dublin being
now reduced to their Majesties' obedience and
Commissioners being appointed for the Great Seal
of Ireland, it is more proper the grant should pass
the Great Seal of Ireland. Please procure a grant

Royal warrant to the Treasury Lords to give warrant
for felling timber in forests as follows for purposes
as follow, viz. in New Forest sufficient to raise
535 loads of timber and also 933l. 8s. 10d. and
160l. in money for repairing the decayed lodges
there and new building the Queen's Mead Lodge
and new making the rails thereto and for enclosing
nurseries as follow : it appearing by the presentment
of June 30 last [1690] that there are in New Forest
nine bailiwicks wherein are 17 walks and as many
lodges, except one which was burned down some
few years since ; and that in such of the said bailiwicks
as are in [possession of] the Crown there are
twelve of the lodges very old and decayed and the
rails thereto generally broken down and the repair
thereof, together with the rebuilding Queen Mead
Lodge, will cost 933l. 8s. 10d. and 535 loads of
timber ; some part of which charge may be saved
if the bricks necessary be made in some convenient
part of the forest : further that the underkeepers
are by ancient decree in the Exchequer restrained
to six loads of fuel wood yearly and by privy seal
of 1686, Sept. 6, were forbid to make any browse
of oak or beech except some small quantities in
extreme hard weather and then not to lop any
young or thriving trees or to sell to their own use
any wood cut, on pain of dismissal ; further that
there are many purprestures and encroachments
in said forest, for prevention of which the keepers
should be directed to suffer no cottage to be erected
or any encroachment to be made, on pain of dismissal ;
further that there is not at present any
provision for raising nurseries of wood and timber
in said forest ; wherefore the said surveyor proposed
that in each of the nine bailiwicks 40 acres may
be enclosed for nurseries, to be fenced from deer,
cattle etc. by a ditch four feet broad at a total
charge of 160l. : all which the Treasury Lords
hereby approve and order to be done accordingly
for all the said repairs etc., and to be observed for
the fuel taking, purprestures and encroachments.
And similarly to raise 18l. by dotard wood sales
in South, alias East Beer Forest in co. Southampton
for enclosing the coppice there called New Coppice
of 60 acres formerly enclosed for the growth of
young timber ; same to be for repairing said enclosure
and cutting away the old stuff in order to a better
growth of young wood.
And similarly to raise 10l. by dotard wood sales
in Alice Holt Forest for the enclosing of a place
called Binswood (Binnswood), being about 150
acres, for the most part very well stored with good
oak, but which has suffered damage from the
cottagers, being above three miles from any other
of the King's wood in said forest, being in most
places bounded with the lands of the freeholders :
and similarly to raise a further 4l. per an. for about
20 years ensuing as an allowance to some honest
man living near the place to induce him to take
charge thereof and keep the same from spoil : all
which is similarly hereby ordered to be done and
observed. (Three separate Treasury warrants dated

authorising and ordering as above for each of the

Chamber. (1) An account to be forthwith taken
by said Comptroller of all moneys issued to the
present Treasurer of the Chamber and how much
thereof has been by him applied to the payment

what moneys remain in his hands. (2) The Comptroller
to have recourse [access] to all books, papers,
establishments and accounts, past and present,
relating hereto. (3) The Comptroller from time to
time to visit the cash of the Office and certify a

Treasurer of the Chamber not to make any payments
of money till the Comptroller have made
out debentures or certificates of the sums to be
paid, the persons to whom and for what uses and

said Office to be made up and passed every year
and the Comptroller to sign said accounts before
they be received by the Auditor. (6) The Comptroller
to keep exact accounts of all receipts and
payments in said Office and to take care that no
payments be made there but what are warranted
by the establishments : and from time to time
to represent the state of said Office to the Treasury
Lords. (7) Nothing herein to interfere with such
warrants as the Lord Chamberlain or Vice Chamberlain
of the Household shall draw upon the Treasurer
