Report to the Queen from the Treasury Lords on the
complaint against Julius Deeds for rescuing wool
seized in Scotney barn near Hythe. We think the
seizure legal as being on reasonable suspicion and
the rescuing thereof was a transgression of the law.
But counsel for Deeds insists that the Customs
officers had no constable or civil officer with them,
as the law requires : to which the counsel for the
Crown replied that the Constable or Borsholder
who should have assisted was amongst the rioters,
"although at a trial since had in Westminster Hall
we find the jury was induced to believe that the
said wool was designed to be shipped for some
other part of England." The Customs officers were
assaulted by Thomas Birch, Hen. Boissington,
Antho. Cockerill, Thomas Lording, John Knight,
John Whitfeild, Henry Baker, John Godfrey,
— Hoggsflesh, John Mackett, Peter Wood,
Thomas Stonnard, — Tampsett and William
Johnson, who wounded several of the officers with
quarterstaves ; the said Birch was the Borsholder
and servant of said Deeds and commanded the
party and shewed to the bailiffs of Lydd the said
Deeds' order for the said rescue. At the time of
the rescue Deeds was at his house 12 miles from the
said barn. We conceive that the strong opposition
which the officers have met with upon this and
other occasions in those parts is such that there
is no likelihood of their performing their duty unless
assisted by soldiers ordered to be quartered in those
parts for that purpose. |

the said ladings are bona-fide goods of the product
of Spain and Portugal, and therefore their cases
are the same with that of Sir Bazill Firebrace, who

The Treasury Lords to the Revenue Commissioners,
Ireland. Col. Edmund Maine, late Commander in
Chief of the Third Troop of Guards (in the absence
of the Earl of Marlborough), has represented that
when the Army marched for Ireland Jane Wollaston
was appointed sutler to said Troop and made
preparations accordingly, which were put on board
the Pelican of Brighthelmston [Brighton], then
bound for Ireland, "but were detained at Plymouth
for want of a convoy, during the French being on
the coast, until the King was come for England,"
and immediately after, arriving at Dublin, she had
to pay 16l. 8s. 0d. for Customs thereon, although
solely designed for the service of the Troops, and
notwithstanding the King's directions that all
provisions for the Army should be imported, Customs
free. You are to return said sum to her. |
