in his petition are true. He often complained of
the neglect of the sheriffs in discharging goods after
levy and I have verified same as also the sheriffs'
complaints against some of the Exchequer officers.
Petitioner was at the cost of several commissions
detailed; and it appears by the bill of Goodenough,
one of the undersheriffs, that he stopped the charge
of an inquisition against Lady St. John's goods.
Petitioner was at charge in several convictions and
appraisements and the greatest part of the goods
were pleaded off. He has paid no moneys into the
Exchequer. |

rebellion in the West. Is it the King's pleasure
that there be precedents for those of the Earl of
Dunbarton's and the Earl of Craven's Regiment,
or what distinction is to be observed ? Also what
degree of augmentation of royal bounty is to be
awarded to the Gentlemen of the King's Horse
Guards and Royal Regiment of Horse, I pray
consideration of the services of my [medical]
brethren therein, viz. Mr. Hobbs, who attended
the General and the Horse Guards and returned
with them; Mustow and Mr. Wyley, the one
surgeon to Col. Trelawney, the other to Col. Kirke,
they dressing the wounded men sent to Bridgwater
from the day of the fight till the latter end of
September; Mr. Bellamy and his servant, who took
care of 38 wounded men sent to Bath from the
beginning of July until the middle of August when
the men were either cured, dead or sent to the
Hospital in London; the wounded and sick of both
places being now all come away and there remaining
yet unpaid about 70l. for that service. The number
of wounded sent to Bridgwater was 110 and those
sent to Bath 38, making a total of 148. The total
charge for medicines, diet, lodging and necessaries
was 151l. 9s. 5d. whereof 80l. has been paid by Mr.
Fox. I also pray that the allowance to the surgeons
of the land Forces for medicine money may be
settled. |

Customs Commissioners who therein represented
that they observed a greater number of wrecks than
ordinary, more especially of wines and brandies
which goods were generally taken into the possession of the Vice Admirals or their deputies or the
lords of manors in right of their respective royalties
and that they suspected some contrivance between the
proprietors of the goods and the said personages to
set up pretences of wreck on purpose to avoid the
great duty on those commodities: and therefore
desired that all such wrecked goods should remain
in possession of the Customs officers till it be decided
legally whether the goods were wreck or not. This
being controverted on behalf of the Admiralty the
King, upon full hearing of Sir Richard Lloyd, Col.
Strode and Sir Robt. Holmes and others on behalf of
the Admiralty and the said Customs and Excise
Commissioners on the other behalf did order (for
the avoiding of all controversy about the several
distinctions of wreck in relation to the payment
of the duties) that all wreck goods whatsoever as
well such as should remain to the King in the right
of his Admiralty as others should pay the duty of
Custom and Excise without any allowance for
salvage or other allowance whatsoever except as
allowed by the Act of Tonnage and Poundage for
damage, and further that all goods salved or coming
on shore as wreck should remain in the custody of
the Customs officers till the duty be paid or secured. |
